Well now we know. Bill Murray was drunk and belligerent on set and tried to attack RIchard and threw a glass at him. Resulting in him needing bodyguards around Bill.
Richard Dreyfuss always plays the funniest ‘angry’ characters in movies, while Bill Murray is known for irking his fellow cast members on set. The ‘real’ tension between these two actors worked masterfully to make the hostility between the two characters believable in ‘What About Bob?’
Knowing someone in the industry that has worked with Murray on more than one occasion has also repeated that he is totally insufferable, whose work ethic left a lot to be desired so I can very well imagine him irritating Dreyfuss. The story this friend told me about Murray, at the end of it I wanted to punch Murrary if I ever saw him.
It’s why Aykroid and Harold Ramis could work with him. They did all the hard work, knew how important he was in filling certain roles , and were able to work with him in the right way
There's an interview with Richard Dreyfuss on RUclips where he explains that one night when they were making What About Bob? Murray got roaring drunk, screamed at Dreyfuss that everyone hates him and threw a heavy glass ashtray at Dreyfuss head but missed. Things were obviously tense after that.

Richard Dreyfuss is such a fantastic actor. For me, he's one of the greats. He should have more Oscars. He should have won for his work on 'Jaws'. But I suspect the Academy was too pompous to nominate an actor in a _blockbuster_ action film. Every actor was wonderful in that film - the woman whose son got killed too. The scene between her and Roy Scheider where she slapped him - even though it wasn't his fault, is etched in my memory. I felt so sorry for Roy's character. Bill Murray is a good actor too and so funny. But he doesn't have the best reputation either. Comedians are often nasty pieces of work in real life. You'd be surprised. I still enjoy his work anyway.
That is true they can be jerks. Richard did win best actor for the movie he did in between Jaws and Close Encounters called The Goodbye Girl. It lead to his only SNL appearence.
Well, with Jaws, a Supporting Actor nomination would have likely gone to Robert Shaw if one was given as Roy Scheider was the clear lead of the film and would have been up for Best Actor if nominated. Plus number of times, studios don’t want two performers to cancel each other out so they try not to have multiple actors or actresses nominated in the same category unless they’re sure one will defiantly win. Dreyfuss was great in Jaws, but of the main supporting characters, Quint was the obvious standout as Brody was the guy the audience could relate since he’s out of his depth with a Shark problem and doing what he can to learn as he goes to deal with this problem, we’re more in tune with his character than anyone else’s. Hooper is great and Dreyfuss was excellent, but Shaw would have been nominated for Supporting Actor over Dreyfuss, but the acting in Jaws got snubbed like Spielberg did for Best Director.
I was a uniformed NYC cop on duty at the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1980, when Bill Murray buttonholed me to be his involuntary dupe in a little skit he decided to "go public" with. He came across the street wearing an worn old high school varsity jacket, with what appeared to be a pint bottle of whiskey hanging out of his pocket. He was playing the part of a shallow Irish-American drunk for the crowd behind me on the sidewalk and using me as part of his little pantomime. Up until then I had been a Bill Murray fan, and admittedly, as the son of Irish immigrants, I had felt some pride in his success as a fellow Irish-American. I didn't appreciate his "drafting me" into his little skit, one in which I was supposed to "relate" with his dialogue, i.e., "Did Pat Moynihan come up yet", etc. It wasn't that he wasn't witty. He was actually pretty "cutting edge" in his caricature of a certain "type" of "shallow Irish drunkard", that IS out there. No, what burned me was that this "act" of his was what he decided to bring to the St. Patrick's Day Parade that day. It wasn't television, it was real life, and I was appalled that Bill Murray, as successful as he was at the time, was so needy of attention, and so insensitive to heritage of Irish people, that he chose to model a negative stereotype for the crowd that day. The crowd laughed. I didn't. My Irish father had only died the year before, and I resented being chosen out of the crowd of cops, for my Irish face, and the stereotype he sought to put upon me. I hope for his sake, he's grown up a bit since. It's one thing to play a "jerk", it's another thing to be one.

Back in the day my friend's dad had Richard Dreyfuss come into his office to order some custom invitations. Dreyfuss immediately requested that they swap positions so that Dreyfuss would be sitting behind the desk. My friend's dad agreed and they switched. But right away Dreyfuss leaned back and put his feet up on the desk! My friend's dad immediately told him to get his f*ing feet off of his desk. Dreyfuss complied and said "I just like to see how far I can push people".
I need Richard Dreyfuss to explain how he was teaching Biology classes at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts during the 90s....or maybe I had his doppleganger? Haha.
It's too bad. Alvin Sargent wrote the movie and I knew him. He just passed away peacefully. It's a shame after all these years they can't let things go.

