The Book of Judith is considered part of the Apocrypha in many Christian traditions but was excluded from the Hebrew Bible and the Protestant canon. The reasons for its exclusion are multifaceted, and the decision largely depends on historical, theological, and literary considerations. Here's a detailed explanation of why the Book of Judith isn't in the Hebrew Bible and is absent from the Protestant canon: 1. Historical and Geographical Context The Book of Judith is set in a period that does not align with historical records from the time of the Jewish exile or the Persian Empire. It describes events involving the Assyrian Empire and the siege of a Jewish city, Bethulia, by the Assyrian general Holofernes. However, no historical evidence of such an event exists in any external records, and some scholars view the story as more allegorical or fictional rather than a literal account of events. The events depicted in the Book of Judith seem to be set during the time of the Persian Empire, but they don't fit within the known historical framework of that period (roughly the 6th-5th centuries BCE). This discrepancy may have led the Jewish religious authorities to question its authenticity and historical validity. 2. Theological Concerns The Book of Judith is a story of heroism, where a Jewish woman, Judith, saves her people by deceiving and killing the enemy general Holofernes. The story emphasizes faith, courage, and the triumph of the oppressed over their oppressors, but it also includes elements that some religious leaders may have found problematic: The role of women: While Judith is depicted as a strong and virtuous heroine, her role as the central character who takes violent action (beheading the general) might have raised concerns about how women were portrayed in the context of the religious and social values of the time. God’s involvement: While the Book of Judith presents a miraculous story, God’s intervention is less direct than in some other biblical stories. Some readers or religious authorities might have felt that the events were portrayed in too human or earthly a manner, rather than as divinely ordained. 3. Jewish Tradition and Canon Formation The Jewish canon (Tanakh) was solidified over centuries, and the process of determining which books would be included was not entirely uniform. By the time the Jewish community fully closed its canon in the 1st century CE, books like Judith were not included because they did not align with the established theological principles or historical traditions that were central to Jewish belief. The books that were included in the Hebrew Bible tended to be texts that had strong connections to Israel’s history, prophecy, or religious law. Since Judith is more of a narrative or novella and not primarily focused on law, prophecy, or the priestly line, it may have been deemed theologically less central to the Jewish tradition. 4. The Development of Christian Canons In the early Christian church, the Septuagint (a Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures) included the Book of Judith as part of the Deuterocanonical books, which were considered sacred by the Catholic and Orthodox traditions. The early Christian church did not have a finalized canon, and different Christian communities accepted various books as sacred. Catholic and Orthodox Churches: These traditions continued to include the Book of Judith in their biblical canon, considering it inspired Scripture, partly because it was found in the Septuagint (which was widely used in the early Christian world). Protestant Reformers: During the Reformation in the 16th century, reformers like Martin Luther rejected many of the books in the Apocrypha, including Judith. The Protestant Bible was then structured to align with the Hebrew Bible's canon, excluding books that were considered non-canonical by Jews. 5. Literary and Religious Style The Book of Judith is written in a literary genre that could be described as historical fiction or an allegorical novella. It does not offer the same level of historical detail or theological weight as other parts of the Bible. The absence of prophecy, law, or direct divine command in Judith may have contributed to its exclusion from the canon in both Jewish and Protestant traditions. Its storyline-involving a woman using cunning and violence to deliver her people-may have been seen as a bit too dramatic or symbolic for some religious authorities to consider it authoritative scripture in the same way they regarded the Torah, the Prophets, or other canonical books. 6. The Role of Judith in Christian Tradition In Catholic and Orthodox traditions, the Book of Judith is regarded as an edifying work, often read for spiritual inspiration and moral lessons, rather than as a factual historical account. While it's not used as a doctrinal foundation like the Gospels or Epistles, it still serves as an example of faith and courage in the face of adversity. Summary of Why the Book of Judith Was Excluded: Historical authenticity: The events described in the Book of Judith are not attested to by historical sources and don't align with known historical events. Theological concerns: Some elements of the story, like its portrayal of a woman as the primary hero, or the indirect role of God, may have caused unease among certain religious leaders. Jewish canon formation: By the time the Jewish canon was solidified, the Book of Judith was not included because it didn’t fit within the religious, historical, or prophetic framework that shaped the canon. Protestant Reformation: During the Reformation, Protestants rejected the Deuterocanonical books (including Judith) because they were not part of the Hebrew Bible. Literary style: The Book of Judith is considered more of a narrative than a text of prophecy or law, which made it less central to both Jewish and Protestant canon formation. In summary, the exclusion of Judith from the Hebrew Bible and the Protestant canon was largely based on questions of authenticity, theological considerations, and its genre as a narrative rather than a book of prophecy or law. However, it remains part of the Catholic and Orthodox canons and continues to be valued as a story of courage, faith, and divine deliverance.
Yes, protestant rejected Judith, but Jesus founded a Church who has the authority to bind and release based on Mat 16:18-19. We must find that Church that Jesus founded in 33 AD, not the protestants that Mathin Luther started in 1517.
I drew great inspiration from the Book of Judith. She saved Israel on mountain top when enemies blocked off the water pumps that pumped to the tops. This pious, intelligent, brave woman saved Israel.
I find it deeply inspiring that Judith used her wit and faith rather than physical strength to bring victory to her people. Her bravery in the face of overwhelming power truly stands out. But here’s something to consider-if God worked through Judith in this way, does that mean the ends justify the means in situations of faith? Can violence be acceptable when it's divinely guided, or should there be a limit to what is considered righteous action? Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this moral dilemma.
The Hebrew midwife had to lie to pharaoh when commanded to kill the male babies, phinehas has to killed the medianite woman & Israelite to stop the plague & rahab lied to save the spies & many more, all of them have received favors & blessings from God in result of their actions. When your faith & beliefs is being threatened would you not do the same. I think this calls for strength & courage that we just don't give up our core beliefs to the rulers of this world. We have been commanded not to fear or lose heart.
