  • This one is a long one so I've added some skippy links. After finishing up all the tanking updates and considering we are mid expansion, it was time to look at tanking overall and compare the classes.

The gap between a good player and a bad player should be huge not smaller and smaller thats blozzards problem now is that new players can virtually come in and be on par for the most part with good players...if your bad it needs to show and vice versa ...thats not balance thats either learn the game or get the fuck off and cry about it

Having all tanks lvled imo for raiding enjoyment DK>Warrior>Monk>Druid>Pally
Bit partial to wars as I tanked in bc on one, hated dk tanking in wotlk loved pally tanking in wrath, skipped cata, was a lock in vanilla and first half of bc, druids are still boring as hell, and monks while definitely better in a solo situation than wars are simply more repetitive and restrictive as a mt, trash damage is nice.
    For ease of play:
    Druid>Monk>DK/Pally>Warrior>Shaman (don't ask)
    mm yep, gl hf

They're this two sides of the same coin thing, light and dark.... theyre just amazing together

Bleh. I wanted to hear you compare the tank classes, not ramble on about your theories on game balance.
Listen. If bad tanks could fail by ignoring their active mitigation, that would mean that the healers' input wouldn't matter. Currently, the tank and healers work together to keep the tank alive. That's good game play because it's cooperative, where each person involved has influence on how it turns out. A bad tank can make it harder, more stressful on the healer, but in the end can still be carried by his team.
This isn't good players vs. bad players. It's a design choice between making the game cooperative, instead of self oriented. Seeing as how this is an MMO, and people usually play those to hang out with others, it would make sense that Blizzard chose the design route that offered both players involved with the task of keeping the tank alive the tools to do so. A bad tank can make it through content yes, but only if he has a great healer there to pick up the slack. And you want to take that away? Why?
Shouldn't great healers be able to carry their teammates, just as a great tank can carry a bad group?

I think there needs to be more variety in tanking. The stats should go with how you want to tank. Why can't I tank with two one handers and use parry more. Maybe I want to use a spec with a shield. Maybe I want to play a spec with dodge. Thats the issue is people say this is how its done and its the only way where is the fun in that...frost tanking was the best!

since MoP came out, i find that DK is the best for soloing. good DPS and great survivability. Pally has good suvivabilty but the DPS is the worst out of all tanks. Its main damage is from the throwing shield. take too long to solo a boss.

    • @azraelsgrave
      @azraelsgrave 10 лет назад

Doing things solo as a tank pretty much means they all will do fairly well. I play every heal/tank in the game. And have never concerned or worried over any solo content with any one tank. I know you did not mention this. However, DK's in raids are annoying to heal. They take some pretty hard hits compared to other tanks. Not always fun to heal them. One the best tanks in the game is still truly the Paladin.

    • @IcechickenSr

***** this is true in some cases, Bdk's have weak spots. But likely you experience this because I have rarely met a fellow blood dk that knows what the fuck to do with his/her runes, they hit whatever lights up and this is the result you get as described. less of them understand how and why the blood shield works, how, when to hold a DS, like Mike says in the video, to be great at them requires a higher skill curve and more planning 2 steps ahead on the fly. On your next trip through lfr for eg, tell me how many times you see one even use an AMS on Corrosive blast, or whirling corruption,. free rp, no or little damage. failure to do this means you have a poor DK, or a lazy one, and likely indicates they will not play the rest of it very well either.

    • @NaliaaS
      @NaliaaS 10 лет назад

***** You are correct if you are talking about suvivability. If you are talking in means where they have a way to defend themselves (which makes a tank better if they can) then Blood and Monk would be on the top like he said. I play a Ret pally as a main and if you want to do damage as a pally, dot that instead.

i think paladins might be the worst for entertaining game play but not the worst for tanking. they have nice damage reductions and reasonably good cds that allow you to multitask your tanking (eg hand of sacrifice and hand of protection) yeah i suppose as a tank its your job to take the damage but sometimes a damage reduction on a healer is more useful than yourself :P

I personally find Prot Warriors to be the most boring tanking spec, the playstyle has been dumbed down to be more brainless than a Prot Pally with the launch of Mists.
Build rage... Shield Block... build rage... Shield Barrier... /wrists.
At least Paladins have more buttons to push >.

