I have noticed that quite a few Asian languages have multiple ways of saying things depending on WHOM you are speaking to. I know Korean is like that. One of my favorite books ever is James Clavell's Shogun. It was the first big (1100+ pages) book I ever read. As an adult, I can see the books flaws, but as a young teen I was transported to 16th century Japan and just loved it. Still do. The main protagonist is an Englishman who shipwrecks in Japan and gets involved in all kinds of intrigue. What was great is that the protagonist is taught Japanese throughout the novel by his interpreter and eventual lover and through the repetition of HIS learning, the READER also learns basic Japanese words and phrases. I can recall that the 13 year old me was very proud of myself that I knew some rudimentary Japanese by the books end. haha. Hey, you just need a tiny feather push to reach 10K!! Maybe by the time I wake you'll be there
Yes, Japanese is exactly the same! It’s ridiculously complicated in that sense😂 Thank you for sharing your beautiful memory! I’m happy to know that you were interested in Japanese from a young age☺️
@@zahrasmith4101 To some extent, but look at the first phrase Melissa explains - "Good Morning". In English, you would not need to alter it depending on who you were speaking to. It would be proper regardless if you were speaking to your parents, friends, an elder, or your boss. I know in Korean there are multiple ways of saying the most simple of words --"Hello". In English, "Hello" works for whoever you are speaking to. Not saying one way is better than the other, just taking notice of the differences. :)
@@clash5j "Attention on deck!" Admittedly, not quite the same; but there are a few analogues at other points of the linguistic topological map. But generally speaking the OP's point stands.
@@clash5j "Hello" works for everyone but is also polite/formal. "Hey", "Hi", "Yo", and "What's up/'Sup?" mean the same as "hello" but are much more familiar and casual and sometimes not appropriate to use.

So I've been learning Japanese through duolingo, and I was confused by some of the Japanese writing because they are different on duo. Are there multiple symbols for certain sounds because I know there's hiragana, katakana, and kanji, but are there more ways to write "wa" for example, in just hiragana???
