I look forward to one day sailing over that bridge. I’ve driven it to Virginia Beach so many times but never been on the water. Thank you for being an inspiration to even a 50 year old who is about to retire and addicted to your binge watch, planning my voyage in the next few years.
You sailed over the tunnel you went through to begin your Sailing Uma adventure. What a great opportunity to take in the awesome accomplishments you both have achieved.
I'm actually getting excited about all your boat maintenance and updates ... I wonder if that's, because I will be watching you two do it and not doing myself? 🤔
Hi guys, thanks for the great videos. As much as I like watching your adventures in paradise, what I really enjoyed the most was seeing you turn an old boat into a great cruising sailboat, Uma is beautiful, you made her beautiful. I am looking forward to seeing the upgrades.
Kika and Dan - I just finished binge watching all of your steps over the last 4 weeks starting from step 1 through several seasons and completing all of them today. I did cheat a bit and watch all of season 8 before I completed my binge watching and now I find myself rewatching a few of my favorite season 8 steps. I must say the quality of your videos from day was pretty darn good and now it has reached truely amazing. What a fantastic journey and so very much look forward to watching many more steps! Thanks again and Cheers!
Agreed! Kika’s editing keeps getting better from where it was already great. I am finally only one year behind and catching up. Here in NH you have already passed by.
You made it! Thank you for bringing us along on the trip north. You have definitely put all of your resources into giving us great videos to watch. Thank you both so much and hope all of your projects go well so you can get on the way to the North Atlantic journey. Take care and have a good weekend.
I have sailed up and down the coast from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean. I'll never understand why someone would willingly sail in a cold climate. I love your sense of adventure and excitement about it though!
just learning to sail, but I am an experience touring kayaker. I prefer cold wet locations. Alaska, Maine. It's more exciting, You see fewer people. It's an adventure. Plus, you can always put on layers.
it's about all the struggle and endurance that you have to overcome. it's a great feeling once you have done and a great mindset that you can achieve anything. you then really appreciate normal things as well :)
You guys are sooo lucky to have auto-pilot, of course we sailed 35 years with someone on the wheel constantly. It sure makes the passage so much kinder, gotta love technology...and the safety, comfort, reassurance it provides. Thanks and stay safe. ⛵️
When and as you first started out as a dream to live as sailors,I never imagined you would go so far and expierence so much, congratulates to ya and a thanks from my vAracious living ,be well ,safe and come full circle soon,I pray you did alot to leed from a dream you made real,I relearn to dream on my own, many thanks-cheers!
I enjoy your videos so much. (I always click the LIKE button before I watch.) Your videos bring back happy memories of the days when the boat was my home. Best time of my life. I'm odd. I liked the steel grey seas more than blue or green seas. I just felt so much more at one with the ocean. ----- Love Kika's enthusiasm for everything. Can see that Dan loves her enthusiasm, too.
AWESOME EPISODE AS ALWAYS :) But i would love to see more maps of where you are and where yore hedning :) (doted line type) many of the places your speaking of is possible kommun knowledge on your side of the Atlantic but not on this side ( I hope, lol) all the best from the otherside // Micke (Sweden)
I agree - I am from Australia and do not know the coastline well there. I have looked up Chesapeake Bay .... and found it was in Virginia near Washington. Whereas in my mind Chesapeake was in/near Canada.....
I appreciate I’m preaching to the choir, but just in case someone wanting to emulate your adventures isn’t aware, radar and AIS are terrific navigational aids, however you are still required to keep a visual watch. Don’t become too dependent on the technology. Learn how to read the paper charts, buoys and beacons and use the Light List for more detailed information. Yeah it’s old school but for me it’s an essential part of safe navigation. Love the sailing scenes!
Lydia Johnson I’m not sure it is a matter of being too comfortable, cuz often it is very difficult to be comfortable on a sailboat in miserable weather. Further the Uma crew have talked about how they maintain a watch when huddled up in the cabin and I am fine with their method. My comment was directed to the casual observer or a novice sailor who might take away from this video AIS and radar replaces an eyes on visual watch. It doesn’t. FYI, the Colregs make no exception to the requirement to maintain a visual watch, at all times.
There is a order in catalog. Called Dennis kirk. They cater to snowmobilers and stuff like that, they have these things called glove liners there a little stretchy gloves with aluminum mesh inside and it locks in your body heat you put them under your waterproof gloves and your hands stay very very warm and they’re very cheap you might want to look into it
When I was a kid, we lived not far from Buckroe Beach. I used to run away from home and hang out in the amusement park there. Its long since gone and the only remaining landmark of the park is the small light house that was part of the miniature golf course. We learned to sail in the Chesapeak. My wife learned in the Virgin Islands. We now sail out of San Diego. == Blue skies, fair winds. :)
Hi guys, and welcome back to "the north" and back to Chesapeake Bay! Dan; my wife, daughters and I live in Kamloops, BC but I've been spending a lot of time in Maryland lately... refitting a boat that the four of us will be moving on to next year and then following your wake across the Atlantic...
Just finished binge watching all of your videos and loved them. You have had so many wonderful and different adventures. Thanks for bringing us along. What sets you apart from so many other channels is that you do the work on your boat yourself and show us how you did it and why. That makes it so much more interesting. Looking forward to more boat work and adventures. God Speed!