      *****
      + godsaw1
      You're both idiots?
      My opener on the pally:
(taunt if necessary) Judgement > Avenger's shield > Crusader Strike > Holy Wrath > Judge > Crusader Strike > consecrate
Add to this Eternal Flame for maximum uptime, and shield of the righteous and you have a BASIC rotation of 7, or 6 if you remove Eternal Flame.
Name another tank with so many button presses in their CORE rotation.
Fights last upwards of 6 minutes, and comparing my damage to my druid tanking partner is downright upsetting :P (I mostly allow him to whore vengeance because it helps raid dps a great deal more)
This used to be better with 969 as it was slower paced, I could focus on the fight and allow my hands to take care of my rotation. Now I need to watch my rotation or I am screwing over my raid with poor damage.
Back in tougher times (vanilla and TBC) I played prot warrior and prot pally.
On the warrior I had to stance dance and it is widely regarded as WAY tougher tanking.
The usage of abilities was still easier.
I had to dance for specific reasons (Thunder clap, intercept etc) but it was basically sunder (later devastate) revenge (procs), shield slam, and cleave/HS. Not exactly "difficult" in terms of rotation, and yet MASSIVELY superior gameplay for tanks, as it left tonnes of room for strategy and eeking out an edge.
Basically, on a prot pally now, I have to press buttons because it is their turn in the rotation. I have to watch my rotation.
Back in the day I had to press extra keys in reaction to something happening IN THE FIGHT.

i enjoy the fact of self healing now. being a monk healer for 5.0 and warrior tank for 5.1, I honestly think that blizz is trying to make it so that healers have something to do during low damage phases in boss fights. for example during the feng the accursed fight there are large spikes in damage during the epicenters, draw flames, and arcane velocity abilities. other than that the damage is not quite that bad, and being able to heal while dpsing is a new and fun thing for healers.

I'm pretty sure self healing for tanks is mostly meant for PvP and not PvE, because in raids in such you have a healer and that is there primary job, whereas in PvP unless you have a pocket healer you have no way to keep your self alive in situations where you're at a dis-advantage. Such as being the FC in WG with no healer or other players around. So as a mostly PvE player you should just not talk about as it's really not meant for you.

Id be very surprised not to see something meant to be tanked by locks in the final raid tier, e.g. Leotheras, illidan etc. The possibility was brought back for a reason. Another possibility is that 10 mans may not have a lock and the encounter idea scrapped without removing the lock tanking skill.

For adds, the roll + charge combo is amazing, AoE inturrupts, guard + healing orbs + self heals are amazing, and they've got amazing utility. I even remember earlier dungeons and current heroics, where I had a macro that let me roll away from the mobs (less damage and aoe slow) and /dance because I wasn't taking any damage.

I'd be inclined to believe they WERE going to design a Warlock tankable fight - but when the lead Warlock designer got canned, it was pushed aside and eventually scrapped. They delayed the Green Fire quest almost immediately after they fired him, and it seemed all the other things they were supposedly working on slowed down too.
My guess is without him pushing and pulling for things, Blizzard focused elsewhere, and they simply haven't removed the glyph, and may not do so.

I could agree with the guardian lacking an "identity" the previous identity it had was taken away in MoP, and nothing was given to replace that gap. Previously feral druids felt, feral, you were an animal, shifting in and out as need be, unless you were a dedicated mt. Guardians need a slight revamp to make them feel more like "bears" now. They need to have more passive mitigation/healing like savage defense (a bunch of small buffs being kept up) and more dps buttons.

I have to say dk was the easiest of ALL of them to hold aggro as well as very very good self heals. I would say better than a pally to be honest. My dk is 88 and it's very smooth. I love it and see why our main tank loves his.

