Whatever money taken on that paycheck as taxes belongs to the government for up to 16 months, you can't get it back or otherwise use it to pay bills or live until the following April. It doesn't work out in your favor, don't spread misinformation if you don't understand how hourly taxes and payroll work. Anyone taking your advice will end up with less money for the rest of the year until tax day, and most people need every dollar they can get.
It might, to a VERY SMALL level, increase your marginal tax rate. But at the same time it LOWERED your tax rate for this week. Unless the amount underpaid is a large portion of your income, the difference will be pennies. Progressive tax rates only have a few steps, so its unlikely for $200 to change the rate at all. And the truth is that in April when you file your tax return any small diffetence will be refunded. It sucks if you live literally paycheck to paycheck to be shorted a $, but in the end, it costs you nothing in taxes. So, unless this happens regularly, its a dumb solution to commit theft, lose your job and get a criminal record. And yes, it IS firing to remove company assets and sell them, even to settle a legitimate wages dispute. Far better to quit and demand severance for 'constructive firing'. Even in the US, failing to pay a worker on time is considered unjust termination.

The supervisor should have caught the time clock issue prior to approving her timesheet. The issue could have been rectified before payroll was processed for the pay period.
Veronica gets fired and prosecuted for theft, spending a night in jail before spending savings or maxing out a credit card to bond out…she hires a criminal defense attorney and an employment lawyer, going into massive debt. She sues the employer for wage theft and retaliatory discharge, litigation takes two years, she loses her car and her apartment. She eventually wins a little money. The lawyers make bank. The End.
PS: Theft is no solution and a crime on top. You can take interest rates on the money they owe you, if it is possible, and instead discussing this with the manager - who has no power over that situation at all, you could go straight to paycheck department and sort it out with the right people
Usually Veronica would have a smarter solution to her situation, like going to HR, but straight up stealing wasn't really the best option here. Not really a valuable lesson. She's just going to go to jail.
lol, maybe in your state (assuming you live in the state of Confusion). This is a civil matter. Think about it. I once just didn’t get paid for half a month and never recovered it. I know lots of vets the Army ripped off.

If you work for an organization where there is so little trust between you and the administration, you need to move on. Don't commit a crime in retaliation for a crime. File a complaint with the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FRLA). They take payroll shenanigans SERIOUSLY. They tend to come in assuming the employee was the damaged party.

Oh, so the bank can be late paying me without penalty, but if I'm late on my credit card payment I get charged a late fee and it gets reported to the credit bureaus? Make it make sense!
Although I wish this was a solution, the law doesn’t see it like that. The way they see it is that she should have went to small claims courts and sued them for the money. All Veronica did was her getting arrested. Unfortunately 😒, deep down in my bones I wish we could do this. 😣
The thing is she would have her money in 2 weeks, and it takes longer than that to get a court date. It sucks, but not worth getting fire to get all final pay in 72 hours, plus possible jail time and penalties.
Stealing is stealing, you can't steal company stuff over a salary dispute. She's gonna get axed for this and no judge will decide differently. That said, the company of course can send/give/wire her the money immediately. It might take a day or two to get processed. Important thing is to make it clear to the employee that they are taken seriously and a mistake is corrected.
@@aff77141 A salary dispute is not stealing. They are going to give her the money, just later, which sucks. They should have wired it as soon as the mistake was discovered. Mistakes get made. Stealing is deliberate.
A judge is going to take issue with violation of labor laws as well. Payroll policy is anchored on binding labor contracts - you can’t just choose to pay your employees whenever you want and make no effort to address any unforeseen payroll issues. Taking 200 dollars worth of stuff over “a salary dispute” is a whole subjective perspective and you’re more than entitled to it, but really the biggest legal liability is the labor law violation more so than mitigating item taking. A good lawyer would have a field day with Janet and this entire corporation
You do not get to pick how you are compensated. I would have contacted payroll directly. Usually the managers do not know what options payroll has to correct the problem. $200 is enough money that the payroll department should consider getting the money to you today or tomorrow.
Well they can definitely issue the 200 now as a special circumstance. Taking 200 dollars worth of stuff would be criminal. It sucks but there are legal remedies

