    This is awesome. As someone who’s trying to learn basic bookbinding, I’m blown away by how cheap this can be. As a hobbyist, I pay almost that much for the raw materials alone.

    Thanks for making this vid! I was introduced to the custom bind world recently and blew my mind. Big Image fan and have "the Maxx and Pitt" runs from start to finish in floppies. Always wished they would come out with them in hardcover but nope ....so custom bounds here I come 😃

    EXCELLENT tips! Patience is absolutely key! From collecting the material you want to include, to waiting for the binding process, I can confirm that this is probably the most important tip.
    Just an FYI for those based in the U.S. - if you provide your own graphic design, the base cost for a graphic hardcover through Houchen is just $25 (before any other bells and whistles like head/tail bands, bookmark ribbon, etc.). Of course, if you pay them to do the design work, it can add up quickly.

    It's way too expensive man. One custom bind can get me 2 tpbs instead. So have never bit the bullet. But love to see 'em on your shelf.

    I'm still relatively new to collecting but I'm a sucker for the teen titans and I plan to bind all of theyr series that were never collected. Your video hat been very helpful. After all its about having fun and making your collector wishes come true :)

    There's a local printing press near my house and they got all kinds of papers and a very good quality scanner, so i asked them to scan and reprint the comic book with same quality paper and print i want as hardcover with custom cover and dust jacket. (Its cost is almost same as buying new paper back and its really worth it.)

    • @khwaab201

      But since I have to provide them a physical copy before turning it into hardcover so I'm basically paying 2x for every comic

    I had a few custom binds done at Lehman a while back (Mr. Monster, Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children, a Vertigo anthology, a 'best of' Bill Sienkiewicz). I took my time assembling the material, I designed my own table of contents. And they turned out great. Except...I thought it would be great if the books had full colour art on the covers instead of buckram. Unfortunately, the lamination along the spines began to bubble almost immediately, especially on the thicker volumes. One day, I may look into getting them rebound, and print out dust jackets instead.

  • @pisceanpaul

    What about getting PDF copies of the comics you want bound? Is that a good approach? And if so, should you increase the margin of the pages that'll be bound to the spine? For example, I want to create my own Spider-Man omnibus that collects all my favourite issues from the 80s (e.g. Gang War, Death of Jean DeWolff, Blackcat dating Spider-Man, Kraven's Last Hunt, etc.). If I go the PDF route, would I need to print off the pages or would a place like Lindemann's do that for me?

    Thanks for the video. How many pages are your XO Manowar and Cave Carson binds? I am trying to decide on a volume 1 length between either a 548 pages (Court of Owls to and including Death of the Family) or a 972 page volume (Court of Owls to and including Zero Year: Dark City). I am trying to hit about 80% of your XO book in thickness, but bigger than your Cave Carson bind. The Synder Omi 1 doesn't appear to be a good reference for thickness as I suspect it is oversized pages (I may be wrong).

    Hi! So, you finally convinced me to enter this game, but I have a few questions, I would really appreciate your help. What would be the most efficient number of pages to have in a custom bind? For example, how many pages / issues has your Cave Carson? I’m wondering if it’s better to have 1 book with 720 pages or 2 with 360? It’s not about the money for me, it’s about the quality of reading (stays open, gutter loss, etc). Also, in terms of design, which software do you use to make the dust jackets and the tables of content?

    • @TheHardcoverComic
      @TheHardcoverComic  4 года назад +3

      Nuno Neto Welcome to the custom bind game! Cave Carson has 18 issues in it, and I would say 18-20 issues in a volume is ideal. The thinner the book the better the reading experience!
      I use photoshop for all my design work!
