Always wanted to get into the card game, collected during gen 1 as a kid but never actually learned to play... yeah :P I play a lot of magic and now I've been getting back into Pokemon recently and I've been kind of wanting to try the card game for real this time. Thanks for the great outline and introduction to the core game mechanics. Great vid!
I've had Pokemon cards forever pretty much and used them to trade with friends, but now I want to get into battling because it looks fun. This video helped so much!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Dude, i owe you a bunch for this! Seriously, i've been collecting the pokemon cards for years and i have never learned how to actually play the game! Thanks! :)
Theme decks used to be (and probably still are) packaged with them. You can also get nice ones made out of the same material as some mousepads from online vendors
Okay folks before anyone gets on me All these years since the days of just 151 pokemon, i never knew how to play, i just normally collected them just to have them. About to start collecting the cards again (the hobby starts once again) but overall brother.....Great video!!!!!
Super helpful intro; thank you! Are there rules about which cards can be evolved by which other cards? For example, does team aqua have to be evolved by team aqua? I looked online, but couldn't find the answer.
2 questions: When you begin the game, are you supposed to put all of your pokemon onto the bench (even evolved ones?) or can you decide to keep pokemon in your hand? When you retreat, do you discard the energy cards to pay the retreat cost? Or do you just need to have the energy to pay the retreat cost but the energy remains attached? Thanks
Hi! I wanted to thank you for this video. Wife & I are learning to play so we can teach our 9 year old daughter. she is showing an interest. we're both MTG players but never played Pokémon. After your video we feel equipped to play. Question: are there any defensive actions during an opponents turn (like in MTG instant cards or fast effects)?
Hi thanks. A question... what if you didn’t draw an energy card in your first deck. Do you wait until you draw it out by taking one card at a time when it’s your turn to draw? Thanks in advance.
I got a question, let's say you had your tangla and you had the grass energy on it. If you evolve it to tangrowth does the energy card on tangla transfer over to tangrowth or do you have to discard the energy card that was on tangla?
what will happen to your attached energy cards when your pokemon get ko'ed? and could the pokemon attacks in the same turn when its switched from the bench? thankyou :D
i got told youre not allowed to use black and white pokemon cards into like an old deck.. does this count for friendly battles too..? its not like im going to some tournament or so.. we battle over skype..
thanks for this vid, my nephew wants to play me and I completely forgot after 10-15 years of nit playing. I'm also sure I played this game completely wrong as a kid lol
Wat if u dont have alot or that u run out of energy in ur deck do u lose cause of not havin or running out of energy cards or u can keep on using them????
Is there a limit to the energy cards you can add on a Pokemon card ? my daughter got a card where you take off an extra 20 for every water energy attached. so can I add 10 water energies ?
No, that's perfectly allowed. Sometimes older cards would have a cap on the damage dealt, but modern cards usually let you stack as much damage as you want.
do you lose your energy cards after each attack or once you have say three energy cards you can keep spamming the same attack each turn with the same cards?
The way I play it is the energy cards don't go in the deck all the energy cards go right beside the discard pile and every turn u draw 1 unless u have a card to where u can search ur deck for some energy cards u draw two and its easer
No, its actully very simple. If you buy a complete deck (not the best card but its very good for beginners) you get a card field with all the rules on it that you can follow. You also get a rule book (wich make sense) ... and after you read the rule book once you can play the game :)
ok im gona sound like a total noob right here. I haven't watched the whole video yet and im already asking questions. can you use any pokemon from any deck thing like first gen vs the newest types of cards? or they have to be from the same set
that depends on your fight , if it will he casual you can used any cards from any sets, if in legues or tournament, there will be a choice for example you can use primal clash and furious fist cards that means you dont used any other deck or cards
I need to be clear on one thing. I understand that I can have up to 4 copies of the same card. my question, however, is if I'm able to have the same name of a Pokémon and different versions of it? For example, I have 4 Riolu and 3 of the same look exactly the same, but one has a different art and attack list. Am I able to have 4 and 4 of each Riolu, am I only allowed to use those 4, or do they have to be EXACTLY the same art and have the same attacks etc.?
