You may have saved my chickens, my good lord. I needed a big bucket of 20 gallons, so my chickens could make it three days home alone. Those cups are what I really needed and if I could, I would send my finest chickens to you as gratitude!
I’m glad it worked out as an option for you. We love them and they’ve performed well over the years. Thanks for watching and appreciate your time spent with us
We have an exchange with our neighbors where we give him all of our leftovers and he gives us eggs. I also help to care for the chickens when they go on vacation. I’m going to make him one of these as a gift. He has those old style ones and they get really nasty and are a pain to clean out and refill.
That’s awesome. Having people you can share help with is great. These work great except for the winter. I haven’t found a way to keep cups from freezing in the winter but it’s great the other 3 seasons.
Love this way of creating a water feeder... As you mentioned, the only downfall is they hop on top of the bucket and poop can drop into the cups... I have an idea... Get a sheet of thin white plastic, cut it to length to create a cone to fit over the bucket lid... Drill some holes and use tie straps to secure the funnel shape... Hope this helps you and others... Might even be nice to do another video of making yours... At 70 I hope I'm not too old to keep up with my first time having chickens... My 6 chicks are 4 weeks old and I'm shocked how fast they are growing...
That would work great. Cone tops definitely eliminate that. I actually had a small traffic cone and stuck that on top for a while and it seemed to eliminate that issue. That’s great you have some chicks going. They really do change quickly in those first 6 or so weeks.
I have been having these cups for well over a year. I finally went to Lowes and got a 25 gallon garbage can and made this. So far so good. I was a bit afraid that the weight of the water would compromise the can but it looks ok for now. Next up, the same can with feed in it. I have had those fittings too........for over a year now...but feed isnt half as bad as dealing with water. I had a self watering system but it froze and I never set it back up., This was much easier
Glad it’s working so far. I’ve seen pictures of lots of people using them like you are so I suspect they’ll hold up just fine. You’re probably like me where there’s just not enough time in the day so things get delayed 😆.
I watched the RentaCoop feeder and waterer video first haha. I think I will order the new cups and make the 5 gallon bucket waterer. It helps to have the larger amount of water when I go out of town for 2-3 days. Little man is such a cutie. Have Dad and son fun. Stay Safe and God Bless.
The cups added to something is certainly the cheapest option. If you get them, I hope you’re pleased. By far the easiest to install in my opinion. 3/8” drill bit should be all you need.
I think you’ll be pleased. After a couple years I finally need to replace 2 cups. It was my fault though that they broke. Luckily it’s as simple as screw one out and screw a spare back in. Hopefully they still throw an extra in and you’ll maybe end up with 8
Thanks for the tip. We’ve actually been keeping an old milk jug full of water and flush them out with that as needed now. Works like a similar concept.
Didn't know about RentaCoop, but I made one of these waterers using the Lil Clucker brand (the big blue ones). They work like a charm. I really like the idea of the cup inserts! Thanks for sharing.
@@RockyCreekHomestead I tried to order the ones you made the video about, but Amazon is sold out so I'm going to try the ones you already had without the fence wire hanger attachement and the cup inserts. Thanks for the video!
I just got mine yesterday and put it together. I can already tell it's going to make my life so much easier. I usually fill the waterer every morning on my way to work. Thank you!
That’s actually a great idea. I’ve done it in chicken tractors that way and it’s worked well. I’m sure I can rig something up similar in the chicken run. Appreciate you bringing this to my attention.
Excellent job on the video and great product review as well. You were very detailed but not overly talkative. We've had chickens now since early 2020/2021. I forget. We've tried several watering and food systems over the years from dog bowls to manipulated water gallon jugs. I recently bought 5-gallon buckets and now I want to convert a trash can into a large watering system. I bought those red nipples with the yellow pecker thingy a year ago off Amazon and most were immediately defective so I stopped using them. However, it's gotten old changing the water multiple times a day not to mention, wasteful as chicken's will scratch and throw dirt into their water bowl. I'll probably make this bucket system in the morning or use our big blue recycling trash can to hold more water if the nipples don't affix to the thin plastic recycling can. Again, kudos on the video and thanks for the introduction to Rent a Coop..
