I always enjoy Kenya Airways and I hope they are finally making a profit. They have a good product for the African market and I hope they and Ethiopian will stay as mainstay airlines of the African continent. We are rooting for you KQ!!!!
You can't get bored on a 15-hour flight with that sense of humor 😂😂 Many thanks for flying KQ.
🙌🙌
Kenya airways is indeed the pride of Africa.👏
I find priority bag tags usually make my bags come out last. I'm convinced they end up loading them first, meaning they get offloaded last.
They’re supposed to be in a separate area under the plane, right inside the door, but I guess that doesn’t always happen
Great trip report, Patrick.
Kenyans are a wonderful people.
Agreed! They’re amazing!
Have flown this route 4 times myself since KQ started these flights in October, 2018. Your video brought back memories of boarding at Nairobi for JFK and the gate 19.
Awesome!
Love your content!
You’re getting to be my favorite travel blogger.
I really appreciate it man 👊
Great video as always. To answer your question Terminal 1A was built and completed in 2014 whilst 1B-D have been there for decades. And yes they were renovated in 2017, before they were very different and honestly unpleasant to be in due to no AC. But KQ has worked hard to improve its hub which is good to see.
Great to know! Thanks!
I’ve been on Kenya Airways twice from London to Nairobi. The staff is super nice and I didn’t have complaints about anything, although it’s not exceptional. Great review and local pronunciation of Lagos.
I love all the different airlines and flights you share. So cool.
Thanks! I love the adventure and sharing it with all y’all too
I love Kenya Airways flight from New York to Nairobi. The cabin crew is one of the best in the world and food is excellent. Equally, flights from Europe to Nairobi are superb. Asante sana. Hakuna matata!!
Awesome! I agree. I would totally take this flight again
Definitely one of the non-biased review I've ever watched. Great work.
Thanks!
You've gain a subscriber. I love how you showed most part of the airport. Love that.
Thanks man!
Sunday morning just got better with another trip report from Pat! Thanks for the international travel tips, I had no idea that a connection would be the secret to saving on a long haul international flight 😅
Thanks man! And yea… the connections are great if they work out. I just had to get myself home from Toronto instead of from NY
I actually was on Kenya airways flight on the 21st of October and it was ok, not spectacular, but to be honest I was satisfied with that. I fly Kenya airways atleast twice a year from JFK and I will say that service is about a 7 from rating of one to ten. I wouldn’t say that the Flight attendants were friendly, but polite. Kenyans love Kenya Airways and they have something to be proud of, it’s a popular flight though and even though it’s not a ten I like it and will fly them. Thanks for the video, it’s probably the most I seen on Kenya airways to JFK.
Totally! Great points! I do really like Kenya Airways, but I do agree it’s not a 10/10. They’ve got a good thing going however, and the JFK flights are a great service
Try South African Airways next time. You'll be happy with everything.
@@sunelelujabe8075 South African Airways don’t fly to the states anymore. Service has stopped since Covid.
@@soulrebel2006 True, but soon they are going to reintroduce the American flights. They just reintroduced Cape Town and Johannesburg to Sao Paulo flights.
@@sunelelujabe8075 I believe it when I see it 😂
Great trip report KQ is indeed a good airline. Had a wonderful experience flying two times on board KQ many years ago. Watching your trip report brought back memories. I have enjoyed every bit of it. Wishing KQ success in their future endeavors. Thank you.
Awesome! Great to hear! Safe Travels!
Great review as always Patrick!
Thanks!
Great review as always Patrick. I had the dreaded Secondary Security Screening Selection (SSSS) on my boarding pass for SQ24 from SIN to JFK last Thursday. Thankfully I encountered no extra security nor questions departing Singapore. Not sure if that's because it was business class or perhaps because of the gate security at Changi Airport. Regardless I was happy I wasn't delayed and ended up being first to board. Keep up the great work!
That’s awesome! I’ve always had to actually go through the extra steps, but it wasn’t too bad at least. Thanks!
Great review. You just earned a new subscriber.
Thanks man!
Thanks for the info + video!!!
Thanks!
Nice flight review. The load factor being eighty six percent and up, Kenya Airways will do great on the New York route.
Agreed! Even though they initially said it would probably lose them money
Thanks for this video. Super helpful!
Thanks!
Wonderful,,,I''ve just marvelled at this!!!🤩😊
Awesome!
I got the SSSS so on three trips around 2014-2015, all of them when I was a minor travelling as a dependent of an American diplomat (using a diplomatic passport). No one else in my family ever got it while we travelled together. I haven’t gotten it since and I’ve taken quite a few trips that would meet a lot of the speculated selection criteria (frequent travel to unusual or high-risk countries, one-way tickets, last minute bookings, etc.).
