  • Bonnie Franklin, the pert, redheaded actress who won fame as a divorced mom on the long-running sitcom "One Day at a Time," has died.
Family member say she died Friday due to complications from pancreatic cancer. She was 69.
Her family had announced she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2012.
Though she already had stage and TV credits, "One Day at a Time" made her a star with its premiere in 1975. She played a divorced single mother raising two teenage girls, costars Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips.
The series ran on CBS for nine seasons, spending most of them as a Top 20 hit.
Franklin's recent credits include appearances on "The Young and the Restless" and the TV Land comedy "Hot in Cleveland," which reunited her with Bertinelli, one of that show's regulars.

I've always admired her resilience through what was somewhat of a nightmare of a early life and young adulthood. If anyone has read her heartbreaking autobiography, they will understand my comment. How she's maintained her mental and physical health is astonishing. Good vibes going out to her...

I never cared for the show, and hardly ever watched it. Many years ago, Miss Franklin was appearing in a local theater in the city I worked in. I was head waiter at a high end restaurant, and met a lot of celebrities who were in town. One very snowy night, we were very slow, so I decided it was time to clock out. I called a few friends to see if they’d meet me at another restaurant a block away. I walked in the other restaurant and it was very slow as well. My friends soon arrived, and as we sat at the bar gossiping with the bar tender, we asked if Bonnie Franklin had come in yet. Nobody had seen her. We started discussing how all of us weren’t big fans, and I brought up that Miss Franklin never walked into a scene on the show, she always seemed to be running. The others agreed and we were laughing quite a bit having fun. We suddenly heard the door open, we all turned to see who was coming in so late on such a cold snowy night. It was Bonnie Franklin. We all started laughing because we’d just talked about her the last 20 minutes. The hostess then seated her directly behind us at a table. We started laughing more because the whole thing was so silly. We couldn’t keep it together, so we called it a night, paid, and left. A few nights later, I was in the same restaurant, talking to the bar tender from the other evening. Bonnie walked in again, was seated by herself for dinner, and placed an order with her waiter. When he approached the service bar, I thought I felt bad about the other night and asked him what Miss Franklin was drinking. A glass of wine, so I said, I’ll buy Miss Franklin her her first drink. He took her wine to her, I saw him come back to me. “She wants to meet you and thank you”. I thought “oh shit”. I told him, that’s o.k., I just wanted to make amends for he other evening. He went back to her table. He came back once again. “She wants to meet you, and I pointed you out to her”. Oh good grief. I sheepishly followed him to her table. I introduced myself to her, she shook my hand and asked if I’d like to sit with her. I recounted the other evening, apologizing for our behavior and was sorry if we disturbed her. She didn’t recall us being too rude, and asked what I’d recommend from the menu. She in turn asked the waiter to bring me what I was drinking. She was so charming, friendly, saying she was enjoying our little town and it’s theater. She was funny, making me feel at ease, I thought after 20 minutes I should call it a night and thanked her for her kindness. I’ve met so many celebrities, but I can honestly say, she was the nicest.

Bonnie Gail Franklin is the reason why I love 1970's Sitcoms especially One Day At A Time and it brings me back so many memories of the show itself and I was thinking about her all the time and I never stopped at all and I think Pat Harrington jr. passed away right after her and both of them are deceased and not forgotten at all because I really miss them very much

I am a child of the 70s and grew up with my TV families. I adored ODAAT - they were so real and loving and I adored how strong Bonnie Franklin was - a feminist and they spoke what was going on. It’s just heartbreaking watching my childhood ‘family members’ pass away. 69 is young. I spent my holidays with these families. I remember one Christmas episode when mom and daughters spent Christmas Eve at Schneider’s lodge cabin … I imagined I was there too. ☮️

Joe Campanella was actually very good as Anne's ex hubby Ed. He was portrayed as kinda a jerk but not a real SOB -- he still loved his daughters. He and Anne still had feelings but couldn't live together.
I'm sure the writers were very tempted to make Ed a complete bastard but it was better to make him an old school guy who was tough to get along with.

This is bizarrely hilarious, in a sick way. You click on "Bonnie Franklin Dead ...." and immediately you get a bunch of cheery TV fake friends celebrating?!?

McKenzie and Valerie weren't "fake friends," and who are you to think you know how they felt about each other?

Why are you assuming fake friends? That cast was very close even years after show ended.

Pat Harrington's character was written to portray a kind of comedic tacky macho womanizer, and although the character was hilarious and lovable, I think that took away from the fact that he was an incredibly sexy, handsome, man. Even as an older man here in this interview, he's very good looking.

My brother and I used to watch it together and we would joke how me being older was more like Barbara and him younger was more like Julie lol

I don't get the comparison. Julie was the older sister.

If Bonnie Franklin only passed at 69 a few years ago, she could not have been much older than her daughters on the show.

Why do network news programs feel the need to have a gigantic fucking banner on screen, all the time, and block what they are actually trying to show? It take up about a 1/5 the real estate of the fucking screen.
