      Sharks are actually elasmobranch fish and thus would be considered for pier records. Mentioned a greenland shark and manta ray and I will mention one more. A Nor-california guy used gear to do a Catch and release on a White shark that was easily 15 ft if not bigger. Its against the law to do this so names cant be mentioned.

    • @jimbo4612
      @jimbo4612 4 года назад

      @HB 77 plesiosaurus (nessy type creatures would be in he 1000 lb range, but phylum chordata thus not a fish. 2..) megalodon (carcharocles megalodon) are also listed under a category of White sharks which to my knowledge would be federally protected in the USA and white shark are well protected world wide so you would likely get a monster fine for messing with the monster shark. photos, the latest off False bay Cape town south Africa on a research trip reveals that megs may actually still be around or a close relative species not documented still exists. Might be worth taking the fines on both for the possible rewards getting an ID on both.

    • @jimbo4612
      @jimbo4612 4 года назад

      Forgot also a Plesiosaurus would not feed on mackerel feathers given its potential diet but some kind of large Sea run Brown trout type lure with a Mustad 27/0 circle hook on a chain might get the job done. This is what we use for White shark catch and release off Guadalupe Island / baja mexico and its worked on sharks over 2 tons so I know they hold up to the job.

    • @jimbo4612
      @jimbo4612 4 года назад

      @HB 77 Lair hum? just said a plesiosarus would not be a fish and a megalodon would be a big fine. you also said fished with Mackerel feathers then commented mackerel don't have feathers? lost me there? A mackerel jig is made up with 3-6 feathered hooks or plastic material . yarn and or Mylar. I got a nice house but damn if your bedroom door can handle megs and a nessy you got a crib to be proud of for sure

      They are protected. In the seventies they were over hunted. They are a slow growing fish so if there is a season and needs to be heavily regulated. They have since made a great comeback and are pretty much everywhere around here, but we are still not allowed to keep them.

    • @jdgoodwin325
      @jdgoodwin325 5 лет назад +13

      @Chris Clark Using a 'cuda (barracuda) as bait for a big snook is something that nobody does, because it would be like using a dead turtle to catch a flounder. However, a goliath grouper would snap up a cuda with no hesitation. My post was meant to state that these guys intentionally and illegally targeted goliath grouper.

    • @jdgoodwin325
      @jdgoodwin325 5 лет назад +3

      @Chris Clark Every state I've fished has regulations regarding the use of bait. In some places in the Sierra Nevada only artificial lures are permitted. That is one of many examples. I'm not qualified to comment on the methods of wildlife law enforcement, however.

    Great job son. Nice fish even nicer to see how much concern you have for the beast. He is big,BUT I was diving in the gulf with a group of firefighters in 130 feet on a wreck called the Mexican pride, I think but what was was interesting is that when I dropped over the side of the boat to the sandy bottom I saw no t one but three Goliath that literally the size of a small car. They were so big that I thought one of them might try to eat me and got the hell out of there. That one of yours was a nice one, especially since you caught him from land! Way cool, what would be the age for a grouper of that size? 50 years, more maybe 75 years old, does anybody know or have an accurate guess, (guesstimate lol).

    Absolutely bonkers video!! Love your off-the-cuff short videos. That was a terrific watch. I only had about 15 seconds to doubt if you'd actually hook something like that. YOU DA MAN! First rate work on releasing that monster!