So even if you still have cards in your deck, you can still lose if you don't have any basic Pokemon in your hand to put on your bench if you have no cards on your bench??
You don't put energy on your bench, you keep them in your hand unless you attach it to a Pokemon. But if you attach an energy to a Pokemon it goes behind the pokemon
+That Kid Angel Then you can't attack until you have two energy attached to the card. Think of each energy card like a battery that powers the ability. If your pokemon needs two energy cards then it's like a TV remote that needs two AA batteries to work, if you only add one then you don't have enough power to run it.
That Kid Angel No problem, I'm just starting to learn how to play this game myself actually since my 6yr old nephew just got into the TCG so I got no issues with passing down what I've learned so far heh.
I've been thinking about starting to play pokemon, but yours seems to be the only decent video that isn't broken up into like 20 parts, thanks bro
this really helped because I just got into pokemon and was confused about energy card and how to use them
me too!
Lol
Always wanted to get into the card game, collected during gen 1 as a kid but never actually learned to play... yeah :P
I play a lot of magic and now I've been getting back into Pokemon recently and I've been kind of wanting to try the card game for real this time. Thanks for the great outline and introduction to the core game mechanics. Great vid!
holy moly best explanation game ever thank you so much dude finally a good video after watching over 8 other ones
Thanks! :)
Thanks for the 'How to play' I really wanted to play this and you explained it really well. Thanks again!
do you know where I can get one of those boards
Theme decks used to be (and probably still are) packaged with them. You can also get nice ones made out of the same material as some mousepads from online vendors
+CaptainHobby lol I wrote that the day I got a theme deck
+AricAttack5576 and it came with one
online
i got 20 leftovers of those at school, and still do
Very helpful. I had absolutely no idea how to play until i watched this. I understand pokemon of course, but this video helped a ton.
Okay folks before anyone gets on me
All these years since the days of just 151 pokemon, i never knew how to play, i just normally collected them just to have them. About to start collecting the cards again (the hobby starts once again)
but overall brother.....Great video!!!!!
CaptainHobby i want to ask, what will happen to Energy attached to my pokemob if my pokemon got knock out?
Thanks for making this video. My son is just getting into Pokemon, X/Y, & this video will help me teach him how to play. Thanks again.
If you evolve a pokemon that has been damaged does it keep the damage or does it heal?
I know it removes the any effect, but the energy cards and the damage stays the same.
Super helpful intro; thank you!
Are there rules about which cards can be evolved by which other cards? For example, does team aqua have to be evolved by team aqua? I looked online, but couldn't find the answer.
+Eve Novak yes
Thanks dude.Btw,what deck do you recommend to make??
2 questions:
When you begin the game, are you supposed to put all of your pokemon onto the bench (even evolved ones?) or can you decide to keep pokemon in your hand?
When you retreat, do you discard the energy cards to pay the retreat cost? Or do you just need to have the energy to pay the retreat cost but the energy remains attached?
Thanks
Wad if I have a pokemon with low attacks that cant knock out my opponent pokemon so how do u know how much my opponent pokemon health left??
If I evolve a Pokemon, do i have to wait for my next turn to use its ability (like I would have to for an attack)?
in what time do we have to flip a coin for our statics like burn, sleep, poison, etc
Good overview - but what if you hand does not have any energy cards - how do you attack
What happens when a player runs out of energy or doesn't have a particular energy to use for a card in play?
Hi thanks. A question... what if you didn’t draw an energy card in your first deck. Do you wait until you draw it out by taking one card at a time when it’s your turn to draw? Thanks in advance.
Im just getting started with pokemon, might be a silly question but do you put the cards on the bench face up or down?
what is the board he's using to place his cards on called?
When u use a energy card, and after ur attacked, must u put energy card in discard pile?
I got a question, let's say you had your tangla and you had the grass energy on it. If you evolve it to tangrowth does the energy card on tangla transfer over to tangrowth or do you have to discard the energy card that was on tangla?
