I showed this video to several people who don't care about roses and they loved it. My husband said, "I guess it doesn't matter if you're interested in the topic or what it is, watching someone who is truly passionate about something is infectious and entertaining to watch".
@@the_gardenerben unfortunately some sorts of roses you recommend are not suitable for the climate I live (((( so mostly I use recommendations for my territory and temperature regime. But your roses are stunning. Wish you all the very best!)))))))
My climate in the US is different but I enjoyed the video very much. Interestingly, Scepter d'Isle is my very, very favorite David Austin and the blooms are the visual equivalent of angels singing. It does not ball for me at all but Happy Child balls terribly here. Lady Emma Hamilton, despite the fabulous color, was my weakest performer and it died this year. I hardly ever kill roses but it was a weakling here. I have several others but Scepter d'Isle is my favorite and it isn't close!
It’s a rose I greatly enjoy to it appears in several of my best of collections including my best for fragrance collection just so you know this is an old video from 2021 the top 20 most recommended roses from myself was refilmed and posted in 2022 to include many more of the new releases from the last few years do you take a look at that one if it’s of interest to you and I created a best for a Drought tolerant selection which may be more of interest to you with your current climate
Wow! These Austins are drop-dead gorgeous! Glad to see the company taking measures to improve the shrub architecture, stronger stems and disease resistance on the newer releases and garden varieties 🌹
I was somewhat disepointed before you brought princess Alexandra of Kent to stage. I New you would! You made me lol🤩 ❤️👏🏻 Thank you for your top 10+! 👍🏻
May I just check that you are aware that this top 10 is now replaced by a new top 20 filmed in June 2022, there was a real shake up at the top so please do look out the new top 20
This is the top 10 of 2021 have you seen the new video for this year with the new varieties added that one has all the varieties listed in the description
Hello Ben, thank you for your great video. We have a natural garden with many David Austin Roses. They are amazing. Last year we got new neighbours on the west side of the garden. So I had to move the fence and all plants. 3 month hard work for us…but this year we can enjoy all of our old plants and 7 of your recommended roses. Country parson is my favorite, best performance in the first year and an amazing scent. Emma Hamilton and Ben Austin have been flowering more than the last years. Best regards Karina
Thank you for this video! I have roses planted: Desdemona, Crown Princess Margareta, Charlotte, Harlow Carr, Charles Darwin, Roald Dahl, Glamis Castle, Tranquillity. Roses freeze to the ground level (I live in climate zone 4a). In the spring they grow and bloom beautifully.
I have a one-yr-old Tess of the Dubersilles and it bloomed last summer for the first time. It is small right now but mighty. I cut some stems and they lasted in a vase almost 6 days with a little sugar in the water (my own science experiment). lol. Let me know how your Alnwick does.
@@Strongerthandirt8695 My Tess grew very well with fewer blossoms and climbed the structure. Had to cut them down a little to accommodate Christmas lights. Quiet happy with it! The Alnwick is in a 20 gal pot and had to put up with aphids and sawflies. It was worth it as we enjoyed an abundance of sweet smelling roses. We are in zone 8b.
Hello Ben! I’m here in dinky Wills Point, Texas. I have 5 acres to play with and boy am I in trouble I want them all! I ordered Roald Dahl standard, Olivia, Gertrude Jekyll and Gabriel Oak. I’m thinking of combining Olivia with Gabriel oak in a pot. I have quite a few antique roses as well Souvenir de la Malmaison climber, Mlle De Sombreuil climber which are two excellent performers here in Texas. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us your beautiful roses. I have to get Emma when she becomes available what a stunner!
I was a bit deflated until you added # 11 😂….So happy that added Princess “Alexandria of Kent” to your list! My first David Austin Rose and I just love it!!
So glad I found your video. It’s exactly what I needed to help me decide which roses I want for my garden. Many thanks 🙏 ( only problem is I want them all !)
Ben, It would be fantastic to see all the David Austin roses that you have in your garden. For those of us who don’t have the space to plant them all would be a great treat😀. I live in Bay Area of California with limited garden space. Have been growing DA roses for over ten years.
I am so happy to see your video. Bought 2 variety of your rose which are growing healthy. I am waiting for October to buy more roses. Your list has given me ideas to choose. Thanks you DA
Hello Ben, thank you for the list. All of these roses are so beautyful. I have a small garden with a mix of Kordes, Mailland, Tantau and David Austin roses. From David Austin are „Munstead Wood“ and „Lady of Shalott“ . Both where planed last october. On my list are: „Scepter d Island“, „Golden Celebration“ and „Eustacia Vye".😍 But „Emily Bronte" is also a beauty and, and, and……………………😟😉
I have Jubilee Celebration and just got it in January. It is currently in bloom with over 20 buds! I am in Southern Arizona and this rose and Abraham Darby perform the best in our heat and strong sun.
Wow...l was thinking of Jubilee Celebration & my friend is growing Abraham Darby in Malaysia hot tropical sun. Any more hot hardy roses that u know of?
