I tuned into the television just in time to catch Bette Midler sing this live. In my city, Austin, TX, the whole town was crying on 9/11. Whether I was putting in gas at the station or grocery shopping, everyone was red-eyed w/ flushed faces. When I heard her sing I felt she was giving me a strong, warm & I felt my soul start to mend. I will love her forever, she connected w/ all of us. It was a big love fest as tears poured out. Thank you, Bette Midler, Thank God for YOU.
Bette doesn't hold a candle to GARY MORRIS's version of this song. HE was the first to score the top ten with it. The recording and movie industry tried to destroy him, because they wanted Milder to sing it in a movie. He bares his soul, while singing it.
Bette Midler became a hero that day. That's why till this day, people love her. She went to this game, even after threats were made to sing. And while singing, she said God bless you. That cemented her place in America as a true hero.
Mellymel0114 Thanks for the correction. Totally forgot it was a game. My memories of that time are so messed up. I live in Houston, and lived through tropical storm Allison that year in June and the aftermath of it. Then came 9/11, it was surreal back to back living it.
I’m an Australian. I’ve been to New York, went to the top of the Twin Towers. When 9/11 happened I sat up all night, watching live coverage, sobbing my heart out😢
I watched this live. I cried then. I still cry every time I listen to it. Her song, her emotions and her love for this country showed why this song can still bring tears. It started us in being able to mend our broken hearts and to have pride again in our country. We’d forgotten for a minute what we can do when we pull together. Her song helped us see there was still love in the world if we just stop and pay attention. You never know these days we may need her again to remind us again. We are the wind beneath our wings. Thanks Bette.
i have to give it to Bette Midler i dont know how she can perform this song and keep her own emotions in check while everybody else is openly crying and breaking down in tears. This is one of her best songs and very fitting for this 9/11 memorial.
This was a special concert for the first responders & their families very soon after the Twin Towers disaster - which is why it's so poignant. People are crying for their lost loved ones and many people were still afraid of what might happen. Bette was not only brave and generous, she lifted everyone's spirits on that day. As a New York resident, she was profoundly affected and wanted to contribute. Bless her.🥰
As soon as this woman opens her mouth just to say "oooohhhhh"... I get chills and goosebumps ALL OVER! She's unique, really lives to her title of Divine.
23 years gone by and I still can’t believe this day. I really thought the world was gonna end due to missiles but at the same time we had to mourn our lost. I don’t think people now can fathom how brave all these people were to attend this event and Bette to perform. It was very scary and a huge risk.
This song is the true meaning of my relationship with my father. He gave me music lessons for many years as a child. I excelled and became our church organist, played for weddings, classical music, etc all at the age of 14. My father always stood nearby looking so proud of me. He passed away 3 years ago. I do Thank God for Him, The Wind Beneath My Wings.
Yes, and I sang this song to my dad on his 80th birthday party celebration in 1995. He's gone now but he was always the wind beneath my wings. I love you Dad.❤
OMG, I cried like a baby when I saw her singing this great song on TV that day!!!!! So did my parents. If you saw this clip the day she sang it and didn't cry, there's something WRONG WITH YOU OR YOU ARE AMERICA's ENEMY!!!!!!!!!! And here it is, almost 10 years later; I'm watching this clip and still crying!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA< AND GOD BLESS US< EVERY ONE!!!!!!!!
Where is our patriotism now? I love Bette Midler...she brings out nothing but raw emotion in everyone..including our elected officials that are seated by her. We are all human beings regardless of our background.
i send this song to my beloved Mum, who left this world to soon, RIP MUM, Feb. 3, 1951-Jan. 4, 2009, LOVE you Mum, and miss you so much, but you are always with me in my heart.
Oh wow!!! I always cry when I watch this video. Thank you Bette Midler for singing this and helping so many to cope with the lost of their love ones. God bless you Sweetie.
I cried when I saw and heard this. I lost my wife of 25 years to cancer back in Dec. 2020. Bette Midler's concert was the first date we went on, and she was absolutely amazing. Hearing this made me think of my wife. Thank you Bette Midler for being so very amazing! I'm the one that has to say thank you! 😍😍😍❤❤❤
This was played at my wedding to the most amazing and wonderful mam to ever walk this earth, I cry now because he is no longer with us he was and still is my hero, RIP MY LOVE MY HERO,🇨🇦🇨🇦🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😢😢
Yes. She has said, “i might have been born at Hawaii, but I’m a New Yorker,” and has quietly done what she can to make the state better, planting trees and cleaning up.
I love this song, so haunting, yet so beautiful! It’s like a poem being sung as your falling asleep as the sun sets over the sea, a bird flys over the last notes die out, the sun sinks into a crimson gold, then the street lights comes on & a new starts, the words linger on forever. “Thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.”
