I don't get why streaming services are trying so hard for originals when 80% of shows from 70's,80's,90's, and 00's are not available. So many of those old shows with one or 2 seasons could have rights nabbed very cheap.

Absolutely. Sundays on the WB, but more when it was on WGN nationwide (almost everyone forgets that Tribune had stake in WB and when the merger with UPN took place, WB and UPN had 45% stake respectively, but Tribune had 10%).

UPN had some of the best Cartoons! And their Japanese anime block was so awesome!
Black sitcoms were not only better in the 90's but they were able to reach a wide audience of various demographics.
I grew up in a very white town, only a single black family in my highschool and only two asian families. I had no idea this was a Black focused programing block, it was just amazing TV and was even relatable to someone who didn't have a chance to interact with anyone not white or native until i was around 12ish.
In the UK, Sister Sister was on Nickelodeon channel. Smart Guy was on Disney Channel, so whenever they did a crossover episode it was kinda cool.
The rest, and a lot of black comedy shows, were on this UK channel called Trouble, which was the cool channel.

The Living Single creators and cast expressed their dislike for Friends cause they became the highest paid cast on day time tv & gained most of the success while Living Single got nothin. David Schwimmer apologized to the cast for basically high jacking their show.
girlfriends is a great show. It was more cerebral comedy than the others. It was from the creators of Frasier, which i never really looked at, but i looked at this. It's the only one out og this group I thought was good.

The only one of these that I actually know about is Sister, Sister because The Hub Network used to air reruns of it along with a bunch of old sitcoms during prime time like Happy Days or ALF.

I always thought he was Urkels cool cousin. My babysitter screwed with my head as a kid and told me so many shows were connected via her weird made up stories. She also taught me Kramer was Phoebe and Ursula's older brother, Mr Rogers was Wilson on tool time, Mo from smart guy was Will smith before he got in a fight and had to leave town and change his name,

Listening to a recent miniseries on Mission Hill (What a Cartoon - Talking Mission Hill), shows like Buffy, Dawson's Creek and Roswell coming along was the death sentence for that show. WB was still trying to figure out what kind of network they were for a while, but once Pokémon and the teen dramas came along they locked into that formula and tossed the rest aside.
Luckily said show seems to have a revival via spin-off in the works (Wally & Gus), or at least it's getting pitched.

Never thought of it but yeah when Dawson came out all the black sitcoms phased out and the teen dramas rose.
Looking at analytics of WB and airings of shows, it was more Smallville and other scifi/fantasy shows taking over in 2000/01 when the black sitcoms really were replaced. Dawsons creek ending also unleashed a new wave of replacement white dramas in 2003. but it doesn't really look like many shows ended for 2 years of dawsons creek being on air.
I'll be excited when they bring back "Homeboys in Outer Space" and "The Waynes Brothers."

Question dose anybody remember the show Hang Time I remember it being funny was first time seeing Anthony Anderson and was standing out in it.
I indulged in all of these shows when I was younger. UPN’s block of black shows kept me glued to the tv. Robert Ri’chard was one of my first tv crushes too. It’s so funny that All of Us ain’t get no love but folk not checking for Duane Martin 😂 and Frank Mitchell will catch all of the smoke now because he wasn’t that great of a father on Moesha. That Saturn salesman is going to be a trending topic on twitter for sure. This was some good news to wake up to this morning and I cannot wait time binge these shows.
And now I hope Nickelodeon will stream Cousin Skeeter and My brother and Me.

Terrance Foreman There should be a way for Netflix and Nickelodeon to do this. They should talk this out with the music artists and holders at court and see if they can negotiate a compromise. And besides, Netflix is a bigger company than Nickelodeon. I’m sure they have the money to do so. And do you think that Netflix’s music licensing is different than the broadcast and the same as Social media? Because I have seen the official All that youtube channel upload their musical guests and performance from some of the old episodes back from the 90s. And RUclips and rest of social media’s music licensing is different than VRV’s, ITunes releases, amazon prime video and broadcast reruns of the older show. And I don’t know where Netflix is in the social media spectrum... So yeah Nickelodeon should go to court and talk this out. It’s only a matter of time before Netflix starts putting out all of Nickelodeon’s past content once the third Spongebob movie release on there.
Black Nerd Comedy should be at 10 million subscribers by now. The fact that he's not is what's wrong with RUclips.