I just recently found your videos and we love David Austin roses also. We have found your reviews very helpful. I was wondering if you have any videos dealing with soil, watering and pruning?
I don't know how you ended up on my feed but I'm glad you did! I enjoy your videos and appreciate the info. Somehow, out of all the videos I've seen people showing their DA roses, yours has me seeing the beautiful colors, texture and size of them. It gets me excited! I bought Olivia Austin and Roald Dahl and I look forward to seeing them grow.
That makes me very happy I’m Pleased that you are noticing the true colour form and habit of the roses that I’m talking about it is exactly the reason why I launched my series of reviews originally meant for Instagram, as a gardener I get very annoyed by the post production enhancement of photographs much as I love David Austin they are also guilty of this in their magazines and catalogues and even the videos they post online often they are so heavily filtered I can’t tell the difference between particular rose blooms especially as everybody sees colour slightly differently I never filter enhance or edit any of my videos everything is filmed in one take first time hopefully giving you a very true representation of my thoughts feelings and impressions
Lady Hamilton is absolutely beautiful and definitely in my top 3. My personal favourite is munstead wood because I love deep colours so much. I love both for their scents. I always go for the best fragrance, it is very important to me.
@Ben Hamilton Anderson that's really hard to choose. I think I will go with tradescant because it's one of a kind. The darkest david austin rose with an amazing fragrance. It's not too easy to grow and not easy to buy sadly. I had it once, and it died due to harsh weather conditions, and I just can't replace it because it's out of stock all the time. I miss it a lot.
I bought 5 Princess Alexandra of Kent last year, really looking forward to their flowering, not had that one before. I had about the same quantity as you many years ago, now again have space so building up a collection in our communal garden. I also currently have Roseraie de l’hay, Port Sunlight, Penelope, Shropshire Lass, Cornelia and another yellow one that was already here and I’ve forgotten the name! I only buy scented ones, to me that’s an essential part of these. But I never met a bad DA rose 😊
Thank you for a nice list. I probably have to buy at least some of them for My Swedish Cottage Garden! I´ll promise to publish a video as soon as they start flowering 😀
And that after adding more to my collection and growing them for at least a year the list was reworked in 2022 that is now a top 20 please do take a look before you make your final decisions
Hello Ben, I wonder if you own any of Old DA roses, like Evelyn, Julia, Abraham Darby etc? Could you review those as those are still popular although not available via DA anymore xx
Oh you made me cry !1 I bought Emma Hamilton for my daughter Emma Living in Portugal I had it in a pot She was stunning for 5 yrs then suddenly died so sad ....I have had 32 roses here in Portugal but sadly only two have survived The Claire rose and the German blue veil... Portugal is too hot for English roses
If you feel like having another go with roses, do consider, taking a look at my best for drought and heat collection, the roses that have been doing well with our new blisteringly hot summers temperatures reaching around 33 to 35° here in the UK, which may not be incredibly hot as far as you are concerned, but it’s certainly very abnormal here
Hi Ben, Thanks 👍 for the recommendation ☺️ I bought some French, Japan & English roses to try under Malaysia's hot & dry summer now. My town has a bit of a microclimate as Rawang is in the much cooler Highlands but, our sun ☀️ & rain is unpredictable lately :( l am so worried.
Margie from usa- Ben, so glad to hear your description of each rose. I Love d.a. roses and have really been eyeballing princess anne of kent. I am looking forward to more videos. Thanks!
Thanks for adding princess alexandra of Kent! I just 1 hr ago ordered that and Desdemona. Can you advise on soaking the bare root roses? I'm wondering about water temp and quality
Really interesting to hear your comments Ben and to see the flowers in each case. I love David Austin roses. I have Scepter'd Isle, Princess Alexandra of Kent and Munstead Wood together in a large raised bed; Eustacia Vye and The Mayflower both new this year and in pots; the rambler Lady of the Lake, the Pilgrim, Teasing Georgia and Claire Austin growing alongside a fence; 5 Kew Gardens as a small hedge out front (no thorns to snag passersby!) and 2 others in the back garden one is a small pink climber and the other a large deep red shrub rose whose names I've sadly forgotten! Oh and Emily Brontë how could I forget her?! But a real favourite of mine is Wild Edric - have you come across him? He's a bit like a rugosa rose with cerise flowers that open fully with a really strong scent. He's incredibly robust and free flowering but he is large and packs some pretty vicious thorns so don't put him somewhere where you're going to have to squeeze past him because he will bite! I do love him inspite of that. He's usually first to flower and goes on for months. I've pretty much run out of space now, hence the 2 roses in pots, but your videos are very tempting - maybe I can persuade my husband to reduce the size of his shed!
We have had an unusual amout of water this spring. I've had to spray them for the black spots and pests. My next move is repotting and changing the soil. I just hope it doesn't go from bad to worse. .I actually started off with 2. My dog ate one. 🤦
Fantastic, some really beautiful roses and I’ve not grown one of them! - I love David Austin roses and have grown many different varieties over the years. - but here are some more to try! This is what I love about them!
