Happy Sunday everyone! I have a bit of a bonus Ramble for you today and I'm super excited about it. As you may know, I'm a shawl gal now and I'm just starting to really open my eyes to all that means for me as a knitter and wearer of hand-knit things...in the case of today's video, that means BANDANAS! They're definitely like a cousin to the shawl and they come with an interesting history that I touch on just a smidge here. In regards to the history of the bandana, I want to point out one thing in particular: The Japanese shibori technique certainly played a part in the development of the more freeform dyeing technique we know of as "tie dye" made popular in the 1960s in the US. However, shibori was and is today a VERY intricate and precious craft that goes far beyond the scope of "tie dye". I encourage you to look into shibori. It's a fascinating craft. Here are some links if you'd like to learn more about bandana history: www.heddels.com/2017/05/the-history-of-the-bandana/ www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/global-history-bandana-180976040/ habilitateblog.com/the-multivalent-history-of-the-bandana/ Ravelry Bundle for Bandanas and Kerchiefs: www.ravelry.com/bundles/kerchiefs-bandanas
Tayler - though not all things are for all people, all your videos are for all people! I love your rabbit holes - and your sense of humor, as you (as we all do) find something interesting and wander off into a little reverie. I hope you get a lot of credit for all the WORK you put into these videos, a considerable amount of put into editing. This take s talent and a lot of time. You consistently knock the cover off the ball! Well done.
"It's just a bandana, it's not a pair of pants." Tayler, you do have a way with words! 😄👏🏾 I liked your history of the bandana, too. Thanks for this ramble. I have a couple of these patterns in my library and you've convinced me to pull them out and finally make them!
Taylor, thank you very much for sharing these patterns. I also appreciate that you create bundles on Ravelry. It's so much easier to favourite the items as you go along.
I wondered if anyone would be wearing one as a scarf (covering hair). My Mom and aunts would to cover curlers if they had to run to the store! Ahhh the good old days😂
Gosh Tayler, I went down a rabbit hole when you did the podcast on shawls and have started my first one. Now I’ve gone down another one 😂😂 Thankyou so much, loved it 🥰
That Kate Davies kerchief!!! I often forget how much I love her patterns until you mention her designs. And the pantheon, I have been on the hunt for bandanas so THANK YOU, for doing this legwork to help my search. You have been on target with all the things for me for weeks!! I love it
Such a fun video, thanks for the suggestions Tayler! I've actually taken to wearing light colored bandanas around my hair as a way to keep my head cool from the sun since I have dark hair, and could definitely use a few more.
I appreciate seeing the styling, that's the main reason I haven't tried knitting bandanas yet. I have a skein of linen yarn from a mystery box that I didn't know what to do with, now I know. 😀
Bolo tie? southwestern style. Love, love neckerchiefs. My favorite item to knit besides socks. Thanks for this episode. I constantly wear them for dog walking, bike riding, etc. Living in the southwest, the neckerchief seems to be an essential.
Yes! Bolo! I couldn’t find that works when I was recording. 😅 And you’re absolutely right. Bandanas are still a very southwest staple and very functional for this climate. 🏜️
Thanks a lot 🎉 The bundles saved my Ravelry queue! 😂 I love the look on the striped one! If there is any help with translation needed, let me know😅😊 my mother tongue is German!! Lovely greetings from Austria!!❤❤
One of the things I love about your videos is the inspiration it provides! The rabbit trails are a hoot sometimes. I have some extrafine merino I bought for a project that went in a different direction and one of these patterns might be a way to use that yarn. Thanks so much for sharing these cool patterns!
Your podcasts and rambles are just so entertaining. Love your topics and energy! BTW: The I love stripes bandana is available in English as well. Just the description in ravelry is in German.
Yes! All those kerchiefs bring back fun memories. I love the casual and chic options, too. Such a simple thing can jazz up life! Easy, lightweight and quick to knit...what fun. I have been spinning bamboo and these would be a great little items to make . I was trying to gear up to knit a tank top for a friend's summer birthday, but now I say bandanas for everyone!!! Thanks again for more great ideas and sources.
I appreciate the history review of the Bandana and your intelligent approach to the craft! You are my favorite knitting person to watch. Look forward to your show every week. Your picks are spot on! I am going to try knitting Scarf No. 1 , I LOVE STRIPES and the Shopie Sc. Great way to use up scraps and showcase some of my favorite yarns!