With all the bad press about Murray and Dreyfuss having a "feud", I don't care about that. I love both of these actors, I truly do. In everything they have done. They are both very gifted and talented. They have both done great work, and left a wonderful legacy of film for everyone to enjoy for decades to come and beyond. If either, or both, become persnickity at times, or disagree, not a huge deal. Great talents will sometimes get bad press. But I have seen many clips of Bill interacting with just plain folk, as a regular person. It's a thing of his I guess. And Richard, everything he has ever touched in cinema is golden. I'm sure neither are perfect, no one is. But they have given their gifts to us, as talented people, for us to enjoy. That's enough.
They have to do a movie again together like a What About Bob part 2. It was so real and amazing. They movie cut out at the theater and they gave us rain checks. I couldn’t wait to get back and see the rest, I never laughed that hard in public in my life!
Murray came up through a very different path in his acting career and he never liked the "Hollywood" actors who took themselves a little too seriously. The tension between the 2 worked in the movie, because it brought out the real rage that Dreyfuss had for Murray. Regardless, it's a great movie and there was a different feel to Dreyfuss in this film that really made his character come alive - whether he realized it or not.
Okay now, I momentarily finished watching this video and it told me absolutely nothing about what was the problem between these two actors. I do know Richard Dreyfuss is an educated man & is a Constitutionalist of the 1st order, not a subject typically associated with Hollywood actors. I cannot categorically state Bill Murray falls into the typical class of the Hollywood left leaning liberal lowlifes that pervade this industry, however it shouldn't be dismissed as this video clearly gives no clue or indication on what the friction was about. Personally, Bill Murray gets under my skin, always has... LOL! :-)
Sounds basically like SNL guys couldn't stand anyone who was too uptight and full of themselves about their method acting gravitas. Now it's different - SNL'ers today fawn over anyone like they're fans... but in seasons 1,2,3 they were genuinely irreverent and gave no F's
If it weren't for how personal Groundhog Day is for me (was a family staple, we still watch it every christmas) What About Bob? would probably be my favorite Bill Murray movie. Interesting, I noted 2 movies where Bill clashed with his co-workers and created beefs. I'm glad he and Harold Ramis made up before he died at least. That made taking the news of his death easier.
That movie is the story of my life the last 14 years. My life being coopted. Love Dreyfus. He needs another love interest script like Goodbye girl. Cute.
In performing arts, it is an invariable fact:Tension creates works worth checking out- Murray knew what he was doing, and I’m sure Dreyfus knew as well.
I read the exact opposite of what’s in this video. Richard Dreyfus wanted Bill Murray to do anything on the set of What About Bob? to annoy him so that Dreyfus could stay in character. It worked, because there are many funny moments in What About Bob? where Bob Wiley manages to charm everyone, including Dr. Marvin’s family and the locals, while driving Dr. Marvin insane. Perhaps it goes to show that psychiatrists really aren’t very caring and in truth are antisocial.
I don't like Richard Dreyfuss after I saw a interview he did after finishing the Jaws movie. He was young and said it was the worst film he has ever been in and slagged off the producer and some actors. Move forward after Jaws was a smash hit and Richard Dreyfuss was in another interview and said completely the opposite. What a hypocrite. That was the moment he became not worthy of my attention.
More than anyone else, Richard Dreyfuss makes me feel old. I see him so young and "Jaws" - and I see him now. It sounds like Murray was a genius, that that helped make the tension between Bob and his therapist work. I wouldn't be surprised if there is no animosity at all.
Dreyfuss starred in the best movie ever made. He also won the Oscar, in a different movie, for playing the role I would have killed to have played. Bill Murray... is God.
On the set of _Jaws_ , the guy who played Quint, Robert Shaw, had a real problem with Dreyfuss too. He did it off set, because it made magic on set when they filmed. Method acting. Maybe Dreyfuss does his best work when he is around another superstar that hates him, whatever it is, I am honored to be in the time of Dreyfuss, Shaw, and Murray.
I have never seen a funnier movie in 67 years of Comedy movie watching these two together were just perfect my two boys were brought up on the dialogue for this movie. Two geniuses at work on a perfect movie script.

I loved “ What aAbout Bob”… it worked … the animosity helped 👍
This may have been created to bring The Movie to peoples attention. Kind of a planned publicity stunt.
Probably
Okay now, I momentarily finished watching this video and it told me absolutely nothing about what was the problem between these two actors.
I do know Richard Dreyfuss is an educated man & is a Constitutionalist of the 1st order, not a subject typically associated with Hollywood actors. I cannot categorically state Bill Murray falls into the typical class of the Hollywood left leaning liberal lowlifes that pervade this industry, however it shouldn't be dismissed as this video clearly gives no clue or indication on what the friction was about.
Personally, Bill Murray gets under my skin, always has... LOL! :-)
I don't care about a 'beef'. " 'What about Bob' is my all time favourite movies. It's fantastic.
