Guy's been surfing there for 9 years now. Started there at 14 years of age. Crazy. Those waves look so much bigger in person, even an IMAX screen doesn't compare. Definitely legendary status!
I froze the screen a few times when it looked the biggest and measured with a caliper. The largest ratio i measured was 12 times his height. Being generous using 6’ even though he’s bent gives you about 72’. Huge wave for sure, but don’t think it was close to 100. It might measure a little more if there is a photo from a better perspective. Hopefully someone got some good pics of the ride.
When I go back and forth looking at Nazare and this wave it doesn’t appear to be 108’. However must be biggest wave skillfully and gracefully surfed at Mavericks.
I agree but maybe it's an optical illusion? Nazare waves look much bigger and saying this is 20-30 ft bigger than the previous record doesn't make sense to me
The whole time I was watching this, all I could think about is Jay moriarity... what an incredible wave by Alo Slebir but I just know Jay was watching like holy smokes! Incredible
@@CorePathway The wave in Portugal is almost always photographed from the top of the cliff, and that angle makes it more difficult to accurately judge wave height because it's difficult to see where the base of the wave is. Leads to over-estimates.
Damned impressive and Jeff Clark says it's the biggest he's ever seen at Mavs (he should know) but it isn't any more than 80 feet where he is surfing it. Maybe taller at the peak, but he didn't drop in from the peak.
Everything moves in cycles. So, twice a century, the ocean let's us know just how small we really are. A storm comes out of Antarctica, tearing up the Pacific, and it sends a huge swell north 2,000 miles. And when it hits Bells Beach, it'll turn into the biggest surf this planet has ever seen. And I will be there.
It's definitely much hollower than Nazare but not as tall if that is the criteria, incredibly enjoyable to watch as the thickness of the barrel is unfathomable. Nazare looks like ants on a ski slope, this one of the most magnificent barrels ever ridden!

because waves viewed from that hill/ tower on the bluff makes the waves look way bigger than if you take a video from the water level, thats why they look softer an mushier but gigantic , if you take the video from below and "straight on" waves will looks steeper but the face will look smaller

Santa Cruz surfer here: I have so much respect for this guy! I’m not even *half* as talented as he is! For reference, I *used to* think I was good because I moved from Cowell’s to Steamer Lane. 🤦🏻♂️
I did the same thing as you - I don't think it's 100ft but you're very close to my estimate and even Jeff Clark said "Biggest wave ever seen at Mavericks." Crazy how clean the face was too. Amazing wave!
Correct me if Im wrong, but as a non surfer whose jumped off more than a few big ass rocks in the mountains, to me this looks like 40 - 50ft tops. Not sure where they're getting 100
These people that are not saying it's not 100-ft wave don't know how to measure have no perception of height it is definitely almost 100 ft or 108 just like they said
At the 0:06 second mark he is crouching down, which puts him roughly around 5ft tall. If you take his 5ft tall stance and continue to stack it from the trough of the wave to the crest of the wave it puts the wave height at roughly 70-80 feet. Still Gigantic, but not 100’
I give way more respect to the paddle in guys than the tow in guys. He may have caught the biggest wave ever but the setup makes it so much easier and safer to catch these monster waves. Catching a 20-25 foot Hawaiian style at Waimea is way more difficult than these tow waves IMOH.
If that video is the actual wave and question that’s nowhere near 100 foot wave. Look at the waves Lenny in those guys are serving in Nazaré and compare the size of the surfer to the wave. The waves and Nas are way way larger than that wave by comparison. gases, this wave will be measured at 70 or 80 feet
One of the heaviest waves ever ridden; but if one guy is 6'5 210 and slow the other guy is 6'0 230 and fast af whos bigger? Who's badder? Who you got??
guinness world records guys are claiming 108 not mavs guys. normal people measure waves from face height, and I'd would trust someone who knows how to use image analysis to determine wave height over a surfer eyeballing it.
that wave in nazare only looks bigger because its a straight A frame half of these kooks commenting wouldn't understand because they only come out when its 2-3 onshore summer mush
well, I was waiting to see him climb it, but it looks like he got out of there right quick. I can't ride a tricycle with training wheels, but as a fan, I'm disappointed . . . . .Missed opportunity.
This guy just shot himself into legendary status with one wave
Guy's been surfing there for 9 years now. Started there at 14 years of age. Crazy. Those waves look so much bigger in person, even an IMAX screen doesn't compare. Definitely legendary status!
Anyone out there is legend in my book, but that was a wave for the ages.
Man i thought this comment was headed in a totally different direction after reading the first few words lol
If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love.
Living legend, I am not worthy. That was an epic ride with the luxury of a quality video.
Alfter the wave broke behind him, it splashed a hundred feet! It’s his, he owns it, that was a 108 foot wave! Congrats brah, you’re a living legend.

@@daversjagreed. Wave isn't even close to 100. I don't even understand how this is being debated
That is, without a doubt, one of the heaviest waves ever caught on film. And he surfed it perfectly.
That was me riding that wave, in my dreams. Happy New Year
DUDE...EPIC DUDE! Half Moon Bay? INSANE!