Also, around the same time period I frequently got pre-check on my tickets despite not being enrolled in pre-check. I guess the us government couldn’t decide if I was a threat or not 😂
Haha 🤣🤣 the most non-threatening, threatening person this world has ever seen
Another great video Patrick. You are correct about those special bg tags. Is more for show than anything else! Wheb everyone is special no one is special. 🤷🏻♂️
Totally agree. Honestly if they just didn’t put anything I don’t think I would really care all that much 🤷♂️
God bless.
Thanks for the video Patrick
Thanks dawg
I Have Experience Kenya Airways Business Class On The B777-300er Some Years Ago,And 6 Weeks Ago On B787-8.Great Trip Report
Incredible! Thanks!
I flew American First class from SFO to Jacksonville last week with 6 checked-in bags. At the front of the luggage parade was my sister’s bag. The other 5 came out at random times throughout the process. All with the bright orange “priority” tags on them. I also caught that “trans-pacific” announcement in the beginning. Perhaps your mind is already thinking about United’s inaugural flight from SFO to Manila in a couple of weeks. 😊
Oops you caught me…. Oceans are tough man 🤣
The dreaded SSSS is indeed attributed only to US carriers . It depends on your journey/itinerary.
Great video. I will be going through Nbo in a couple of weeks. Coming in on Air France and catching a KQ flight to Ebb.
Awesome! Enjoy!
“Longest trans-Pacific route”? From Kenya to NY? They must only be allowed to carry three passengers if they’re taking THAT route! 😂😂
That’s trans Atlantic
@@tufflife5556 Patrick said trans-Pacific. I caught it, too.
Ha 🤣 there’s always something small I miss in my editing process… good catch
Great review, except for the "to much information" re: the TV offerings. 😮
Regarding priority bags, they are generally put in their own container, which is loaded last so should be first off the plane. I find 90% of the time, especially internationally, my priority bags arrive within the first few minutes of bags on the belt. Domestically, though, it can be hit or miss.
Interesting. I used to feel that way but it feels like it has been getting worse
And improve all his meals, good luck. Thank you for this beautiful clip
Hi,
I about the priority tag on the bags, you are completely right that these bags should come first!
They should, but seems like they do less and less these days. I wish they would just not put them on at all so there isn’t even any expectations
Looks good thanks for the video
Been enjoying your reports more and more lately, this one is no exception. Good insight into a carrier I will probably not fly just due to the nature of my overseas travels, interesting nonetheless. From the looks of it, both NBO and ADD are the more modern airports of eastern Africa.
Also, 15-20 minutes of taxiing at JFK is a good day, just saying ;). Nice review!
Thanks! NBO is my favorite East Africa airport. I do like ADD but I feel it can get a bit overcrowded at certain times of day.
Another great vlog and interesting flight. Some airports in the USA Miami and Dallas participate in ITI International to International so if you are just transiting the US to another country you dont have to reclaim your bag but you do need to go through immigration and back through security again. I use it all the time if travelling from London to Miami to Cancun or vv but Ive not connected to a US domestic flight after arriving in the US for years.
Strange. At the airports I’ve been to at least they always say to collect and recheck your bag regardless of your final destination. Maybe I’m just unlucky though
Nice review. The flight started as a daily service then 5x week,-then 4x and now back to daily.
flying business from Columbus, OH.....thru JFK....and on to Kenya.....and then to Tanzania. This video answers all of my questions and then some! As a business passenger, I get to go to the pride lounge for my long lay-over before Tanzania! I never would have known this. Thank you for the super information. and I changed my seat selection so I do not have to "climb over" a poor stranger at night for the restroom.
Loved ur video... Kenya airways seems nice.. Soon will try them... 😁
Good luck with that man! You’ll enjoy it!
@@PatrickSheaAviation thank you dear...wish u safe journey always everywhere... 😀
My experience with Kenya Airways has always been superb! Wishing the airline the best
Awesome! I’ve loved all my flights with them in economy and business class!
For South America Africa routes Angola Airlines (TAAG) flies to Brazil and South African Airways will resume their Sao Paulo route on the 31st of October directly from Cape Town and in November from Johannesburg. So currently TAAG, SAA and Ethiopian connect Africa to South America.
I can't wait wait to fly South African Airways on that Sao Paoulo route again.
13:24 to 13:38 is a cool segment, makes you feel as if someone else was filming from across, synced well with narration.. those socks 👌 + handy booking tip (after realizing what you were actually saying lol) "didn't really know what to do with the red throw, so it became a purdy lil accent on my bed" rofl too bad about the bumpy night and the ventless cabin (ouch) that coffee action made me feel how bumpy that was yikes.. priority bagging should def come out first esp from a long flight, it would tick me off, too
Surprised there is no Wi-Fi on this long flight. This episode has been extremely helpful for frequent fliers on this route! Cheers!
