  • Fun fact: The name Xochimilco is a combination of the Nahuatl words xochitl and milli and means “where the flowers grow.” Built on the site of a pre-Columbian town, Xochimilco is famous for its chinampas (floating gardens). The local agriculturalists constructed branch and reed rafts on the lake, covered them with mud from the bottom of the lake, and cultivated fruits, vegetables, and flowers, which they shipped to Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) via canal. In time the rafts took root and became islands.
Quickest way to get there: Uber. It’s approximately 20-30mins away from the city center/centro historico.
Cost per song by Mariachi: 250-300 Mexican Pesos
Cost to rent a boat: We read that it would normally cost around 600 mexican pesos per hour. But we were charged 4,000 mexican pesos for 2.50hours. We felt overcharged but we enjoyed so we didn’t care about it too much.
Food: There are boats who sell food in the canal. We tried elote/street corn, mexiote, mole, and cactus. But if you want to save, bring your own food and drinks.
