This works great. The only thing I changed was I used a square bucket which allowed the elbows to fit flush and I put three elbows on it. Thanks for sharing.
We’ve used the five gallon bucket and watering nipples for our chickens and turkeys for s few years now and the work great. We will have to try a grain feeder like yours. I’m sure it will last many seasons.
Nice. What about a water system that is self maintained? Take a look at this one (automatic self maintained water system for chickens) let me know thanks
I'm going to make both the feeder and waterer. Thanks for the videos! Those expensive waters at the store only last about a year to 18 months for me. Getting tired of buying them!
have a few questions, 1. do you cap the food at night? 2. do the chickens jump on top of buckets, if so how often do you have to clean em? 3. can they still spill any of the food? 4. do you think if the bucket was hanging, it'd work just as well as on a block?
It is a good idea to have this type of chicken feeder !! I have made some in the past with square containers. But stopped using as mice started feeding in the night time.
@@JyjusHomeVideos I plan to use square containers and use caps to close off access to the feeders at night for my meat chickens in the chicken tractors and my laying hens in the coop.
Thanks for the tips. I'm making one now. Here's a friendly tip back from a surgical nurse. Use a clamp when you're cutting PVC or I may see you in the OR. Safety first, cousin. Ok, maybe third... at least.
They have what’s called a street elbow which has a flange on one end only. The other end is like your cut end so u don’t have to cut a flange off of one end.
Of all the chicken feeders I’ve seen, I think this one is the best. Super easy. I’m going to get a square bucket, though and use elbows that I don’t have to cut. How close to the inside bottom of the bucket do you place the elbow?
What any and all of these homemade bulk feeders need are funnels in the centers, to push the feed to the openings, and none will sit wasting in the center of the bucket....just an FYI
I am going in a vacation so i want to do this to be able to put alot of feed i usually have a feding schudale so no mice, will this work better if i use a rectangular sweeter plastic box? i have 7hens
I have both bantams and full size chickens. One of my silkie’s is particularly small. Would it work to do multiple heights so that my RIRs and Silkies can eat from the same feeder?
I trap the mice with regular traps using some preferred foods like peanut butter. No poison for many reasons. Also, I keep the base of the feeder at about chest of chicken height. Finally, I train several chickens as TMIs. Tactical Mouse Interceptors. They are also trained in counter intelligence interrogation methodologies.
I just found your video and would like to make this. I didn't realize there were so many different styles of 90 degree angle pvc pipe! Did you use a street elbow or long sweep elbow?
I have the cup waterers for my chickens, but drink the cup dry and dont peck to get more water. I'm guessing they haven't figured it out how to get it. I'm thinking about getting rid of them, but I see that so many people have them. What am i doing wrong?

Brittany Shaw we used a long pvc pipe put 3 nipples on it and connected it to a large barrel with a wire mesh top so rain fills it up
Definitely a good investment.
Chickens always love to spill feed.
This feeder is super easy to make, and very inexpensive. Hope this helps you out
Thank you so much!!!! I was about to spend a fortune on feeders!!!

It has worked well
It is really good other than the trouble with those mice around

Need to get a good ole barn cat
You should be putting an end, cap on the holes at night...every feeder would have mice issuesif you dont control access.
well crafted.... the little guys are gettin big

Have you tried this with 45 degree elbows? I see alot of others use the 45 but I like this 90 as well. Looks like the chicks access easily!
Thank you for the added tip!
@@HomeOwnerRepair I did it as you did with the 90s and it works perfectly!

If you buy a "street" elbow, there's no need to cut off one end, it's already flush.
Thanks for the added tip.
Thanks great idea 😁

This is soooo easy. It put the food on auto pilot for a while
I have both bantams and full size chickens. One of my silkie’s is particularly small. Would it work to do multiple heights so that my RIRs and Silkies can eat from the same feeder?
We had a few different birds eating from this setup they seemed to do well. Hope this helps you out.
Does the glue make the attached pvc pipe waterproof? Will this set up work in the rain?
Yes the glue is made for PVC pipe. This method will keep the food dry. Hope this helps you out.
It wouldn't hurt to run a ring of silicone caulk around the outside, either. That would ensure water tightness.
great video bro
You're welcome. This feeder setup works awesome
This would not fit in the coop so is it ok to put outside?
If they can reach it yeah it should be.
How many broilers do you think could eat from one bucket ?Thanks
I have six hens eating from this set-up, it's perfect. Food lasts about three weeks in bucket. I give them fresh water every couple of days
Thanks
OK😍👏👏👏👏👍😯😯😯👌

I'm wondering if the chicken can finish all the feed down to the bottom?
I typically don't let it get that low..always feed them fresh food.
Any ideas how to keep field mice out/ away from it? Other than closing the it up
I'm not sure. I never had an issue with them. Maybe someone will chime in that had an issue with them.
I trap the mice with regular traps using some preferred foods like peanut butter. No poison for many reasons. Also, I keep the base of the feeder at about chest of chicken height. You could probably use a street elbow so that you don't have to cut an end off.
@@HomeOwnerRepair thanks! Is 3 in really big enough for their heads? I was thinking about a 4 in. Any pros or cons to that?

Mine did the same thing and they figured it out after a few days
Why is it necessary to cut the other end off the PVC tube?
so it fits through the hole

Will the feed remain dry inside during the wet months of the year because of the rain? I live in the state of Washington! lol
I'm in New Hampshire and it rains more than the sun's out. Mine has stayed dry.

Why bother tracing it out when your hole saw is already the diameter it needs to be and you are just eyeballing the height from the bottom?
