Quick correction: while lines 12, 18, 24, 25 and 28 only feature these trams, on account of their profile, they do run also on line 15 on occasion. IIRC, they do off-peak services, when serving the line with the large, modern Sorefame/Siemens-built (then turned Adtranz and finally bought by Bombardier, after which that factory was shut down) doesn’t make much sense. By the way, I know they are not as interesting as these, but are you doing a video on them, too? Also, line 24 was only recently reactivated, and there are a lot of investments being made in reopening other line sections and even laying down new track, such as parts of the connection from Cais do Sodré to Santa Apolónia.

I first visited Lisbon in 1992 when it still had a much vaster tramway network - however, many lines at least partly followed major roads without separate lanes of their own so some time in the late 1990s, Lisbon sadly axed most of the tram lines, partly compensating for this by expanding its underground network. I ride the remaining tram lines on all the rare occasions I visit Lisbon and I'd love to see some of the closed lines restored wherever they make sense!

A Trip-Tipp in and around Lisbon (but without Line 28): Tagus(Tejo)-Hopping (I did it some years ago): Start by Train Apollonia - Oriente, here change to the bus to Setubal via the Vasco da Gama Bridge. From here by Train to Lisbon via the 25 de Abril Bridge to Station Campolide, here change to train to Alcantara-Terra. From here a little walk along the freightline to Alcantare-Mar and by train to Cais do Sodré. Now by ferry over the Tagus to Cacilhas, and from here by Tramway to Pragal. From here by Bus to Costa di Caparica with wonderful beach at the Atlantic Ocean. Way back by Bus to Trafaria and enter the ferry (last ferry before the Ocean - is it possible to see the sundown on board??) to Belem. And from Belem with Tramway back to Lisbon..
These trams look fantastic! The car pulling out in front of the tram at 9:17 is an example of the "Priority" rule. At any junction where signs don't indicate otherwise, all traffic is required to give way to traffic on the right. I think this is the case in most if not all European countries which drive on the right, i.e. pretty much everywhere outside the UK, Ireland, Malta and (possibly) Cyprus??? I think they drive on the left there??? I've mostly driven in Germany, Switzerland and France, where it generally only applies in towns. It can be very unnerving for a British driver, especially when you are already having to cope with driving on the wrong side of the road. I believe that historically, and possibly to this day in some parts of Europe, traffic coming on to a roundabout had the right of way over traffic already on it. A recipe for instant gridlock in the rush hour if ever I saw one. It probably explains why roundabouts were a rarity in Continental Europe until relatively recently.
When i was little, almost every sunday, i would make my grandmother take me to the center of lisbon to ride the trams on purpose! Has a kid having the experience of riding such roads and streets with the tram windows open is a completely unbeetable experience!!
Such winding, narrow streets ! No wonder these elegant old ladies are used ! They are so nimble around those tight bends ! Single bogies and a pole pantograph ,reminds me of an elderly tram I rode on in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia ❤️
I go quite a few times a year to Lisbon, but I never rode the trams. Mostly because everytime I see them, they are PACKED with tourists. Literally sardines in a can.
This is such a cool video... the only "public transportation" tram I've ever been on is the one in Hong Kong, locally referred to there as a "teng teng" (cuz of the sound of the bell). The ticket was a flat rate of HK$1.20 (USD 15 cents or thereabouts), so yeah even if you're going 1 stop it's still HK$1.20. That was back in the mid 1990s though. Things likely will have changed since then.
Are they listed by UNESCO? They should be. And by the way, if I'm not mistken, the line F in San Francisco also operates vintage cars from all over the world, including at least one from Milan.
I loved this tram video. It reminded me of the double-deck Hong Kong trams without the hanging laundry. Yes, please. I'd really enjoy seeing the Milan trams.
Thank you for the time you spend making these videos possible. Because travel is very restricted due to the pandemic, your videos give me the ability to travel while sitting on my sofa. I hope to once again travel sometime in 2022 with a trip to the Trapani area of Sicily and visit friends. Keep up the great videos.
I can tell you, that Tram 28 was an amazing ride when I went there a couple of years ago. It was something that intrigued me during my holiday in Lisbon.
Enjoyed the vid and the info. Loved seeing the route map too. Just a suggestion, include the time of year. That sky was so blue and no tourist to speak of, I wouldn't mind planning my first trip to Portugal at that time of year.
Love these trams!! If I visited Lisbon I'd be riding the trams every day!! And buying the type ticket giving me unlimited rides. Thanks Max for sharing😀😀♥️♥️