I hope you find them as great as we have. I’ve been using them ever since and I think I’ve replaced 2 cups out of a total of 9 I’m running. 1 was my fault as I dropped the bucket onto a side with a cup which broke it. Luckily I had extras on hand and just unscrewed it and screwed another back in. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences

Thank you for the kind words. I don’t see any reason that the screw lid wouldn’t work. I’d just drill the small hole near the top of the bucket to allow the needed ventilation to prevent vacuuming. Drill into the bucket would hopefully reduce the chance of splitting in the screw top lid. They’re a little more rigid If I’m thinking of the correct type lid. I hope that helps and thanks for watching

These are the only cups i seen that would work for rabbits too cool...they might try to take the clean up cup out depending on how bored your bunny is lol
I was thinking about the vent hole in the top, I have a 2 bucket water filter and it does the same thing. If I don't leave the top loose? Which ain't a problem with it being inside the house, but I have thought about the vent hole and then hot glueing a piece of svreen, pipe svreen, ect. To keep the suction from happening and then you don't have to worry about the insect problem. Imo Thanks for the advice friend.
Thank you for the video ! Good details thanks. Can you please tell me where you get those black chicken's ? Very nice I would like to have theme. Specially the Black with a white mohawk.
The all black chickens are ayam cemanis and they came from a local person who got them from a breeder in North Carolina, unfortunately I don’t have specifics on them. The black chickens with the white feathers on their head are white crested black polish. They can be purchased from most larger hatcheries. These particular ones came from hoovershatchery.com/WhiteCrestedBlackPolish.html
So I reached out to the company about a week ago because many people said the ones I linked were showing unavailable. They said they had the 6 packs on order and should be available in a couple weeks and that the link showing should work once they’re in stock. Their standard cups don’t have the liner so that’s probably all that’s available currently. I use both and both work well. A quick and easy way to clean the standard ones of debris Is a use an old milk jug filled with water and I pour it in the cups flushing out the debris. I do it each morning and works well.
I don’t see where they have that extra cup lining when I look on Amazon. Is that standard now? How do you know if they have the liner cup to take out and easily clean? I need easy as I am not in good health.
I watched this today. Interesting inco. Will look into vor warm weather watering. I live in area where it freezes several months of year. I use a rubber pan for water now. When water freezes, I turn it over and stomp out ice, then refill. Easiest method for me here. What do you suggest for winter months, without using a heating source. I can tell you are from Southern area because of acceent😉. This product , In my opinion, would not work in freezing climate
You’re very accurate in the freezing temps will result in them not working. I as well use the rubber bowls in the winter months. Outside of a heated waterer I honestly don’t of a better option than the rubber bowls. You’re correct too in I’m in the south. Fortunately only about 3 months of the year cause me some freezing issues. I appreciate you watching and sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
I just got some and will get the bucket set up. Why not drill holes higher so the bucket doesn't have to be raised for the cups to be able to fill? Is it to keep debris out better?
I would like you to move the bucket onto a sinder block , then you would keep the water cleaner. now the hight is too close to the ground. That's a source of the dirt in the cup. try it the chickes will like it !. thanks !!
I don’t see why they wouldn’t. The only issue would possible be how well they’d thread in with the sharpness of the metal. I’d suspect the plastic material almost becomes threaded as it’s screws in.
That’s a good point and smart for thinking about that. I will admit they don’t perform well below freezing temps. I’ve not had them break from freezing but obviously the water won’t flow when froze. We place our rubber bowls or a heated waterer in the heart of winter. We’re in the mid Atlantic area so for us the winters aren’t as harsh.
Sorry about that. I’ve had a lot of people tell me they can’t find them so I emailed rent a coop last week. Here is their response “We have an order of the 6 Pack of Auto-Fill Cups with Cage Clips on the way, and we expect them to restock within the next 2 weeks. Your viewers can keep an eye on the Amazon listing, and they will be able to order at the same link, as soon as the cups are available!”
I’ve been seeing some videos where people have done that with water troughs. I hadn’t thought to try with poultry waters but it makes sense. Thanks for sharing
I haven’t had that issue so I’m not really sure of a recommendation. I was thinking it could’ve been a space issue resulting in them getting bumped but I’ve used it with my broilers too which is closer quarters without issue so I’m not sure that’s the issue either. Sorry they didn’t work out for you.
I wonder if they can sell you and others the cup inserts for your older cups. It sure would save a lot of people money. At the same time, i am sure you would need replacements for the future should you lose an insert or two.
That would be a good thing if they’d sell the inserts separate. I have had to change 2 cups out over the years. Easy screw out and screw another in. Quick and easy fix
This video is a little older and I checked their website and I’m not seeing these exact ones any longer. I’m just seeing their original cups. I’ve sent an email to see what I may be able to find out.
