The Prophetic Monarchy

  • Stephen M. Veazey, the 8th prophet and president of Community of Christ, announced a date for his retirement and subsequently has been placed on an extended medical leave of absence. The church has been engaged in a worldwide discernment process to determine who will be called as his successor. For the John Whitmer Historical Association’s “Wallace B. Smith Lecture,” in April of 2023, John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place traced the historical background of the “prophetic monarchy” in the Latter Day Saint movement, considered the present state of affairs, and called for future reforms. Hamer looks at the 1844 succession crisis following the death of church founder, Joseph Smith Jr., through the lens of monarchy, arguing that Brigham Young and Joseph Smith III can best be understood as a “usurper” and a “pretender,” respectively, to the prophetic throne. In this November lecture, Hamer will update his analysis in light of changes to the succession process announced due to President Veazey’s medical leave and also after the death of Prophet Emeritus Wallace B. Smith. The lecture will be livestreamed free to the public with donations for the John Whitmer Historical Association welcome.

This is a genuine prophetic revelation: John Hamer should be the next president of your church.

James Ii was not "The Old Pretender"; James II was the father of "The Old Pretender", and grandfather of "The Young Pretender", the bonny Prince Charles.

How did Grant McMurray "violate LGBTQ policies"? Marriage and/or Ordination? I just watched the end of this lecture. Thank you so much for answering so many questions I have had about the church and LGBTQ+ community that made no sense...it feels so good to know that the injustice I have seen in the church is real and now know we have to work to change it...again, thank you so much....

President/Prophet Grant McMurray had quietly allowed for ordinations of lesbian and gay members of the church to priesthood offices within local congregations, contrary to the official Standing High Council policy from the 1980s not allowing for ordination of self identifying LGBT people who may or may not have been in relationships with partners. By 2002 though Grant's first presidency announced a full moratorium on allowring for further ordinations to appease more conservative members who were among the most generous tithe paying members. This remained in place after Grant's unexpected resignation in 2005 until his successor Steve Veazey allowed for LGBT ordinations and marriages with the adoption of Doctrine and Covenants section 164 verses 5-7

I grew up in the Young church and it is quite interesting to hear this perspective and to learn a little about the eastern church. I don't believe in the visions revelations and scriptures of Joseph Smith Junior. My hope is that religions will progress in knowledge and leave behind that which not true. Perhaps not because some prophet said it isn't true but because the knowledge of the world had surpassed that of a church. Spiritual connections are not necessarily blocked by fable and myth. Many of us have those spiritual connection despite having believed in false things.

1:34:32 It's interesting that you mentioned The Great Depression earlier, then you mention 20 years. The world will be facing a crisis of enormous proportions within a few years, and in 2031, after 2000 years, on the eve of Armageddon, Jesus Christ will return and fulfill his role as The Messiah. God bless your church in her efforts to prepare for the upheaval on every front.

Historical and literary analysis has shown that biblical "prophecy of the future" is written after the fact. It's a literary endeavor. Any concrete predictions of the future are the words of man, not of God.

@@theleakyprophet That is completely incorrect. I detail the prophecy of Daniel here in conjunction with The-Messiah but one can also consider Daniel with respect to the Beast prophesy in conjunction with Revelation, or Esther and the related literature from the B. Talmud. These are the most obvious detailed prophesies. Others are the advent of Mohammad in Deut.18 and 33, or the return of bani Israel which has been partially fulfilled since 1948. One could draw a longer list if required.
The central thesis of Mark is Daniel. Jeff Cate's essay from the 2017 Birmingham Colloquium is essential reading in this case. He sent it to me free on request.
