i am 61 now. born in 57. watched this movie probably one year after it first came out on TV circa 65 or so. I remember my Dad laughing at this and other scenes in the film. Dad and I pretty much were entirely different personalities and had almost nothing in common. But we did agree on things like this movie. If my Dad was the one that got me to appreciate things like this, well hats off to him and thanks
The supporting actor in this scene is one of Britain's finest: Graham Stark. He plays the role of underling or second banana to perfection. You might remember him from Alfie, when he adopted Michael Caine's son as a way to get married. In that film as in this, Stark's reticence makes the star shine ever more brightly.
Sellers should have kept Hercule as his police side kick in his Clouseau movies. They had great chemistry and Hercule was funny without saying anything.
only partially visible at the left of the screen in this scene is a photo of Clouseau receiving a medal from DeGaulle. One of my favorite easter eggs in the film
Not only is the dialogue very very funny, but Hercule's resigned deadpan acceptance of Clouseau makes it even funnier. The icing on the cake is how lucky they got with the bounce of the pointing stick's broken end. Hilarious!!!
Yes, but we must give the due credit to those supporting actors around him whose acts are not only creative but difficult in that their often dumbfoundedness, the act that they must proportionally project, is a creative genius in and of itself so that the naturally humourous act of seller is much more magnified!
Gosh as I near the end of my 40 + years of working in the engineering field, I see people reason so oddly as this more often than I would every have believed. Great great scene. The look on Hercule as he knows what is coming is priceless
@@emansnas Humour is a personal taste, pointless to argue. But certain truths, how? When they first meet, Clouseau questions Hercule about the latter's background in police work. It turns out that Hercule's father, grandfather, great-grand father, and other family have been detectives and gendarmes in Paris since the time of the Revolution, and that earlier generations had been guards, men-at-arms, and security men serving the barons and dukes in the Paris region from the late middle ages onward. "And prior to that?", Clouseau asks. "Uh, farmers, I suppose", replies Hercule. "Ahh, so the little baby comes to Clouseau for his lesson" replies the distinguished Chief Inspector.
"A Shot in the Dark" is one of the funniest movies of all-time, and by far the best of the Pink Panther movies. Co-written by William Peter Blatty, who went on the write the novel "The Exorcist" seven years later. 60 years after its release, it remains just as hilarious today.
Exactly, after Clouseau broke his pointing stick and then kinda stumbles over his words right after. I'll never know how he kept it together. Brilliant!!!

I thought the scene was funny when I first saw it back in the 60s, and as I got older it got funnier. I swear 1/2 of my bosses reason like clouseau does. I have the same expression as Hercule because I know that no matter what the facts or past results are, my boss will reason irratinally
Sellers' accent as 'Insp. Clouseau' evolved over time, becoming increasingly incomprehensible 🤣 Not to spoil the entire Pink Panther saga, but in reality, there was just one major character who was behind most of the cases his subordinate was assigned to solve. Just look for the twitchy eyelid! 😂
Having been in the theatre 'mode' myself - I know how difficult it is to avoid what is called 'corpsing' - laughing out of character - and it's blatant these two are on the knife edge of escaping from it - if it was in the theatre they couldn't afford retakes - so accurate serious acting could have made this scene far more credible . . .
Great Clips but do us all a favor and get rid of the loud trumpet bang at the end of each clip. Really annoying and your levels are obviously incorrect.
I like Graham Stark great character actor definitely added to the comic chemistry to these movies I give Hercule credit for with standing Clouseau's arrogant side
After he breaks his pointing stick how they both don't go head first into a well of hysterical laughter is beyond me. And to keep the scene going with what Peter Sellers says next is pure genius.
Poor hercule what he went through dealing with Clouseau he might have been a better inspector then Clouseau but without Clouseau it wouldn't be entertaining
Was the stick breaking planned? I believe it wasn't just based on the other actor struggling to keep a straight face and Sellers stammering over his lines.
What little I saw of Steve Martin's Clouseau was enough for me to avoid the first movie and regret that a second was made. While watching the movie, "Chocolat", I thought that Alfredo Molina in his character of the mayor in the movie was one step away from nailing Clouseau. Kevin Klein (who was in Steve Martin's version) would also have been a better Clouseau than Martin.
... 1:50 .." DON't be ridiculous. Would you kill somebody who tore your dress off? " ... It is funny because he assumes girl brains are the same as boy brains. Poorly made video. Loud horns are beginning and end and you have lower the videos ever time bc the horns are too loud and the video itself is too low compared to loud horns at thd beginning and end
The more I watch Seller to more I respect the man. To do the whole scene with a straight face and without a single cut is really something.
What about the other guy who has to stand there with a straight face?
@@canuckprogressive.3435 He knows he will get beaten with the pointing stick - so his face is a mixture of apprehension and fear.

This movie is so much better than the later Clouseau pictures - Hercule made these scenes funnier than just watching Sellers antics
It's pretty amazing when you realize this scene lasted over 2 minutes without any cuts. They filmed this from start to finish perfectly.
' He beat her!'
' He was Spanish! '...like that's an alibi and an obvious trait of Spanish men's character:) Priceless stuff!
It is, isn't it? They tear their dresses off and beat them, and get hot hot love in return!

Indeed!!
And he was Peter's closest friend.
Sellers should have kept Hercule as his police side kick in his Clouseau movies. They had great chemistry and Hercule was funny without saying anything.
Cato was pretty hilarious, but under used.
only partially visible at the left of the screen in this scene is a photo of Clouseau receiving a medal from DeGaulle. One of my favorite easter eggs in the film
My favourite Clouseau scene ... though a lot of that is down to Hercule's long-suffering demeanour .
Today, just replace Maria with Hillary and picture FBI Director Comey as Clouseau. "Facts!"
@@heartrenderer05 Never mind your American political bulshit.
Graham Stark's face has it built in... :-)

It's indeed sheer perfection but I wouldn't be surprised that it wasn't a coincidence and the bounce was actually carefully prepared.
"You fool! You've broken my pointing stick, I have nothing to point with now!"

Peter sellers is awesome, FACT!.

Clouseau calls him an idiot. 🤣
Genius pure Genius!!! Sellers is remarkable as Clouseau!!!!!
My Dad turned me on to these films when I was a boy. We laughed our asses off watching these.

in these movies there is actually a story and a plot, but it always seems to take a back seat to peter sellers, and i’m totally fine with it

I'm pretty sure that was from the Steve Martin Pink panther.

Too bad about the incredibly loud fanfare. Twice per video, too. That's really worth correcting, even if it's a lot of trouble.
Completely agree. Its too loud and overbearing. As soon as i see the title card, I ff.
Funny thing is he was right the whole time, he's always right.
Yes funny
I love that his instinct is fueled by being smitten with her.

How could that other actor stand there and not DIE LAUGHING... how could you even be on set, watching and not just be giggling out of control?
the outtakes are great
That floor plan on the chalkboard and Clouseau's drawing skills LOL..

Graham Stark played so many different parts in all Panther movies and in most Blake Edwards movies.