@@NonstopEurotrip A true rail fan like me. I do stuff like that here......just hop a SEPTA commuter train Philadelphia to Trenton NJ and connect with NJTransit commuter trains Trenton to New York. Great fun. Plus I get to see friends in New York. Of course I ride the subway LIRR or Metro North commuter trains.
I was born and raised in Lisbon, now I'm 20 years old, living in london and never been in one of those "elétricos" as we say in Portugal, making me feel ashamed of myself for not riding in one of these relics before, who knows maybe next time that I go back to my beloved country I may ride in one of them😌
A beautiful video! You were well-informed to sit on the left side on Martim Moniz to enjoy the views. I think what you should have said is the fact that the section on Calçada de São Francisco is the steepest adhesion tram section in the world with the gradient of 13.8 percent. The second steepest adhesion tram route is the Pöstlingbergbahn tram in Linz, Austria with "only" 11.6 percent. 😃
I think Milans old car is mostly still original Peter Witt, ATM serie 1500, was riding them in the 70th's, they still have them because it's cheaper then replace them with buses on routes that not have many passengers.
Thanks for sharing. I understand they also have red and green trams on the same route that are hop-on hop-off tours (for an extra price). Unfortunately, this is suspended during the pandemic. Also, use caution on the tram. Pickpocketing is rampant on tram 28. You may also find the tram less crowded before 9:00 and after 6:00.
You should make a video on the Ventotto Trams! This was super cool! How do these trams not hit each other when the track overlaps, is the a signaling system?
Thank you. Yes the Milan tram ride would be excellent. We unfortunately missed the opportunity to ride these as their was an intense heatwave that autumn and we only had that night. 👍🏻🏴
Thank you, nonstop eurotrip! I'm not a fan of this kind of old trams, I like what's new, airy, later, if you know what I mean. But for a tourist train, yes, for once, like that, it works. If we had to take it every day, of course I prefer the metro (moreover, I always prefer the metro to the tram). In this kind of trip report that you did, it would have been necessary (but you do not have the right, therefore not to worry to you) to make a "cab ride" as it is called in the middle of the fanatics of train: film in the cab, next to the driver. There, it would have been great but it's forbidden, so you did well to do like that. On the other hand, special mention for the sound, it is very well taken. How did you make the sound so crisp, so deep, so airy, so clear? It's rare. Thanks to you. And it's also a shame that we don't see you in "face reveal" like the other RUclipsrs on the train do, nor that we know your first name.
Glad to see you back Louis! I do like new trams too, infact I had a great time on the Budapest trams the other day, nice and new! A cab ride would have been great but hopefully I got all the good shots, but I don't know how the sound is so good? 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe I will do a face reveal when I get to a big milestone, 50k maybe but I don't think I have the face for camera and I've seen the abuse some other RUclipsrs get! 👌😊
I'm happy to talk to you too, nonstop eurotrip! Yeah, you're right about the camera, if you don't feel like it, don't. There are still unkind people on RUclips. Otherwise, I watch train cab rides on RUclips very regularly: for example, you can type Paris to ... by TGV or rer B, or rer C etc etc ... it is the driver who films normally. I'll watch your old videos that I missed when I have time, I think tonight or tomorrow. Thank you very much to you, you delight us with your train videos !!!
It's Karnaca!!! Come off it, the tram driver was letting that car out ("hashtag" false-jeopardy). Brilliant video; looking forward to trams in Milan if you do one. Really enjoy your videos.
I think more old trams in the world could stay in normal service for a long time. Out of service / for special rides, you see that a lot. In Rotterdam, we have a lot of old trams saved, and you can ride almost any time. They don't ride in normal service, they became a tourist attraction. Very old Rotterdam trams are also on the streets when there is a lot of snow, to clean the track and wires. New trams can't do anything then... Old trams never break!
What about the old wooden train that goes from Palma Majorca up to the port of Soller? Are they still not going? Or have they been replaced? Mind that is a train and not a tram so I guess it doesn't count?
Glad I found this channel, I was directed here from a Dylan video. I find Dylan's videos much more enjoyable to watch now that he does voiceovers. I like the captions that you do but a voiceover allows me to watch videos when I take my glasses off and relax! Do you think you will ever do voiceovers?
Thank you Richard! Tbh, seeing as the majority of my audience are non native English speakers, I don't think it would work for me, unlike Dylan, who has 60-70% with English as a first language. I also prefer to allow the natural sounds come through, and it would be boring if we were all the same, right? 🙏🏻☺️

