When I took a look at the Entertainment Software Association study, I was a little surprised to find that yours truly, the Factual Feminist herself, counted as a gamer. I do not recall playing a video game since Pac-Man in a bar in Cambridge, Mass-in 1980. The study counted anyone who plays, however occasionally, simple smartphone games like Bejeweled or Angry Birds. I don’t fault the researchers for their findings. It’s great that the world of games is expanding and there are more women creating and playing games. But a distinction is in order. There are casual game players-and there are hard-core gamers for whom highly complex, competitive video games are a primary life passion. Adult women are not a key demographic here. Consider just one typical data sample: Researchers at UCLA have been studying the pastimes of college freshmen for more than 40 years. For incoming freshmen, 65 percent of girls but fewer than 19 percent of boys said they played no video games at all in a typical week. Among hardcore gamers who play more than 20 hours a week, the ratio of boys to girls is 7 to 1. This huge gender gap has persisted since the researchers first started asking about video games in the mid-1990s-and it looks like it’s here to stay. But are video games rife with sexism? Do they promote a culture of misogyny and violence that must be dismantled? My answer is no. As I looked into the literature on gaming, I discovered that gamers make a lot of people nervous. Not only are most of them male-but the games they like tend to be action-packed, competitive, and often violent. And they like to play them-a lot. Gamers have long faced disapproval from moms and teachers and-above all-researchers and politicians-concernocrats-both liberal and conservative. For years, games such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty were said to cause violence, even though no one was able to establish a clear correlation. Those concerns died down when Psychological Bulletin published a major article in 2010 declaring the video game scare “much ado about nothing.” One graph showed that as video games have surged in popularity, youth crime has plummeted. But now, gamers are dealing with a new army of critics: gender activists and hipsters with degrees in cultural studies. These critics are concerned that gaming is a largely hetero-patriachal capitalist pursuit. Why isn’t gaming more inclusive? Why must there always be male heroes? Why are the few females always portrayed as either Damsels in distress or sex objects? These critics have made some useful points about “sexist tropes and narratives.” But they ignore the fact that the world of gaming has become more inclusive. There are games that fit a vast array of preferences, and games with responsibly proportioned and appropriately garbed female protagonists. Yet the video game gender police have become harsh and intolerant. Many of them want more than more women on both sides of the video screen-they want the male video game culture to end. Male gamers, as a group, do evince a strong a preference for games with male heroes and sexy women. Could that be because they are-male? There is no evidence that these games are making males racist, misogynist, or homophobic. In fact, all the data we have suggests that millennial males-born and raised in video game nation-are far less prone to these prejudices than previous generations.

News article have addressed sexism in the gaming industry - it was so bad to the point female employees have walked out and companies have been sued! These sexist men are the ones responsible for creating video games sexualizing female characters that gamers play. It’s not a coincidence there’s sexism in the gaming community and female gamers are raising their voices because they’ve had enough. When they do they are shut down and bullied. That’s not creating a positive environment for women.
People aren’t born sexist - it’s learned. Sexism and entertainment should never go hand in hand.
The only thing Christina Hoff Summer is doing is giving her toxic opinion using forms of gaslighting, deflection, excuses, and minimization that invalidates women. You don’t need to be a psychologist to know what that is.

I'm curious, why is there a "Male gaming culture" and why are they scared of it dying? What's wrong with games continuing to become more inclusive? I'm not saying we need to see the end of male protagonists or damsels in distress, but how would it be bad to flip the script? Why can't Zelda fight along side Link? Yeah, some people are taking things too far, this goes for both sides of the argument, always does, someone is going to jump the shark. But if you step back and think reasonably for a second, the gaming industry and gaming culture as a whole has nothing to lose by including women, but so much to gain. With a larger audience, we can see more ideas, more possibilities. Gaming companies will have a much larger audience to advertize to, more revenue, meaning more money to pump into new titles and ideas.

Feminism is not a black and white ideology, however it would seem the current ruling party is more interested in the establishment of a matriarchy than they are with breaking down the patriarchy and setting up true equality. If we try to appease everyone the gaming industry will become bland completely regular and uninteresting thus killing the gaming culture. That's full raid in Destiny 2 (plus maybe some more activities), 2-5 ranked matches in CS:GO, an average session in GTA V online mode, 4-6 raids in Escape from Tarkov. All in all, a standart gaming session, nothing hardcore about it. As for "for an adult, 20 hours is hardcore gaming" - I study in uni and work. As stated above, you easily burn 20 hours in 2-3 days.

I will at least say she knows how to brand herself. But some of her claims, lack evidence, and in other cases she includes evidence that when looked at says a lot less than what she is actually claiming. But that's no different then what is done on the other side by folks like feminist frequency. I would guess Anita bends her narrative around her evidence quite a bit more, but I tend not to spend much time in videos that lean to heavily on one side of the gender war or another. There tends to be quite a bit of drama, and if not at least agenda's at play that tend to light up the drama more.

First off, it was a joke I found funny on the internet ad decided to repost here because I have no life. Second, that's kind of the point. She is not a gamer and yet after several weeks has presented an argument based off of factual evidence and logical thinking. I do think that a few of Anita Sarkeesian's points do have merit. However the evidence she a large amount of the evidence she provides is either taken out of context from both the game and story (Dragon Age: Origins from her recent video springs to mind as well as Red Dead Redemption Bioshock Bioshock 2 Far Cry 3 and Dishonored) or a downright fabrication (Hitman series and Mafia 2).

