great video, I ordered a five 5-Tiered plant stand with planter boxes, I have a very sunny east facing windows, (a lot of light) I'm going to start my seedlings in. (I live in Ohio snow snow snow) I do have a grow-light I can hang if needed. This is my first time trying gardening inside. Will start with lettuce and some herbs. My hubby is working on a hoop style greenhouse (unfortunately it wont ne heated) but I feel blessed having a greenhouse. we have to count our blessings.

While you’re growing lettuce indoors in spite of your winter, I’m doing it in spite of my summer.
I always crave salad greens the most at the time they won’t grow here in the desert, so as my last bit of garden lettuce is about to bolt I’m getting ready to grow some indoors this summer.
I like the idea of indoor peas too. I’ll checkout that variety. Thank you.

Hopefully they keep growing and the rest of my seeds I grew. My basils and parsley are growing though. Ready for them to transplant soon. Have a good the rest of the week. No matter what I tried or did they never fully grew. It’s the one thing I wanted to grow indoors. Microgreens I can do well and plentiful.

Wonderful1 Awesome job sista Misilla. Love growing our own lettuce especially with all the salmonella we get every year across the usa. And now that so much of our store bought lettuce is fake plastic this is and has always been the way to grow it (right indoors). Just one last note: We stop growing lettuce outdoors since the rooftop terrace. A if not most of our leafy greens are grown indoors. Thanks again Missila for the wonderful content and tutorial.

Lettuce at the store is plastic?? I haven't heard that before. The lettuce we buy rots after a few days, so maybe it depends where everyone lives? That's really horrible for you, I'm glad you're more independent and growing your own instead of taking the risk and eating it. I have moved, a few years ago I was in a big city, I didn't eat or trust the 'food' at Walmart, grey ground beef with bones and cheese that didn't melt, didn't buy lettuce at the time, and now I'm curious if it is plastic there.

    • @dawns.2492

You can kill the fungus gnats by using any of these three things. Water and spray with Chamomile Tea, sprinkle cinnamon on top of the dirt or work some into the surface layer. Also you can do the same with DE = Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. You can also water with the tea and put a layer of cinnamon or DE on top. You will need to do this every 3 weeks for a few weeks.

Pour boiling hot water over ALL new soil before you plant in it. It kills the eggs and larvae of the knats. Do not leave the dirt sitting in the water, use drainage. Of course this is done prior to planting. Lastly, allow plenty of time for the soil to dry out if it is too wet or it is too hot. Then you can plant as usual. Happy growing 😊

Thanks. Your guidance on indoor soil (3 parts cocoa coir, 1 part worm castings) particularly helpful. Any additional fertilization over the winter? How long can you expect the lettuce to last when using grow lights? I'm looking for ways to grow lettuce over the winter (Iowa Zone 5a). Compared to home grown, the store-bought stuff is like eating animal fodder. In other words, no comparison. FYI, you might try Red Sails lettuce. It's a quicker grow than other varieties I've tried, but also quicker to bolt. Nice to be harvesting Red Sails while the other varieties are still getting under way, but it's also nice to be eating Black Seeded Simpson and Oak Leaf when the Red Sails have already gone to seed. Cheers.

Hi Samantha, That’s great, it must be warming up where you are already! If they haven’t germinated, sure you can move them out now...it will be pretty winter sowing. Since it’s colder out, they most likely may not sprout as quick. You can place a plastic container with holes like a miniature greenhouse which will keep them slightly warmer than the outdoor temperature. Have a good night! Thanks for watching!
