"If you really wanna gain the system, forget the points and miles and just buy a ticket on whatever airline is the cheapest."
...wait, doesn't everyone do this? I mean I do it. lol
Marketing, turning intelligence into gullibility since who knows when.
@Shinobu Takahashi I mean you can still gain the system with credit cards as long as you spend responsibly 🤷🏻♂️
It’s not like you lose something when paying with credit cards and gaining miles. So just be responsible and don’t overspend - you should be fine
I think most people do..
I think, to benefit from the miles and the credit cards.. don't go in debt with them.. so no interest is paid. If you can use the miles to get discount on flights that good otherwise you'll take the cheapest flight/most convinient out there for you.. it's working fine for me so far..
I mean yeah but some people fly often so considering a rewards program for the money you're spending isn't terrible
Please bring Adam ruins everything back! I love this informative show that debunks common myths! Its so eye-opening and helpful man! What a shame that i can' find any from the new decade.
Check out " Factually " its Adam's podcast and its great
Finally, someone that can explain the Free Flyer Miles. Thank you
Please sign up though and keep the system going. It helps those of us that are responsible with credit!
This is the chillest I've ever seen Amir
I love the guy in the background wearing sunglasses & an inflatable neck ring. Nice touch.
Cheeky bit of Flula, nice
If you take some time to understand and plan then yes, credit card & miles can be used to your advantage.
I have never paid any interest on my AA credit card and have flown to Japan for about $100 (to cover fees) and just confirmed 2 round trip tickets to Australia for just $200 (those same fees) both from NYC.
Be a bit flexible with travel .. like do I need to fly out at 5pm? or can I make an 10am flight
Use your credit card only when you have the cash to pay the bill in full
And keep the account active
... you'll be fine
Where's your paid referral link?
You have to ask yourself, would they design a system that didn't create a profit margine.
Like would a casino ever let you play a game where the house eventially wouldn't win in the long run.
That is the beauty of statistics. Something that seems profitable for a consumer, evetually plays in the hand of the company. The house always wins, because the house has written the rules.
@@HaninH. lol and that's not even talking about how I used the cash back rewards on my Capital One to cover all of my lodging in Japan for the 16 day trip
@@Taffoman 1) I don't have to ask myself that question
2) CC Companies can lose $ on those programs, perfect example is JP Morgan and their Saphire cards - they have lost MILLIONS. But in business, you have to spend $ to make $ - not different than marketing to get customers in. (look up some financial news if you'd like)
The question I have to ask myself is, how am I benefiting? If I'm spending $100 what do I get from making that transaction cash or debit? Nothing
EVERYONE is trying to make money - businesses & individuals, so no need to bring that up.
So what do I receive making a transaction credit? another on-time payment to help my credit score / history. Also, I can receive a % back in cash or miles.
cash or debit = nothing ... or credit = something. The simple math is there based on the same $100 I was going to spend regardless
@@MSproductionsNY you got the right idea, dude. Keep preaching.
That condescending laugh at 2:07 really hit.
Thanks for this video! Very informative! I was here after watching James Asquith's video explaining the Frequent Flyer Loyalty Programmes. Your video gave me more insight on the pros and compare it with some cons of these programs.
Good luck on your next video!
Can we appreciate that we got people from Horrible Histories and Amir and Josh from College Humor in this clip
Adam was originally a college humor cast member
@@Life_and_Gaming ik but it's got his name on the title and this is one of the only episodes they're in
“Holy guack am never tipping again” lying toolbox extraordinaire
I work for an airline that proudly offers a mile earned for a mile flown. And as far as the activity goes if you don’t fly for 2 years the mileage plan will become inactive but they can reactivate it.
Yes please talk about how your airline is nice and user friendly but don't mention what that airline is we'll just guess
What airline?
I swear I seen this video being uploaded three times already.
Yeah, WTH, why do they keep uploading, to get more views and ad revenue?
Adam doesn't ruin anything, he pimps it.
ziljin ikr
O JQ Reuploading removes all views and likes. So no.
I got this video "rec'd" for months nothing short than..
...15 times!