This incident is raising concerns about this company’s competency as a valid and honest employer. I think I will need to start looking for other companies that can handle simple payroll mistakes in a timely manner and also have a discussion with the labor board and my lawyer.
Oooh no 🤣 Veronica just picked up a whole theft charge 🤣 2 wrongs don’t make a right is a real legal precedent… but some hypothetical judge will be the one to let Veronica know that though. 😁✌️ Veronica would need a receipt to prove she only took $200 worth of stuff to protect herself, but idk officer… she didn’t ring out and she may have taken $1000s worth 🤷♂️
Stealing out of spite is a malicious act and is prosecutable. Whereas a clerical error is an error and can be argued it wasn't malicious, even if it was. You have to prove it was malicious. Don't steal like Veronica. That was a bad move.
In the UK Veronica would be dismissed, even if employees are owed money they have to wait until the next payroll cycle. Theft is classed as gross misconduct.
I used to work in payroll and this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Mistakes sometimes happen. No one in payroll is out to steal an employees money. Employees can and do communicate directly with payroll, they don't need a manager to do it for them. I've always apologized to the employee and done a correction as soon as possible. Which was usually by the end of the workday, unless there was a system error I couldn't get fixed immediately. Approaching the issue calmly and without hostility goes a long way in getting things fixed quickly. Taking company property is never the solution and could in fact get you arrested.
I don't get from this dialog that it is a manager but rather an overseer of "payroll department" (don't know how you call it). Of course mistakes happen but they are better accepted when responsability is taken, not hidden and communication is open, not fake. This has just happen for the 2nd time for me. Multiple employees are affected but not with the same amount. They say nothing after being made aware. They count on people not noticing! Plus, an employee is overdrown. She has no proposition for help/support, no empathy shown, not even an answer! The company might lose money because of mishaps but the employee might also get electricity cut or her children unable to eat at school. The consequences are way worse and immediate for the employee. She at least deserves consideration and appropriate excuses. Clearly that's not the intent. They were quicker to reach out daily when it was time to sell the unused company car.
I know this is a skit but that company will have you prosecuted and depending on the type of job, you wouldnt be able to get another job in the same field. Alot of jobs run background checks and as soon as they see theft conviction. Nope...
I don't know why I was expecting this to turn out as a Family Guy parody of the episode in which Brian owing Stewie money and Stewie beats the crap out of him twice. "Where's my money?! I want my money man. I'm tired of you ducking me man. You got money for Starbucks. Where's my money?!"
Why attribute to malice what can be easily explained by ineptitude? The most likely scenario is that they are incompetent and didn’t file the paperwork for the extra $200 she earned in time.
What she did was wrong. She should have gone the legal route and called the labor board. This is one where I think she should be fired and arrested for theft.

Im a bookkeeper and there is no reason anyone should have to wait for the next paycheck unless they just dont care. You advance the employee the amount, minus taxes, then add the missing hours to the next paycheck, then subtract the reimbursement. Simple. All comes out in the wash, and everyone has what theyre owed timely.
Sorry to say this, but if your household budget is configured in a way that you are living paycheck to paycheck to the extent that you literally can't do without $200 for 2 more weeks until your next paycheck, you need to examine your finances. Not saying I'd be happy about a payroll mistake, but mistakes happen. She's going to get her money on the next paycheck, it's not the end of the world. Maybe Veronica can look at cutbacks with some of her discretionary spending, or maybe do some Uber and Lyft driving for a few extra bucks in cash until she saves up a bit of a reserve. I know it's tough in this economy, but it's worth giving that a try. Everyone should have several months worth of expenses saved up in a bank account just in case.
Bruh. How much someone has in their account is a moot point. When you earn the money, it is not unreasonable to expect to be paid. It's only $200, right? Why not just write out a check from discretionary funds and pay the employee? Surely they have enough in their emergency account to cover it!

After this convo security would have definitely been escorting me directly off the premises

Yep and it should be sorted in about 4 months.
So many comments on these shorts talking about some fantasy "labor board" that magically makes everything better with a snap of the fingers.
She should have taken more than the $200 to cover the time she had to spend on eBay to make up the loss.

