Restore It well yes and no mate , as you will find you can accidentally cut slots in the metal with the grinding discs and this can’t happen with the flap disc , as the flap disc will smooth and blend it better
dude, this has been an awesome few days taking my time to watch this touring documentation. my own touring is in the ocean and arrives in 2 weeks - love that I found your channel right now......... thank you. keep it up, beautiful resto
I spent quite a while using flux cored wire for this type of repair, then whenI did my Stag bare shell rebuild I decided to go for the gas conversion with a large Argon mix bottle from a local guy. The difference was truly amazing, really like night and day, I fully recommend it. No slag and much less grinding needed.
Greetings again my Friend. Very glad to see new achievements and videos from you, well done. I always wanted to have a Studio, but unfortunately I did not even have a place for it, it is a pity that I did not find support among my friends. However, I am really very happy that You have, good luck and success to you, thanks for the video.
Great video! Always love to see others willing to take that much effort into restoring a nonperfect car. I feel your pain with not finding parts, I have a 1991 Toyota stationwagon and while the sedan was one of the most sold vehicles in my country back in the day, finding rearend parts for a wagon is next to impossible... They've all rusted away... Mine tries to 😄
You're doing really well with the welding. I don't think anyone can get much better results than that on such thin metal with flux core. Definitely get some flap disks I would use about 120 grit.
Have you looked for any local scrappies? There were some superb ones near Málaga and they had all sorts of cars from the 80's on to 00's. All in good nick and proper cheap too. Used to get all my parts from the scrapyards.
Autodoc is ... well take a look at it’s customers service. If you get a wrong part ( because of their mistake ) you have to pay the shipping for them to return your money ..
If you wanted a half a car mostly rust free I've got some here in Australia. I break them new chassis parts are way expensive. Great to see the coupe again
Hi mate, one more good video, but let me give you some recommendations, flux welding wired not really good idea, you should use protection gas, better mix, Argon+CO, this is the best for car body repair. This weld protection option is most acceptable. I understand that using this is more expensive, but in your case, it is most effective, in terms of the quality of the result. Good luck man.
Looking great sir. I wish I could've sent you that piece. My buddy just scrapped his e30 IS because he wrapped it around a poll, hes fine. The whole front end was intact, I grabbed the grill and lower valance. Just wish I knew you needed one, I would've sent you the whole front clip.
P.S it's not MIG welding, it's just flux core welding. MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas, flux core is gasless. Only shielding is the flux inside the wire. Great work she's coming along nicely.
@@RestoreIt I have been doing a lot of work on my E38 around the engine and still working on it and uploading videos with my progress. Love your channel as it is educational and not just rev battles and silly chat shows designed to make just views and watchtime with no education and learning for the viewers.
Have you tried to use gas welding instead of TIG/MIG? Back in 80s, it was widely used for body patching because of much better control, lower chance to cut through and surface that almost doesn't need grinding.
I did exactly the same restauration of the rear bumper parts on my E34 Touring, but replaced all rusted parts with brand new ones from BMW. Hope it gonna last several years :)
I love these videos, but i could not believe that one would start with such a rusty car. I have have several old Benz's and rust was the defining issue in the purchase. No, it is very even for someone who does not understand english a lot like me, and also you are among the first who explains deeply even the small details, so good work@@RestoreIt
I see you've corrected your 2nd channel logo! If I was you with that panel just make your own up. Even if its in several bits it doesn't matter once paint is on :) and for rounded bolts you can buy special sockets to hammer on that bite onto the nut :)
Yeah thanks for the Andrew. I would do this if I had more time to focus on it. Im super busy at the moment and I just really want a brand new one ready to go. I'm still a bad welder at best remember :D
Your welcome. Well I understand that but you may not have a choice or ask a local machinist? Surely they can fabricate a new one using the old one as a guide. That will save you time and effort 😊👍
I think the scrap yard will be good option, you live in spain now right? Lots of unrusted BMW i guess ;) It not a shame to use such parts. New parts arent made anymore because there isnt enough demand..
I know what you mean, but the metal is so thin it'll just blow through. Small separated tacks seems to work best for me at the moment. I think i need a TIG really
hey man, i saw on one of your E30 got a mud flap. Do you have anymore set or know anyone who has one? In my place, the price of it is skyrocketing and i cant afford one

Hi there Fluctus! I've been using it for over five years now. It seems to do the job. However its not something I like using and after recently learning the basics of welding i'd much rather cut it out. But it does have it uses for sure.

Mate don’t use a grinding disc to flatten welds, use and abrasive flap wheel for your angle grinder instead
Oh really? I thought the grinding discs were made for the job? I'll get some big flap discs as well thanks Jason.
Restore It well yes and no mate , as you will find you can accidentally cut slots in the metal with the grinding discs and this can’t happen with the flap disc , as the flap disc will smooth and blend it better
if you keep the disc moving and dont aply much pressure there is no way to cut a slot.
Flap disk is faster better stronger even easier. I came to say your ratchet won't like being on the receiving end of an impact wrench.

it would be a way easier to use flap grinding discs for that purpose, you may want to try it next time :) less collateral damage and more control

I hate it when the dealers tell people that and you will wait a long time for the part. You should build one and do the measurement
I LOVE to watch the E30 videos ! Thank you
Investing in a bottle of shielding gas, and using solid wire (0.6mm/0.8mm) would greatly improve your welding results! Keep it up :)

@@RestoreIt I really felt that it helped using argon/normal wire. Makes a big difference using a thinner wire
Nick, use a flap disc on the grinder tool. That just scuffs the metal instead of taking off too much of the welded area.
It’s only when you start doing this sort of stuff you realise why bodyshops charge so much

Can’t recommend TIG for welding on Cars, just get a proper MIG-Welder with solid Wire and Standard shielding Gas (82/18)

Where did the sedan body go? Will there be videos on it?(sorry for my bad english)

You've gotta use what you have at the time sometimes :)
You should just have a go at trying to fabricate the missing metal piece. It's not terribly complex and could be made with metal shaping tools.