The way you capture the weight of the water, amazing!!
Love your footage! ❤
One of the biggest Mavs waves I’ve seen but 60-70ft
It doesn't look like 100 ft from this angle to me. But it was a damn big wave for sure.
Agree.
Must be the angle, that wave in Portugal looks bigger
@@CorePathway The wave in Portugal is almost always photographed from the top of the cliff, and that angle makes it more difficult to accurately judge wave height because it's difficult to see where the base of the wave is. Leads to over-estimates.
From the angle of my couch looks about 3.75 inches tall. How is this a record?
@@Anthony-wp7tz lol
That was sheer amazement , he rode it perfectly from go to woe.
Epic! No words!
Impressive for sure! This guy is insane btw! 😂
Epically huge, huge wave that I would've $hit my pants on but there has to be a distinction between tow-in vs paddle-in wave records.
Damned impressive and Jeff Clark says it's the biggest he's ever seen at Mavs (he should know) but it isn't any more than 80 feet where he is surfing it. Maybe taller at the peak, but he didn't drop in from the peak.

I thought it had him at the bottom for a second. Great ride.
How can it get any better than that? Wow
Maybe with audio lol
Huge for Mavericks but that isn’t 108 feet tall.
Surfer Magazine as well as SFGATE are currently reporting that it's officially a 108-footer and that Guiness World Records is close to certifying.
No wayyyyy that’s 100ft
80 max
Amazing wave and excellent ride but 70' max.
All you have to do is compare it to the ride of Sebastian Steudtner at Nazare which is clearly bigger
1/2 that. Still epic. Why lie.
Absolutely mental! Huge beast.
It's definitely much hollower than Nazare but not as tall if that is the criteria, incredibly enjoyable to watch as the thickness of the barrel is unfathomable. Nazare looks like ants on a ski slope, this one of the most magnificent barrels ever ridden!
Second-hand gut churn just from the stills. What a monster. That's like an apartment building of water.
WOW !!! Good job!! I'm impressed. Always wanted to be a surfer, but to old and afraid of sharks.

Hope you stick with it. Surfing's the source... change your life... swear to God.
Most perfect wave I’ve ever seen there! Evil Knievel shit right there
Looks like fun
the power of that wave must be incredible.
Its just water
Why do the Nazare waves seem twice as high
because waves viewed from that hill/ tower on the bluff makes the waves look way bigger than if you take a video from the water level, thats why they look softer an mushier but gigantic , if you take the video from below and "straight on" waves will looks steeper but the face will look smaller
Europeans are small
Normaly when i go to the beach the waves seem smaler when i see them from the sand, when i went into the water its always bigger
It's basic dog psychology, if you scare them and get them peeing down their leg, they submit. But if you project weakness, that promotes violence, and that's how people get hurt.
@@bradenrodriguez5183 WHOA WHOA WHOA No way BELLS. Is bigger than Waimea bro.
Very impressive!
from this angle it looks small but from other videos of it looks gigantic
Why do we not have some standard "video calipers" available for this by now?
Monster🎉
Congratulations just read ur story on Yahoo and wow you made it look easy champ
It’s the wave from Interstellar
YEAH BUDDY!!

Biggest wave I have ever seen footage of at Mavericks
Massive legendary wave. But the eyeball test sure doesn’t say 100+. Angles matter tho. But still. Numerous ridden waves on film look as big or bigger.
I'm measuring about 15 times his height crouched over - maybe 5 ft x 15 or 75 footer. Biggest Mavs I've ever seen for sure.
I got the same but he is the foreground so depending on how far in front of the wave he is makes the wave look smaller.
I did the same thing as you - I don't think it's 100ft but you're very close to my estimate and even Jeff Clark said "Biggest wave ever seen at Mavericks." Crazy how clean the face was too. Amazing wave!
I wanna hear what it sounded like 🤯
I can't believe how FAR he faded on the takeoff, and then stalled again, just the lip was coming over.
The angle is throwing everyone off, this angle will make any eyeball guesstimate short of the actual size of the wave
Correct me if Im wrong, but as a non surfer whose jumped off more than a few big ass rocks in the mountains, to me this looks like 40 - 50ft tops. Not sure where they're getting 100
Massive wave. Doesn't look 108 ft. But stellar ride and unreal
hope he wins
big ups to this legend. how do you even get on that surfboard when your balls are that gigantic! unreal
19' Hawaiian?
20 tops. : )

That wave does not look anywhere near as big as peak waves from places like Nazaré, Jaws, and Waimea Bay. Honestly it looks like about a 50ft wave.
Bigger than Waimea bro
Biggest mavericks wave I ever remember see
Dude......😮
15 times X that surfers height from base to crest. I don’t know how tall he is but that wave was uuuuugge! lol
I cant see how that is bigger than the nazare record
Imagine if he stalled and pulled into that cavern of a barrel...impossible to make but the picture wouldve been sci-fi looking

I think you just wrote a quadruple negative sentence. Are you a graduate of an Oakland school?
I don't understand it...seems like i've seen several waves ridden at Nazare that were way bigger than this.

Bigger than Waimea

That is a massive and beautiful wave, but it's not even close to 108'. I'd guess ~50', which is pretty amazing for a wave with power like that.