@@NonstopEurotrip No prob ! When I went in 2004, the trams were quite old, I would say Communist era - I was going to say that they are old, but that was 17 years ago, and I don't know whether they've been replaced since.
@Nonstop Eurotrip the oldest tram running in Europe it's not Milan... it's the Tranvia Blau at Barcelona en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramvia_Blau . The Tranvia de Soller in Mallorca it's also older than Milan one en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tranv%C3%ADa_de_S%C3%B3ller
No, you are wrong. Tramvia blau begun to operate in 1901, the same year that began the electrification of the Lisbon Trams that back to 1872, talking about electrification they began in Milan in 1893 and the first trams are from 1876. The tranvia de Sóller began in 1913. And today they use cars that were used in Lisbon, they have the same gauge. Even the trams from Porto began their electrification in 1895 before Lisbon. By the way, the trams from Porto use the standard gauge like the Tranvia Blau.
The car pulling out in front of the tram is nothing. You should see how the double decker buses in Japan just drive right in front of the trams there and won’t move

A Trip-Tipp in and around Lisbon (but without Line 28):
Tagus(Tejo)-Hopping (I did it some years ago):
Start by Train Apollonia - Oriente, here change to the bus to Setubal via the Vasco da Gama Bridge.
Great advice Heinrich 😁
A small quirk of the Portuguese highway code is that vehicles running on rails have the priority unless road signalling says otherwise 😉
Pretty sure the trams have priority 😅
@@NonstopEurotrip I will no argue that 😂
When i was little, almost every sunday, i would make my grandmother take me to the center of lisbon to ride the trams on purpose! Has a kid having the experience of riding such roads and streets with the tram windows open is a completely unbeetable experience!!
That sounds amazing! I love Lisbon 😁
Such winding, narrow streets !
No wonder these elegant old ladies are used !
They are so nimble around those tight bends !
Single bogies and a pole pantograph ,reminds me of an elderly tram I rode on in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia ❤️
Absolutely yes, amazing old trams 😃
I go quite a few times a year to Lisbon, but I never rode the trams. Mostly because everytime I see them, they are PACKED with tourists. Literally sardines in a can.
Love your username 😂
Great video. What cool trams.... literally with all those open windows!! Would like to see a video of the Milan trams.
Thank you 🙏🏻 I plan to film it soon 🙂
Thank you Max for sharing this AWESOME ride with us! Absolutely would ❤️ for you to do Milano trams … it will bring back wonderful memories for me 👍🏻
Thanks Rob! I plan to film the Milan trams this week 😃
I rode these last year, it was great! It's amazing how they pass so close to walls and cars in the narrower streets. Great video!
Amazing isn't it ☺️
This is such a cool video... the only "public transportation" tram I've ever been on is the one in Hong Kong, locally referred to there as a "teng teng" (cuz of the sound of the bell). The ticket was a flat rate of HK$1.20 (USD 15 cents or thereabouts), so yeah even if you're going 1 stop it's still HK$1.20. That was back in the mid 1990s though. Things likely will have changed since then.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'd love to go to HK one day 🦾😊
Yes, bring on the Milan tram video! What a fun way to see a city. Great video, thanks!
Ok for sure 😊
Are they listed by UNESCO? They should be.
And by the way, if I'm not mistken, the line F in San Francisco also operates vintage cars from all over the world, including at least one from Milan.
I'm not sure tbh 😂 I loved the SF trams when I went 10 years ago 😍
In SF they operate a vintage car from Oporto, but not one from Lisbon (I suppose due to the narrower gauge of Lisbon trams)
I would love to visit Lisbon. And other parts of Portugal. I only been to Faro on the south coast.
Definitely Lisbon and Porto worth visiting Andrew 🦾☺️
@@NonstopEurotrip Sweet :)
That was fun. I've seen a video of this ride before, but it was filmed at night, so it was nice to see the daylight version. Thanks.
Thank you ☺️
I loved this tram video. It reminded me of the double-deck Hong Kong trams without the hanging laundry. Yes, please. I'd really enjoy seeing the Milan trams.
Thank you Lynne! I plan to film it soon ☺️
então vão até Itália, os de Lisboa são portugueses...
You are more than welcome, tell all your friends 🤣👍🏻
I can tell you, that Tram 28 was an amazing ride when I went there a couple of years ago. It was something that intrigued me during my holiday in Lisbon.
Brilliant isn't it ☺️
Wow amazingly documented. Would definitely visit Lisbon for sure.
You definitely should 😃
Thank you for sharing! Brought back memories of my trip to Lisbon. I recognised a few places I visited. I enjoyed the trams too. Great experience. :-)
Glad you enjoyed it Cameron 😌
Enjoyed the vid and the info. Loved seeing the route map too. Just a suggestion, include the time of year. That sky was so blue and no tourist to speak of, I wouldn't mind planning my first trip to Portugal at that time of year.
The date of travel is in the video description ☺️
nice, reminds me a bit of the san francisco cable cars but wow what tight spaces they have to navigate
I know, crazy isn't it! 😁
Very nice and well filmed video. Amazing to see these trams crossing the narrow and steep steets.
Thank you Peter 😚
Love these trams!! If I visited Lisbon I'd be riding the trams every day!! And buying the type ticket giving me unlimited rides. Thanks Max for sharing😀😀♥️♥️
Haha that's what I did. Me and Superalbs bought the 24h tickets that includes the normal trains too 😁
