I don't even know where to start ... I am watching this episode now for the third time (if you start binge-watching ONE video in a loop ... this means something) .... Let me summarise : YOU GUYS ARE FANTASTIC !!!
this is so good and Aaron did a great job! when we build sets we use foam, we structure it using wood and only use wood where it's necessary like counters and places where there would be screens, lights...etc attached to. it's way easier to handle be it shipping or moving to location and such and easy to shape, comes in different textures, strengths and colors can be easily textured, way easier than wood which takes so much less time and effort to do so. and best part is the wood structure can be used again as well as the majority of foam which is sustainable cost effective and nice to nature and your pockets 😂 and it looks denser than wood in both real life and on camera which help sells a wall for drywall or metal wall, depends on the look. Aaron's talent with wood when applied to working with a mix of foam and wood structure will produce amazing sets in less time and effort than doing it all with wood. but there must be a lot of work before that to determine everything because there is so little room for mistakes and if mistakes or changes occur it's much easier to manage with foam than it is with wood. using foam, this could be done in less than a week and You guys could get a sponsor that sells foam for such uses and look around and see how cosplay designers use it to build superhero suits and such and that is where we got the idea from and we never went back to building things the old way. ps: the wood structure is usually put together like legos according to where tension and weight has to go so it's easier to assemble and disassemble and store and move around, we use connections instead of nails, the connections can be used again and again. saving money, time, effort, and visual satisfaction guaranteed, try it next time.

This ... this is the promise of virtual production for smaller filmmakers! Your first test (the window) was a nice proof of concept but a little unbderwhelming. The Nerdforge collab BLEW MY MIND but really showed the limitations of your small set. This ... this is what I expected you guys to try from the start. On anbother tangent ... I love you guys (huge fan, I have a few dollars put aside for when you do a fundraising for your first feature ... you guys and Film Riot ... why have neither of you made a feature?!?!?) and I'm a big fan of AI (I use it for tons of things) but saying that the way you used AI isn't stealing jobs ... two words: "concept artists" and "storyboard artists". Those are the people who's jobs were replaced by AI in this project. Sure ... you may have gone to a mood board instead or something like shotdeck instead of hirring a concept artist or storyboard artist but generative AI is going to replace a lot of jobs even if it doesn't eliminate jobs it will allow people to do jobs that would take days in minutes reducing the need for certain positions drastically. Concept artist, matte painters, inpainting for vfx, roto work is already made stupidly easy with rotobrush 3 / magic mask / runwayML. I've used Stable diffusion to do inpainting on some VFX shots for a client's little fan re-edit. Worked amazingly well. I'm teaching myself game design in GODOT making a turned based RPG type thing and 99% of the art is going to be generated through Stable Diffusion using a plugin for Krita so I can guide the result with my own sketches. Like I said, huge fan of both you guys and AI but AI is the new indsutrial revolution and many of us are the pottery maker and shoe maker looking at the end of our livelyhoods, replaced by machines. I say this is a web developer for a federal department that ha been at meetings and confrences about AI and have seen the tools that will replace me within the next 5 years.
Hey I totally agree that a concept artist should still be used, and can come up with much better art that AI. But for this the budget was very tight so design would have either fallen on me or not happened except maybe a few reference images. So wanted to show how short film/ low budget now has access to an almost concept artist. I might not have made it super clear in my explanation in the video though.
@@AaronWahab I totaslly agree and I personally use AI a lot. I ahev a plugin for Krita that allows me way more control than just using text prompt and it runs locally on my own machine. I just get triggered when people say AI is just another tool and it's not ocming for our jobs ... it is coming for our jobs and we need to be honest about that. :) My 9-5 is web development for a federal department ... I've been in meetings where I've seen the tools that will literally rpelace me in the next 5 years. I may not make it to retierment before AI does 80% of my work faster and cheaper than I can. That means they need 80 percent less man hours so 80% less staff to do the same work. We are the coblers looking at the start of the industrial revolution. BTW.: I ABSOLUTELY ADORE the work you do for VJUS / ANDYAX. I think you bring SO MUCH value to their work.
Mirror expert here. You should never clamp down with wood like this. This will cause the mirror to bend at an octogodecimal angle which will create micro-fractures along the longitudinal vertebrae of the reflective surface. That's gonna ruin your image disperse the light everywhere! What you want are these specific felt clamps that cost 15,000€ each (you need at least 6) and are only made by one dude in Switzerland. 15:09
how about cgi rendered graphics rendered on top of real green screen environment. yep, real actors, real geometry, but rendered surfaces in post. I mean shaped green screens with location/id data. and real camera data but in green screen city. scifi production technique fits scifi films better. less actual, more virtual. tron++. any green screen is either fully opaque blocking vision or partially green with transparency. the id/marked green screen walls and surfaces are textured later in post.
Good question! We were going to use a greenscreen for the virtual production part, and then it's not a good idea to use smoke as the keying will be difficult. Or else we would have installed it everywhere! :)
I love the sets! But the promos... the AI generated images in Emma's newscast kinda kill any sense of "real": we wouldn't see "paintings" in a newscast, and that's what they look like. The depth of field in the watch commercial is also pretty bad. Maybe the blurriness needs to be dialed down. A lot. Your stuff is so cool and inspiring!
Yeah ... I'm a huge fan of AI as a hobbyist / occasional freelancer but I KNOW AI is taking away jobs and it always makes me cringe when someone sais it's not taking jobs and then showing how they used it to do something that would have been a paid position before. I have no problems with AI being used but be honest with us and yourself about it. In this scenario, a concept artist would normally have been used ... that or a mood board would have been generated form still form other movies or from online images so a concept artist position MIGHT have been lost here. In terms of filmmaking I'm at the no budget range so saving money by using AI for concept art, to change my voice for certain non essential voice parts (REPLAY), using generative fill in Krita to do in painting ... that's all cost saving for me that allows me to put money in other things but I have no illusions about it not cutting jobs from other artists ... I'm honest wiht myself about what AI is doing. Welcome to the new industrial revolution ...
