Joy Division we’re originally called Warsaw then changed their name to Joy Division which was also the name of a nazi sexual slavery wing! They later went on to form New Order who released the biggest selling 12” Vinyl of all time Blue Monday, because of the materials used on the sleeve the record company actually lost money on each copy sold, they sold around 3m copies!!

Rock music is a very broad church. It ranges from the psychedelia of mid-60s Beatles and the orchestral of the Moody Blues to the head-banging of bands like Black Sabbath, with glam, progressive and punk, amongst others in between. It doesn't have to all be loud, dissonant and unintelligible. The very best rock music is thought-provoking, lyric and musically pleasing. Like I said, it is a very broad church and there is room for everyone inside.

You have to give 'Show Must Go On a full listen if you have the chance :) Freddie performed it when he was dying of aids and gave such a powerful vocal performance just a few months before he died. Queen in general is a must listen. Such musical diversity and Freddie Mercury is definately one of best vocalists in history :)

About Arctic Monkeys only having one sound; although for some albums that is true, their third ('Humbug') and their last ('Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino') both have a different vibe to it, especially their last one.
Their most popular album is by far 'AM' (the black and white wiggly lined cover), although their first one ('Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not') is still the best selling debut album in British music history.
I definitely would recommend a deep dive into their career, their first album recently celebrated its sixteenth anniversary so they have been going for a while now and their new album is said to come out this year as well!
    Greetings from Belgium!

  • @joshcairo8480

Muse are so underrated, their strength is in a sound that always changes. They've done rock, they've done pop, they've done techno, they've done metal. A bit of everything, always pursuing new sounds. It's impossible to 'get' Muse from just one or two songs, but they're well worth checking out - their new single Won't Stand Down is fantastic, with a creepy music video too.
I was lucky enough to see them live in Spain back in 2016. They headlined a festival there, and dedicated their performance of their song The Globalist to David Bowie, who had died the same year. It was phenomenal!

Back in the day we used to read music magazines and go to record shops to check out the new singles and albums. People put much effort into finding the good stuff. And there was always the radio. Used to smile as a kid when my dad listened to golden oldies that way and I played rock tapes (Bowie, Sweet, Hendrix, E.L.O) in my cassette player. Now I spin the Ella, Sarah, Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Tom Jones and many other jazz and similar LPs myself . . .

At least you started this long journey into British music, I hope you realize just how many important bands come from there. I'd even say that rock music originated there. Artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, Queen, David Bowie or Pink Floyd laid the foundation for rock music all around the world, even many American rock artist are heavily influenced by them. And it's funny that you dislike folk music, because that's actually the origins of American rock. Folk singers like Pete Seeger or Woody Guthrie influenced artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel or Tom Petty who were/are some important artists themselves and influenced generations who came after them.
I hope you continue this journey and never lose the interest. The more you discover the more you'll probably connect some dots, understand the musical evolution and find things out.

Humbug is the best Arctic Monkeys album, it is a really great experience especially if you like creative lyrics. AM is probably a little easier to get into since it has more pop than the rest.
The list included 505 by Arctic Monkeys, and I know you said that you can judge a song by a few seconds, please consider 505 as an exception because there is a really big build up to that one part.

The Beatles were giant fans of Motown music. They covered tons of it on their early albums. They covered “Please Mr. Postman” on their second album.
Most of rock and roll can be traced to inspiration from Motown and blues music.
Also to my knowledge, the Beatles didn’t really do any drugs until the mid 60s when they met Bob Dylan who gave them their first joint lol.

You should check up a British preformance artist with a single hit in the 60s, today almost forgotten, with an immense impact on the coming hard rock and later metal. His name (he is still alive) is Arthur Brown. Under the name The crazy world of Arthur Brown and with the song Fire he changed the limits for what is possible within "popular music".
But one of the most important musician and composer of the 20th century was American: Frank Zappa.

Derek and the Dominoes (Layla)- Eric Clapton and different friends.
Clapton may not be God but he's part of the holy trinity of Clapton,Mark Knopfler and Dave Gilmour (Dire Straits and Pink Floyd)
The Rolling Stones, along with The Who and Black Sabbath, are the quintessential Sex,drugs and Rock'n'roll- sometimes all at the same time.

I dunno about top Brit bands but they are definitely interesting and deserve more fans. They are like a mashup of the stranglers,Iggy pop, b52’s and joy division imho with a pinch of bob dylan

I'm also waiting for The Cranberries. I know they're Irish but need to be on that list.
