great video, I ordered a five 5-Tiered plant stand with planter boxes, I have a very sunny east facing windows, (a lot of light) I'm going to start my seedlings in. (I live in Ohio snow snow snow) I do have a grow-light I can hang if needed. This is my first time trying gardening inside. Will start with lettuce and some herbs. My hubby is working on a hoop style greenhouse (unfortunately it wont ne heated) but I feel blessed having a greenhouse. we have to count our blessings.
While you’re growing lettuce indoors in spite of your winter, I’m doing it in spite of my summer. I always crave salad greens the most at the time they won’t grow here in the desert, so as my last bit of garden lettuce is about to bolt I’m getting ready to grow some indoors this summer. I like the idea of indoor peas too. I’ll checkout that variety. Thank you.
Hi here to Watch you sow the seeds. So relaxing love to garden especially when you can feed yourself from your own land. And have more knowledge about what you're eating because you grew it yourself.💟
Hi my friend, Your lettuce looks so healthy. I started my lettuce indoors a week ago and they are finally sprouting. They usually sprout 4 days and I used heating mat. Hopefully they keep growing and the rest of my seeds I grew. My basils and parsley are growing though. Ready for them to transplant soon. Have a good the rest of the week. Salamat for sharing this video.
I haven't started my seeds indoor, but I grew some fava greens. It turned out great. I have been harvesting fava greens couple of times already. Our weather was warming 2 weeks ago and now its back to freezing temperatures in the morning and at night. I can't wait to grow new seeds I ordered online. Thanks for the information on this video.
Yes the weather is shifting back and forth here also. Make sure to wait to plant out after the danger of frost has passed. Have a great day and Salamat! 😍
Nice video as always, Misilla! I'll try growing lettuce from seeds first time this spring, I always grew lettuce from scraps! Btw if you want a more fancier lettuce go for 'purple colored lettuce' I grew it from scraps of kitchen aswell but it bloomed beautifully and I even left a few to flower!
Hello! I actually ordered the freckles lettuce, looks neat! Thanks for the suggestion! Love regrowing scraps too, that how I get freed seeds from store bought produce! Did you save the seeds from your lettuce? 😀

