- If your new around here where Jess and Jon and we love building tiny homes on wheels to travel the world! The trouble is that every kind of camper vehicle has things about them that make them brilliant and things that are a compromise. So we figured, seeing as we enjoy build them so much, we could build campers for specific amazing adventures. One thing that is on our bucket list it to travel in the 'real winter' to experience a proper snowy Christmas and everything that goes with it. So, we have set out on a mission to build the ultimate winter campervan. A van that can withstand, and keep us warm, in polar temperatures and give us plenty of space to feel cozy and comfy on the long cold winter nights. Enter our Sainsbury's (supermarket for our non-UK friends) delivery van. We figured that being insulated enough to be a refrigerator, it should be able to do the opposite and keep the cold out and keep us toasty and warm inside. It also has lots of other benefits too like being lightweight, and, the holy grail of van builds, being wide enough to set the bed width ways. So come with us as we turn this supermarket delivery van into our cozy winter cabin.

Every now and again you come across a channel where you can just keep watch for hours. This is one of them, keep up the great work guys from a new subscriber 🔥👍
Thanks very much coully, lovely of you to say 😁
definitely not he's the most annoy prat ever thinks he's a geezer more if a pure plonker
I've worked with these rear loaders as a supermarket driver. They get absolutely battered in their working life, clocking up over 100k in no time, driven up and down potholed tracks all day, to and from farms in the more rural areas. But if you've luckily found a good one then they're ideal for conversion.
Yeah it’s hard to find any commercial vehicle that’s not had a hard life hey, 🤞 she’s a good en
Compared to other used vans, supermarket vans are probably some of the best kept with the black box that penalties you for speeding or revving too high and the good maintenance schedules
@@tomhornsey9738 I totally agree Tom 👍
Like every van does then..
To answer a few comments. They have minimal maintenance and lightfoot is ignored by most drivers so they get ragged. They're delivery vans, so they will usually be running all day 6am till 12pm 7 days a week clocking up far more miles than a tradesman's van for example.
The so-called happiness, is with the right person to each other, comfortable way to live together.
I work in a Sainsbury’s online department and I’ve always said how great one of these would be for a camper van. Looking forward to following along the build
Thanks very much Hayden 👍
Glad you’ve gone for a walk through cab. Makes life easy and if you get moved on or need to move on at night it makes life easy.
Yep that’s what we think too Peter 👍
I love projects like this, cannot wait to see the next stage of the build 🤝
Cheers mate 👍
I love watching a genius at work , this build is going to be amazing
Not sure about being a genius 😂😂 but thanks very much that’s lovely 💙
You two are adorable. Love the banter between you. Loving your journey. Keep going. Can't wait to see the end product.
Thanks very much😁 much appreciated 💙
Fantastic, I've just finished my own Renault trafic build and loved doing it... But now watching you guys starting this project make's me want to start another ! Love the video's 🙂👍
Brilliant 🤩 hope your loving using it! Van travel is the absolute best! There’s something amazing about building your own home to travel in! If your on Facebook or insta we’d love it if you send us a pic, we love seeing people’s builds! Thanks very much 💙
Brilliant stuff both of you can’t wait to see this one develop 👍
Similar project on the horizon 😉
Thanks very much stu 👍
Good to see a young cple doing there research and using logic & common sense just can not go wrong excellent keep up the good work and we appreciate you sharing your knowledge even for us old timers :)
That’s a really nice thing to say thank you💙We are so glad to hear it’s helpful.
You're back!
Very interesting and entertaining.
Thought provoking too.
Can't wait to see how the story unfolds.
Good luck with this daring endeavour!
Pete 😊
Thanks very much pete 😁
I use to drive one of this Vans and I love it. Was thinking for a build like this with one of them, can't wait to se the end result. You do a great job.
Cheers Andrei 👍
I've wanted to make a portable sauna for renting out at events or for travelling but couldn't find a big enough vehicle. This seems perfect. Easy to work on and plenty of open space for a beginner. Informative video thank you.
No worries, thanks for watching 😁
Obsessed with this build already, dreaming of my own. Look forward to seeing the whole of this. Absolutely brilliant!
Thanks very much 💙 we are really enjoying it and can’t wait to use it and see if it does what we hope it will 🤞all the best for your van 💙
Watched this first video and im hooked already 😂. Looking forward to the rest of the build!
