- When you install an aftermarket car audio system you may want to use a phone or a high-res player as sort of an auxiliary input, but your source unit may not allow for this which means you may need to send signal directly into the amplifier. If you do so, how can you set up a DSP system to keep some sounds from the existing head unit, while still using the auxiliary device as the main system sound? Let's discuss!

Car Audio Fabrication - Master Car Audio - Design, Build, Install
i had exactly zero install experience bout 6 months ago. and i wanted a basic system. watching all your videos have literally crammed years of knowledge into a few videos. very specific and well broken down every video you have made has been not only informational but interesting as well.
I've been going crazy the last 24hrs trying to choose between the D6 1200 and the VX800 8I. This is right on time just what I needed. Thnnx
Man you are awesome in the way you teach us your viewers about car audio
I appreciate that! Thanks for being here!
You should make a video detailing what it looks like running either a hi-res player to digital/toslink or cutting into OEM spdif as main source; like as far as gain matching the components, setting the levels in DSP, and maybe some initial EQing. Ive been having an EXTREMELY difficult time finding straight forward information on this and unfortunately it's the only option in my Kia Stinger. Love the channel, BTW!
Ive used both the toslink and coaxial digital inputs on my dm608. I ended up sticking with the coaxial due to its wider dynamic range and volume difference compared to the optical. (Make sure to use a 75ohm coaxial cable) Your source at max level will be 0db and should not have any distortion due to it being digital. I say “should” because this all depends on the quality of your source, I had an Android that sounded terrible at max and kept overloading my output stage. You will not have any gain adjustment on your input stage since there is no analog to digital conversion, its already done by the sources DAC. Just maximize your output section and set your amp gains accordingly.
@@avhuffTeamOtis ok that makes sense... Much appreciated!!
This is great. I own a VXi amp and I want to use the Toslink, even though I have not heard it in person yet and cant find much on that through RUclips. Highly appreciate the content. From those of us who watch multiple times, thank you.
My ESX DSP has an optical input and optical output. I wanted to try it out with my phone, so I just used an external USB sound card with optical out. The phone recognized and powered the card when it was connected via USB, and optical connection worked as expected. I ended up using the deck anyway because I missed the additional options provided by the deck, e.g. subwoofer level.
@@Grommet2007 was the difference noticeable in quality?
@@ceavalencia4767 I thought I heard a difference (the deck uses an older version of BT), but it was not enough of a difference for me to give up the additional features that the deck provides.
I have two sources; both with optical (TOSLINK) outputs…
1.) OEM head unit -> FiX 82
2.) iPhone -AirPlay-> AirPort Express
I want to run both of the optical signals to my VX1000/5i, which feeds analog signal to my HD600/4 (RCA).
I also have the TwK-D8 set aside to sell, but I could use it if it helps with my setup using the AirPort Express with the OEM head unit - both outputting optical signals.
I bought the VX1000/5i to replace a HD900/5, since the VX1000/5i comes with DSP built in.
I’ve thought about putting the TwK-D8 after the the FiX 82, so that I can send RCA to the VX1000/5i as well as the optical signal from the AirPort Express since the VX1000/5i has both optical and RCA inputs; though it seems like overkill, a waste of money, and I’m not even sure if it would solve my issue…
I use exactly the system you shown. Love it. So simple.
Nice break down Mark!
Thank you Mark, I'll be saving this video for when I get started on my set up. Always good info from you.
Very helpful to have you walk through the DSP software, thank you
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and posting
Finally! I was hoping you’d do a video on this topic! Thanks Mark! Great vid!
Appreciate it, thanks for being a part of the community!
Thanks 👍 and blessings for you and all you followers
Right back at ya!
People usually don't think of that honestly.
For a few years I used my high end digital analogue player connected directly to my amp with aux to RCA.
It saved me the hassle of buying a expensive head unit $500+ and having better specs and quality.
It's crazy how bad car audio components are these days for head units. The dac chips and performance and measuring is god awful and worse than a $100 desktop dac.
The SP2000 hires DAP using 2.5mm coax cable-to-rca connected to the rca ports on the DSP.