Thanks! I too would love to see wifi in the future
This is the most recent and comprehensive KQ review i have watched for a while. Most of the times, videos last say 20 min but they spend 15 min packing home and biding farewell at airport 😂 then 4 min for take off (in landscape mode 😢) and the remaining 1min for the rest 😂😂😂. Many thanks for sharing
While not familiar with the jfk route ( but more on the Cdg/ams to/from east africa services), your video features new nice airport facilities, new show cooking in lounge, new mattress pad on board. Hope KQ is on the right track and will keep (yes *keep* - after decades of losses) posting profits...
As a Rwandan i wish all African airlines to be succesful in the future. Be KQ, ET, Uganda Airlines, Air Tanzania and RwandAir.
Asante sana.
Thanks man!! I really do enjoy the African aviation market. There is so much more to explore. I’m trying to get out to Tanzania/Uganda/Rwanda sometime soon to try those flag carriers 🤞🤞
Great report!
Thanks!
Very welcome!@@PatrickSheaAviation
Can one book from any state in the US and then get connected from that state to JFK by delta then fly the direct flight to Nairobi from there? If so, where can I do that?
You should Fly Ethiopian airways JFK TO ABJ. One of two Ethiopian routes to fly into NYC area. Only one into JFK. Data says this route relies heavily on the point to point market between New York and Abidjan. Try to get on the newer 787-9. It’s random between 787-8 and 787-9 on this route.
I am very intrigued by a lot of Ethiopian’s 5th freedom routes. Air Coté d’Ivoire has plans to launch ABJ to JFK on their A339s once those arrive. I’m definitely holding out for that!
Thank you for another great review. I love it when people show another side of my continent cuz I’ve been asked if we even have airports 😂
Lol… I spent some time in some more interesting places on this trip to Africa, so Kenya especially felt insanely modern!
Hi Patrick, one very minor issue - the flight you did was trans-ATLANTIC, not trans-pacific as you stated in the audio of the video, unless that's how they arrived at the flight time of 131 hours lol. It would have been a truly transoceanic flight if you had done that flight - over both the Indian and Pacific oceans. Definitely an interesting video - Kenya Airways has always been interesting to me - one of the first operators of new generation widebodies in Africa and developing a competitive product in the process.
Yea….. caught that one a bit too late 🤣
My experiences with priority bag tags are inconsistent at best. But my main priority is sufficient connection time at international airports. For the record, I prefer non-stop international travel because variables involved with one-stop connections wear on me, but sometimes one-stop connections are unavoidable. Where SSSS is concerned, let's just say that I don't want to jinx myself.
Nonstop is always great, I’ve been screwed by short connections a bunch recently… but sometimes there isn’t really another option unfortunately. Good luck on not getting the ssss!!
Nice video and narration
Thanks!
And improving all aspects of his dealings to the benefit of everyone who wants to move up.
Nice video.
About the skiplagging method to get a cheaper ticket, I understand that airlines frown upon it, in fact in US domestic sector it is considered a breach of the flight terms and can lead to an airline ban.
Yea, you should never skiplag. You'll get in trouble with airlines and potentially banned. Never book a ticket unless you plan to fly every segment
I hope Air Algérie learns from Kenya Airways before Ethiopian, to renew their business/economy cabins or to better use their aircrafts to add routes like these
I guess we will see what they do when their new fleet arrived
Government VIP lounge is mainly a waiting area for Kenyan State Officials like Governors and Members of Parliament
Cool. Thats different
Yeah so that we don’t see them eating our taxes 😂
Excellent videos"
Thanks!
Thank you for flying Kenya Airways
Thank you! It was a wonderful time!
Great reporting as usual. Who was your travelling with? I'm just being nosey. You said that the table ''Was able to hold both of our phones''. 16:09 I don't understand why you haven't got more subscribers though, because your trip reports are fantastic.
I was more just referring to my seatmate. My friend flew home from Africa a few days before but I stayed to get some content. Thanks man!
I am skyteam elite plus with China airlines. On long haul, they load all priority bags in a seperate container which comes off first. They then offload that container onto the carousel. Within Asia flights things are a bit different, though the only airport I have found priority bags mean the exact opposite is BKK
I have found that Asia does a much better job than the rest of the world with the priority bags
Excellent Channel 👍
Thanks!
I cannot wait to fly that route in may 😍
You’ll love it! Safe travels
The SSSS is an acronym for Secondary Security Screening Selection.
Flying this December on Kenia.
Safe travels!
our very own 🔥🔥🙌🙌
SSSS is indeed an acronym. Selected Special Security Screening.
Great video. Priority tag ensures your bags don't get offloaded if the plane needs to shed some weight😂
lol fair enough 🤣🤣
I just got a chuckle! Yep, connecting from Columbus, OHIO to Kenya and then on to JRO to hike Kilimanjaro! Let's go COLUMBUS!
Ha! Awesome! Safe travels!
