Family Life at Fish Camp on the Yukon River - Summer 2018 - Stan Zuray

  • Salmon and other species of fish here migrate well over 1000 miles each summer to spawn. The Yukon River once had numerous fish camps that ran from the mouth to well into Canada full of families cutting a winters supply of fish for countless generations. Elders can still remember those days. While modern commercial overfishing and wild salmon food competition from huge hatchery operations have severely hurt some of these runs and the people and camps that relied on them, a significant number of families still raise their kids this way. Here's our camp 2018 style.

      No but a number of friends swear they have seen a version of Bigfoot they call by a number of other names. Don't think they are out and about in the winter as I never see their tracks. Must hibernate. Would love to meet one and some aliens also.

U can live on it every day if need to to survive the winter it's so tasty you wouldn't get sick of it some smoked salmon and bit of deer caribou moose goat bear, just about any type of red meat like those and salmon everyday is not only aaamazingly delicious but it's most PERFECT healthy diet a human being could live on.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  6 лет назад +1

      Usually they stay away. They have plenty of food in the spawning creeks and washing up on the beaches. My dogs let me know when they are around and passing by. Sometimes we get a bad bear and if he comes back 2x he's hanging in the smokehouse. They know that and that is what is different up here - the bears and wolves have that knowledge passed down and they stay away usually. Not like Yellowstone and the non shy bears.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  6 лет назад +3

      Actually it is a dying lifestyle but the danger is commercialization of the resource is way more harvest (and often too much) than the subsistence aspect.

    • @MistressOP
      @MistressOP 6 лет назад +2

      I think if there was better outreach maybe it wouldn't be dying everywhere. A lot of my hunting and fishing culture I grew up with is so caught up with the gun dumbest who leave whole carcasses except for the head they don't want to pack out. Wave their stupid gun around and leave beer cans everywhere. Out there with super expensive guns and like 2 or three of them randomly on their trucks like trophies. They don't understand that people subsistence hunting, gardening, all that jazz. Caught up with that gun prepper bullshit. If you can get half your food budget of 15,000 a year in 2 or 3 week weekends Everyone who is able body should be doing it as long as the resources can handle it. Giving the extras to those who don't hunt and finish helping out. Makes me so sad because the harvest is important for the wild. We are a part of the ecosystem and it's shaping. We killed off a lot of the large carnvors who would have been harvesting these anamils.

    Good Day once more Mr. Zuray and Family Too . While you were on Yukon Men , You did not say if you ever Harvested Bears . In the U S l'm sure there is different hunting rules for First People ( Native ) as in Seasons and so on . In Ontario , Fall is Black Bear Season . That I have eaten it kind of taists like Gamey Pork I like it , What about you ? If you don"t ask you don't Learn. Take Care Eh!

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  Год назад

      I used to harvest bears (grizzly and black) when before I was married to my native wife but now because the women in my household do not eat bear meat it makes no sense. In Tanana village most women were raised to believe it was not good for women particularly ones of childbearing age. Something like that.

    I know this may be a dumb question but I have always wondered why the flies don't contaminate the fish just drying out side in the open air? I know fish drying has been done for thousands of years but I always wanted to know why it can be done there while it can't be done here were I live in California. Thanks love your videos.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  4 года назад

      Insects and things like birds and rodents spread disease on food everywhere but only thing I might add is all those things are probably a heck of a lot more healthy, less contaminated and disease free than in the cities where I grew up. We all go to trouble to keep that stuff off food but it's not perfect.

    • @goboyz8016
      @goboyz8016 4 года назад

      @@stanzuray I get that, I do. I have been to Alaska many times with my Pop fishing and never had the stones to ask that question. I assumed it was because the right wind, time of year and such allows the fish to dry and protect it some while in the city it's just too hot and flies just ruin the meat so fast. Thanks and keep up the great work. Love the inspiration to DIY as I have always prided myself on doing my own work. Live well and free my friend.

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  6 лет назад

      That's over 150,000 fish a year. That is about what ADF&G considers to be the entire Alaska Yukon River drainage subsistence take was in some past years. It is a little high for now though mainly because of the severe decline in dog team use and dependence on snow machines now. That 150,000 figure is also the dog use and people food use combined. All that info is available each year from ADF&G surveys.

    Hi Stan my whitefish turned out great except some strips did not dry right through. They have a thick skin but when I squeeze them they are soft inside. Is that ok? Most of the fish dried nothing soft about them when I squeeze them. They taste so g😊😊d

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  4 года назад

      Strips dryatn different rates and are done atn different times. Some dry in half the time depending on thickness and oil content. For instance belly strips full of oil are slow drying next to back strips of the same thickness. Many like soft strips as they say they are more succulent. They do not keep like that and must be frozen of course.

    It is a real shame that we the people of Alaska cannot catch king salmon! Yet it is OK for that commercial fisherman to catch fish(king salmons)W.T.F?

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  6 лет назад

      Depends on where and run strength. For instance on the Yukon here 2007 was the last year fishermen could sell a king commercially because the run crashed. Since there have been some years the run is fully protected and no king fishing and some years limited fishing is allowed for subsistence only. This year and in the video you see some fishing taking place. We had no fishing in the beginning and then went to two 24 hr periods per week of fishing most of the season. Kings are all past now and it's open 7 days week now but most fishermen don't take much this time of the fall. Haven't fished myself for a week or more now.

      Good idea. Have some videos that show a little but need to show the whole thing intake pipes to the generator end. . Just talked to the developer in Canada that designed them. So carefree.

    Could you catch that oil that drips off and use it for cooking or other things? It has to be powerful

    • @stanzuray
      @stanzuray  Год назад

      Tried to hang tarps to collect it in the smokehouse but it's hard enough to move fish strips around in there as it is. Every time gave up on the idea. Most of the oil stays with the done product anyway.

      Don't grow as much stuff as I use to being at a fish camp all summer where the soil is shallow and rocky and on a hill side but got some great salad gardens here. The new film project (Stan Project) will show then.

    I wonder how long those natives have smoked fish there! The landscape looks tiered and flattened near those smoking prep pads and sheds, like it’s been used for centuries!