@@NonstopEurotrip A true rail fan like me.
@@scottyerkes1867 Sounds excellent Scott! 🤗
@@NonstopEurotrip thank you😀😀♥️♥️
I was born and raised in Lisbon, now I'm 20 years old, living in london and never been in one of those "elétricos" as we say in Portugal, making me feel ashamed of myself for not riding in one of these relics before, who knows maybe next time that I go back to my beloved country I may ride in one of them😌
Haha you should definitely do it when you're back next. I wouldn't swap London for Lisbon 😂
Electrico 28. Best tram ride on the planet. 🇵🇹
Absolutely!
Yes, would love to see a video of Milan’s trams. I road them years ago, would be fun to relive the experience.
I plan to film it soon ☺️
Nice video! I like these trams :-) Your video took me back to 2018, when I was in Lisbon, it's a very beautiful city!
Thanks mate, stunning city! 🥰
Those trams are magical!
Absolutely 😍
A beautiful video! You were well-informed to sit on the left side on Martim Moniz to enjoy the views. I think what you should have said is the fact that the section on Calçada de São Francisco is the steepest adhesion tram section in the world with the gradient of 13.8 percent. The second steepest adhesion tram route is the Pöstlingbergbahn tram in Linz, Austria with "only" 11.6 percent. 😃
Haha crazy trams 🇵🇹🚋
I think Milans old car is mostly still original Peter Witt, ATM serie 1500, was riding them in the 70th's, they still have them because it's cheaper then replace them with buses on routes that not have many passengers.
Exactly yes, I went on them a few days ago! 🚋
Yeah I would have done one of the tourist ones but this was just as good 😁
You should make a video on the Ventotto Trams! This was super cool! How do these trams not hit each other when the track overlaps, is the a signaling system?
I plan to do Milan 😁 I genuinely don't know how that corner is controlled, maybe a big mirror 😂
Great report, I love it🚊thanks for sharing. I visit Lisboa next week again, gonna take de 28E as well
Excellent, have fun! 👍🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip obrigado👍👍
Would love to see a video of the Milan Trams! This video was great. I loved every bit of it!
I plan to film it soon ☺️
Thank you. Yes the Milan tram ride would be excellent. We unfortunately missed the opportunity to ride these as their was an intense heatwave that autumn and we only had that night.
👍🏻🏴
Ah sad, you'll have to go back 😊 I've already filmed the Milan trams the other day 👍🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip 👍🏻. I shall look forward to watching that!.
I like watching cab rides too, from trains all over the world! I hope you enjoy the videos you missed Louis ☺️👍🏻
What an amazing video!! Also congrats for 19k subscribers!!
Thank you Alex!! 🙏🏻😃
It's Karnaca!!! Come off it, the tram driver was letting that car out ("hashtag" false-jeopardy). Brilliant video; looking forward to trams in Milan if you do one. Really enjoy your videos.
Letting him out by ringing the bell? 🤷🏻♂️
If you came to Portugal again, I would recommend you to ride on Cais do Sodré to Cascais suburban line. It have really great window views
I have done this! And the Sintra line 👍🏻
Somebody IDKW has managed to get ta video from beside the driver which is quite scary in places as the tram manages to slip in through narrow spaces.
Wow, have you got a link? 🙏🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip just put it in the search box
I made a ride on one of these on line 15E from Cais do Sodre to Belem on 2019
More conventional modern tram took me back
Excellent ☺️
50 kmh... yeah.. for sure... should see them on the riverside line...
Nice journey these trams are quite unique given that they are old for their even though are in good condition.
They sure are 🙂
I think more old trams in the world could stay in normal service for a long time.
Very cool ride, yes "we" would like to see Milan's '20s Tram too, please. 🚋👍
Filming soon 🙂
They look similar to those in Milan
Much smaller 🙂
What about the old wooden train that goes from Palma Majorca up to the port of Soller? Are they still not going? Or have they been replaced? Mind that is a train and not a tram so I guess it doesn't count?
I was going for trams in regular service 👍🏻
My impression when i first rode the tram: "oh, now we get stuck!"😅🤣
Ikr 🤣
Glad I found this channel, I was directed here from a Dylan video. I find Dylan's videos much more enjoyable to watch now that he does voiceovers. I like the captions that you do but a voiceover allows me to watch videos when I take my glasses off and relax! Do you think you will ever do voiceovers?
Thank you Richard! Tbh, seeing as the majority of my audience are non native English speakers, I don't think it would work for me, unlike Dylan, who has 60-70% with English as a first language. I also prefer to allow the natural sounds come through, and it would be boring if we were all the same, right? 🙏🏻☺️
Amazing video!
Thank you 🙏🏻
great video, love trams
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great vídeo. Very cool.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great video! The tram's engine and so, are not that old, it was renewed by 1990's if i'm not mistaken. Anyway, it's an amazing classic 😍 Thanks for posting
Thanks for the info!
@@NonstopEurotrip No prob ! BTW, I've just checked and , actually, the trams in regular service have engine and components renewd by 1995/1996 ( Skoda engine ) but there are a few ones , up to 87 years old, that have the original engine, brakes and so. But these ones only go to the service for special events /services, and also when there is some lack of" renewed ones " stock due to maintenance.