Any advice on how to bypass a Bose system in a new Hyundai Tucson. From what I’ve heard you can just rip it out and add a aftermarket amp. Love the videos,
Would be awesome to see the different ways to physically wire the phone. Kinda like a part 2 for this cideo
I wish I could get you to do a full build on my 2023 Ford Bronco 2dr Badlands.
Hey mark can you talk a little about sundown or d4s it would be much appreciated I really like them I’m a bit bass heavy but I do like quality sounds too
I use iPhone Amazon music hd to apple camera connector, to topping d10 via usb, to helix dsp ultra and now helix p six via coax. Easiest way to play cd and some high res in an audiophile system. I’ve been doing this now for 3 years. Prior to that I used the hec usb in a p six in my last car but it never worked very well and had compatibility issues. Current way gives no errors, but is temperamental with cable length that goes from the phone to the camera adapter.
I just built a subwoofer box and putt brand new sub and amp in it. How should I play the music, can listen to music as usual with high volum or should I take it easy in the beginning?
Thank for the video. My problem I have experienced is that if you feed the DSP on 2 signals the output quality is not that good . I have a Front row feeding a Rockford fosgat 360.3 4 signals and it sounds much better however if you have better way of doing it,because I'd like to remove the Front row from the system .
Thank you
Ronald
For the VXi amps is it 100% required to go the RCAs taking up two of the inputs? I have a VX800/8i all inputs taken and was curious to use the optical In. Can the JL do this or should I free up two inputs?
Also, can the preamp out from the VXi go to an XD600x1v2 for the subwoofer signal so I can create a high res input and have all sound essentially controlled by the VXi?
I have similar questions/different setup. Currently, I have two sources; both with optical (TOSLINK) outputs…
1.) OEM head unit -> FiX 82
2.) iPhone -AirPlay-> AirPort Express
I want to run both of the optical signals to my VX1000/5i, which feeds analog signal to my HD600/4 (RCA).

I have a USB-C to RCA cable I was going to use from my phone directly to my DSP input but I wouldn't have front and rear fade since it's only 2 channels technically.
I still may do this just for fun, but I will have to sum some of my inputs on my DSP so it knows to use my 2 channels of input to multiply them into my 6 channels of output to my 6 channel amplifier.
I have a decent Pioneer head unit so I don't really need to do this.
I'm thinking about using a Microsoft Surface tablet as my main source eventually.
That way I can run the full software for my DSP and play whatever programs from the tablet (music, video etc) to the DSP directly.
I would then be able to mount the tablet in my center console in front of my arm rest and have everything at my finger tips.
I just haven't figured out what would go in my head unit hole on the dash.... Maybe boost gauges (when I get around to installing a turbo on my engine). Maybe other various gauges to read engine stats, maybe even a screen that would just be a second monitor or mirror the Surface tablet. I could then have a widget on that screen showing what music or video source is playing from on the tablet.
It's a big task and it would take awhile (and $) to setup. This is my dream setup though someday. Since it's in my 97 Dakota I don't have to deal with all of the onboard computer shit like in newer vehicles.
I plan to make a show worthy truck out of the bitch one day.
It's currently lowered with airbags and has many engine and cosmetic upgrades.
But these days everything is expensive and it's taken me about 5 years to get to the point I'm at.
I've got some rusty body work and paint issues I'm going to address before anything else. Currently teaching myself how to do body work correctly so I don't have to pay to get it done.
Mark, thank you for the video - just in time! I've been debating between AudioControl and JL amplifiers, which one in your opinion sounds better?
Can't go wrong with either, they are both amazing.
Hi Derrick just watched your review on Puzu and it really got me interested. It seemed to be a really good product not to mention its very good price point. Since your video was from 3 yrs ago, may i know if the puzu products you’ve used are still as good? Thanks
Hi. Once you built an amp rack and used risers to run power wire under the amps. Can you tell me what you used?? Thx
Can you do a small tutorial on the Rockford Fosgate 360.3 dsp?
Great content. I have a 2019 GMC Sierra. I'm trying to add a HAM and a CB to my AUX input. Do I need a switcher/mixer of some sort? I'm having a hard time finding info on the HAM. It almost seems like one band is the right channel and the other band is the left channel. Any experience with this?
