Thank you!! Besides using the basic video animation options, I was wondering how to implement video transitions. Now I know to turn my clip into a storyline. Awesome tips!
Glad to see this Matt. With all the negative reviews about Final Cut Pro X, I've hesitated purchasing. But you are showing how easy it is to use ... with great features. Love your channel.
Wow Matt this video was great. Really helped me with with a few little problems I was having. I love the simplicity with which you pack so much pertinent information.
Great video! Even though I'm somewhat familiar with the program, I didn't know how to add transitions to the top row of clips. I now know to make that a storyline! Thanks for the tips! I look forward to more videos.
Matt...I look forward to your videos. Keep the final cut pro tutorials coming. I just bought it (coming from imovie) and your videos are very helpful. We appreciate your work.
@ConnorCrosbyPrdctns Yeah, that's the exact problem some people have. Its not even really a "timeline" anymore- its the "storyline" and everything builds off that. You have to adjust your thinking from the standard multitrack timeline approach of other editors to the new storyline concept, then everything starts to make sense.
As you can see I watch this video a lot, you've done a great job explaining simple things about FCPX!. This is gonna be my first time editing one of my Music Videos using FCP, instead of Sony Vegas Pro.
On the transition issue: I obviously have the same problem, odd-acting transitions were actually one of the main reasons I switched from iMovie to FCPX. When I googled the thing, I found couple of articles, that all said that ever since FCPX 10.0.3, all transitions are automatically set to use extra available media, and you can create a full overlap in precision editor..
Sure. You would just need to keyframe the position of each clip. I'm sure there are some tutorials out there that can show you step by step. I would search "FCPX Position KeyFrames" or something like that.
I've just spent the last 2 years using Premiere Pro on Windows; horrible, horrible experience from day 1. Always buggy, always crashing, not to mention even with high spec hardware it runs SLOW. Just bought a Mac last month and decided to do the "swap" to Final Cut Pro. WOW. Absolutely blown away. Yea it's a bit limited here and there, but only on some of the more advanced features. Everything's faster (even though its a slightly lower spec system!!??) and it hasn't crashed once. It's so intuitive too! I LOVE IT.
i think the crash did come cause ur pc wasnt good enough. i know some people who use adobe software on windows and they haven't got any problem. :) But i'm very happy with my mac :)
@romshua I've been using FCPX, but have nothing against the others at all. Like with most things, each has its strengths and weaknesses. Its all about picking the right one for your needs.
Well, Apple has made a 15" MacBook Pro since 2006, so I would need to know more to tell you specifically about your computer. All current generation Macs will run FCPX, some will just run it much faster. I use a MacPro 3.33Ghz hexacore with 16GB of RAM, a 2GB graphics card, and an SSD-- I'm probably not the best person to do a speed comparison with.
Thank you (very)2 much for uploading this tutorial. It helps me a lot. I feel like I found the right person who can answer my question. I have been looking for mask symbool that looks like a mouse pointed arrow. But I did not find in Final Cut Pro X 10. I don't know if Final Cut Pro X 10 have that option or not but I think I saw that in other final cut Pro not in Pro X 10. I will be so proud if could answer this for me. Once again thank you so much for uploading the above tutorial.
Hello Matt, I would like to make a tutorial request like you mentioned in this video, First of all I enjoy your videos the most, has the are crystal clear on what they teach!
Thanks Matt, the first one really helped me a lot, I couldn't understand why every time I put a transition, the audio went out of sync, thanks for solving it. The other tips were great too, but why no 1080p?
Another way to apply to same effects to multiple clips would be to copy the clip you want to effects from, and then "Past Effects" or "Paste Attributes" :)
@thenerdal Yeah? How often have you needed any of those? I assume you must work in a large editing house that does a lot of traditional work if those are critical features to you. Which one is it? I bet there's no way you just read those terms on some disgruntle TV editors review of FCPX and therefore came to the conclusion it must "suck". All joking aside, only a tiny fraction of people who edit videos need those features, so for them FCPX sucks, but for everyone else it rocks. Hard.
@Snc6475 I can't answer that without know what you want to do with it. Its an amazing program with great features, but its only worth it if you have a need for it.
love the video, but when i make a compound clip and i have some overlapping audio or something, it creates a compound clip that messes with my main storyline especially if the audio doesn't end exactly when the clip does. any help?
Is there a way to archive a project such that it occupies the least amount of space, a project which can be totally reimported into the timeline at a later date for reediting?
Quick question, I've upgraded from iMovie to FCP X, and in iMovie I know that whenever you used a section of footage, iMovie would put a red/orange bar over parts of the media in the event browser indicating that you've used that clip in the timeline. Is there a similar feature in FCP X? I can't find a toggle for it. I know a red bar in FCP X means you rated it poorly, but I'm not sure if there is another way to mark used footage. Thanks.
@MattsMacintosh I know. I'm just being a big baby about it. I'm sure once Apple releases the first update that fixes a lot of bugs and adds more features, I will start using it and love it. Thanks for the help :)
Wow great vid Matt. It's amazing what you can learn in 4min. I have a quick question for you... I hit Command + F in the time line and brought up the "Find" filter window and now I can't get rid of it. How do I make it go away??? Thanks!!!
@TechTimeWithNoah at this point, with apple not releasing 'pro' features such as mulitcam, EDL, XML etc... and the difference UI along with little support for tape based workflows it is at this point a tool in an editors tool box, you need to evaluate what you want out of your editing software and pick what is best for you.
Hi, thanks for this, very useful and cool stuff... Found the transitions tip really useful but I don't seem to have that 'available media' / 'full overlap' drop down - currently using compositing or messing about in precision editor
Hi Matt! I have problems with the sound, i record my videos in clubs with loud music, with a Rode video mic pro, all the settings are correct, the sound after rendering the video is excellent but when i upload it to RUclips it distorts like hell...so i was wondering what are the correct sound settings and how much can i boost it in order to have it clear on youtube?
Hi Matthew, thank you for this very helpful tutorial! Under transitions in my editing menu there is no 'Apply transitions using' option. I'm using the latest version of Final Cut Pro X so this might be due to upgrades - do you know where this option is located now?
Hey how do you stop the clip from automatically moving over, once you've cut parts out the video. I'm editing a music video, & I don't want the video clip to move once I've cut parts out.
Oh wow, you have to go through an extra menu to add a transition to a standalone clip if it's not in the main "storyline"? Another reason why I'll stick with FCP7 then. Haha. I really hope there are some updates soon that give back some functionality. I really want to use FCPX but there are just too many things I use a lot that aren't there.
Off topic I know... but watching this video again reminds me how upset some were when Final Cut X first arrived. I wonder if Logic is in for such a facelift as well?
hi, I recently purchased FCPX & have been using it every day for about a month. I do like it's user friendliness, but it seems so slow to use. Is there anything I can do to make it run faster? Seems like I just work on my project for 5-15 minutes, & I get that spinning ball of death. I am working on very complicated 5 minute music videos on an iMac, Version 10.6.8, Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, memory 8GB 1057 MHz DDR3. Any help would be much appreciated.
Your tutorials are so pertinent and helpful. Simple and quick, please keep them coming. Thanks!
dude! that compound clip tid bit is gonna change my editing LIFE! Thanks so much!!!
whitney hedrick Ha. Glad I could help.
WOW I was manually making the transitions, this is GREAT!! thank you :)
Thanks Matt. You basically answered all of my critical questions about FCPX! Keep up the good work.
FCPX marks the clips as well. You'll see what looks like a faded yellow range selection on the portions of the clips that are in your timeline.
Wow Matt this video was great. Really helped me with with a few little problems I was having. I love the simplicity with which you pack so much pertinent information.
Straight to the point, no bullsh*t or stupid editing, good informations, GOOD VIDEO!
Great video! Even though I'm somewhat familiar with the program, I didn't know how to add transitions to the top row of clips. I now know to make that a storyline! Thanks for the tips! I look forward to more videos.
@iamtimthegreat The default is set by the first clip in your project. Go to "window"- "show audio enhancements" and see if both channels have audio.
That's determined by the individual viewer. You can set RUclips to play HD only for you, but it won't change how others see it.
THIS IS the best video I've seen
Matt...I look forward to your videos. Keep the final cut pro tutorials coming. I just bought it (coming from imovie) and your videos are very helpful. We appreciate your work.
seriously exactly what i was looking for
@ConnorCrosbyPrdctns Yeah, that's the exact problem some people have. Its not even really a "timeline" anymore- its the "storyline" and everything builds off that. You have to adjust your thinking from the standard multitrack timeline approach of other editors to the new storyline concept, then everything starts to make sense.
@LandonGerrits Yep, you'll need compressor, or a third party transcoding app.