So: Were they part of “continual re-upload” exercise? 🤔
4:32
The most intelligent point in this video
Misleading title. Should say "why mile rewards are bad" since this video doesn't actually explain how they work.
As in???
How they apply against the ticket-prices? 🤔
He doesn’t know how they work
This is a clip, not the full episode
Also the answer to the title is "they don't, and that's the point". They're a scam.
Yes you should read that big pamphlet everyone throws away (it explains the terms and conditions for the program)
I guess this would explain why so many families try to get their children to plan flights a long long time ahead. Because that's usually one of the best times when flights are the cheapest.
I flew on the last DC-10 with an open bar. Flying was most definitely better in the old days. Other than that, he's spot on.
3:26 How did Flula severely downplay his accent?? Also, I love that his cameo is simple, yet epic! 😎
My guess is this is his normal English accent. He normally exaggerates it for his character.
It's this video which makes me wonder why there isn't more outrage from coupons issued by manufacturers for products we don't buy.
It kind of says that issuing rewards for its best customers isn't fair to the people who aren't the best customers.
?? I dont get what you're saying..
isnt that just the manufacturer trying to entice people to buy their product by offering a lower price? Why would there be outrage for that?
This one is definitely Adam ruins the truth. I also liked the "range" of factual references.
Glad I watched this. Thanks for the heads up.
I feel like this is only half right. There's some valid points about the programs that people may not know but you're not being ripped off by getting frequent flyer miles for a trip you're planning on doing anyway. If you don't use it then no harm but if you end up gathering enough miles to make a planned trip free then how is someone being ripped off? If you travel often and a mileage reward is better than a cashback one for your rewards card then that's great but overall I think this episode could've been a lot better and is assuming incorrectly quite a bit.
Its not free... Did you catch the part about the tax?
@@acarroll1714 They're still paying for your flight and I'm pretty sure the last time I flew on points or had a hotel on points I didn't pay tax.
@@Kefka2010 Maybe watch the video again.
@@acarroll1714 did the video fly or stay at a hotel on points or did I? Maybe you should try some independent research given that many places have their own policies on these things.
Whether you use the card or not, you still pay taxes. So just pay the tax and use the card, pay off what’s due promptly every month and rake those miles up.
U are doing this out off the kindness of your heart

Frequent Flyers Programs: Miles=Ticket prices and not actual miles flown
DCS players: sounds familiar
I’ve never fallen for the credit card frequent flyers points. I remember a teller at my bank kept trying to enroll me in a credit card. I told her no thanks.
She tried to tell me this lies about my debit card in comparison to a credit card. Which is even more creepy coming coming from my own bank.
I never fall for it either. I only use cc to get miles to fly for free
The truth about credit cards please!
He already has, it's the first episode on netflix
@@bouncytheboy really
It's simple, don't have one. Don't buy things you can't afford.
@@fermitupoupon1754 What about buying everything on a credit card, then immediately paying it off in order to accrue cash-back rewards?
@@joshuahernandez8814 spend within your means and pay off your credit card in full each month. Treat your credit card like a debit card. It isn't hard
I have seen point systems the same way. If you don't maintain the level of points that upgraded you from beginner status to whatever status is next, they just bump you back down to beginner status, so all your purchases got you nowhere near the rewards you were expecting. Cheap trick and doesn't win you customers, but they don't care
I thought it always worked in these negative ways, which is why I never thought reward miles were worth much, except when you get to use miles for flights paid for by your employer.
"Oh, it's not a comedy." Sad face
As much as I like the research from Adam on other episodes, I think this episode is purely based on broad assumptions, biased points, ignorance of public and consist lot of unrelated linkage. Freq flyer mile rules do not change within the same year and yes recently in the last few years the model has changed from distance based to revenue based. But that doesn't mean there is no value to miles and it's a rip-off. Miles do have value and you can redeem for free tickets and upgrades within the airline. You can also match one airline's status to another airline's similar status level. If you take an airline credit card, you do get lots of miles which in general is good enough for atleast one domestic return ticket. Ofcourse during peak season, ticket prices are high and so are the redeemable miles. As per the credit card fees, yes all major credit card processors charge surcharge anywhere between 1.5% - 4% per transaction but that has nothing to do with airline miles. If you had made an argument (mathematical maybe) that the money one spends on an airline to gain status may not be as worth as always flying on the cheapest ticket, but i think that's way too complex to prove.