I'm so excited, I hope this extends to Netflix UK. Growing up we didn't have many Black UK shows but we had cable and I was able to watch all the shows you mentioned . It was great. Sister Sister was my favourite
One on One theme song before she went to college was fire. Her pops and his best friend were my favorite parts of the show. His friend was so funny. I've seen all of these shows as kid and I loved them all. Rachel Tru is so beautiful. I still have a crush on her to this day. Toni is still the best from Girlfriends, she was my favorite, then Mya, Linn, and Traci. The Game before it went to BET was at its best, BET killed the show. I could go on and on about all these shows. Man, seeing black shows growing up was so relatable and fun to watch. They were funny and knew when to be serious and talk about certain topics.

I remember when the joke was that WB stood for Welcome Brothas as it was the only block of Black shows on network TV.
Yep. Then they started sneaking in white shows like Unhappily Ever After (ripoff of Married With Children), Dawson's Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In just 2 to 3 years, the WB went from Welcome Brothas to Whoa Buffy.
@@southpaw2k1 Unhappily Ever After and another show, Muscle, was there from the jump though. The former aired for much longer than the latter's single season run. 7th Heaven was as well and seemed to stay on the network FOREVER!

Moesha? That was jam! I would watch it before Thursday night Smackdown on UPN. Malcom and Eddie was another good one, then everything became a blur. There was another show I loved I can't remember the name.

With their Nickelodeon contract I'm hoping they get Yo Gabba Gabba and iCarly, I got 6 nieces and 1 nephew, plus their friends over all the time.... well, not the friends since covid, but still, they're at that age that would enjoy them, and it's hard to find stuff we'll all like. I am so excited to share Sister Sister, and since I've been introducing them to 90s r&b, I'll happy to show them Moesha.

SN: I've always wondered why UPN never showed the episodes of what happened after Moesha's little brother got kidnapped. Every time that episode aired, they go back to Season 1. Was it canceled or whatever?

When I saw One on One and Half & Half?? I screamed, these shows are always forgotten when we talk about black sitcoms. If they bring back All of Us and Eve, my heart would fill with joy.
I want them to bring back the parent 'hood
I grew up in a VERY white area. one black kid and 2 asian kids in my school of 400. Growing up i saw so many shows and movies talk about racism so think their must be a reason.
Zack and Aisha from MMPR, TJ Marcus Mo and their sister from Smart guy, and Virgil from static shock, and Vince from Recess(except he fit the stereotype and may not have been a good example) were my only real experiance with someone who was black until i was 12ish. They showed me normal people in the shows so i was so confused by racism i was terrified i was a racist.
My cousin got married to a black guy and when i met his son who was a year younger i was very nervous until he asked why i was being weird. i cried and said i had never met a blck person and was scared i was racist. he laughed and said i clearly wasn't and said we were family now.
So me being a confused 12 year old began telling everyone at school i was 1/8th black since my cousin married his dad. I did so for nearly 2 years before my science teacher corrected me in class. was funny in hindsight.

I'm only semi-kidding here. I do want to see Kids WB get revived, but it's not too important.
I'd love Smart Guy to come back. Sister Sister was great too. Yes, Essence Atkinsons was amazing.

If they just want to stream them, fine...but if they try to remake/revamp them? No. They've ruined enough old shows. They should just stick to showing us the stuff we liked, not changing them to what they think we want now.
I wish the tv show " The Parent Hood " was also on Netflix but it currently airs on Encore Black . The Parent Hood was another 90s black sitcom I watched a lot .

I hope they put the complete series of The Wayans Bros. on Netflix. Out of all the UPN/WB shows from back in the day. That one was the best and my favorite(besides Buffy the Vampire Slayer)! I was beyond pissed when TWB was canceled! I have the first Season on DVD but the other Seasons are just so expensive! DVD’s are becoming more and more obsolete but yet they still want to charge so much for them! It’s freakin ridiculous! Just like I still have Super Nintendo amongst a few other older systems and yet games for them cost the exact same as games for my PS4! It’s freakin BS! Sorry for going off on a tangent. Over all is I hope they put the entire series of The Wayans Bros. on Netflix because if they don’t they’re gonna make me take off my belt!!! LMAO! 😂
