Marvin was one of the first to start advocating for Mother Earth. His warm, rich voice is so badly missed. 💔

This was written by Marvin Gaye and recorded by him in early 70s. Marvin was way ahead of his time, writing this song about the environment and writing about war and racism ( What’s Going On). He was a musical genius at Motown and sometimes conflicted with Berry Gordy about his song choices. Marvin had great insight and it’s sad to think of how he died. Rolling Stone ranked What’s Going On as in the top 5 of best songs ever. We miss you Marvin. R.I.P. 🙏💔

Those of us who were lucky enough to grow up hearing the great music from MOTOWN and other labels for around 20 years found it hard to appreciate what replaced it in popular black music, It will never be the same. So glad to have it all in my collection,

I think this was the first album where Marvin Gaye had creative control. When he’s under contract with Motown, they wouldn’t have allowed him to do songs that were so political. This song is just as relevant today as when it was written.

Classic song from a classic album. PS. Industrial pollution in the US had grown so bad by the end of the nineteen sixties that some rivers were catching fire. Toxic dumping was so bad in some places that young children were dying of cancer and worse. Automobile exhaust mixed with fog to create smog, air pollution so poisonous it could ruin agricultural crops overnight. This song came out a year before Congress passed the law creating the Environmental Protection Agency (aka EPA), so before there was much if any environmental regulation. Many people take clean air and water for granted today and seem unaware that some politicians running for national office want to tear down all environmental regulations because they simply do not care about the environment and do not want to pay for protecting it and would rather lie to themselves and others about environmental science than admit to their indifference or the avarice and greed of the polluters who support them.

My favorite thing about this song is Marvin Gaye singing in the background "Have mercy Father, please have mercy. This song is actually an Intercessory prayer for us who are destroying ourselves and the Earth.

I was schooled on great music by my Dad and uncles and when I heard this on a 45, I was like, why is this so short. My Dad said you gotta listen to the whole album this was off of, What's Going On, cause all the songs blend together perfectly. Pure genius and I will definitely be suggesting more from this masterpiece.

one big cosmic shindig. All the musicians went deep and and Marvin sang true.

Marvin Gaye is a very deep rabbit hole that you MUST go down! Such an amazing catalog! I would make a suggestion, but there are just too many, and I love every one of them! Three off the top of my head: "Inner City Blues", "What's Going on", "Got To Give It Up". Thanks for another great reaction, JM! ✌💙✌

"The Funk Brothers".... MOTOWN House Band For Marvin, The Miracles, Supremes. Four Tops, Temptations, all of the best from "HITSVILLE"USA. A group of Detroit-based session musicians who performed the backing to most Motown recordings from 1959 until the company moved to Los Angeles in 1972. Its members are considered among the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history.

Pollution was really bad in the 70s. The Cuyahoga river in Ohio caught on fire and they couldn't put it out. Three Mile Island (nuclear reactor) in the US had a meltdown. People littered a lot. Richard Nixon passed the Clean Air & Clean Water Acts and we cleaned some of these things up.

This makes me sad that no one makes this kind of music anymore . . . . Marvin Gaye, Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, etc . . . all gone. I guess its all part of the process of time. This will never happen again, but I am so goad I was there when it happened. I was in high school when this came out. Thanks.

I highly recommend two other versions of this song- "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You" by Robert Palmer and "What's Going On/Mercy Mercy Me"(live version off his album "On The Road"[1976](I was at that show in Seattle/Paramount Northwest- I was 19- right up front on the balcony- awesome acoustics- I'm sure it's why he released his Live album being recorded there.....your friend from the Pacific Northwest(Seattle)- Wayne Maher.....

If Marvin doesn’t give you the chills, check yourself you’re dead. Yes, they have know our fish is full of mercury even then, now they say don’t even eat tuna more than once a week. Oh, and don’t eat thick fillets, they are older fish and hold more mercury than younger, on and on the rules for safety eating from our poisoned seas goes…eat at your own risk. Wonder how much is in the scallops I’m eating for dinner…