Cheers Barry 👍
Always impressed with the amount of tools and equipment you have.
Don’t encourage him Graham!!! 😂😂💙 thanks very much. We might have a tiny house but we have a big shed 😂
I’m a Tesco Delivery Driver, nice to see you ripping a Sainsbury’s one apart, wouldn’t know how to feel if it was a Tesco one, nice to see so far, can’t wait to see the rest of the build
Cheers mate, 😂😂 I’ve had a Tesco box before too but just used that as a big tool box with the side shutters and the boxes inside 👍
@@truebluetravellers that’s one way to use one
As an ex Sainsburys driver, I like seeing you rip apart a delivery van. Although the Mercs are better than the Tesco's Ivecos. 😅
Great video glad you got the older van with the gear change not on the stalk as they much nicer to drive and engines felt more powerful also it’s really good to see how much you can change the inside of the boxes
Cheers Anthony 👍
Since seeing this van conversion last night, today I've become obsessed with it, this is something I really want to do, been scrolling past these fridge van's thinking nope no good, but now seeing this I'm thinking omg these are going to be the next rage of conversions, just think how much more there is to see when sitting that bit higher up 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank lee, I think they make a cracking camper, and compared to panel vans they are so much cheaper, I can’t believe how much more space u get inside due to the square walls too,
One of the negatives I would say tho is they don’t have a/c
@@truebluetravellers know what you mean, I've looked at former BT openreach Ducato van's and I can't understand why they never had a/c in them either,
Interesting project, and looking forward to watching the progress. 😎👍
Cheers mate 👍
Awesome. Can’t wait to see the finished product
Cheers mate 👍
Been looking forward to seeing your transformation, impressed already👍
Hi Allegro 😁, thanks very much, we are stoked with it and can’t believe how much more room it feels like you have with square walls!
Great progress, keen to see the next installment
Thanks very much 😁
I’ve driven a few of those Sainsburys vans. They have a “green road” gadget , you have to stick to the speed limits, so it won’t have been thrashed. Love the build so far 😊😊😊. Thanks for sharing
Cheers mate, well that sounds promising 👍
Might give the engine and gearbox a shock soon you go over 56mph though 😂
Thanks for this video, bloody brilliant 👍🏻
Cheers Damon 👍
This is going to be truly amazing, my dream trip too ❤
Thanks Tracey, we normally hate the cold but I think this will be an exception 😁
I'm disabled and I've worked at Glastonbury disabled camspite for almost twenty years. It's gettting harder for me now, and I would LOVE to get some custom small van like this. Absolutely no chance of me doing it, but I can dream. Love this content
Thanks 😁 we don’t appreciate how things we don’t even think about in life can be so much more of a challenge for disabled people, I used to service a forklift at a place that built aids for disabled kids, broke my heart every time but also so glad to see people are building things to help them access more places, I hope u get that van one day 👍
Great video! I enjoyed that. Looking forward to seeing how you do the cab walk-through.
Thanks very much, it’s a job I was looking forward to on this build, always nice to learn something new 👍
Very excited about this build! Good luck tbt! 💙
That’s so lovely, thanks very much 💙
What a good job you’re doing👍
Thanks Nina
Great job guys, every you tube channel shy s away from a walk through so kudos to you no messing about you purchased the bellows seal, overall its looking good , also like the way you cleaned and sealed the chassis before re attachting the body = longer life ! zero rust.
Thanks very much, we weren’t sure how we were going to do it until we started but it’s worked out really well and we are stoked with it. A walk through just makes life so much easier….. and give me quicker access to the fridge and pantry 😂 thanks, like you say just makes sense to when we have such an easy opportunity to 😀
@@truebluetravellers Biggest bonus with a cut-away is an easy exit both for fire and problems when parked overnight and there s trouble where camped .
This is a surprise! I'd thought you'd be out and about in your Defender. But, I like surprises. Looks like another interesting build. I've grown weary of excessive heat. Looking forward to following you on your winter wonderland travel!
Hi Judith, 2 builds followed by 2 epic adventures, we normally hate the cold but I think this trip will be an exception
Can’t wait 😁
Wow cant wait to see this come together. Loving the enthusiasm guys and amusing too. Just found you today so have subscribed and will be watching from now on. 😀
Hi Karen, that’s so kind of you to say thanks very much 💙 have a lovely day 😁
Good info guys, you have a lot of equipment to make it easier but loads of hard work too.