Glad to see you safe at port after that chilling passage. Get some rest you two, your repair and upgrade list is epic. Remember the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. 🤗🥰
I watch several sailing vlogs, and I must say... you two are right at the top. You offer great sailing tips and also have fun. Looking forward to your big adventure across the North Atlantic.
The last time I anchored my sailboat for a night in Salt Ponds there were just five or six houses on or near the water. That was 1984-86 timeframe. I'm not sure either of you were even born yet. Enjoy it while you have it. Time quite literally sails by. As Bob Segar wrote and sang, "I wish I didn't know know what I didn't know then." Super nice passage. Great job.
Hey, next time try the inside ICW using the Pamlico and Albermarle Sounds then through the Great Dismal Swamp. Enjoyable sailing and totally different environmental and historical experiences. Fair winds..
Used to live in Norfolk for about 10 or so years, for a while lived right on the Chesapeake bay used to fish out there almost every night after work, miss it.
I lived at Chick's Beach, right next to the bridge tunnel on the Virginia side. It had a temperate microclime, never had much snow. There was a flock of green parrots that lived there, saw them one morning eating chokecherries behind my house and spent a couple weeks trying to figure out how they survived. They lived in a hollow tree across the highway, and everybody left food out for them. Somebody had released a breeding pair years before.
Old Navy Photog Tika you are an awesome editor I've only been a photog not a video type I know it's difficult. Be safe on your Artic adventure thats not a friendly place. I enjoyed the end of your tape where you explained how your managing to get buy.
Always amazes me how you can sail through the night without hitting anything, and sleeping through it. Great passage. Looking forward to the boat work and Atlantic crossing. Cheers
I so enjoy following you two. I wonder, now and then, if you plan to put those degrees in architecture into financial use. Clearly, your engineering minds contribute heavily to solving technical sailing problems.
When in fog, radar and AIS do not give you an excuse for not displaying the appropriate audible signals...I know, no one does it but.....The big "but" hits you with its full force in case of an accident....Electronic aids are just a help. Just a statement for eventual reference.
Have enjoyed watching the transformation of both you two as a couple, as well as Uma, as a capable sailboat that certainly has so much more creature comfort below in it's own transformation. So well done guys. What a great couple. Thank you for sharing.
Hello Dan & Kika, I used to live in Chesapeake VA while I was in the US Navy. There is a nice Naval museum in Portmouth, VA really really close to you. On the other side of the river, there's the Waterside Mall if that's still the name of it. It's quite a unique space with a bar that play Irish music out on the balcony. Also, the naval base used to have tours of different ships on Sundays on the Naval Base down there. That might be really interesting for you too! I hope you enjoy your time there, I remember it with fond memories! Just like your videos! I look forward to each and every one of them!
Another great video they just keep getting better and better you are taking great video and great contacts along with the music it's just beautiful love seeing the boat break into them waves like that looks like a beautiful sail now to get some blood work done be safe
I was stationed in Norfolk for five years. Lots to do in that area. If you like history. Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown are up the road. I know you've got alot of work on your plate. Good luck and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures.
Dan & Kika, another amazing passage back to the States. A little bit of everything thrown at you two and you weathered it in true UMA form. We are so proud of your true sailor characters. A question, I'm dying for a torqueedo engine update... I've got electric conversations on the brain lately. Are hopes, prayers, support and excitement for the upcoming refit and northern passage to you both. ⛵
Guys!!! Ik that marina!!! I used to live about 15 minutes away from there!!! Beautiful area!!! I'm only about a 6 hour drive from there now! Love the Chesapeake Bay area
If you're putting in a woodstove, have you carefully thought about fuel storage? Wood is heavy and takes a lot of space; I'd suggest compressed sawdust bricks (by-product of furniture/flooring industry, compact size, lots of heat value, almost no ash or creosote) but they can't get damp or they expand back into loose sawdust, so probably not the best for a small boat at sea.
Love your videos and thank you so much for continuing to post on RUclips. I would already be a Patron, I'm saving for a boat of my own! Cheers & Fair Winds~

Nice change from the Caribbean. To this armchair traveler anyway ( : < ). And real weather. Glad you are past Hatteras. Old friend of mine lost his boat , and nearly his life, there after a single-handed, nearly-round-the-world trip. Had some harrowing times there myself on U.S. Army watercraft.
you guys make me cry.... such good hearted sincere awesome individuals and team

Dan n Kika are following the steps of Captain Smith going to meet Pocohantas
What a good sail. Uma is a very happy boat. And you two are good partners and good sailors. Thank you and sail on!!!

Hatteras is no joke! We were surfing our boat and saw true winds of 35 to 58 knots, and 6 to 7m waves. We have a lot of respect for that place.
We are so glad you had a safe passage, and looking forward to your awaiting projects. As usual another excellent video.
I loved the ending when you showed coming into the harbor. Really paints a picture.
Love you Kiddos !!! I had to binge watch in the beginning to get caught up, but now I never miss a much-anticipated and enjoyed Step. Thanks.
Love you two! Thanks for filling our screens with quality entertainment, learning and fun!