Defending yourself drom harm is always moral. The exact actions being considered as defense thats a grey area. People say Joan of Ark was evil. They where invaded and the people felt defeated and she gave them back the will to resist. Now we do not need to experience that if you ask me. But this political childish back stabing isnt a better thing.
Look who the Israelis are fighting right now in response to an unprovoked attack and you have your answer. And, there are many stories of miracles within the IDF including soldiers being warned by a vision of Rebecca not to go into boobey-trapped buildings. Only fools attack God’s people and they pay the price..
Judith is my favorite chapter. I read about her in the apocrypha. My guess is that the patriarchy of that time didn’t want to give a woman credit for disarming a powerful general’s army using only beauty and profound faith and survive unscathed.
Given Judith's profound display of faith and leadership, why has her story been excluded from so many versions of the Bible, despite its powerful message and historical significance?
Because u must have(as a minimum) 2 witnesses to establish its authenticity. It can't be collaborated as inspired writing (from God). All though it's in the Catholic bible I have (its old).
My name is Judith. I always hated that name and went by Judy. I was forced to start using it aftet 9/11 on all legal documents. I now have a different opionion of my name and it helps explain my devotion to God and fearlessness in my stand for the truth. Praise JAH
Once more a very compelling story. This is not the normal thing you'd normally read in the bible, but I would of liked to have in my new king James bible. We have not this to read, but you help us to know. Someday I may find out who you are. Your an excellent teacher, and god is watching, and maybe smiling. God Bless
Because a woman was involved! God knows that the ones in charge back when they decided what made it into biblical texts could never show the power of the woman! Women have been persecuted for thousands of years, because of the power we have within!! Soon the divine feminine and divine masculine will be balanced!! 💗
well they aren't banned. But also, make sure you differentiate between the apocrypha and the frankly different stuff that was written by gnostics and so on which go much more completely off-piste
It is included and always has been in the Roman Catholic Bible too. While Luther lusted after women, he didn't like strong women. He removed Judith from most Protestant Bibles
OMG, is there a special school where writers can learn how to drag things out as long as possible and say the same things over and over and over again? This kind of writing makes me angry by wasting my precious time.
I like this story of Judith. All believers have a call on their lives at some point. Few accept the call by Jesus when it comes. Judith is a perfect example of faith in action.
@timdeegan3753 Hi thanks for your reply, the Bible is a very interesting subject, it takes a lot of study to get into it, I hope you have plans of time to study. Yours sincerely Northern Irish viewer.
The story of Judith whether factual or allegorical, is inspirational. When men are absent, God works through the agency of courageous and devout women. The Book of Judges is testament to that. Read about Deborah and Jael, the latter who assassinated the military commander, Sisera.
Leviticus 26:12-13 13 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.
ok.... I have one question, if Truth and Love is the most important qualities in this realm, why are so many books talking about deception and winning throu deception or right out bloodshed? Shouldn't Truth and Love win over lies and deceptions? Just a curious mind looking for answers. God bless 🙏
You forgot to mention that Judith had an exit plan at hand. She had requested the general to be allowed to leave for the mountains when her time for prayer came. The soldiers did not suspect anything when she finally left after beheading the General.
It is All about the Righteousness of God that made this Woman stands out. If it was not of God's Righteousness then she would not & could not have done the Will of God although she was up to to do it, and is what really takes for her to be used by God. God Speed to All.
I am a Man and I beg Yahweh to give me the confidence courage and faith of Judith. Do not let my life be wasted in vain, rather use me for His greater purpose. I am but a slave, bought and paid for by the blood of Yeshua Hamashiac. My eternal Master, brother, friend, teacher, healer, Savior. Messiah
She isn't inthe bible because King James had a rather fragile ego, and was power hungry. Allowing a powerful woman to be in the bible, would have fueled the resolve of Sottish women land owners that were , putting him in his place. That just wouldn't do. So he changed the bible to subjugate women to men. He should haven't known better, knowing that Pictish, Highlander and Norse blood makes for very stubborn women.
King James had nothing to do with it. It couldn't be verified in a historical concept or accepted as a truly inspired word of God. The translation process is a story that practically outdoes any modern spy or espionage story today. Very highly qualified Christian scholars and ancient language experts were used for the translation and 'other' organisations had to be constantly shut out of any input. Nothing had this type of security around it. The subterfuge that was tried for influencing the translation was very sophisticated and still it failed. Same with the other books that were excluded.
Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon not Assyria. Assyria conquered the northern kingdom of Israel. But Assyria failed to conquer the southern kingdom of Judea when God sent an angel to kill 185000 Assyrian soldiers in their sleep delivering Jerusalem. Later Babylon under king Nabopolassar conquered Assyria. Then Babylon under king Nebuchadnezzar conquered the southern kingdom of Judea. This began the 70 years of captivity as prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah. This was because of their continued sin and rejection of God
I knew there's was another woman, besides Queen Esther....now I know it's Judith, another strong woman from the past . Surely this woman, Judith is not a "danzel in distress" a fighter indeed like Queen Esther and definately kicks ass. my kind of women.
Judith was in the Bible for 1500 years until Luther and the Protestants removed it from their version because it did nit agree with their theology. The Majority of Christians still have Judith in their Bible.
Glory Glory Glory to God, the creator of all that was that is and ever will be. I am brave the energy of this amazing woman, prostrate myself before God as a vessel to be used for his will. Glory Glory Glory to would you like the creator of all. The greatest on high more powerful than anyone or anything could ever be. I give myself to you Lord God heart mind body and soul. I set aside My Free Will Yahweh asking that it will be your will done through me.
SO WHAT? You never answered the question! WHY WAS IT BANNED? One source says because it wasn't written in Hebrew, it was written by an outsider. What say you?
They chose Authoritative Books of men, NOT WOMBman. The Patriarchy wanted to keep WOMBman under their Authority. The Patriarchy is falling. There will be a BALANCE of Divine Feminine & Divine Masculine.🙏🩷☯️💙🙏