Correct me if I'm wrong but is the deck without sleeves old idk it looks it
Where did you get a playmat like that? I've been looking around and can't really find anything as good the one your video.
When did they add the new rule of laying down trainer cards first turn? Im just curious.
Can you put Pokemon from your hand on your bench at any time during your turn?
what will happen to your attached energy cards when your pokemon get ko'ed? and could the pokemon attacks in the same turn when its switched from the bench? thankyou :D

When your Pokemon faints do you discard the energy cards attached to it?
Im new to the TCG so why did you keep the water energy on the spheal after the powder snow?
Wat if u dont have alot or that u run out of energy in ur deck do u lose cause of not havin or running out of energy cards or u can keep on using them????
Is there a limit to the energy cards you can add on a Pokemon card ? my daughter got a card where you take off an extra 20 for every water energy attached. so can I add 10 water energies ?
No, that's perfectly allowed. Sometimes older cards would have a cap on the damage dealt, but modern cards usually let you stack as much damage as you want.
What if for weakness..., it just had a type of pokemon but no x or +. Anything? What does that mean then?
what if u don't have any energy cards do u end ur turn still?
Good overview. My nephew is huge into this and I wanted to understand how the game is played.
do you lose your energy cards after each attack or once you have say three energy cards you can keep spamming the same attack each turn with the same cards?
The way I play it is the energy cards don't go in the deck all the energy cards go right beside the discard pile and every turn u draw 1 unless u have a card to where u can search ur deck for some energy cards u draw two and its easer
since you can only use one energy per turn, can you put another energy on it another turn, and attack twice?
If you're Pokémon has a condition do you do damage
No, its actully very simple. If you buy a complete deck (not the best card but its very good for beginners) you get a card field with all the rules on it that you can follow. You also get a rule book (wich make sense) ... and after you read the rule book once you can play the game :)
what if you run out of energy cards
What if the defending pokemon which has attached energy, get knocked out???What will happen to the energy??
Do your supporter trainer card and energy count as your 5 bench cards ?
When u atack what does it mean that it costs like one water energy is it from health or wat is it
If you don't have seven cards in your deck can you pick cards until you get seven
Great video very helpful but one question if a pokemons move has a 90% accuracy rate durinf a tcg battle how would you settle that?
I don't think any Pokemon has less then %100 unless it's asleep or something
How many things can you do in one turn
I thought evolved pokemon could only be effect next round and remain as basic till your turn
When I use energie for attack dose it go away?
Energy is only discarded if the card text specifically says so. Otherwise, no.
thanks
how about if a creture die
Otis McCallum yes
How many actual Pokemon (not energy or trainer cards) do you have in your deck
What does sleeping, confused ect. Do
How did u get the board for the game ??
and type match ups counts 60 more attack HP to the pokemon if super affective
I don't get it on how we can't use stage 1 pokemon and stuff
Very helpful Thanks for taking the time to publish and post this.
I want want a quick replay that how much pokemon are in the bench
you need basic cards and you can put 1-5 basic cards in your bench
forever auslly o
Can u place more than one energy on a Pokemon in one turn
if you don't have energy in your hand ?
How do u get 5 bench cards if u take 7 in the beggining
Do you discard an attached energy after you attack? or does it stay on that active pokemon? and 1 damage counter 10hp?
You only discard Energy if an attack tells you to.
Where did he get the deck? i need one....
if we have a basic pokemon in are hand can we play it or do we have to play benched pokemon.
You can choose not to play basic Pokemon onto the bench, but you lose if you have no active Pokemon.
We're did you get your reshriam
where do u get those bords
Mr. Mini51 out of starter packs
In your face 😡
ok im gona sound like a total noob right here. I haven't watched the whole video yet and im already asking questions.

that depends on your fight , if it will he casual you can used any cards from any sets, if in legues or tournament, there will be a choice for example you can use primal clash and furious fist cards that means you dont used any other deck or cards
this seems so complicated...then i always thought.