I got an email back from rentacoop. Looks like they’ll be available soon. Here is their response. “We have an order of the 6 Pack of Auto-Fill Cups with Cage Clips on the way, and we expect them to restock within the next 2 weeks. Your viewers can keep an eye on the Amazon listing, and they will be able to order at the same link, as soon as the cups are available! “
Depending on how cold your area gets the cups do freeze sometimes. For the most part ours have frozen overnight but thaw as the day progresses so doesn’t cause too much issue for us. Fortunately the freezing doesn’t seem to break them. Definitely a consideration for winter time though
I’d say I’ve averaged about 2-3 years life per cup. I don’t put them away in winter so I’d assume freezing wears on them over time. I’ve never had them leak where they connect to the bucket, usually is the inner spring area that controls flow that eventually goes bad. I just unscrew and rescrew another as needed
About to do something like this but what about in the cold weather. If there’s water in the cups, even with a heater, won’t the water in the cups freeze?
That is a good question and yes they do freeze. We’re fortunate that we tend to be below freezing in the night but most days temps get above freezing and the cups thaw. If we get a long stretch of cold, I’ll add a rubber bowl with water to their run. The freezing surprisingly hasn’t caused damage to the cups.
Been using that for 2 years - and opt to go nipple style water system. - thread on that thing goes brittle and it will break over time (specially if its on direct sunlight) and it does not solve the issue of crud that accumulates over time in that cup. Disaster happened the worst time- (i was out vacation for 1 week). Thank god i installed camera inside the coop and chicken run- one of the hens accidentally knock the cup and it broke the screw type pipe- and it drained the whole bucket. I was able to ask a family member to pay a visit and put a bowl of water as a temporary fix . My suggestion if you are going to use this - make sure you have 2 or more buckets- just in case one fails- you have a backup.
That stinks that yours broke. I’ve been lucky and the only cup I had break was the result of me dropping the bucket once and it cause the internal spring to break. You do bring up a good point for having multiple waterers when out of town. We set up 3 waterers when we go out of town so as a fail safe and to make it easier on the person tending to our birds. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I was wondering how these would hold up in winter using a fish tank heater inside the bucket Thoes cups look like they would hold up to some frozen water Depending on how frozen Great video
I did have some freeze last winter but I never had one break from the freezing. I never used a heater though. May need to try that. I add a rubber bowl with water in the winter and mostly just fill it as a back up.
@@RockyCreekHomestead we have been looking into ideas for 40below winters not much holds up to that but thoes black rubber bowl's hold up well lol But they do freze solid some days 3x water changes Some days we just have to tap the ice I was thinking if i could keep the bucket heated it might radiate some heat to keep the plumbing flowing some anyway Ideas to think about

I made a homemade one similar to what you’re describing as well for when we went out of town and something was getting into it like crazy at night. I just stick with my pan or standard feeder hanging.
@@RockyCreekHomestead mine is outside and stands like 4ft off the ground never had anything get into it and it's funny to watch the chickens start heading towards the feeder like 10min before it goes off anticipating the food. It's like they got a internal clock or something. Lol

😆 thanks. Raising them is pretty easy but there’s so many products out there it’s easy to be overwhelmed. After 2 years I finally figured out a setup that works for me. Everyone’s situation is different though so you just got to figure out what meets your needs best
Thank you!
👍
These are the only cups i seen that would work for rabbits too cool...they might try to take the clean up cup out depending on how bored your bunny is lol
RentACoop actually sells a metal cup version for animals such as rabbits. I plan to get one to test in the very near future 😉
@@RockyCreekHomestead good to know thanks lol they love to chew and fit on stuff lol
Thanks for sharing. The vent hole has worked well and the hole is so small I’ve not had issues with bugs or debris so far.
Just ordered some due to this video
Hope you like them. They’ve worked well for us.
@@RockyCreekHomestead thank you kindly !! You have a nice place.
Loved the video! You explain things very well. Do you suggest always putting the waterer in shade as to not promote algae?
So I reached out to the company about a week ago because many people said the ones I linked were showing unavailable. They said they had the 6 packs on order and should be available in a couple weeks and that the link showing should work once they’re in stock. Their standard cups don’t have the liner so that’s probably all that’s available currently. I use both and both work well. A quick and easy way to clean the standard ones of debris Is a use an old milk jug filled with water and I pour it in the cups flushing out the debris. I do it each morning and works well.
Great video! Subscribed!
Thank you. Appreciate your time spent with us.
Great informative video
Thank you, glad it was helpful.
I tell you what. Great video. Thanks!
