  • The grim darkness of the 41st millennium is often characterized by moral grey areas and acts of terrible evil. its a universe where war is everything and every faction is wrapped up in a perpetual pursuit of violence. Yet there seems to be one faction that breaks this mold. one that ( on its surface) appears to value peace and diplomacy. But are the Tau as benevolent as they appear to be or is there something going on under the surface? lets talk about it.
This is my first attempt at a long form lore video. There is still an enormous amount to talk about when it comes to the tau, like their lack of warp presence or any of their named characters/ sphere expansions. my first few videos I publish will basically serve as practice for me. Long form content is a totally different beast compared to making shorts so I'm going to mess up here and there well I nail down my editing, scripting and all the various other intricacies that come with producing lore content.

From what i've read and saw, the Tau Technically took 5000 years to develop if i remeber correctly but it was said at some point that there was a Warp Stortm that originally engulfed their system and gave them a huge time to develop further, so maybe during this storm, 10000 years passed and not only a few thousand. Correct me if i'm wrong please!

    • @weshammer

I don't think time was manipulated for them, the warp storm mostly just protected them from invaders so they were able to focus entirely on uniting and advancing. Even humanity was never fully united like them.
To me they're like a satirical take on what can be accomplished if everyone put aside their differences and focused solely on getting better. Also not knowing about horrible the universe truly is is pretty helpful 😅. ignorance is bliss and all that

The tau are a lesser great race that stepped on to the stage of giants. They have only fought normal wars based on the standards of lesser conflicts. To battle a super power of this galactic conflict has opened their eyes to the true horrors of what the galaxy is really like as lesser races are ignorant of this struggle and get annihilated when stepped on by these giants.

Just a small note about the whole "mind control" thing, it comes from an old book on xeno-biology, where it's postulated that the Ethereals aren't really Tau but rather an artificial branch of evolution made by the Eldar, which is where the "blinding lights" thing came from when the first ethereals showed up, and it was pointed out that, the ethereals where at first literally twins, the first 2 ethereals where basically clones of each other, adding more credence to the idea that, they're not quite a natural product as the other Tau are.

    • @DangerousGazes
      @DangerousGazes 2 года назад +35

Never heard about this before? I thought the blindings lights thing was relatively new lore so I'm curious to what old xenobook claimed this. It would be interesting though. The eldar, certainly drukhari, definitely have the tech to do this but whats the purpose? Eldar peak society was colorful with arts, pleasure and creative freedom as staples. Tau are strict, working and shun individualism.
What would the eldar gain from the tau? A threat to humanity?
A warp-free tech army that could rival the necrons?
Or maybe just create an empire that doesnt give in to emotions like the aeldari did. Starting a new era of the galaxy where the chaos gods have no power.
Seems like the eldar would like to be part of that era though, even rule it.

    • @dathore
      @dathore 2 года назад +16

@@DangerousGazes the book is like 20 years old or so, it's very old, and may not be entirely canon anymore, but bits of it still pepper the lore arguments here and there, mostly from fans like me, that read it years ago and still remember it, it's not clear as to why the Eldar made the ethereals, but it is noted that the jewelry on their forehead is not of natural origin, the prevailing theory was that, Eldrad or some other powerful seer, saw the future where the Tau basically fought each other to extinction, and the Tiranids or some other faction took over their future territory, and that led to the extinction of the Eldar, thing is, it was never made clear, since the book never got a part two, or another version to answer the questions the first edition made.

Ironically, the Tau aren’t even that communist. The Eldar, of all things, are far more what Marx had in mind. First, the Tau obviously have a state run by the Ethereals, while the closet the Eldar have to centralized leadership are Seer Councils, which anyone can join. The Tau also have social classes evidenced by their castes, while the Eldar allow anyone to take up or leave a path when they want. Lastly, while not much is described about the Tau economy, the Eldar have explicitly automated everything and make all of their stuff out of Wraithbone, meaning actually paying for stuff is not necessary.