@CarAudioFabrication Hey Mark..so if im upgrading my car audio using dsp and my car oem head unit is not of good quality.. should i consider upgrading the headunit?
Connecting our smartphones to dsp via HU ( like alpine/pioneer by taking optical op to dsp) and connecting a DAP directly to dsp coaxially/BT have a difference in quality? Or only people like you can see the difference..even if its a good HU the source must be clean right ?
Is it better to buy a good headunit or a DAP for source..in terms of reliability
And does playing of files from spotify app can pull out the full capability of speakers? Or should we rely on lossless files only?
Hi mark! First I wanna say thank you! I love your videos all the great info! I have a question , I have a 2020 Silverado custom with the 7in screen non Bose .. I’m planing on running 2 amps a mono block and a 4ch amp both Rockford Fosgate, I will be replacing all 4 door speakers and adding subs as well, my question is .. should I run the audio control lc7 or should I run the lc2 pro .?
You should get a floating headunit. Sony, Kenwood, jvc, or alpine. The sound resolution coming from those decks are impeccable. Just add a maestro to retain all functions.
hey i got a question for you, my brothers subwoofer keeps turning on and off with long intervals. I thought it was a loose wire terminal, because id notice the subwoofer "rumble" before waking up, and playing normally, like the wire is vibrating on the terminal or something, causing the bass to sound very strange until it goes back to normal. thing is, to fix it, he welded the wires onto a metal loop that fits into the terminals screws. at this point, I think the amplifier itself has a loose component.
CAN YOU CONNECT TO THE BLUETOOTH ADAPTER FOR A SUB AMP AND THE BLUETOOTH ON YOUR CAR AT THE SAME TIME AND THE AUDIO BE SYNCED
I have an unrelated question. If I factor order a new vehicle, should I upgrade the stereo system with them or go with an aftermarket? Would they sound the same?
Honest answer.. which dsp do you find better out of JL and Audio Control
I have a 5 channel amp and a 1 channel mono amp. Can i just connect them together like a 4 channel and a 1 channel mono amplifier?
What can I run with Zen a2b in-between it and my amps so can i can use a phone or tablet... preferably with an aux or Bluetooth capabilities
Hey Mark how are you. i have a new alpine hds-990 with internal dsp. do you recommend a separate DSP unit, or can i use the internal dsp for save some money?. is a significant difference ?
I was looking into that unit. Decided on Sony GS9. Hope Mark answers your question?
External DSP always. There is not a single head unit in existence that has all the functionality of a dedicated DSP. Not to mention "tuning" on the face of a head unit is just not practical at all. Need a connected PC.
@@CarAudioFabrication Thanks for your answer and help
That's how I listen to music to my home stereo system
Same here, how do you apply power to the amplifier? I'm using a modified desktop power supply unit to supply power and ground to the amplifier. Do you know if there is a better way?
Yeah. There are power supplies from companies like Taramps or Powermax just built to provide high current (120, 160 or even 250 amps) at 14.4V to power high power car audio systems at home. Works great when paired with an AGM battery for extra reserve@@wilsonvinas5906
Is it possible to run two different brand monoblocks together? Do you know the true 1ohm rms output on a 3000 watt quantum monoblock by chance?
Is there a specific reason why no company seems to make a 12v powered USB input device for phones that will stream music straight to a DSP or amp and also charge your phone at the same time? I get that there are tons of Bluetooth options but for us weirdos that want the full sound quality out of our phone for a headless system, there are almost no options. Even the way you've outlined here, you're using the headphone jack of the phone which introduces it's own audio degradation issues. (not to mention the annoying lack of headphone jacks on many newer phones) Ideally a device that's taking the USB output of the phone through a halfway decent DAC and outputting line level RCA, with some sort of volume control knob would be fantastic. Probably not going to happen as it would be very niche but a kid can dream!
While there may not be specific devices that are purpose built for this application there are certainly multiple nerd-like solutions that are available for guys like us.