All glory belongs to God
Nebuchadnezzar was king of Babylon, not Assyria, the general's name was Holofernes not Hollow Furnace. This AI needs to be replaced by one that works.
They trying
Also she was a Generals wife, they were seen as the higher arch of the township.
I was just going to write the same thing...then saw your comment!
The AI needs to be replaced by a human being with a soul

Thank you for taking the time to share. That was very informative.

😂I picked Judith as my Catholic Confirmation name!
❤ You go Judi ! Love Bible heroes stories.
See more! Yes please and thank you very much! The stories of the Matriachs are an inspiration for how women and girls should be!
A story that resonates greatly!
Judith is my favorite chapter. I read about her in the apocrypha. My guess is that the patriarchy of that time didn’t want to give a woman credit for disarming a powerful general’s army using only beauty and profound faith and survive unscathed.
Yet, they were okay with Deborah's story in the book of Judges, though. 🤔
@ yeah can’t put too many female heroes in the Bible , don’t want us to get any fancy ideas ! 😂
My name is Judith this was a great story thank you
Given Judith's profound display of faith and leadership, why has her story been excluded from so many versions of the Bible, despite its powerful message and historical significance?
My guess is that women didn't have much power or say so, and this book would have gone against those old beliefs of woman being in charge.
It is in my Catholic Bible. PRAISE GOD AND HER INSPIRED COURAGE♥️♥️♥️

It sounds a lot like the story of Deborah in Judges.

What is the significance of the pentagram in the story? The pictures keep on showing them
I too wonder
What pentagram, are you referring to the 6 sided star known as the Star of David

And yet most people regardless if they're catholic or protestant, have never seen the book of Judith in their bibles
Also, Christians don't pray to humans, but to God
Glory Glory Glory to God, the creator of all that was that is and ever will be. I am brave the energy of this amazing woman, prostrate myself before God as a vessel to be used for his will. Glory Glory Glory to would you like the creator of all. The greatest on high more powerful than anyone or anything could ever be. I give myself to you Lord God heart mind body and soul. I set aside My Free Will Yahweh asking that it will be your will done through me.
I try, I am weak. I first need HIM to be my strength, then step forward in HIS GLORY…. And that is each day♥️🙏♥️