Cheers Brian, your so right I’m lucky enough to have a lot of the gear which makes things so much easier, got so much respect for people who do driveway builds with just the basics 👍
We done this a few years ago with a ex sinsburys sprinter van. For me the worst part was cutting the roof windows into the box.good luck with the build.
Sounds brilliant, we’ve got that job to do soon so fingers crossed it goes ok! Thank you 💙
Even if you don't happy, also never bother the happiness of others, this is the principle.
Great project guys! Great content. You two are brilliant!
Cheers mate 👍
Great Fun. Keep it up 🙂
That’s lovely of you to say thanks very much 😁
First time watching you both and subscribed immediately. Great content with relaxed and easy presentation. Cheers.
What a thing to say 💙 thanks ever so much 😁
Cracking Start on the new Winter Van Project. Having spent time under my 21 year old Sprinter Based Motorhome de rusting it over a week, it would have been really nice to be able to have full access to the top of the chassis rail and cross members as they are almost impossible to get to with the body in place. I was impressed with how well the underseal went on and I think that will be my next step if the Wife wants to keep the Motorhome after it's last adventure on the back of a tow truck. As it has had one too many breakdowns for her to be confident in it. It is still stuck in our layby waiting of our Local Mechanic to come out and run his diagnostic tool on the gearbox to see what the problem is.
Oh dear not good news mate, I was wondering how u we’re getting on the other day, 🤞it’s a cheap simple fix
@@truebluetravellers probably not cheap. It could be the control module or the electric pump that operates the selector for the manual box. Hopefully it is whatever is cheaper to replace. It is a great system till the van goes into limp mode or becomes a very heavy caravan without a hitch and the added bonus of an engine as steerage.
That could be an option fitting caravan movers to it so I can at least get it back in to my drive.
love this, and a great idea, will follow and it's got me seriously contemplating the same sort of build
Thanks very much, oh that’s great, they definitely offer something different to a panel van, we are really interested to see how it turns out and what it’s like to use 😁
Love this build already :-)
Cheers mate 👍
awesome build
Thanks very much Tomas 😁
Wow keep them going nice
Thanks very much Shaun 👍
How hilarious are you two!? Great stuff. Looking forward to more.
Cheers mate 👍
Hi guys love the video you both are doing a lovely job have a lovely week 😊😊😊
Thanks very much and same to you too 😊
inspiring ! cant wait to see how this goes
Cheers Tim 👍
Hopefully your new retractable steps don't freeze up when in the nordic winter, when trying to deploy them. Great build just watched you guys for the first time. Yes I've subscribed
🤞🤞they still work, at least we can get in and out the van if that happens 😂 thanks very much 💙
Just loving watching you guys, you're a great double act. 😂😂
Thanks Phil 😁 much appreciated
Looks great so far , nice workman/womanship , entertainment factor 10/10 .
Thanks Colin 😁
Great work so far and you make it look so easy! I just know I'd mess the walk through up 😂
Oh that’s really nice of you to say thank you, there’s a fair bit of staring at the van and head scratching I promise… but that would be a pretty dull video 😂
Enjoying your build. Best of luck.
Cheers David 👍
You made such progress in a single video, subscribed and cant wait to see how it turns out!
Thanks very much, we really appreciate it 😁💙
Genius van choice!
Cheers mate 👍
As an ex-Sainsburys driver and now camper I'm very excited to see what you do with this build, have just subscribed!!
Thanks very much guys 😁
Fantastic and very informative.. and subscribed 😎
Top man, cheers mate 👍
Duuuude!
You are gifted man! Thanks for sharing one more awesome video. Your cuts are sick! Your sense of design is great as well. Well done, thanks for uploading!
Wishing you good luck on the next projects from Sweden 🇸🇪!
Thanks very much Paul much appreciated 👍👍
Love this guys brilliant this is gonna look nuts when you finished your cracking on with this 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Jeff, we are stoked with how it’s coming along 😃
The capping on your door/window holes would be better made of polyurethane or other plastic. Aluminium will let all the cold in as it allows the heat to bypass your insulation.
Love the build, really good idea to use a supermarket van!
Cheers mate, yeah so a few people have said the same so I’ve done some research and from what I’ve found I think the best thing I can do is cap the aluminium on the inside to act as a barrier/insulator, job to do before we set off 👍
Another one here that came for the Defender and stayed for the guns 😂 Love the quality of your work. You really could do this professionally.