Thank you. Appreciate you taking the time to watch.
I just got some and will get the bucket set up. Why not drill holes higher so the bucket doesn't have to be raised for the cups to be able to fill? Is it to keep debris out better?
The lower the cups just results in less residual water in the bottom. The higher the bucket off the ground results in less debris in the cups.
I love your water bucket
Thanks, it’s served us well.
I would like you to move the bucket onto a sinder block , then you would keep the water cleaner. now the hight is too close to the ground. That's a source of the dirt in the cup. try it the chickes will like it !. thanks !!
Thank you for the tip. Appreciate always hearing advice and perspective from others.
These ones get nasty too. Have to clean these also.
You’re correct. I’ve found a dollar store toilet brush or an old baby bottle brush makes quick work of that
Very helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching
Have you thought about lifting the 5 gallon bucket off the ground to about shoulder height of the chickens? Should help to keep those cups cleaner too
Yea RentACoop recommends shoulder height. I just need to get some blocks or something to better raise them and keep them from being unstable.
Good job man!
Thank you. Thanks for watching
this good for little chicks
I do have a small version that I’ve used for chicks after they’re tall enough to reach them without issue.
Would these work with a metal bucket?
I don’t see why they wouldn’t. The only issue would possible be how well they’d thread in with the sharpness of the metal. I’d suspect the plastic material almost becomes threaded as it’s screws in.
Looks like a good idea.but what about us that live in colder areas???
That’s a good point and smart for thinking about that. I will admit they don’t perform well below freezing temps. I’ve not had them break from freezing but obviously the water won’t flow when froze. We place our rubber bowls or a heated waterer in the heart of winter. We’re in the mid Atlantic area so for us the winters aren’t as harsh.
These newer cups aren't available on their website. I ordered cups but received the old version. Do you have a link?
Sorry about that. I’ve had a lot of people tell me they can’t find them so I emailed rent a coop last week. Here is their response “We have an order of the 6 Pack of Auto-Fill Cups with Cage Clips on the way, and we expect them to restock within the next 2 weeks. Your viewers can keep an eye on the Amazon listing, and they will be able to order at the same link, as soon as the cups are available!”
They make little hoods for the cups, now. That keeps dirt/poop out
Yep, I’ve seen them but I haven’t tried them yet. I probably should
Very useful message brother 👍
Thank you, appreciate you taking the time to watch
Here is a F YI for you put copper in Side your water. It will help keep down mold
I’ve been seeing some videos where people have done that with water troughs. I hadn’t thought to try with poultry waters but it makes sense. Thanks for sharing
Do you have a
Video
On a good feeder stystem?
I do not. I’ve used various kinds and honestly prefer to use pans and traditional hangers.
Thank you
Thank you.
my chickens kept knocking them askew and making them leak. didn't work. suggestions to keep them from bumping into them?
I haven’t had that issue so I’m not really sure of a recommendation. I was thinking it could’ve been a space issue resulting in them getting bumped but I’ve used it with my broilers too which is closer quarters without issue so I’m not sure that’s the issue either. Sorry they didn’t work out for you.
What size tubing would you use? Irrigation tubing?
I’m sorry I don’t think I understand your question. There’s no tubing needed for this poultry watering set up.
Do they see the inserts? I already have the cups
A quick search shows they do. Here’s the link I found rentacoop.com/products/6-pack-cup-insert-for-rentacoop-auto-fill-cups
Have you ever used the cups with turkeys
I’ve never raised turkeys so I haven’t tried that. My goose has used them but that’s the only other poultry I’ve had and seen use them. Sorry
I want the new cups can’t seem to find them can you help me 1:50
This video is a little older and I checked their website and I’m not seeing these exact ones any longer.
Can you use it in the winter?
Depending on how cold your area gets the cups do freeze sometimes. For the most part ours have frozen overnight but thaw as the day progresses so doesn’t cause too much issue for us. Fortunately the freezing doesn’t seem to break them. Definitely a consideration for winter time though
I don't know i think the little one knows the chickens would love a fish lol
😂 they probably would
@@RockyCreekHomestead lol
You can use a turkey baster to suck the debris out of the water bowls.
Good tip, thanks
Thank you!!!
Absolutely, thanks for watching
Thi is amazing ,👍
I’ll try these, because all the other ones leak or break.
@@RockyCreekHomestead thank you!!!’
@@RockyCreekHomestead thank you. Another thing to worry about lol
Thats a lot better than to have a swimming pool for the chicken...
Helpful❤
Glad it helped
Question I would have is how many meat birds do you run per cup?
