FYI - I'm an Australian who went to college in America and I have maintained that America DOES NOT lack for leaders but it does lack for POLITICAL LEADERSHIP. Admiral McRaven is one of the examples I give others and if you have seen his UoT 2014 Commencement speech you'd know why. Walter Payton is another who I hold in the highest regard and is sadly missed.
If you look through many fields of endeavor Americans have great people and great leaders with 1 exception - Politics.
I actually told a couple of people months ago that my pick as an alternate team for the election was McRaven with Yang as his VP running on an independent ticket.
Just imagine if McRaven had have debated Trump & Biden on leading America forward. I think Biden would have just stepped away and Trump would have embarrassed himself beyond all measure.
Just imagine where America would be right now if McRaven was President Elect (its December 10 - 4 days before the Electoral College votes)

I was once tasked with escorting Saddam to one of his court hearings. The guy whined about EVERYTHING. But the interesting/ ironic thing is that he would have never allowed ISIS or Al Qaeda to operate within Iraq, not for one second. They would have been a threat to his absolute authority and he would have spared no expense to exterminate them. I spent almost 3 of my 21 year military career in Iraq and spoke to dozens of Iraqi citizens who told me plainly that if Saddam would have stayed within the borders of the country and left the Kurds alone he was actually the type of leader that they needed at the time and was preferable to the total chaos that Bush began and Obama continued.

If he would have played well with others and actually became a decent leader than a religious nut case him along with whole of Iraq would have been much better off. Imo but history doesn’t work on retrospect. Ego never let Saddam choose the better path. Playing against USA will leave you in stitches. It’s a war you never wanna start. Unless you are a military superpower please don’t try to fight a war against America , Russia , China or India. It will never end well for you regardless of your resources.

The part about seals saving his life is very interesting. I know a similar story... a sea lion saved the life of a man who jumped off the golden gate bridge in 2000... he kept feeling something nudging his head above water and was later informed by the water rescue team that a sea lion had been keeping his head above water. Dick Van Dyke said that he fell asleep while on a longboard in VA beach one time and floated WAY out to sea... he thought he was going to die, but a group of porpoises pushed him back to shore. This stuff is very interesting!
