Marvin was one of the first to start advocating for Mother Earth. His warm, rich voice is so badly missed. 💔
This was written by Marvin Gaye and recorded by him in early 70s. Marvin was way ahead of his time, writing this song about the environment and writing about war and racism ( What’s Going On). He was a musical genius at Motown and sometimes conflicted with Berry Gordy about his song choices. Marvin had great insight and it’s sad to think of how he died. Rolling Stone ranked What’s Going On as in the top 5 of best songs ever. We miss you Marvin. R.I.P. 🙏💔
The man hated the federal government and god bless him for doing so
The late, GREAT Marvin Gaye! No one could do it any better! LOVE THIS SONG!
Marvin's Inner City Blues is a must listen. I grew up in Detroit in this time period. Great memories.
Those of us who were lucky enough to grow up hearing the great music from MOTOWN and other labels for around 20 years found it hard to appreciate what replaced it in popular black music, It will never be the same. So glad to have it all in my collection,
There are very few albums that can be considered a masterpiece……..this is one of them.
One of my Absolute favorites from the Late, Great MARVIN GAYE!
Simply a beautiful song, and still relevant.
Marvin was one of the most smoothest singers ever!
"Inner City Blues" is one of best songs.
The Great Marvin Gaye !!!
The Brilliant Marvin Gaye !!!..... :)
I think this was the first album where Marvin Gaye had creative control. When he’s under contract with Motown, they wouldn’t have allowed him to do songs that were so political. This song is just as relevant today as when it was written.
1971,,,, 16 years old, hear this song for the first time,,,, have the album less than 4 hours later.... "What's Going On"...... WOW
Gaye was one of the best vocalists.of all time. A voice as smooth as butter on a hot day.
❤❤Oh thank you !! I've always loved hearing Marvin Gaye. Even when i was a little bitty kid. RIP Marvin❤
Classic song from a classic album. PS. Industrial pollution in the US had grown so bad by the end of the nineteen sixties that some rivers were catching fire. Toxic dumping was so bad in some places that young children were dying of cancer and worse. Automobile exhaust mixed with fog to create smog, air pollution so poisonous it could ruin agricultural crops overnight. This song came out a year before Congress passed the law creating the Environmental Protection Agency (aka EPA), so before there was much if any environmental regulation. Many people take clean air and water for granted today and seem unaware that some politicians running for national office want to tear down all environmental regulations because they simply do not care about the environment and do not want to pay for protecting it and would rather lie to themselves and others about environmental science than admit to their indifference or the avarice and greed of the polluters who support them.
My favorite thing about this song is Marvin Gaye singing in the background "Have mercy Father, please have mercy. This song is actually an Intercessory prayer for us who are destroying ourselves and the Earth.
I was schooled on great music by my Dad and uncles and when I heard this on a 45, I was like, why is this so short. My Dad said you gotta listen to the whole album this was off of, What's Going On, cause all the songs blend together perfectly. Pure genius and I will definitely be suggesting more from this masterpiece.
Played a version of this for my 17 yo w/Marvin playing piano and singing this song. He was so taken! Timeless!
Marvin Gaye. Wow. Such a beautiful artist! The Ecology Song ❤😊
This is a classic. This real music.
Marvin Marvin RIP
It really is the greatest pop, soul, rhythm +blues album ever recorded. The whole thing is like
one big cosmic shindig. All the musicians went deep and and Marvin sang true.
If this isn't a classic, I don't know it is! ✌️❤️🤟🥁
The melody is sooooo good, even as an instrumental it makes you feel emotional 🎶🎵💚
The ending is so haunting.
Marvin Gaye is a very deep rabbit hole that you MUST go down! Such an amazing catalog! I would make a suggestion, but there are just too many, and I love every one of them! Three off the top of my head: "Inner City Blues", "What's Going on", "Got To Give It Up". Thanks for another great reaction, JM! ✌💙✌
💙marvin gaye 💙
Truly classic music. I was actually in high skool when this came out. Very good belly rubbin music.
Another MOTOWN LEGEND..... I suggested this months ago and the Robert Palmer version with "I Want You" medley added . Glad to add it to your folder. Thanks a for another great reaction.
I love this song! Thank you!
Timeless....amazing Marvin.
This whole album is fire! What's Going On was an album he had to fight to get made. This album from start to finish is straight fire! Someday, even if you dont react to it, give it a listen from beginning to end. This and the Trouble Man soundtrack were staples in my house growing up ❤
Listen to "I want you" by Marvin Gaye. It is such a great song of his. He was really quite a genius.
Looking at your face and his side by side, you could be his brother. Amazing song.
That was probably Marvin on the piano.
"The Funk Brothers".... MOTOWN House Band For Marvin, The Miracles, Supremes. Four Tops, Temptations, all of the best from "HITSVILLE"USA. A group of Detroit-based session musicians who performed the backing to most Motown recordings from 1959 until the company moved to Los Angeles in 1972. Its members are considered among the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history.
this whole album is best listened to as a piece. at the time concept albums were the norm. my top 3 desert island disc. I was a senior in high school, 17, when this came out and it has never left me.
Pollution was really bad in the 70s. The Cuyahoga river in Ohio caught on fire and they couldn't put it out. Three Mile Island (nuclear reactor) in the US had a meltdown. People littered a lot. Richard Nixon passed the Clean Air & Clean Water Acts and we cleaned some of these things up.
That was one cool brother !
This makes me sad that no one makes this kind of music anymore . . . . Marvin Gaye, Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, etc . . . all gone. I guess its all part of the process of time. This will never happen again, but I am so goad I was there when it happened. I was in high school when this came out. Thanks.
I highly recommend two other versions of this song- "Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You" by Robert Palmer and "What's Going On/Mercy Mercy Me"(live version off his album "On The Road"[1976](I was at that show in Seattle/Paramount Northwest- I was 19- right up front on the balcony- awesome acoustics- I'm sure it's why he released his Live album being recorded there.....your friend from the Pacific Northwest(Seattle)- Wayne Maher.....
He was living in Los Angeles, CA.
Icon 😢
How much overcrowded land can she stand
Marvin was one of the great ones..Sad ,his father killed him.
Yeah, so sad. As far as I know he was shot when trying to break up an altercation between his parents.
If you really want to hear what we were doing back in the day? Pull some Curtis Mayfield. He will blow your mind.
3 Mile Island 1979
I think he was talking about the radiation that came from atom bomb testing underground
If Marvin doesn’t give you the chills, check yourself you’re dead. Yes, they have know our fish is full of mercury even then, now they say don’t even eat tuna more than once a week. Oh, and don’t eat thick fillets, they are older fish and hold more mercury than younger, on and on the rules for safety eating from our poisoned seas goes…eat at your own risk. Wonder how much is in the scallops I’m eating for dinner…
“Make Me Wanna Hollar” ( Hold Up My Hands) about the crap still going on today. Poverty, Vietnam, police brutality, etc
How does a father shoot and kill a son with that beautiful of a soul? So tragic.
Robert Palmer's version is cool, but Marvin is the man.