Well the other thing to consider, is that Agi-tanking in general with a Shaman, means planning very specifically what abilities you will use, (because you cannot use an entire action bar and be affective;) plus Shaman do have Mitigation, but it is something you have to glyph for: Spirit wolves-use spirit hunt=heals; lighting shield+glyph of shields=mitigation; and stone bulwark totem+glyph=mitigation. the problem I am finding is that their best tanking tools are nerfed by global cooldowns.

I agree so much on self-healing. There's another factor that applies only to Paladins though. In 5.3, Eternal Glory is still very powerful and acts as an HOT, which does mean it will almost always be at least a little useful as it lasts quite some time. More importantly though, you can heal your teammates! It's an instant cast, so it doesn't take much sacrifice on your part. It lets you help off-heal or even keep your own healer healed. It /can/ make a difference. Sadly, it's getting nerfed.

I'm a bit old-school too! Many of the passives they've included on the tanking plate don't make sense. Vengence for example. The tank's job, like you said, is to reduce damage. This buff should reduce the incomming damage vice raising your damage. This buff should be on a fury warrior: It fits the theme of BEING the Hulk. Take damage, get pissed, bash moar face with the attack power buff.

mmm no, I think it's a simple active mitigation(AM) solution. They wanted each tank to have 2 choices for AM, not everyone can have say, 1 physical, 1 magical, so self healing is a way of keeping them different. I personally think it's a lazy solution

I came back to WoW a month ago and decided to level a Monk 2 weeks ago (already level 85). I leveled 10-80 as Brewmaster and I am loving the active mitigation gameplay (I've leveled a Druid, DK, Paladin, and Warrior the same way). When I didn't use Guard, Chi Wave, Blackout Kick, or Expel Harm, my healer would have to work harder, but when I did use the abilities, I was basically soloing (I was able to solo Culling of Stratholme).
I always went DPS in the past because tanking got boring for me around late game when I just had to let the healer keep me up. Now I might start tanking because I actually feel like I'm doing something.

I think he meant he is so good, and I'ts so easy to master that at the end of the day,you don't even see the difference in tanking 25 mans and 10 mans.In my opinion this guy is very well informed and also I don't mean to hate on you either, but abut 753 people disagree with your opinion and the three other guys who liked your comment....

This was a good video. Addressed a lot of issues with tanking and where each class shines and falls short. However with the 5.4 patch that just came out, guardian druids now reign supreme. You go into the guardian spec and your health is increased immensely, as well as your dodge and threat generation. I just did Firelands with a guardian druid who was geared for feral. He had no aggro problems, never tanked guardian in his life, and was completely without problem all the way through.

Selfhealing numbers are also skewed. Shields are counted towards healing done in the end of the day... The line between those two is very thin after all.

the fact that tanks can now heal themselves during these phases allows healers to keep there dps rotation optimized and prepare for the hard damage phase that's coming up properly.

I would say that a "great" tank has very little to do with active mitigation and a lot more to do with positioning, timing etc. The tank is more often than not the most pivotal player in a raid, but not because they mitigate damage..

  • @MazariPL
    @MazariPL 11 лет назад

Indeed. Key to playing DK is efficient and smart use of Death Strike and cooldowns. DKs are the most "manually" tanking class out of class classes due to having tools to do so but the least passive mitigation.
Bad DK will spam DS on cd or with low blood shield. Good one will time it for spike damage or in a way to benefit the most from 5 sec dmg window for biggest blood shields.

    Dear Preach,
I feel you on the "tanks should not be self healing". The tank is a shield to take the hits, not take a hit and self heal.We have healer roles for this. Seems like something Blizz did because people bitch and cry because they are fucking trash and don't want to learn how to play the fucking game and want to sit there and press one over and over and get rewards they don't fucking deserve.

There's a reason behind that 10 man raids have a general setting if you can handle one 10 man you can pretty much do all of them assuming you gear up over time ofc. 25 man raids are usually unique to the raid and therefore need ALOT more detail to cover. Some tanks are great for one 25man but not another.