If you video is flagged for copyright and you are using the music from FCP, you can challenge the claim. It will usually get fixed within a week.
Sure. You would just need to keyframe the position of each clip. I'm sure there are some tutorials out there that can show you step by step. I would search "FCPX Position KeyFrames" or something like that.

@thebluecollargeek Mostly the 24-70mm, but I've been using the 50mm more often since I've been shooting in all natural light.
I just checked out some videos on your channel. They were all in HD. Is there a specific one you are having issues with?
@romshua I've been using FCPX, but have nothing against the others at all. Like with most things, each has its strengths and weaknesses. Its all about picking the right one for your needs.
@ConnorCrosbyPrdctns I think everything is easier in FCP X once you understand it. Its just different workflow, with a completely different paradigm.
Ooh, here we go! Been using FCPX for a few weeks now, getting quite good.
@ducksfood Normally just do that with the camera, but there is a blur transition
Man! You just saved me a ton of time. Thanks!
I'm moving from iMovie and those were just perfect tips for me (especially the last one :D ) thanks for the tips!
Great video, Matt!!! Could you do a video on lighting? I find that I can never get the lighting right in videos...
I love you and I would bear your child into this wicked crazy world. Keep doing fcpx videos!
When I go to preferences then editing, there is nothing underneath transition ? There is no "Available media"? Help
another helpful tip for me Matt, thank you once again
oh THX love the part of the compound clips!
Thanks man for your work!
appreciate what you are doing. Very informative and pls keep going. Love from
Singapore.
@thenerdal For a digital based workflow, I would argue that FCPX is actually the best editing software available today. It absolutely does not "suck".

