My mom doesn't understand english but she watches all your videos and she got sooo excited when she saw that you were doing alfajores. They are very popular in Peru 🇵🇪
i've made these without the coconut but i like the addition of coconut. my friend who is married to an argentinian man told me they loved them. going to make them and give them to my neighbor who is from south america. happy thanksgiving john and many happy returns of the day.
So interesting to see all the different renditions of Alfajores. My Peruvian mom rolls hers in powdered sugar. Every Christmas she has cookies spread all over her island, filing and rolling them in a long assembly line. Such amazing childhood memories, we would eat them at the pace that she made them. To me, alfajores equals Christmas.
Omg, as soon as I saw the notification I clicked so fast 😅 In Argentina, we called this "alfajores de maicena" but maicena or maizena is the brand of corn starch. Generally, they are made with only corn starch and a LOT of dulce de leche 😍
I used to live in Argentina 🇦🇷, and it’s been 20 years since I’ve had an Alfajor de maicena. I made your recipe and it was PERFECT. Soooo good!! Thanks John!!
I'm from Argentina and I suggested this recipe over a year ago, not sure if you saw it, lol! The recipe is perfect! I make them and sell them on weekends and they're so popular! I make them thicker, both the dough and the dulce de leche layer, just because here you can get different densities of dulce de leche. The one you have would be the one to spread, but there are two types more dense, made for pastries or baking. And also you can just put that dulce de leche you have in a pot stirring constantly for like 8-12 minutes and it would thicken up! Thanks for making these!!!
I feel the same!! My daughters boyfriend seen me using it the otherday then I put it at the back of the pantry. He went and grabbed it and at 2 scoops of it straight from the container!! 😳😲😬 🤦🤷 I was a bit shocked !! Lol
Hello! As an Argentinian I can say for sure you just honored one of our favourite candys! We use a dulce de leche special for bakery, wich is more stiff and allow us to put a scadalous amount in there. Thank you John!!
I’m Peruvian and thank you so much for making these! I was hoping one day you would do video. I can’t wait to try them I know they’ll come out delicious!!
I really appreciate the detail and specificity in the closed captions including sounds and prosody. Definitely helps to feel real effort and equal access to great content!
These are wildly popular in Chile! My husband is Chilean and I lived there for a bit. Dulce de leche there is called manjar, and it's in all the good desserts!
I’m very excited to see you tried Alfajores. I’m Peruvian (my parents were born there) and I was born in Argentina and I remember always making what we call “ Alfajores con Manjar Blanco ( dulce de leche) with my grandmother. I’m grateful to have learned her recipe and share the memories we had baking these delicious cookies and enjoying it with tea or milk. My grandmother passed away recently from Pulmonary Fibrosis and Covid. ❤️ Thank you for sharing this video and I always look forward to the next. 😄
I'm Brazilian and I was confused about that, the Argentinean alfajores I got in Buenos Aires were the ones that are softer and covered with chocolate, those are also easy to find here in Sao Paulo. This cookies he made we call "Casadinhos", two cornstarch cookies glued together with some sort of filling, and they are way more common here than the traditional Argentinean alfajores
Thank you, Gracias, etc. This has been my favorite cookie since I visited Patagonia and they were everywhere! But..I love them best with powder sugar and bite-size.
I’m from Bolivia and alfajores are very typical from my country too. We have lots of varieties of alfajores, but these ones are sooo good!! I’ll definitely try your recipe, every time I bake them my whole family and friends love them! Thnx a lot for all your recipes John, you rock!
I went to culinary school a couple of years ago with a woman from Chile. I remember her bringing these with her to class one day for us all to try. They were so yummy!
I’m making the dulce de leche now and watched a few videos as my daughters South American husbands family loves these, and smaller is better as they are sweet. Your recipe looks exactly what I want!
Peru is where I first had these which were made by some precious friends from the church there. These bring back some sweet, literal and emotional, memories for me. When I make them I simply sprinkle with powdered sugar as I had them there. ❤️
I’m from the Philippines 🇵🇭 and we also have this treat. We also call it Alfajores, the only difference is that the cookies are smaller and thicker in size. Like a perfect bite size.
Made these yesterday!!! I'm not able to eat them myself, but gave them away and got rave reviews! I made my own dulce de leche, and was so excited and had plenty of dulce de leche left, I'm baking more today
My husband is from Argentina and weve lived there on and off and we love these alfajores. Especially these ones are his favorites.. im going 4o surprise him with these! He will be so excited! (Luckily we find oue favorite Argentine dulce de leche in a local latin market in Philly!
I'm so glad you mentioned your aversion to cornflour...!!!! I've had this same problem for the last 51 years!!! Even with it in its bag in its box.... the feel of it when you have to open it...ughh...!!! I seriously thought I was the only one who suffered from this problem!!! Thank God I'm not bats...!!!
I worked on a project in Buenos Aires a few years ago. I came home with so many packets of alfajores. I never even thought of making them. But I can now 😀
Try mixing it with water then punch it. It goes from a liquid to a solid instantly. My daughter's when they were younger mixed it & it wouldn't splatter and did this odd liquid to solid thing. Idek
My neighbor brought me some for Christmas and I loved them so much that I was hoarding them😉 I’m going to try to make some. Thank you so much and appreciate you sharing this recipe.
OMG a peruvian style of "alfajores". I know alfajores are wide known among South America and many countries would claim they create it but in fact it belongs to all South America with its many styles of preparing it. I enjoy this video so much
I just made these cookies and they were delicious😋. I didn't have a cookie cutter so I used the small blender cover to get the Oreos round shape😀 and they came out perfect😋
This looks so good. I have seen peoplenfrom Mexico make a similar cookie, but. Made with flour. The cookie is thicker and sprinkeled with sugar before baking, filled the same way, but not rolled in anything.
Yay!! You mentioned my beautiful country Perú!!! Love alfajores and your recipe was amazing! As all of your recipes are! And of course I always enjoy your fantastic personality!!! You are just adorable!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I am from Argentina. We call them "alfajores de Maizena (it is the name of a cornstarch brand)". Thank you very much for doing this recipe. My family and I really love your channel!
I didn't catch how much vanilla to add. Thanks for the recipe! Learning how to make them for my son's wedding, he's marrying someone from Argentina and I thought it would be fun to have these delicious treats.
Originally from Al-Andalus, around XII-XIII centuries. As most words starting with “al” in Spanish, deriving from Arabic. So interesting to see how it then became such a popular traditional sweet in so many American countries! It makes me want to try all varieties, yum!! :-)
YUM!! I went to Buenos Aires when I was 17, and fell in love with these cookies there - tried to recreate when I got home, but no dice! I'm trying your recipe to see if they capture that memory from 37 years ago!! Thanks John for this jog down memory lane!! ❤️xoxo Amy

I'm from Venezuela and my grandma would make these a little thicker and bigger and they were such a special treat cause they just melt in your mouth. Loved seeing your recipe John! I haven't these in years, I'll probably have to make some of my own
Just tried the recipe and it almost worked... The dough spreads a lot once in the oven and if you're not a hardcore sweet tooth, half the sugar do pretty fine.
We also eat alfajores here in Uruguay and we looove dulce de leche! And actually for alfajores we use dulce de leche repostero, which is a bit thicker.
I had no idea you had a Mexican parent. Im from Perú and my husband Is Mexican. I love alfajores. I would love to see your mom cooking with you in one of your videos.