This means so much Tracey. Thank you! And I casted on a solid version of the I LOVE STRIPES and I'm loving it so far. The Scarf No. 1 is next for sure. ❤️
Thanks for this video. I’m working in my third Sophie Scarf (almost 10,000 ravelry downloads). Now you have shown a wonderful variety of other patterns to choose next.
thank you so much. I'm In the middle of a Natural dyeing class and I have a number of different fibers dyed in 6 color rainbow range and I was about to look for some simple bandanas to make color swatch of each fiber type. you did the work for me. thanks again for your great videos
Thank you so much sharing these. I love the stripe bandana. Would you review some leg warmer stuffs too? Those items are go well with young fashion right now and also can be a great gift for winter..
I love the knitting badge pattern - I knit a small one and loved it so much I used the pattern to make a shawl! It looks amazing on a yarn with radiant colours or stripes.
Hi Tayler. Very interesting topic. Personally, for me, sitting here in the intense heat and humidity in the northeast, I cannot fathom wearing a knitted bandana in the summer. Actually, unless I’m In air conditioning, I can’t see myself even knitting, lol. That being said, I can definitely see making and wearing these in the late summer when things start to cool off and also in the fall. They would make beautiful accessories and provide warmth. All of these patterns are lovely. Definitely something to think about. Thanks for sharing.😊🤗
Love the collection, been hoping to make one (or more) with some left-over stash. But now I will have a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” earworm keeping me up all night 😂
I really like the Bennet Bandana and the Polkagris Kerchief!! I have so much left over sock yarn that would be perfect to use up especially in the Polkagris pattern!! Thank you Taylor for the great ideas!!
Yep, I think you're onto something here. I just finished the Smooth Headscarf, ,(knit with ribbing across the width to hug the head), for a friend. I want to make one for myself too! 😊
Great list, thanks, Tayler. As an addition, the Sorgenfri is really similar to Scarf No. 1 and is free! I knit one for my Sister-in-law last year in a special skein and it came out lovely.
These would be really fun projects to use up the ends of handspun, since tension be damned! I've been thinking about getting one for when I'm working in the yard. A damp cotton or linen on the back of my neck would be nice.
Thank you, Taylor! I love the history leason. I always find something to inspire a new knit in your podcast. I am thinking of my 10 year old granddaughter right now. She loves❤ scarves. I think a bandana is in her future, something cute to sport in her fifth grade year.❤❤
Thanks for doing my work for me. I’ve been spinning some camel, but I don’t have a lot of it and I wondered what I’d do with the yarn. I was thinking a bandana or headband.
@@diannecarter1754 I’m glad you’re enjoying the weather now, It’s gets like that at this time of the year, It’s been cold here in Ohio also, But spring is coming out now, I’ve been to South Carolina couple of times, I’ve been to Lexington, Clemson, Columbia, Spartanburg. It's called Woggle, used to hold the ends of the scouts scart, it's circular and has the emblem, usually made of thick plastic or metal. I was a girl guide in school. The history of bandana was interesting. Good selection.
Okay, you've convinced me of the greatness of the bandana and I jotted down two of these patterns. My problem is that I want to knit a summer thing with a 50/50 cotton/bamboo yarn like the Viking Garn Bambino, and it doesn't seem to be available here. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
Hi Missus Earl. I thought for a moment you'd show a clip of Grace Kelly. She wears driving scarves in more than one film. Love Audrey though. I'm trying to figure out which of these scarves can be knitted sideways, instead of top down or bottom up.
So Roman Holiday is one of my favorite movies and I feel like I missed an opportunity here to include a clip of Audrey wearing that adorable scarf around her neck. However the cat, trench coat, black sunglasses, and head scarf is very Breakfast at Tiffany’s for me. 😎

By the way--I went stash-diving and found a good option for the Knitting Badge Neckerchief. It's in process now! Thanks again for the inspo!

There’s a lot to unpack here, but I will say-if it’s not for you, it’s not for you. And that’s totally ok. 👍
Bandanas are also part of queer culture, as they have been and are still used to flag your preferences and kinks worn on the belt or in the pocket. I'm more a straight scarf accessoires type person than bandanas or shawls, still interesting to see what's out there 😊
The symbolic use of bandanas across subcultures and communities is VAST and super interesting. And it goes way back in history. The context(s) may have changed over time or in some cases, become more or less subversive, but it still remains a very expressive item of clothing. And a powerful one at that. However, it is also worn by many with no intentional symbolic value, leading to an almost gray area. And like you mention here, it’s not just the bandana; it’s also the way it’s worn. I really went down this rabbit hole and I think it’s so interesting. Thank you for this input!
In my neighborhood wearing that blue bandana you've got on would get you shot. Maybe this isn't the video for me.
I mean…context matters there too and of course which of your back pockets it’s hanging from…but don’t do anything you’re not comfortable with. 👍