No words can adequately comfort unexpected dread. Grief shock anguish. The God created Bette Midler to make us laugh. Cry. To ease the pain. Live life to the fullest as short as it is. What a courageous performance at a horrific moment in mankind's history!
My thoughts and prayers STILL go out to all the loved ones and everyone lost during 9/11. My mother was on a flight and luckily her plane landed safely. God Bless the USA and the rest of the world for that matter.
Bette Midler's performance of "Wind Beneath My Wings" at Yankee Stadium in 2001 was a deeply emotional tribute. Held during a ceremony commemorating the tragic events of 9/11, the performance became a poignant moment of remembrance and healing for many. The song, known for its powerful message of gratitude and support, resonated strongly with the audience, offering comfort and solidarity in the aftermath of the attacks. Bette's heartfelt delivery made the occasion particularly memorable and moving for all in attendance.
She was crying when she left. She contained herself until the last note. Other performers were supposed to be there, but they backed out because they were too scared of another terrorist attack. Bette came here when others would not. She was brave.Barbara S. was asked, as were others. They declined, out of fear.
Artsts who see their talent as a vocation are no different to health proffesionals and teachers etc who devote their lives to doing the right thing. God bless Ms Midler who went the extra mile x
I so agree. It was the most emotional performance I have ever seen by any performer. For her to be able to get through it without breaking down was truly inspiring.
This song is a powerful message from God telling us he loves us all. And can we please remember to live one another as I have loved you. God bless our planet. We have so much here to love and enjoy on this planet. I know love and piece exits as my loving father says so . Amen
one of our countries bittersweet moments. in a time of national tragedy, this inspirational song brought together a grieving nation while paying due respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Bette Midler's finest moment in her career. The power of the raw emotion she conveyed with just her voice and a piano. Stunningly powerful and so fitting for that day. She made it memorable, a song I never took that seriously, but Bette is a genius in front of a crowd and she knows, instinctively, what to do. I remember how we all felt hat day. I love Bette Midler even more today.
I love Bette Midler. She has no idea how much she inspires with her sense of compassion and connection to everyone around her. She truly brings out the best in people and does her best to pump us up with a sense of real joy.
How the heck can someone thumbs down this video? The emotions were unheard of during this tragic time. Thousands of people lost their lives and thousands of families were disrupted. But meanwhile someone has the audacity to thumbs down this video. Show some compassion. I will never forget 9/11. As a fellow New Yorker, I moved out of state a year before this event . However, once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker. God Bless NY and the rest of America.
Writing from the u.s. many (americans and non) are convinced the United States government planned the attack; Many (americans and non) are convinced that the United States as a whole thinks it’s better than any other country, that this attack would cause the country to collapse.
I burst into tears too even Better Midler was Emotional I can tell she was holding Back the Tears while she was Singing and she really Lost it after she got done Singing 😢😢😢😢😢
I always think of my darling mother when I hear this song. She was always cheering in my corner and said just the right thing when I needed encouragement. God bless you mum, thank God for you❤
Who will ever forget what you were doing that day? It was crushing to the hearts of all Americans. The loss of the people, no matter what nationality , race, or religon was devasting. The thanks to the firemen and police men who lost their own life that day saving others and the thanks to the others who did their job and lived was spoken through Bette. Thank you
I danced with my Mom to this song at my wedding. She made the flower girls dresses, her own and we made my wedding gown. And she REALLY is my HERO ❤️❤️❤️

Thank God for you! No one will ever heal completely from 9/11 but her song helps.
No one ever sang this song like legendary Bette Midler.
God please have mercy on us all.
Protect us all from satanic evil that's out there.
But this is her song? Just another time and space to be. A different way to present the song. Still marvellous. Bette is a legend.
Sad.. sweet beautiful

I noticed Better Midler Broke Down right after she was done performing
Tears started to come out of my eyes as she started to sing.
Golly. The stadium echo is haunting yet beautiful. Amazing! RIP to all the ones lost.

No words to express the emotion she never fails to evoke no matter how many times I listen. Bless Bette!

This was our song before my dear friend Wendy passed away. Will always think of her when this song is played
There are certain songs no one except the original singer should sing. This is one of them.
As Tribute to my mom I requested that they sing this song at her funeral 😢
I love that song. It brings me good memories. I love it.
I am in 2024, still crying because I love someone who is going away 😢💔
God definitely used Bette with this song, the lyrics hit hard! I know some people see it and others do to at least subconsciously. Glory to God.
I like and love the way she sings, i can really feel her sincerity!