@MasonsVlogasim I recommend OWC or Amazon.
No problem. I'm glad it was helpful.
how do you do the "Available Media" option in the most recent FCPX? i looked and the option is not there.
@TechTimeWithNoah Do you work in broadcast TV? Then no. Do you make digital works or short films? Then yes.
Its part of the app I use to record my screen, Screenflow.
Hello Matt, I would like to make a tutorial request like you mentioned in this video, First of all I enjoy your videos the most, has the are crystal clear on what they teach!
@LOTRzagorath Hmmm... that's actually a great question. I'll see if I can figure out a way to do it.
Yep, you can keyframe all the effects just like in FCP7
@thecheetodude24 I would open Activity Monitor and see what aspect of your system is causing the lag.
@drakeknowstechnology Nope, there is no motion tracking in Final Cut
the picture and picture tip REALLY helped me!!! :D
Thanks man :)
Hey, would the quality of the video change when you change ProRes to H.264?
Awesome video! :)
Use the position tool instead of the arrow.
@rodrigosendas I don't have it anymore and don't remember. I'll check my past orders on Amazon and get back to you
Thanks Matt, the first one really helped me a lot, I couldn't understand why every time I put a transition, the audio went out of sync, thanks for solving it. The other tips were great too, but why no 1080p?
@costumATX I'm an unemployed mercenary right now, but I'll be going to film school in the Spring.
Another way to apply to same effects to multiple clips would be to copy the clip you want to effects from, and then "Past Effects" or "Paste Attributes" :)

@Snc6475 I can't answer that without know what you want to do with it. Its an amazing program with great features, but its only worth it if you have a need for it.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Can you rephrase the question or message me an example?
Wow thats pretty informing! Keep em coming yo!
Oh cool! The picture in picture has different fade in and fade outs!! In imovie it always changes both of them if u toggle one or the other sides.
Good info short sweet to the point very use full. Thanks for posting.
love the video, but when i make a compound clip and i have some overlapping audio or something, it creates a compound clip that messes with my main storyline especially if the audio doesn't end exactly when the clip does. any help?
Is there a way to archive a project such that it occupies the least amount of space, a project which can be totally reimported into the timeline at a later date for reediting?
@thiagoarantes Thanks! You rock for leaving a comment.
@iamtimthegreat What are your audio export settings?
@MattsMacintosh yeah, I'm sure you're right. I just wish Apple didn't have to make such a drastic change in terms of the timeline.
thanks for uploading - such a great quick useful video...will be watching more :)
@XVSProductions I have a slider and a fluid head tripod
Quick question, I've upgraded from iMovie to FCP X, and in iMovie I know that whenever you used a section of footage, iMovie would put a red/orange bar over parts of the media in the event browser indicating that you've used that clip in the timeline. Is there a similar feature in FCP X? I can't find a toggle for it. I know a red bar in FCP X means you rated it poorly, but I'm not sure if there is another way to mark used footage. Thanks.
just started using final cut pro x... thanks for this video!
I can't find the transition option in preferences in the new version of fcpx. Plz help
@MattsMacintosh I know. I'm just being a big baby about it. I'm sure once Apple releases the first update that fixes a lot of bugs and adds more features, I will start using it and love it. Thanks for the help :)
you really helped my advanced video career
@Xeyad1 No problem
@hjmeix I did this on the Air. My Pro is packed up right now to move.
Nice video man, it really helps me syncing CoD clips :)
Wow great vid Matt. It's amazing what you can learn in 4min. I have a quick question for you... I hit Command + F in the time line and brought up the "Find" filter window and now I can't get rid of it. How do I make it go away??? Thanks!!!
@funnymanorityy Just use the censor effect.

@Pakifier My videos are the exact length they need to be for me to get the information across.
I don't see any. I have entire clips that are used and active in my timeline, but there aren't any markings in the event browser.
Great video. Thanks Matt.
The 'Apply Transition Using' option isn't there when I go to 'Preferences'
Hey Matt great video - can u do a video about frames per second for cameras I'm a little confused on that subject
That export thing was Great! I had an drumcover forr 3:21 And it's took seven hours to upload
Good stuff - I'm learning...keep it coming
Hi Matthew, thank you for this very helpful tutorial! Under transitions in my editing menu there is no 'Apply transitions using' option. I'm using the latest version of Final Cut Pro X so this might be due to upgrades - do you know where this option is located now?
agree same issue here :(
Awesome Video, thanks for sharing these good tips.
Hey how do you stop the clip from automatically moving over, once you've cut parts out the video. I'm editing a music video, & I don't want the video clip to move once I've cut parts out.
This is great info thanks from one Matt to another
thanks Matthew... your tutorial really helped me a lot... SUBSCRIBED....
wow, nice thanks for these!

@endlessitaly21 Right click the compound clip and click "Break apart clip items".
Hey matt, do you think could do a video on what settings you use on screenflow?