Do have to evolve Pokemon what if you only have the stage 1 Pokemon can you put that in your bench
Only basic Pokemon can be in your bench, I think. I'm very new to this as well.
Yeah u can only put basic pokemon on bench and then after 1 turn u can evolve ur basic pokemon needs to be 1 turn in play until it evolves
I need to be clear on one thing.
I understand that I can have up to 4 copies of the same card. my question, however, is if I'm able to have the same name of a Pokémon and different versions of it? Am I able to have 4 and 4 of each Riolu, am I only allowed to use those 4, or do they have to be EXACTLY the same art and have the same attacks etc.?
three of them*
You are free to mix and match Riolu, but you can only have 4 maximum. So you can have 4 of one and 0 of the other, 2 of each, etc.
+CaptainHobby Thank you so much! This helps a lot.
that was helpful and if you could how do you make a good starter deck could buy starter decks or do you make them.
you could do both
You can make a custom deck or you can but a theme deck which ranges around $10
I've seen this video a million times. But now that I have an account you have +1 sub :D
The video only has 175,000 views you liar
?
My starter was a grenninja and it was a shiny which i think happens with like every starter deck... Did ipick a good starter
That deck is pretty playable, Personaly I would of got Delphox cos it does freaking 120 damage!!!!! But Greninja is good cos it has low attack cost.
@MrPJstahl
I'm well aware, but I just used them because I had the deck on hand.
Out of all the Pokemon cards can you use all of them or are there specific Pokemon you need in order to play?
In casual games you can use any cards but in things like tournaments they will probably put rules in it
In an actual game with experienced players, turns will be maybe a minute or two each with occasional exceptions.
So if you benched all of the basic pokemons from your hand, you can't put anymore basic pokemons on the bench?
You can only put 1-5 Pokemon on your bench
Where did u get the playmat????????
thanks a lot for this help. I didn't know how to play the pokemon card game but I do now.
How many Cards i need for a deck ?
Also thanks. You really helped me play pokemon.
Is it called a pokemon board or something?
So even if you still have cards in your deck, you can still lose if you don't have any basic Pokemon in your hand to put on your bench if you have no cards on your bench??
no just shuffle back the deck
If you don't have any Pokemon on your bench or an active Pokemon you lose
Where did you get that Pokemon game mat? I can't find a cheap one anywhere.
jojokitty101 AJ It comes with theme decks.
Gian Santos okay thanks
i have a question do used energy go in the dicard pile
No you put used energy behind the Pokemon you attached them to. But if your Pokemon gets knocked out then you put it into the discard pile
Yes
What kind of mic do you use?
So after you attack you don't have to discard the energies that the active pokemon used?
Correct - unless the attack specifically says that you need to discard energy.
Alright. Thanks.
What if you don't have any energy in your bench? How are you supposed to attack?
you dont attacj
You don't put energy on your bench, you keep them in your hand unless you attach it to a Pokemon. But if you attach an energy to a Pokemon it goes behind the pokemon
Amazing dude very well explained keep up the good work
You can play it or bench it
You use makers (pennies, small paper, etc)
1 maker=10 health loss
If you win do you get a card from your opponent.?
What does it mean if you have a shiny film on you Pokemon card?
If it's on the pokemon picture , it's a Holographic , if it's on the outside and not on the pokemon picture , it's a reverse Holographic .
If the foil is not on the picture of the Pokemon it's what we say a "reverse" and ones on the picture are what we call a "holo"
Can you evolve a Pokemon when they are in the bench
No
Can you only have 60 cards in your deck? I have.. I dont know about 1000!!
what happens if you attach an energy card, but you only have 1 attack and you need 2 energy cards to do an attack?
+That Kid Angel Then you can't attack until you have two energy attached to the card. Think of each energy card like a battery that powers the ability. If your pokemon needs two energy cards then it's like a TV remote that needs two AA batteries to work, if you only add one then you don't have enough power to run it.
THANKS SO MUCH