"What About Bob?" is a classic. Filmed around Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, Va. I was living in Franklin County at the time.
Sounds basically like SNL guys couldn't stand anyone who was too uptight and full of themselves about their method acting gravitas. Now it's different - SNL'ers today fawn over anyone like they're fans... but in seasons 1,2,3 they were genuinely irreverent and gave no F's
“Doctor Maaarviiiin!!”
Richard Dreyfuss knows civics.
For those who don’t know what civics is it’s how our democracy functions.
Cute.
It’s sarcasm ,they are playing a game. Cmon they are not upset with each other.
Murray threw an ash tray at Dreyfus on the set of that film.
They should have made up some movie with Richard Dreyfuss, Steve Martin, Bill Murray and John Candy staying in the same motel room LOL🤣😀😛🤣😄😅😆😆😛😅
The Doctor: "I want some peace and quiet##!#$##!@#!!"
Simon and Bob: "I'll be quiet"...."I'll be peace".....lol....lol...
This is titled "The Real Reason" and then you finally conclude "he didn't get into details." Hmm.
Well, "What About Dr. Leo Marvin???" There's a sequel we'd all love to see.
The ONLY film I can stand Dreyfuss in is What About Bob. He was a perfect fit. Beyond that, really don't like his whiney squeaky smug attitude
Vern Etzel
uhhh, jaws?
meh
Vern Etzel And what about that stinker Mr Holkands Opus? Yikes
I thought he was good in Close Encounters... He went full range- clueless, nervous, conviction, fragility, nuts. I still love that movie.
Moonlit and I thought he was totally unconvincing.
Dreyfuss is short tempered, and Murray knew it!!! So he wanted to have fun!!! Really PISSED Dreyfuss off!!!
So...we still don’t know.
“How to speak endlessly but not say a thing.”
One thing I wonder is if Dreyfuss and Danny DeVito got along when making 1987's Tin Men. I like that one!
LOVED THIS. what a treat.
No wonder the movie is a classic!!!❤❤❤
In performing arts, it is an invariable fact:Tension creates works worth checking out- Murray knew what he was doing, and I’m sure Dreyfus knew as well.
yeah remember Capt Quint ! - aka Robert Shaw , Who allegedly Terrorised Dreyfuss more than the Shark did on Jaws! :-p
@3.02 was that Stallone handing Dreyfus an award. Stallone is 5’6” so Dreyfus must be a dwarf.
"Looks back fondly on the torment of his co star" lol
The most annoying thing about WOB was the Wife supporting Bob so much....yup an annoying movie
More than anyone else, Richard Dreyfuss makes me feel old. I see him so young and "Jaws" - and I see him now.
It sounds like Murray was a genius, that that helped make the tension between Bob and his therapist work. I wouldn't be surprised if there is no animosity at all.
With Dreyfuss being accused of sexual harrassment last year, gotta side with my boy Bob, I mean Bill...lol...
What about Bill Murray being accused of sexual harassment later this year?
So a mere accusation is enough to turn you off from Dreyfuss ?
Ed Reid yeah and just being accused in today's liberal feminists world means hes guilty right snowflake?
regressive thoughts exactly, #metoo supports this. - accusations mean guilt. Its a joke
Here come the f**king justice warriors, only their opinion counts, lefties hate men who flirt but love and support child predators
Ayyy! I didn't know Fozzie directed What About Bob?!
I promise you, these guys love each other
Why is it so acceptable to call the Irish drunk?
The funny thing is is that there a lot more alcoholic Americans than Irishman so maybe it’s them that’s always drunk 🤔
because it's a known fact. j/k, good question.
Genasiker: It's ok to say those, too.
Oh yeah and who the fuck told you that?
It's not acceptable, yanks drink far more than the whole world
Dreyfuss starred in the best movie ever made. He also won the Oscar, in a different movie, for playing the role I would have killed to have played. Bill Murray... is God.
Tim Wright Ahem he was NOT in Titanic dummy
Chris L yes but not because of Dick. He was irrelevant to the plot
Chris L Overshadowed doesnt cover it.
He's a God, not the God. I don't think.
Tim Wright Give it a rest.
I really like both of them. Bill Murray is such a funny guy. Richard Dreyfuss seems like me might take things a little too seriously though.
Murray tried to get under his skin & it worked. Really well.
I'm on Bill's side, there prob was a really good reason he threw that ash trey, ofcoarse u did nothin, its Bill freaking Murray, Iove that guy!😊
Two very talented people. Too bad they can't appreciate each other and bury the hatchet.
I have never seen a funnier movie in 67 years of Comedy movie watching these two together were just perfect my two boys were brought up on the dialogue for this movie. Two geniuses at work on a perfect movie script.
Whatever the reason was behind the animosity between those two actors, it definitely benefited the movie.