In my meat bird set up I have 4 cups for 15 - 20 birds. I do two buckets with two cups a piece. That seems to have worked just fine.
@Rocky Creek Homestead Thanks a bunch for the reply. I'm going to set them up on a gravity system in my chicken tractor with their pvc t system.
theres nothing wrong with the store bought ones, I've just found hanging them off the ground helps a ton to keep stuff out of them
Store bought works okay, I just hate the way they fill and the price of some of the larger ones. I prefer this option
Lovely whooooooow 😂
I was wondering how these would hold up in winter using a fish tank heater inside the bucket
Thoes cups look like they would hold up to some frozen water
Depending on how frozen
Great video
I did have some freeze last winter but I never had one break from the freezing. I never used a heater though. May need to try that. I add a rubber bowl with water in the winter and mostly just fill it as a back up.
@@RockyCreekHomestead we have been looking into ideas for 40below winters not much holds up to that but thoes black rubber bowl's hold up well lol
But they do freze solid some days 3x water changes
Some days we just have to tap the ice
I was thinking if i could keep the bucket heated it might radiate some heat to keep the plumbing flowing some anyway
Ideas to think about
@@RockyCreekHomestead better plan iv line of coffee that will keep them all warm and frost free lol
Much love xoxox
😂IV line! Now that’s ingenuity.

My birds jumped on them and they snapped off, only need one to do it and it empties the bucket
Do you put anything in the water?
I do not. They just get good ol’ hose water 😆.
I got my cups about 7mon ago and they gave me the old style cups😔🙁
Ah man that stinks. I’m sorry you didn’t get what you expected. Have you contacted them to inquire about why?
@@RockyCreekHomestead no I didn't know they where supposed to look like that till I saw your video
Sorry buddy. Hopefully the old style will still serve you well. I still have some waterers with the old style and they’re still just fine.
How can get this in online, send Link
The link I had in description may be old. Here is where I’ve found them www.amazon.com/RentACoop-Automatic-Chicken-Waterer-Poultry/dp/B07D6VFCWM?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1
Really good idea on the waterer but I made a feeder similar to yours and the rats took over. I have better luck with a deer spinner feeder. It helps to just feed my chickens and not my rats. Lol
Lol
That’s a great idea. That would work well for feeding when out of town 🤔
@@RockyCreekHomestead I feed mine every day like this and I supplement table scraps and dried meal worms in the winter and I make fly larvae traps for the summer and my chickens free range really easy way to take care of them
Although this video is a year old I tried emailing rentacoop explaining I've been searching for these water cups with inserts without any success . Does anyone know if the company still sell them . I'm in Queensland Australia maybe that a problem yet I'd still like to know , anyone please ?
I’ve had a lot of people ask me this recently so I emailed them earlier this week. This was their response. “We have an order of the 6 Pack of Auto-Fill Cups with Cage Clips on the way, and we expect them to restock within the next 2 weeks. Your viewers can keep an eye on the Amazon listing, and they will be able to order at the same link, as soon as the cups are available! “. I hope this helps. I’m still very pleased with their cups and haven’t needed to buy any since so I was unaware they were out of stock until people began asking me. I hope you’ll see them available in the coming weeks
Please use food grade buckets if you make this.
Ours are food grade. I always check the symbols on the bottom. Good point to share with others
@@RockyCreekHomestead yup. Lots of people don't think about that.
My chickens keep knocking the red cup part off and the water all flows out..
Oh man, I’ve never had mine do that. Sorry it’s not working out. Are they RentACoops brand? I know there’s a ton of similar looking products out there. Sounds frustrating
@@RockyCreekHomestead no.. they are a different brand.. but.. I'm glad to hear about rent a coop brand! Go figure. I just ordered more from somewhere else, but definitely going to order these if the next ones don't work!
Put a cone on top of the bucket
Thank you. I appreciate the tip
This won’t work in deep winter however. The black plastic pans for winter.
You are correct. We use the rubber bowls in the winter
I'd hang the bucket to keep hens from jumping on top.
We’ve since put something in top of it and that seems to have kept them off. Thanks for the tip.
Only trouble you can't see how much water is in the tub you still have to check it daily
You are correct. I check the animals twice a day anyways so a quick peak in the bucket doesn’t bother me too much.
I tried to order. But it takes to Amazon
I hate Amazon
Sorry, some of their items are only available on Amazon. They have an actual website too. I wonder if it is more cost effective for them to sell on Amazon. I’m not sure on that though, im just guessing
