New bikes are super sick but for 800 bucks you could get an old steel hardtail have someone rebuild the fork and have a pretty damn good time. Or you could buy for a round 800 bucks a good enough steel bike from State bicycles which honestly for 90% of riders is probably going to be just fine. I try to remind myself sometimes when I'm getting frustrated on the bike that the most fun I probably ever had on a bike was this shitty "Spalding" branded bike that my dad bought me at Sears in 1990. That said, I've also broken frames in half doing dumb shit, so my bike should be at least as strong as I are stupid😂

I have a 2004 Rockhopper Comp that STILL gets the job done. I paid 500 and some change for it brand new 20 years ago. I always upgrade anything that breaks or wears out with something mid-grade. I've shopped around, and every time I look at new bikes I vomit in my mouth a little.

i mean 1000 if you get used with some upgrades and tlc would get you a pretty sweet bike. My friend got a full suspension trek bike with hydraulic disk brakes and good drivetrain for 400. For a 1000 I think you can do pretty well tbh.
Sounds about right tbh years ago my road bike caad 10 105 I think back in 2015 was like 1.6 or something. A big tip though is to understand easy matience gear tuning,chain replacment, cassette changes and u can save your self quite a bit. the markup on those parts vs online retailers can be pretty big.
You can get a pretty good hardtail for that price. Full suspensions though probably start at $2k with crappy low end components, and probably a gimped frame.

I saved up for a year doing paper routes to buy a full chrome mongoose sniper BMX. Was legit the shiniest thing I've ever owned. You could see me a mile away reflecting the sun. My friends always knew when I was heading their way to meet up for a ride.
