@@williamthomson4450 why are the black ones used in sun? They absorb more light and heat and warm up more easily, thus making them break faster, or no?
Lol looks so funny using those tiny pieces of sandpaper that are supposed to go on a certain sander. :) lol. Had a painting company for years. And For anyone doing a project where you will be sanding without a sander, the most comfortable with the most control and speed are the blocks that look like a sponge covered in sandpaper. You will find most professional painters etc use them (they’ll use the larger sheets to attach to a device with an extension pole to sand the whole wall before painting, most will sand the walls lightly between coats as well to catch any debris that landed on the paint before drying, just in case you’d loose any sleep not knowing that 🤭🤪) ♥️🇨🇦
@@DIYDalia darling i have many sanders and a container of papers, sometimes its easier to grab a square and hand sand your project. i do that all the time! :)
My god, dis the sander save me time on my projects in uni. But unfortunately i also had to go manual when i was home working as all the tools were university property. It’s pretty time consuming and rough and i ended up with many scratches and burns and i wished i had the sander on hand.
Even a "little" project like this, getting "specialized" tools really help. A random orbit sander would be ideal. A sanding block is also good, but not the little ones at the big box stores. I use the Preppin Weapon sanding block, originally designed for auto body sanding by a bodyshop owner. Fits so much more comfortably in the hand and it's very easy to change the paper. Amy suggested the sanding sponges and they are my go to for the edges.
hmmm...i would go higher and turn slats at an angle kind of like horizontal blinds that are stationary. good job though, turned out nice and lights are always a great touch!
Great idea - plus it would help channel a breeze through the fence. Btw Not to be a debbie-downer but not sure how the HOA or mgmt feels about her changing the aesthetic of the building and usually discourage it.
Love the concept! Just wondering how it provides privacy. I'm guessing the angel of the video doesn't give us the full view (sometimes this don't transfer well to video or picture)?
Thanks! When you look into the other balconies the bars are so thin it’s like they don’t even exist ie you can see literally everything. For mine you really can’t see much (bc of the angles) but up close you can still see out. I didn’t want it to be an opaque screen because I wanted light to come through. I also wanted to just see something more visually appealing than the building construction because it’s my living room view :)
You could also use an sheer outdoor material as a curtain. Mount them on both sides along with a long dowel at the top so you can close it!!! It is an option. Options are always nice!!!
FYI: zip ties will wear out within the first year. Because of the weather. Don't let them just sit there until they rot and wood falls on whoever's underneath it.
Actually I used dental floss to put up chicken wire so my cat does not go though the slat on my balcony. I put it up 10 years ago and it is still standing. I live in MN also. Dental floss is a great go to. I have used in in the toilet tank when the chain in the tank rust out. I have used it for emergency sewing jobs. I even used when one a trip and my leather strap for my watch broke. I have used it even to sew up my tent when it got a big rip and that was 10 years ago and still holding strong. Dental floss is cheap and will last so much longer then string or thread.
Plants 🪴 🌿 🪴 🌿 give it a lovely zen look, too. artificial ivy screens. Look neat, too. I dig that it's a lady doing some diy building. My hubby doesn't use tools but I do and make all the repairs needed anywhere 😂 I love it!
It's cool that your apartment complex doesn't give you a hard time about adding a temporary adjustment to your patio. I don't know why they would since it's not a permanent change and it's no different than adding those screens.
I used wooden garden trellis in that criss cross pattern, already made and it looks nice and gives good coverage, I just attached it with zipties, super easy!
Wood pallets are usually a lot rougher wood and require a lot more sanding. Also, if she only has her apartment to work out of, there’s a lot more nail pulling, disassembly and getting rid of the extra wood. (Also, dragging the palettes up the stairs). But using palettes for other projects is a good idea
Looks great, but I've seen on Pinterest people buying black landscape fabric and creating screens with those but doubling it up and making little pockets on one side to create a living wall, stuffing them with succulents and trailing plants. SUCH a great idea.
Beautiful outcome! I also love how lenient your apartment complex is. I worked for different property managements and they were all super super strict about external modifications (even temporary)

I'm late to the party, I know but a suggestion. Zip ties, particularly the black ones, degrade pretty quickly outdoors. You certainly don't want this thing launching into the air in a strong wind. Harbor Freight has stainless steel zip ties. They aren't all that expensive (it's the best place to buy most consumables), are stronger, and won't degrade. I'd still worry about it ripping off the railing in a storm. The slats will help a lot but I'm conservative with these sorts of things. They're just designed to keep a person from going over the edge.
Almost all finishes will yellow, some slower than others. Any oil or resin based for sure. If you build a planter box the length of your balcony and mount it onto the top rail, you can place small plant pots in it and it will hold them securely, and the box and the plants will give you a pretty screen several inches higher and lots of greenery that will not take up floor space.
I use Scarlett runner beans in pots to create pretty vines along my railings. They grow fast and can take a bit of neglect.