@@NonstopEurotrip Atta boy!
What time was this ride? I asked this question because everyone knows this route is crowded all the time, and it was comfortably empty!
It was early afternoon 🤷🏻♂️

During two Holigays I spent a lot of the time in all trams.
(And Busses and trains and ships/ferrys)

Have you ever been on the trams in Prague? I remember there being a very sharp hairpin bend near the castle. When I went in 2004, the trams were quite old, I would say Communist era - I was going to say that they are old, but that was 17 years ago, and I don't know whether they've been replaced since.
Yes, I've been on the Prague ones lots! They are retro, but they got nothing on Ukraine 😅
@@NonstopEurotrip I might possibly get to Ukraine sometime, but it's not top of my list of priorities at the moment.
@@simonc7947 It wasn't top of mine either, I got persuaded 🤣
@Nonstop Eurotrip the oldest tram running in Europe it's not Milan... it's the Tranvia Blau at Barcelona en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tramvia_Blau . The Tranvia de Soller in Mallorca it's also older than Milan one en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tranv%C3%ADa_de_S%C3%B3ller
Regular service trams 😉
No, you are wrong. Tramvia blau begun to operate in 1901, the same year that began the electrification of the Lisbon Trams that back to 1872, talking about electrification they began in Milan in 1893 and the first trams are from 1876. The tranvia de Sóller began in 1913. And today they use cars that were used in Lisbon, they have the same gauge. Even the trams from Porto began their electrification in 1895 before Lisbon. By the way, the trams from Porto use the standard gauge like the Tranvia Blau.
Yes for MilanS tram .
Yes 🥰

The car pulling out in front of the tram is nothing. You should see how the double decker buses in Japan just drive right in front of the trams there and won’t move

Yes, I did enjoy watching this video. What I didn't enjoy was messages popping up every two minutes exhorting us to subscribe! Yes, I do understand RUclips channels needing subscribers, but this is just too much!
Sorry Paul, I think there were only 3 in the video but more subs equals bigger and better videos 🙏🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip Yes, I understand that. However, being bombarded with messages to subscribe does not make for a better video! Perhaps a message at the beginning of the video then one at the end will be enough. Messages throughout the video is just distracting and will eventually make viewers stop watching (me, at least).