Get in 💪😂💙! Haha thanks very much, that’s really kind of you, not sure about being pro builders but Jon’s definitely a pro at being a pain in the a** 😂
"The windscreen was cracked, but it passed the MOT for 3 years because I just snipped the end of the wiper blade off"... It took a few seconds for that one to sink in, but that was funny.......
😂😂😂😂😂👍
Legends. Love this channel!
Cheer mate, that’s means a lot to us 💙
Looks like it's going to be an awesome build! Just one thing though, most car body fillers are not waterproof, they actually soak up water and will crack if not protected asap with paint.
We’ll never knew that, thanks for the info , much appreciated 👍
Only discovered your channel this week, love the content (you two are hilarious) and subscribed. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this build, so different from the 100's of others i've seen before.
It's a great RUclips channel, always interesting, fun and there really nice. Cheer's from Milwaukee
Thanks ever so much and so great to hear that it gives you a laugh 😂💙 thanks very much, we’d not seen one done before we got it but since buying it a couple of people have contacted us about similar things they have done. We’re interested…and a bit nervous truth be told, to see if it will handle the cold the way we hope it will.
@Mark.G475 thanks Mark 😍💙🥰
Hello jess and jon iv just come across your new van build and subscribed straight off .. great start to your build n clever choice on the ex sainsbury van .. looking forward to yer progress n with the laffs throwin in they go too quick .. best of luck to ye ☘️☘️
Thanks very much Neil, much appreciated 👍
A perfect van to start a build camper guys
Thanks very much Philip 😁👍
Great video, we loved this at Vanlove HQ ❤ Bring the van to our festival in July next year!! 🚐
Thanks very much 💙 not sure where we will be in July 😂😂 but would be fun to come if we are in the UK 😃
Fantastic job looking forward to seeing the progress. Not telling you how to suck eggs but I’ve just converted a 4.2 tonne delivery truck living in Spain. Make sure any internal metal or aluminum frames have a good vapor barrier or covered with fabric as they condensate badly in the cold. Great video.
Thanks very much and not at all I appreciate the advice, yeah unfortunately I had to get the aluminium frame as I couldn’t get any plastic trim in that size but hoping the door seals do a good job 👍
Ths is thone I've been waiting for. They sell these near me for a stupidly low price. You say they are good for the Arctic but equally good for hot countries too 👍
Thanks 😃 they are so much cheaper than panel vans aren’t they and yes like you say the insulation would work great both ways.
This just popped up on my recommendations and as a sainsburys driver i was intrigued. I wouldnt be too quick dismiss what other sainsburys drvers have told you, these vans do have a bit of a hard life engine wise, .. we do tend to rag them a bit lol!! best of luck with your build though , you have a new follower! bring on part 2 cant wait!
Cheers mate, I like to think you boys have given them a good test run for me 😂👍
Another awesome build video . Looking forward to seeing your artic 🥶van build before and after set of videos . The landy build was a blast to watch . Normally I don’t watch build videos or van life travel very much other then land Rover ones . But you two have a great way of making them enjoyable . PLUSS looking forward to seeing your travel memories videos that we will get to see . Thanks again for sharing your wonderful videos with us all your over landing friends . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A. :) :) ☃️🗻🍻👍🏼😁
Thanks Steve, me and Jess were saying yesterday it’s a shame we are not off in the Landy on a big adventure but can’t wait for it anyway, thanks for following along tho Steve 👍😁
@@truebluetravellers …😁👍🏼👊🏼
Your going to have a fantastic camper
Thanks Robert, fingers crossed she does us proud 🤞
That’s a great looking wheelbarrow!
😂😂🤦♀️🤦♀️ Dear god!! Don’t encourage him 😂😂😂😂
Was recommend your video and am happy and subscribed!!
Thanks mate 👍
Love the channel guys and also the JH workwear…..😉
😂😂 cheers mate 👍
Y'see, I'm a fan of these sprinters. The one I drive wouldn't be any good due to being side loading, but this and the OCADO / MORRISONS style ones would be perfect like you're doing. Awesome.
I see a Waitrose one the other day with a side loading door, looked ideal 👍
class! I am going to follow how you get on with this! Also a nod to another defender owner too!
Cheers mate 👍 thanks we appreciate it! 🤞 She works out the way we hope! We’re loving the defender crew coming along for the ride 💪 so far all the defender owners we’ve met have been legends!