Saumya Agarwal United did tremendously devalue their points system when they switched away from miles flown earning points.
Before a transpacific flight could earn you 12k miles. After the change the same flight might net you only 3-4K miles depending on the price you paid.
Making it 3x+ harder to gain elite status.
@@xiaoka status is still based on miles flown for most airlines, the amount of redeemable miles is based on dollars spent
Just a normal dude with multiple free trips flown. No doubt credit cards make it easy to go into debt. As long as you don't act like it's free money to play with it makes sense to use the system to the fullest. Why pay into it without getting any of the benefits like Amir does at the end with the banana?
when you are with your friends but don't understand what's going on 5:01
*Laughs in Metric*
Such a shame that the aviation industry is stuck with a combination of imperial units, except for miles, instead they use nautical miles which are slightly different.
@@duuqnd yeah Nautical miles are based on longitude and latitude which is useful
i've never understood why anyone would do frequent flier programs instead of cashback programs. credit card companies have fixed percentiles, at least with the amazon prime rewards card i have. the annual fee of amazon prime, i get points on everything which i usually use to either buy things i want or christmas gifts at the end of the year, and i just pay my card off regularly so i don't have to worry about interest unless something crazy bad would happen.
There can be flier programs with a better return if you fly often versus cashback. I'm a cash back man but if it gets you more value and you'll use it then why not.
@@Kefka2010 Just like any coupon/discount program, it only saves you money if you were already going to buy it anyway. You fly often? Miles rewards programs might be your best bet. My bank gives 3% cash back on dining vs 1% on regular purchases, and some other tiers I don't remember. Great for people who go out to eat a lot, but I don't. I just use the card for what I need, and pretty much just have it to build my credit history.
@@caniscerulean agreed. Comparing $100 off groceries vs $50 cashback it would seem groceries would be better but if you never eat at home and always eat out then the $50 is the better value.
I don't fly enough to justify frequent flyer and a decent chunk of my travel requires rental cars because it's just a few States worth of travel.
@@Kefka2010 yup, if someone gave me $100 of free groceries, I'd probably waste $75 dollars of it. So a $50 gift card for something that I would spend 50 dollars on anyway would be much more valuable
You could have just put the money money that was so perfect
Adam completely skipped fact that the way to game the system is to get the credit card, use it for everything, and pay it off every month. I took my family of 5 to Europe on free tickets. My card has no annual fee and I pay no interest
Horrible awful advice. Avoid this man like the plague, and avoid credit cards just ad much.
@@Bee_Healthier ? This is great advice. I haven't carried a credit card balance in 20 years. Without paying a dime in interest or fees, all rewards I've gotten over the past 2 decades have basically been free. It just takes discipline. 20 years ago I was a broke college student, but I still only bought things I knew I could pay off immediately.
I think Brandon watches Dave Ramsey....
Brandon Bee slow down Dave Ramsey. Credit is bad for people bad with money
Did you not watch the video? They can devalue those miles and do. Use a cash rewards card.
The real secret is what the heck a "pamplet" is.
Colonel RPG it's a 204 side essay about terms and conditions taht you'll never read.
@@lordbanetheplayer8844 Oh, you mean a pamphlet? Right!
It's a pamphlet.
Not a pamplet.
A pamphlet.
As someone who works for the credit card companies, let me tell you, retail/merchant/airline cards are a massive pain! So many times we see customers complaining about cards they thought had a $0.00 balance, but the airline charged those drinks they ordered on the brand new card rather than the card the customer wanted! And they always carry a higher APR than getting a card directly through the bank, often times 5-10% higher! I don't know if it's the bank raising interest due to higher risk or a premium the airline charges, but they are as annoying for us as they are for the customer.
How cute is Amir?!
Great talent!
Now that's how money flies!
I love how it says that Akron has an international airport XD, wouldn’t that be nice
I don’t know about the rewards miles, but the credit card convenience fees aren’t charged if you pay cash, because the convenience fee is charged not by the credit card company but an electronic transaction company like Moneris.