Tau are my favorite faction in 40k and it always amuses me how, much like a lot of the metaphors in 40k, they go right over the heads of the fans. Tau are criticized for not "belonging" in the 40k universe. As far as factions go, they're too "nice." They have some problematic elements, but the idea of appreciating peace, diplomacy, technology, and improving the quality of life of their citizens makes them the goodest guys of all in the 40k universe, which makes them seem not to mesh with the grimdark tones of the universe. But, that's the point. The Tau empire is tiny, being absolutely dwarfed by every other faction by orders of magnitude. So you've got this tiny little pocket of hope in a tiny little pocket of the galaxy that came too late to the game and is too small to ever meaningfully improve things in the Milky Way Galaxy. To play Tau is to recognize your own irrelevance in the 40k universe. The most you can hope for is that you never earn the attention of a single Ork Waaagh!, the full attention of a single Tyrannid hive fleet, or the attention of the Imperium of Man. Any one of these is the end of the Tau empire. The best part of all? If you leave the Tau lore alone and switch the tone to Noblebright, the Tau become the most evil faction in the universe.

I think most of the fans think they are “too perfect” and are waiting for the other shoe to drop and reveal them as monsters. I, for one, hope that does not happen. I appreciate this video's sanity. One of the other videos I saw on the Tau said they they were "the worst" of the 40k factions because of mind control. He was very sure that living under the Imperium or Orks was better because you got to be yourself and make your own choices. Which is bonkers because your choice is "suffer and die" or "suffer more and die" or "die right now to end your suffering. "
Like, the morality of empire, colonization, mental influence / mind control, and the caste system are obviously insidious and raise questions about what the ethereals are really up to. And it's 40k so you know there's some shady shit going down. But to say they are the most evil faction because they mentally manipulate their populace... Exactly how different is that from the brain-washing of the fanatical Imperium? Not different enough to claim the Tau protected worlds with equality are a worse fate than the brutality of the Hive Cities, forced labor, torture, and forced conscription of the Imperium.

The tau are immune to that bloat they don't have lineages and bloodlines, no one is getting promoted because he kissed some officer's ass. Even their castes are way less caste-like than the social classes of the imperium. An earth caste isn't a profession, it's a sub species. So many videos just devolve into a hate-filled meme-fest, but this video really explored at what makes the T'au, at least to me, the most interesting faction in 40K. Most the factions are so 1-dimensional, but the T'au have this weird layer to them. Where you can recognise that their way of life isn't good, but it isn't' evil either, it almost feels necessary. The T'au are a small race in a big galaxy, they don't have access to ancient technologies, hell magics, or insurmountable numbers. They strive for the Greater Good, because without it, they'd surely perish.

Imagine an earth caste battle mechanic that can wipe up wacky but powerful contraptions in the heat of well...battle to aid his comrades. Imagine water caste with their seemingly natural ability to pick up on other species' social quirks using that in dangerous espionage work.

Hot Fuzz “for the greater good”… anyway my opinion is that the Tau could either be the best or the worst empire. With a bit more freedom and value given to the individual they could be nearly utopian. If they use unity as an excuse to become even more authoritarian to follow a direct path to the greater good instead of allowing life to do the life thing and find a path to the greater good through the diversity and unpredictability of the process of life then they are just as bad as everybody else and pretending not to be. Then they would basically be a hive mind of the ethereals.

This was a fantastic video! Please do more long form ones like these, you are excellent at them.
Thank you so much for talking about what makes the Tau a real threat- Their insane growth and progress. The Tau aren't a big deal because they've got a galactic presence like the tyranids and the orks. No, they're a big deal for what they can become with time- a civilization that's both big and advanced, enough to eventually toy with the empire. And the state of the imperium of man as it is at the moment, being assaulted on all sides, means that is something that's more than likely to come to pass.
Also thank you for bringing up how some fans often misinterpret the Tau so that they seem way more horrible than they really are. Not to say they aren't, since the caste system is still pretty fucked, but the races in 40k are all on a scale of horribleness really. And it's just that the Tau happen to be on a lower level of that. And that's fine. Cause I personally find the whole complaint of "But muh grimdark!" really tiring.