As a supervisor, i always hated when the company would ask employees to work overtime, because invariably, mistakes would be made on at least one guys check, and i'd have to calm the guy down until i got payroll to correct it. I dont think it was ever intentional, our payroll supervisor was devastated whrn she made a mistake. But so many companies dont get that messing with a guy's beer money is a cardinal sin, and having a policy like "our next check run is next week" is complete bullshit. YOU made the mistake, YOU FIND A WAY TO FIX IT, NOW.

@@TheHiredGun187 probably similar here. Actually, funny enough, they shorted my cheque last week by $100. I asked my employer about it but they just ignored my email. This. There's no reason, if they knew there was a problem before she talked to her manager, they wouldn't have been able to figure out a reasonable solution. It is against the law to not pay someone for their labor, when you have an agreement. So, while Veronica taking things from the company and selling them is not a good idea, and we all understand the frustration that drove her to it. This shouldn't have been at issue.
Yeah, if their solution is to add the pay into the next paycheck, then they should be willing to agree to a "small interest addition" to cover the things that would hev been paid with that money. If my rent bounces because I was shorted, the company is the reason for all those penalty fees and should be willing to cover that sort of expense because of their eff-up.

Yep. But coulda, woulda, shoulda. Life happens and companies have procedures for this problem.

If you work for an organization where there is so little trust between you and the administration, you need to move on. Trying to take justice into your own hands presents all kinds of legal problems, and believe me, if you have to go to court over it, the court does not pay you to hang out for many hours trying to get justice. You will end up losing a lot of time as well as your money. And if you steal from those you perceive as theives, they are better at it than you, and you will end up in misery, and lose. Move on if you are in such a bad-trust situation. It's better to be unemployed than to be employed by someone you perceive as an enemy.

Don't commit a crime in retaliation for a crime. File a complaint with the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FRLA). They take payroll shenanigans SERIOUSLY. They tend to come in assuming the employee was the damaged party.
I had this happen to me once when I worked at a bank. They shorted me $120. I brought it up with my manager and she said I would get my shortage the next pay period.
@@selbarton I agree 100% it sux 😣, we’re damned if you do and we’re damned if we don’t. No win 🤦🏽♀️
Wage theft is stealing. Hence why it's called wage theft.
A long time ago, there was a race who stole a whole country from Native Americans. So......where was the law back then? Lol
So you agree they stole from her?

She would be fired in the United States as well. 😂
Bunch of clowns in these comments. Employers dont have to wait on work getting done and we shouldn't have to wait on our pay.
Possibly?! You were going to “possibly” email me….
I know this is a skit but that company will have you prosecuted and depending on the type of job, you wouldnt be able to get another job in the same field. Alot of jobs run background checks and as soon as they see theft conviction. Nope...

Me and a buddy worked in the kitchen of a fancy resort when we were just out of school. One Friday night both our paychecks bounced at the local bank along with about half the employees. My buddy and I went back to the resort office and grabbed two selectric typewriters and put them in our car. Veronika would relocate her boss's office to the dirty, dusty, dank warehouse and move into her boss's office.
Veronika would also bill the company for moving expenses and labor in addition to the $200.
Veronika would be staying in that office until the boss coughed up the $200 or until payroll cuts that check.

Get BENT.
Bruh. How much someone has in their account is a moot point. When you earn the money, it is not unreasonable to expect to be paid. It's only $200, right? Why not just write out a check from discretionary funds and pay the employee? Surely they have enough in their emergency account to cover it!
@@ladywytch129 It depends on the company, their cash flow systems and payroll procedures. Some small mom 'n pop companies can probably just say, "oops, didn't mean to shortchange you there, bucky! Let me send a quick DM to our in-house payroll processor and have her print a new check for you to pick up this afternoon." Other companies might use payroll firms like ADP which have procedural or contractual limits in their agreements with employers which won't allow them to do special check runs. Each situation may be unique. Either way, yes...the employer's payroll department screwed up, but also you're living too close to the edge if you can't live without $200 for 14 days.