  • @PikoSimonek123

Well, DPSs role is to top DMG meters and tanks' role is to top threat meters, while healers' role is to keep people alive, and meters don't matter at all if everyone is alive, because it means that you are doing your job well- just like tanks topping threat and DPS doing as much damage as possible. Also, the self-healing is the main attribute of some tanks- the other 80% people on 10m/ 92% on 25m still need healers to do their job well in order to survive all that raid-wide damage in MoP raids.

Monks have a low margain for error. But if played perfectly they can mitigate more damage than any other tank played perfectly. This view comes from a holy paladin that healed a protection paladin, brewmaster monk, and a blood death knight during mists of pandaria.

ok just one thing, paladins don't have 1 atk that is used quite frequently that heals you for over 80k and gives you a 200k physical dmg absorption shield.

On my Prot Paladin, the only time I find myself needed to use Word of Glory is when I am soloing (because I just am stubborn and won't make a Ret set for dailies) and find I need the extra heal after a large pull. And that is still really rare.
You're right. We're kind boring. But man are we solid.

  • @EsailiaLightheart

What most people cannot fathom about monk tanks is...you need to MOVE to be a good monk tank. other tank classes don't need to move to get extra heals. Monks get the little healing orbs spawning to either side of them. Their abilities also reward you for moving about. How do you avoid damage as healer/dps? Move. Monks don't carry shields, they get spawned heals the move into....oh! let's make avoidance REAL. a monk tank that doesn't move is like a DK tank without a two hander.

I'm having a druid fully equipped with LFR gear and have to tell, he's fun to tank with. With this druid I can masspull half an instance without any problem, for as long the group stays out of AOE. In essence, when you know how to play a druid, you're into a lot of fun depending your playing style...

The question was "what is the best tank in MOP?", not "in MOP 10 man/25man?"
Anyway, no comment wars are wanted, as Mike stated this is opinion, the whole video, even to the point where he won't rank the calsses as the variables are too big. I don't care if in a 5,10 or 25 (or 40 ^^) as long as I'm tanking. YES, tanking in different sizes changes your role...no shit, I think everyone knows that. There isn't a one size fits all or we would all play it..unless you play druid, who can do anything.

I love active mitigation. I understand tanking before MoP was more about keeping threat, and now threat is mostly just granted to you, while mitigation is the more manual part.
DPS work to increase their damage, Healers work to keep everyone alive, Tanks should work to soak and survive.
I thought Will of the Emperor was a really fun fight, because the active mitigation went beyond just your class abilities, into dancing around the boss's AoE abilities.

  • @Dryarae

As a healer in a semi-hardcore raiding group, I disagree with some of what he says about tank effectiveness. Particularly for warriors and druids, effectiveness is extremely different based on the type of damage being taken. Monks, Death Knights and paladins are all far and away ahead of the other two on magic-damage fights whereas all tanks are pretty much in-line when it comes to a more physical-damage-heavy encounter where dodges and blocks make a bigger difference.
While warriors and druids are given tools to help them deal with magic damage, they just don't -seem- like they're given enough. I will always prefer to heal tanks that can reliably mitigate a wide variety of damage over those that can't.

Why would a hybrid be dead? Without hybrids you can't have a Rdps, Tank, Mdps, or heals all wrapped up into one. Druids are by far the funnest class I've played because of the versatility. Not to mention, they make farming very very easy.

  • @TheDancerMacabre

Vampiric Blood increases healing from all sources, Anti Magic Shell reduces magic damage, Dancing Rune Weapon increases Parry, Iceborn Fortitude decreases all damage taken.
I stopped playing WoW for about 6 months and started back up again, and jumped on my DK, and man, I was just reminded me how smooth, intuitive, versatile it was. I never felt like "Man I wish I had 'such and such." or felt like if another class could do it better (Like my Destro Lock and Shaman)
Give it a try if you haven't.

He isn't saying that. What he's saying is "they don't have tank gear" He's not saying they have bad gear, he's saying they have the wrong gear.