There are plenty of options. I use an iphone with a usb camera adapter and plug into a Topping D10S, from there I go coaxial digital to my dm608 and use the audiocontrol remote for level control. I think it sounds amazing. Im using Tidal Hifi + getting 24/96 from my phone until it hits the dm608 dacs, which then down samples to 48khz. Im probably gonna upgrade to a Mosconi dsp in the near future.
@@avhuffTeamOtis
I own the topping d10s and that is a great option. I can't see why it would downsample though. I believe that there is a way to get hi res audio
@@avhuffTeamOtis
I'm sure that 48khz still sounds excellent
@@drrckhamilton Well the dm608 downsamples it. Its all their capable of
This specifically the audiocontrol DSP or. Anothrr question is i have a amp with builtin DSP. The amps dsp software is terrible, do i have to use that software or if i make changes to my phone audio player still process through the dsp. I mean is the processing of the dsp universal based on the amps hardware
I have a problem with my car audio being quieter after i installed a 5 channel amp to power 4 door speakers and 1 sub. I am only using one hi level input for the signal tapping into the rear left speaker output coming from the factory headunit. Is this the cause of bad quality and quiet levels?
If I install a alpine era-g320 or a reg. Dsp can I use a kenwood 6042a or 4042a equalizer to fine tune songs on the fly instead of clicking buttons?..or Is the external analog eq overkill?
So I have the 6 channel audio control amp in my truck and I have a metra t harness with speaker level inputs feeding the amp. I just found out my problem with the sound is that the stock dodge uconnect headunit is internally amplified. There is no way around it. Would this Bluetooth chip solve my problem?
Could i keep the speaker level inputs for chimes and run the chip to my phone for a cleaner non amplified signal?
I have a video idea, how to equalize with modern music?, my idea is now a days what track helps you to equalize and for what genre... Or what's the deference of Flac, thx mark! saludos desde Mexico
On the DM-608, the coaxial input above the optical digital input is used for hi-Res players? And will it switch automatically from original source?
It is used for digital audio via a 75ohm coaxial cable. I use it for hi res yes. Whats the switching question? You select the input you want to distribute. The coaxial is input 5, so on the input section you would sum your outputs to 5-6.
how do i connect 3 amps to a 4x8 DSP? don't see any of your vid's that can help with this. amps are 2 4channels and 1 1channel for sub.
Hi, thanks for the great educational videos, question! Are 6.5 better or sound better than 6x9? I’m debating on doing the switch since I’m upgrading my factory front speakers (6x9) and going with components 6.5 instead. Would sound better? I already have a aftermarket amplifier for all the speakers.
Respectfully either isn’t better than the other. There are various power ratings frequency ranges and applications for both so it’s not the shape you should worry about it’s the ratings and specs you should focus on. Stay away from max watts look for the term rms power for both the amplifier and the speakers. Match ohm loads for optimal usage of your amplifier and do research on using a eq or a crossover on your equipment
If you're running the factory head unit make sure you get your signal to the amp then too the aftermarket speakers. You didn't mention the head unit, so I assumed.
Factory *head unit* or music sources have bass roll-off blockers in them that do not allow lower frequencies to get to your factory speakers. If you install aftermarket speakers and run them from the factory unit they will be underpowered.
Also they may not run at the typical ohm rating of 4ohms which aftermarket drop in speakers are rated.
Your factory music source may put out 3ohm to a factory 6.5" speaker which can cause some issues.
Just make sure you do your homework on all the factors including ohms and RMS wattage ratings.
Some factory speakers run at 3ohms to pull more power from the factory source.
You can get a 6 and 1/2 component set that runs at 3 ohms and that helps but then you're still limited if the factory unit cuts off or rolls off your base frequencies
What about the valet connection?
Appreciate you!

What happened to Bluetooth Dsp. Everyone doesn’t want to do all that
Are these Bluetooth connectors high fidelity?
Check out the specs on the AudioControl one, it has AptX, definitely a solid piece.
BT is not high fidelity by definition, even with newest codecs it's additional loss compression in the signal pathway.
Ok, but what's the point on disabling BT input?
In reference to the AC amp? If you're not using the optional module there is no reason to have those inputs turned on.
I use this method with my dap
Will the DSP decode Dolby Atmos from the phone?
No it will not.
Which phones can output Atmos? Is it standalone software?