I have tried and tried to grow lettuce - of various types- indoors and they never get larger than Microgreen size. I’ve tried different soil types, have bought huge pots. No matter what I tried or did they never fully grew. It’s the one thing I wanted to grow indoors. Microgreens I can do well and plentiful.
Wonderful1 Awesome job sista Misilla. Love growing our own lettuce especially with all the salmonella we get every year across the usa. And now that so much of our store bought lettuce is fake plastic this is and has always been the way to grow it (right indoors). Just one last note: We stop growing lettuce outdoors since the rooftop terrace. A if not most of our leafy greens are grown indoors. Thanks again Missila for the wonderful content and tutorial.
Lettuce at the store is plastic?? I haven't heard that before. The lettuce we buy rots after a few days, so maybe it depends where everyone lives? That's really horrible for you, I'm glad you're more independent and growing your own instead of taking the risk and eating it. I have moved, a few years ago I was in a big city, I didn't eat or trust the 'food' at Walmart, grey ground beef with bones and cheese that didn't melt, didn't buy lettuce at the time, and now I'm curious if it is plastic there.
Thanks for sharing, Misilla. I have been considering picking up some of those Led lights for my growing rack, but 5 shelves at 4 feet wide would be costly. Yours are growing nice. Many blessings.
You’re welcome Jim! You can set it up on a counter like I have? Wonder if you can suspend the light on a DIY PVC stand, more cost effective and place your pots or trays on the floor.
Thanks for the great video ..awesome ...and I love my grow lights it has grown alot for me and I just started Cilantro and spinach....was thinking of purchasing another grow light from hidden harvest
Hi Anisha! Good to hear from you as glad to hear you’re having a nice start to the new season! Love cilantro and spinach! Yes these lights are excellent and has help saved on energy!
I saw that fungus gnat flying by your light. They are just crazy in my indoor lettuce. Have used a fly sticky strip and it is almost black from little buggers
You can kill the fungus gnats by using any of these three things. Water and spray with Chamomile Tea, sprinkle cinnamon on top of the dirt or work some into the surface layer. Also you can do the same with DE = Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. You can also water with the tea and put a layer of cinnamon or DE on top. You will need to do this every 3 weeks for a few weeks.
Look up Vinegar traps. They are very effective. * (forgot to mention) the vinegar/sugar/dishsoap will draw fungus gnats, so I'd set them near but not next to your plants or mushrooms.
Pour boiling hot water over ALL new soil before you plant in it. It kills the eggs and larvae of the knats. Do not leave the dirt sitting in the water, use drainage. Of course this is done prior to planting. Lastly, allow plenty of time for the soil to dry out if it is too wet or it is too hot. Then you can plant as usual. Happy growing 😊
Thanks. Your guidance on indoor soil (3 parts cocoa coir, 1 part worm castings) particularly helpful. Any additional fertilization over the winter? How long can you expect the lettuce to last when using grow lights? I'm looking for ways to grow lettuce over the winter (Iowa Zone 5a). Compared to home grown, the store-bought stuff is like eating animal fodder. In other words, no comparison. FYI, you might try Red Sails lettuce. It's a quicker grow than other varieties I've tried, but also quicker to bolt. Nice to be harvesting Red Sails while the other varieties are still getting under way, but it's also nice to be eating Black Seeded Simpson and Oak Leaf when the Red Sails have already gone to seed. Cheers.
Hi Pierre, I apologize for my delayed response. I hope all is going well with your lettuce crops. In addition to worm castings, I add a little bit of worm casting extract to the water once every two weeks, but you can use any liquid fertilizer you prefer.
Hi Evelyn, Glad you enjoyed. I apologize for my delayed responce. You can space them out about 3- 4 inches apart for leaf lettuces. For romaine and other heading varieties, it's best to give them at least 8 inches or more of space. Thanks for watching! Misilla
Ok when you’re ready to harvest, you just cut the out pieces and it will keep growing correct? Just clarifying bc I watched another video and they said you’d hace to place seeds again
You got some awesome tools. Hey, can you tell me where you got that miniature auger you used with you're power tool to plant your garlic? I can't find anything like that around here. I used a wood drill bit but the largest I could find was 1 1/2", it didn't do as good but it worked.
Hi lettuce is an annual crop and can be sowed every two weeks for a continuous harvest through winter. Depending on variety, lettuce matures between 45 to 100 days.
Is it necessary to thin seeds when started off in cells? I've got 3 per cell but not sure if I can plant out as they are or if they needed thinned to 1? Thank you
Hi, you can thin them out and pace them properly so they grow bigger or grow them closely known as intensive gardening and harvest with the cut and come again method.
Hi Misilla! I also live in Washington. I started some spinach and mesclun greens outside and they seem to be doing well. Can I move my seeds that haven’t yet germinated outside and vice versa?
Hi Samantha, That’s great, it must be warming up where you are already! If they haven’t germinated, sure you can move them out now...it will be pretty winter sowing. Since it’s colder out, they most likely may not sprout as quick. You can place a plastic container with holes like a miniature greenhouse which will keep them slightly warmer than the outdoor temperature. Have a good night! Thanks for watching!
Hi, i was reading about the distance between plants and in general i got the info that should be about 4 inches apart. you planted quite colose together, it seems about 2 inches a part. did u see any problem with this? i think is much better to save space by compacting them as you did. thanks
Hi, Yes the general spacing for leaf lettuce is 4 to 6 inches apart, but they can be planted closely together and harvest with the cut and come again method. Here is a short video I uploaded on Instagram that shows intensive planting with lettuce: instagram.com/reel/CO-t03pFYvP/? Thanks for watching! Misilla
I have to know something! With lettuce diversity mixes and mesclun should you thin them out and transplant them? Most people let them grow in trays close to each other and they end up small. I want to see if I can get bigger lettuce plants but I’m not sure if lettuce mixes allow for that?
I always have issues of slow growth in soil when indoors compared to hydroponic. I think mainly bc they start to root rot. Lack of air circulation? In soil indoors I water one time after transferring seedlings to larger pot and the soil never dries.
Hi Tim this LED panel costs about $5 per month when I calculated it two years ago. It is left on for about 8 to 10 hours daily,. Unfortunately, this brand is no longer available as their business closed last year.
Hi Sean, If you successive plant/sow seeds every two weeks you can have continuous harvests. You can also try growing microgreens, they can be harvested within 7-14 days or so. Just plant the seeds weekly for a continued supply. I'll be uploading a video on this again soon.
Are all your lettuces mostly growing in 1 gallon containers? You said they are 6" in diameter, which would be a gallon container, but some appear larger in the video. Are you indeed growing 2-3 plants in a gallon container?
Hi Daniel, Yes the black ones are one gallon, but I believe some of the larger ones are 2-3 gallons. I grew 3 per 1-gallon pot and we picked them as young greens. If you'd like them to mature especially the heading varieties, they should be planted individually. Thanks for watching!

Hi lettuce is an annual crop and can be sowed every two weeks for a continuous harvest through winter. Depending on variety, lettuce matures between 45 to 100 days.
If you allow a few plants go to seed they will be acclimated to your climate and are generally more hardy and resilient.

Hi yes, you can plant, thin and space them out properly and they should grow to their mature size as long as they get nutrients, water and light.

Yes we do, but I try to let the water sit our overnight so hopefully the chlorine dissapates.
I always have issues of slow growth in soil when indoors compared to hydroponic. I think mainly bc they start to root rot. Lack of air circulation? In soil indoors I water one time after transferring seedlings to larger pot and the soil never dries.
Yes, waterlogged soil and poor ventilation. Make sure the soil drains well. Yes, a larger pot has a bigger area so it retains moisture longer.
How often do you water indoor lettuce?
Hi! About every 3 days, it will depend on the growing environment. You can check the top inch or two of the soil, if it’s dry to touch you can water.
