They freaking alluded to Junpei eventually joining the Jujutsu School with the Ending for half the season, and then it turns out to be a Trick the entire time! This episode was the first time I was actually in shock watching an anime. And then you add in Mahito and Sakuna mocking Itadori the whole time and it just adds to that vibe of "Oh, this isn't going to end like most Shonen do"
Gojo literally says in one of the first episodes that he’s going to see some really horrific shit (paraphrasing) Sukuna is the king of curses, not some misunderstood being, considering he killed Yuji with zero hesitation noone should be surprised Junpei went the way of Nina 😭
there's also crying blood tanjiro. never explicitly says he will kill her but since that's what he always does anyway its the sheer intensity of his attacks and, you know, the whole being so mad he starts leaking blood out his eyes that terrifies us
Junpei had so much potential as a character. Kinda sucks that he died. He would've been so op with the other fighters with his new moon dreggs ability. I hate it when writers do this, but it ultimately it is what it is.

The series is purely meant to spin shonen tropes on their head and tell a completely new and fresh story at the same time
The average shounen manga/anime would have Junpei be added as a ally and the power of nakama will win over all evil. But the reason why Jujutsu Kaisen is so good is because it subverts the expectation of the story and make a dark and depressing twist.

Having read the latest manga chapter, I thought the reason behind Yuji being able to damage Mahito was due to Sukuna's soul unknowingly strengthening Yuji. But it looks like it's Yuji's cursed technique!
Being able to hurt the spul is something everybody can do, they just gotta be able to see the outline of their own soul and everybody elses, yuji is only special in this regard since he is one of the few people to see it, and also because he has the strongest soul, or is atleast heavenly implied to have a stronger soul than sukuna.
Gege already gave us a hint behind itadori's cursed technique in the first season damn. and We all thought all he does is just plain ol punches, mofo punches so deep it even touches the soul.

The way I see it, mahito had never fought someone who pushed his habilities and helped him understand what he can't do. This fight allowed him to learn all this transformation stuff that he used with mechamaru
Mahito is like a toddler inside the world of the curses, he was recently created. So he has a childish demeanor and a not being serious at all personality while at the same being horrifyingly cruel and manipulative (its logical since he was created from the hate between humans)