Anita Sarkeesian outright defies the basic logic and standards of research. Research is supposed to be examining evidence and coming to a conclusion based on what you've found. She comes in with a preconceived notion and cherry picks evidence to support that. Working by that mindset, you could almost literally find sexism anywhere you wanted to.
When you consider the other factors at play here, such as her intentions, it doesn't really matter if her methods occasionally bring out good points. At this point, I feel as though anyone in the gaming industry who takes her seriously should not be taken seriously themselves, and any one of them who *knows* she's full of it but chooses to back her up because it's the easier, more beneficial move for their career doesn't deserve a single ounce of respect from gamers.

I will say, as a hardcore gamer woman, there have been times where men have interrogated me about my choice in games to judge whether I'm a "real gamer" or not, and that can be frustrating. I'd say that's the only mysoginistic thing I've ever really seen in the gaming community. But most of the time when I tell guys I game, they just get excited that they have another gaming friend!

I'm not a gamer, per se, but my fiance is pursuing game development as a career, and now that I've become more open-minded to the subject, I find more and more that videogames are the future of media.
That being said, I like that Ms. Sommers is defending the gamer subculture with facts and rationality. I don't love all games, and let's face it, (some) gamers can be major assholes (not all, of course), but saying it causes misogyny and violence isn't factual at all. Also, people like Sarkeesian are con-artists scamming the media and guillible SJWs.

I guess "gamer" is too often associated with angry man-child nerds and 2edgy preteens/teenagers, to the point where it's hard to separate stereotype from reality.
Stereotypes exist for a reason, as they are a sort of shorthand for identifying a group or a culture/subculture, but it can be a slippery slope to overgeneralizing a group made up of autonomous individuals.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate this video. As a female gamer I was really offended when Anita Sarkessian attacked gamers the way she did. I've never thought of video games as sexist. I'm 29 and I've been playing games since I was 8. I wouldn't mind her videos so much if she didn't just focus on the women or if she didn't outright lie about certain games. She tries so hard to make it seem like females are the only ones objectified in games. My prime example is Kratos from the God of War series, she complains that women are not only objectified but they're not dressed properly for battle. Throughout the GoW series the camera focuses a lot on Kratos best asset, his bulging muscles and not only that but he wears a loincloth to fight in. I could literally name tons of examples where guys are "eye candy" in video games and where ridiculous clothes. Wish they would stop attacking no issues and focus on real ones!

It is not the point whether Christina is a feminist or not. The point is - all her claims and "valid" research is not valid and NOT TRUE. THERE ARE NO VALID LONG TERM STUDIES about gamers. The picture is not as rosy as she paints when it comes to young males. The psychologists have been seen the negative trends and gaming contributes to this.

I'm 18, I've been playing games for the past 15 years, and look at the effects on my life, I have a part time job, am still in highschool, I'm calm, collected, I've been part of air cadets for 6 years. My peers respect me and the way that I live. The only negative effects that have come into my life are from other people that just want to make themselves feel better. And like she says, most gamers don't really give a shit about race, age, gender, etc. We just all want to get back to playing the game.

The thing is, gaming IS very inclusive. You can log on and play regardless of who you are. People with personality disorders, physical handicaps, people who get rejected by their society can all get online and not get burned for it but instead valued on their in-game behaviour and merits(their performance and achievements in the game). For example, trying to get a new high score will not be impossible if you only have one leg in real life, nor will a game like World of Warcraft deny you achievements because of your real life race or gender.

Real sexism happens in a thousand small plausibly deniable ways. People don't hold up signs saying "no girls allowed." but when they get taken less seriously, are held to different standards and subtly, quietly are denied small opportunities it adds up. It's almost impossible to see it if you're not on the business end of it. You might not rape anybody but people who do are more likely to in a society where women are viewed as objects, and where they're not taken as seriously, they're less likely to report it. It's not all about you, it's about the whole culture.
If you think there's no sexism in the gaming industry, I invite you to go to E3 and count the number of scantily clad male strippers cast as "booth babes." vs the female ones. That's just math --you can't get any more logical than that.

Sarkeesian and her ilk drove me to see more of the negative side of feminism (which I feel they need to be culled off into their own group labled "SJW-ism" or something of the like) and abandon all association with the term in kind. I also saw a lot of the criticisms we have been hearing around about the new videogame critics. I think the generation of people born and raised after the 80's have some really weird views of the world.

Sommers did have good points. In fact, I know that whole "X percent of gamers are women" thing is cherry-picked because my mother (among others in my largely female family) plays casual games all the time. I am ABSOLUTELY for equality, but in modern times, people seem to be believing in this strawman version of equality more and more and completely ignoring the outside world. What they want is equal numbers of every sex and race and etc. in everything, which is just completely unrealistic.

Many women now look at games for their ideal 'hero'. Muscular, fearless, powerful, setting unrealistic standards of the ideal man. How many women NPCs are actually beaten up in a video game compared to male NPCs?
In the early era of gaming, damsel in distress was the easiest form of story telling and that's why it is most used (mostly because of data limitations). You didn't need a long paragraph on why or how Princess peach got kidnapped. You saw bowser take her and you knew that you had to get her back. That was it. I never saw Peach as a weak female character. She was a princess not a general, she ruled with love and intelligence and not with an army, getting over powered by a turtle bull was understandable since all her servants were also non combatants.
You are missing one critical element. Engines have its limits and making it more complicated will cost more.