Answer pay in full, don’t carry a balance, and use points and cash back instead of miles
Flula's Vibranium member rewards plug took me out
That’s the Ontario, CA airport. I’m in it twice a week. UGH.
Thanks for confirming my suspicions. It looked familiar and thought it might be.
The same shenanigans apply to "points" in all industries, and currency for that matter.
A few notes on Card Surcharges:
(1) They apply to debit as well as credit
(2) They are practiced mostly by small businesses
(3) They are less costly than the Treasury Department.
The price is based off processing and equipment fees. As a result, all cards incur the cost a surcharge offsets.

This is too good, I just shared this video with someone who showed interest in the credit card. Hope he actually watches this!!
I don’t know about this. I just booked a round trip to PR on JetBlue with miles for 3 people and I only paid $30 for taxes ($10 per person).
Yeah, he doesn't know how the points and miles game works.
3:26 Wait, Vibranium?
Seriously, can somebody tell me if this applies points and rewards and pre-filled visa/mc? Ty in advance🙂
I don’t know about pre-filled, but having a points and rewards card is fine as long as you never go into debt. The interest rates are higher so if you don’t pay off your balance you end up paying more in interest than you received as a reward. If you plan to go into debt, it is better to use a low interest rate card and even better to take out a loan.
@@spencercase5370
Ty for reply Spencer🙂. No plans to go into debt. Just asking coz my utility co. gifted me a prepaid m/c. Was curious about points after video. 🥧Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
@@mikaylabansie9512 Prepaid cards don't offer any points, only cards which are specifically marketed as reward credit cards. Prepaid cards are essentially just a branded (Visa/MC/etc) debit card to a virtual bank account with the stated initial value, i.e. $100. Once the account is drained, the card is useless, except for the rare card that allows you to reload funds, and they usually charge a reload fee, like Green Dot. I used a Walmart Money Card as a checking account when my credit was too bad to open a real checking account, and they waive monthly fees if you use direct deposit to put in at least $1000 a month. (Several years ago, may have changed their terms since then)

Please further expand?? So all prices are up because of credit card companies? Is there any way to avoid them??
No, you will pay the same prices anyway. It's like a restaurant adding more space and raising prices of the food slightly. You will still pay the same amount regardless if you sit in the new space or not.
Besides, a lot of businesses would lose way more business than the 2.5% of fees they pay to credit card vendors if they didn't accept cards
Weeping for humanity...
yeah the miles expiring before using them is annoying. i had plenty of miles from emirates. and they wanted me to pay if i want to keep the points.
Well, i'm glad i basically never fly.
I fly cheep works well
@@nevokrien95 I fly using miles, works well
This is extremely true. Just credit card rewards in general.
I mean, despite this airline miles are still a better option than most rewards cards as you can get the equivalent of 5% or so in value. This doesn’t even take into account most frequent flyer programs are held by businesses who pass the miles on to their employee for leisure travel so for them it’s free money.
If companies raise prices by 2% to make up for the 2% the CC companie charges... wouldn't that 2% just increase by 2% as well? It grows with the price you're charging. I call BS. What I see mostly is companies just eat the cost of the fee because they get more sales by enabling CC transactions. How many times I've skipped over a restaurant if it was cash only and I had no cash. You eat the 2% fee or get nothing.
Good point. The fee is charged on the transaction and is not a fixed amount.
I think Adam has started to ruin the plot.
If you thought vendors were covering those 2-3% credit card transaction fees for you and not just building it in to the markup of the product, I've got some bad news for you about "Free Shipping".

All you had to do is treat the stewardess like a human being and lay off the sexual harassment that is talked about in the next segment of this video.

I used to be the cash back guy, until I realized how to game the system, and fly only in business and first for less than economy tickets. The whole system is made confusing on purpose, if you can get the gist of it and keep learning, earning and burning points, you will get ahead of the game. Only a few of us actually make it to the other side and that's how this whole game works.
You had to include the Indian 😂
If your IQ is around 80 you may not be able to profit from the point game.

2. Pay full balance every pay day.