Loving ALL of your videos on DA roses! While reviewing Princess Alexandra of Kent you mentioned she grows for you as a shrub and a "standard". What is a "standard", pray tell?
You are awesome to watch and we all appreciate your intensity and love for roses. I only have 3 David Austins and only one is in your top ten but it is Lady Emma. The other 2 are Munstead Wood and Boscobel. I am in South Florida so I needed heat resistant types that could hold up to our climate and not ball in the heavy rains and high humidity.
Wow.....l am trying DA roses too but, l am not sure they'll survive the hot N dry summer in tropical Malaysia now. I am also not sure if 'Joy of life' & 'Lady in Red ' are David Austin's roses. Our monsoon is nasty too :( l have seen my friends' roses 🌹 soaked to the skin :( under the torrential rain. What others to try? Thanks.
I started planting David Austin roses this year and your videos are amazing! I got David Oak thanks to you, and already had The Lady Gardener. I am looking for a pink / salmon rose to plant in a container, but I can't decide between Boscobel, Eustacia Vye and Jubilee Celebration. Eustacia Vye seems to be the most recommended due to the amazing flowering and health, but I really go for the multicolored petals
Thank you so much Ben for this fabulous video, very informative. Totally agree with you about PAOK, she is amazing. If I could ask your advice please on a climbing rose for a standard size arch, I was considering St Swithin (I would love Generous Gardener but I think it would be too big) so I'm drawn to St Swithin. I really would like a strong scent and think this would work. If you could help I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks (Tina - Dublin, Ireland)
Your rose videos have been very helpful in helping me narrow down my wish list of David Austin roses. Can you please make a video, testing the vase life of the roses :) I am looking for the roses that are best for cutting. I know the David Austin website has a small list, but I'd love to know if there are others that will last long as a cut flower. Thank you!
I Get asked this question an awful lot and the answer is simply none of the Austins last very well in a vase you’ll be lucky if you get between 12 and 36 hours in Bloom before it drops its petals
@@the_gardenerben Awesome work. Totally in love with David Austin roses. I’m British, but growing them (for the first time/beginner) in New Zealand. LD Braithwaite is gorgeous! 🌹 But I love them all.

@@christieburchell4335 I Would be inclined to just leave it be for a while
@@the_gardenerben thank you for taking the time to give me some good advise.
I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Fantastic, some really beautiful roses and I’ve not grown one of them! - I love David Austin roses and have grown many different varieties over the years. - but here are some more to try! This is what I love about them!
Love you ... Thank you so much
Loving ALL of your videos on DA roses! While reviewing Princess Alexandra of Kent you mentioned she grows for you as a shrub and a "standard". What is a "standard", pray tell?
Often called a tree rose a standard rose is one crafted with a stem
@@the_gardenerben Thank you, Lovey.
That’s very kind of you to say - thank you
Wow.....l am trying DA roses too but, l am not sure they'll survive the hot N dry summer in tropical Malaysia now.
I am also not sure if 'Joy of life' & 'Lady in Red ' are David Austin's roses. Our monsoon is nasty too :( l have seen my friends' roses 🌹 soaked to the skin :( under the torrential rain.
What others to try?Thanks.
Could you give a review of Gabriel Oak and Munstead Wood please. Why didn’t they make the top 10 or 15?
Very inspiring. Many thanks from Holland.
Eustacia vye is the best choice it’s a brilliant
Thank you so much Ben for this fabulous video, very informative. Totally agree with you about PAOK, she is amazing. If I could ask your advice please on a climbing rose for a standard size arch, I was considering St Swithin (I would love Generous Gardener but I think it would be too big) so I'm drawn to St Swithin. I really would like a strong scent and think this would work. If you could help I'd really appreciate it. Many thanks (Tina - Dublin, Ireland)
What about Young Lycedas? No mention of her sadly. Your thoughts please Ben?
Your rose videos have been very helpful in helping me narrow down my wish list of David Austin roses. Can you please make a video, testing the vase life of the roses :) I am looking for the roses that are best for cutting. I know the David Austin website has a small list, but I'd love to know if there are others that will last long as a cut flower. Thank you!
I Get asked this question an awful lot and the answer is simply none of the Austins last very well in a vase you’ll be lucky if you get between 12 and 36 hours in Bloom before it drops its petals
@@the_gardenerben That's too bad :( Thank you.
I have nearly made your top 10 well 11 lol except for Crown Princess Margareta i dont have room for that stunning rose
but Jude… love your garden and your advice! Cheers:)
I just ordered some golden celebration cuttings. I think the golden will pair well with my bottlebrush.
Loved this thank you!! 😃🌹
Glad you enjoyed it 💚there’s another 30 roses I need to review this coming June there’s going to be quite a shuffle around in the top 10
@@the_gardenerben Awesome work. Totally in love with David Austin roses. I’m British, but growing them (for the first time/beginner) in New Zealand. LD Braithwaite is gorgeous! 🌹 But I love them all.