Amazing love it
Thanks John 👍
Looks like you guys have more fun building these than actually using them. I am good with that, cause I love build vlogs.
😂😂😂 your right there Erik 👍💪
After cutting through sheet metal, twisting forces will accumulated on the corners and they will be released by cracking along the 90º corner. You should always round the corners on any sheet metal panel cut to dissipate those forces.
👍 thanks tip mate
That Defender in the back is a pretty one as well!
Thanks, just in Spain in the defender now 👌👍 it’s a beast 😊👍
Great channel and quality content. I'm on her team, time in the toilet is "private time" lol
😂😂😂😂 thanks 😁👍
Love it 👍
what a great idea, if I didn't need to get my motor bike in the back I would of gone for something like that
Cheers mate 👍
Not lying your screen shot got me looking at your vid...
Oh that’s cool, thanks 😀 have a lovely day
Wow you two don’t mess about.
Cheers Colin 👍
Well done! Subbed.
Cheers mate 👍
i am looking forward to your build journey
Cheers roddy 👍
Cold bridging with alloy door frame can be a problem when very cold .
Condensation on inside door frame, can freeze up to alloy .
Hi Harvey, you make a great point here, we really wanted plastic trims (like the ones we’ve put on the rear door and crawl through but we just couldn’t find them. Luckily the ali will only be in the gas locker and on our side door which won’t be in any cupboards or anything so shouldn’t cause too many problems 🤞
By cutting the hole in the back of the cab and through the strengthening box sections you have compromised the strength/safety of the cab shell. Hopefully, you will put some bracing/structure back in to compensate? As it stands the cab is effectively a box with no ends, it's not going to be great in a rollover/hit from the side...
Yeah got a frame put in so she’s all sweet now 👍
Cant believe the step and fridge weigh over 2 tons. Nice saving and hopefully a few quid in scrap
Oh sorry not sure I explained that well, the van weighed 2060kg once we removed the step and a/c unit, I think they weighed about 300kgs, but we did sell them on second hand so a few extra pennies to put towards the build 😁
Nice project, good luck with it.
I wanted to do a Luton Loloader/Maximover, but they are much wider than a panel van and wouldn't fit on my driveway so had to settle for a panel van. :(
These are great for conversions though because the back is square and framing it is straightforward. And as you showed, if you get one with a box made from GRP then they can often weigh less than a panel van. I've seen overweight ones but they had cast iron log burners and granite worktops lol.
Cheers mate, yeah we have been on with the interior build this week and the square walls and floor 👌 so easy compared to a panel van, especially the top cabinets 👍
+1 for the boundaries!
😂😂😂
Do check that your fuel tank really is big enough. Sainsburys had tried to increase payload by half filling the fuel tank with a foam section, so it could only be filled half with diesel, saved 40kgs. A custom fuel tank behind the rear wheels will increase your range, and better distribute your weight, the front axle is very close to its maximum permitted weight even when they are empty.
Cheers David, yeah someone mentioned that yesterday so I tried to check with Mercedes with the part number on the tank but they couldn’t tell me how big it was, I’ll just have to fill it up and see what size it is 👍
I used to drive those sprinters they drive okay I did find the ride smooth the auto gearbox was a bit stupid sometimes though (you put it in reverse and it goes in neutral so you have to go back to drive then reverse again) it had no guts on hills You have to slam the cab door shut and if your changing a headlight bulb it’s pain in the arse (specially the little DRL)
I don't know how often i come across channels like this and my thoughtsa re all the time the same. I want something like this too
Thanks 😁👍
Just found your channel wow is all I can say . The ex super market van makes great sense with the body . On them vans can you retrofit Air con for the warmer months just a thought . As I know the Tesco sprinter don’t have it due to weight 👍🏻
Thanks very much Vern, yeah that’s the one downside to this van, like you say doesn’t come with factory a/c but yeah Could be on the cards to retrofit it 👍
Genius! Pure Genius!
Thanks 😁👍
As a supermarket delivery driver i can agree with the other driver. These vans get seriously battered by different drivers. They spend many hours in the Mercedes garage being repaired.
Hi Matthew there’s been a few comments like this but can I ask when u say they are battered, how do you mean ? I understand they are not looked after like someone would there own can but what do the drivers do different to say a mechanic or builder or and chippy ?
Morning! :-)
Good morning 😁