They've definitely had some darker elements sprinkled into their lore over time.
For example there is once example where Tau conquered an imperial world, an openly hostile one, and decided to sterilise the humans, allowing them to live but dooming their population over time.
There's also some newer lore emphasising how totalitarian their society is, with breakaway Tau rejecting the rule of the ethereal caste.
And in general the Tau empire is not wholly free, they do bad things in the name of the greater good, including but not limited too civilian bombardment, sterilisation of populations, a rather rigid political structure that ultimately will oppress anyone who openly denounces the ethereals.
And they do have a caste system so they're not exactly a free society.
BUT by the standards of 40k, they're quite nice.
They're cool with multiple species, they're accepting of different religions, they don't simply murder what they don't understand, they're diplomatic, and ultimately if they see an alien civilisation, they will just leave it if they don't want to be bothered.

@@aguywithalotofopinions412 that’s true, even Guilliman would see Tau as Allies than enemies. He’s one of the few individuals in the setting that almost everyone doesn’t have; Common Sense (I.e. Ciphas Cain, Guilliman, Khan, and possible the Tau or Farsight)

Tau Greater Good ideology and lore is what brought me into the 40k universe. Their passive aggressive peaceful outlook on unifying the galaxy resonates with my own views of how humanity should unify through technology and individual strengths.
I have my own army of Tau I’ve painted in a color pallet I have yet to see. It is an Earth caste combat engineer company lead by Fire warriors and an ethereal with a story focusing on obtaining alien relics to further advance Tau tech for the Greater Good.
This was a great deep dive, looking forward to more.

The way the Tau empire makes first contact and offers to help other worlds reminds me of a Stargate SG-1 episode. The Stargate team starts negotiations with an advanced culture who offers them all technology they could ever dream of. Unfortunately the cynical nature of the team forces them to dig deeper and they find out the advanced civilization purposefully causes a large amount of the population to become sterile. They then use the remaining population after a couple generations to work the fields and collect resources for the homeworld.

I posted one long post before I watched this, and then wanted to see if you touched on something:
Nagi, and the role as Advisor to Ethereal.
It was my hope that you would have had some more information on this group of Tau-Allies past the single paragraph we seem to have access to. That paragraph, however, raises so many questions in just a few short sentences. I simply can not over look the existence of these worm like beings due to two facts - The Nagi are Telepathic by nature (dun dun dunnnnnn), and the Tau fought them in a long and drawn out war.
That ended with a Nagi being present beside the Ethereal, since the peace accords.
A position I can't stop feeling was the Ethereal's doing, not the Nagi....

Long shot, and it shows how much I obsess over these loose threads -
What if the Nagi are the answer to another of my problems, the Tau allies and Chaos.
These Nagi are telepathic, and the Warp is attracted to telepaths, so... detect evil charms to protect Ethereal?

I am new to 40K and your videos have answered so many of the questions I've had. Thank You. So far out of all the races/empires i have learned about the Tau seem the most benevolent of them all. They dont out right enslave you or murder you as soon as they lay eyes on you while every one else does. If i had to live in the hellscape that is the 41st century I'd absolutely want to live on a Tau controlled world.

As someone who likes 40k just for the figures, I LOVE when someone explains a race for me. I believe this vid could be even longer if you went full depth (Ive heard 40k has multiple books of lore to know before somewhat understand) and I would watch. Cool pics, nice narrative, all in all well done. Id love to see Tyranids or the black corrupted space marines (the ones that use machines to upgrade themselves and use suffering and all that). Those two seem amazingly awesome and violent.