Kenyans love piling on Kenya Airways as not the best of airlines or offering the best of service. However, it's always interesting to see that foreigners love Kenya Airways.
Kenyans are very self-critical.They would shudder if they tried some other carriers on the continent. Straight up air matatus.
Thank you Patrick, good video to show people all around the world that Africa is not a village where all the people live in huts. I'm African living in Canada and there are lots of people here who still think that way!
I love Africa, although there are plenty of places I’ve felt unsafe, there are plenty of amazing places with wonderful people!
I flew kenya pre pandemic. (2020)
24:00 Same happened to me..
Music highlights too.
Games was not working.
Shopping was not working.
Rate the service was not working.
My flight tab was not working too except for the common maps.
Basically "The pride of Africa" has the same problems 5 years ago.
2020
1. Flight was delayed 2 hours to BKK
2. Our connecting flight in Kenya was delayed.
3. Then canceled. 4. They gave us a hotel for 6 hours.
4.1 Took 20 mins to get to the van.
4.2 Traveling to the hotel took 30 mins
4.3 Booked in 15 mins
4.4 Went to the restaurant and waited nearly 1.5 hours for a meal.
4.5 Slept 3 hours, back to airport, waited 7 hours before boarding.
5. Borded waited 2 hours, got off, waited 3 hours, and finally of we go.
I have had the dreaded SSSS once in Berlin and once in Munich. Not anywhere else yet haha I feel like it is not random at all. Edit both times I got the SSSS I had car parts as my carryons 😂
Lol I’m sure that didn’t raise any suspicions 🤣🤣
very nice video
how did you film that all without security intercept?
Quickest camera in the west😮💨😛 ha! But really I just have gotten more comfortable knowing where you can and can't film, as well as which airports are less comfortable with cameras
Yep SSSS is only for US bound flights.
You did everything possible to convince travellers knowing full well that a fat cheque was waiting for you at the end of this advert.
Can’t a dude enjoy a flight without it being an ad 🤷♂️ grow up dog
I prefer to avoid bulkhead seats because the TV has to be folded into the seat and you can’t use it for takeoff/landing.
Agreed. But it was the only window seat left when I booked
How does one book an international flight as a connector? Do I insert departure and destination cities as outside the places I am going? Please enlighten
Well it doesn’t work for everyone. For me, on this trip, I just wanted to make sure that the NBO to JFK flight was included but didn’t care as much where I started or ended so I plugged in a ton of random city pairs and found this to save me a couple thousand than just booking that one segment. Just make sure you plan to actually use each leg of your booking or you can get into trouble with the airlines
Thanks for flying the Pride of Africa, we'll get there someday....
Better save time than money
Great review. I am a little confused on the statement about buying the ticket. Did you actually start your trip in the DRC? Did you fly the final leg to Toronto? I suspect the SSSS could be due to your flight technically originating in the DRC. I got this once on a flight from XMN-LAX, but the check did not take long. Thanks.
SSSS is only applicable to the flights from and to the U.S. as it’s a part of DHS messaging and passenger ranking
I did fly from DRC to Toronto. I didn’t care as much about where the journey ended as long as it included this specific flight somewhere in the process
@@eugenes5788 True, but given the full itinerary started in the DRC this would potentially flag the passenger for more security on the US bound leg from NBO-JFK.
We have a big West African population here in CMH. Lots of Somalis, Ethiopians, and some Kenyans.
one question: as a business traveler, I get 2 checked bags. Is it possible to take my roll-bag and a backpack as my carry-ons? I will take these to the airport here to test for size, but as "business" do we get a little wiggle room? I am hiking Kilimanjaro and the thought of losing my luggage on 2 transfers is making me panic a bit.
Yea no that makes sense. I had no problem bringing a roller bag and back pack on board with me
your bags were 55 minutes late. because your ticket did have the SSSS extra security checks.
I don’t think that was the problem as there was many other priority bags that came out at the same time, mixed in with other bags but who knows 🤷♂️
SSSS is part of US government security process, so you will only get it flying to or from US, other countries don’t have that
Good to know
Columbus Ohio has a large east African population, specifically Somali. So it makes sense that they would use Kenya airways together back and forth between their homeland.
Interesting. I saw the stats, it was just not what I expected
I have been in this lounge
You would think that the 787-8 being a Boeing manufacturer that the 787-8 would be fully equipped with the latest updated equipment!
Yea, although they are relatively old so they have similar equipment to other aircraft of that time at least
Wow... How would you rate the landing?
Elite status with AA and fly exclusively domestic first or their Flagship Biz. Priority bag check is very inconsistent. At some stations bag out first round. Sometimes not. Fly to HNL often. AA Priority bags there often come out dead last. I think perhaps HNL handlers do it on purpose. Who knows?
Yea… to be fair, packing the cargo gold is tough. Especially on full flights. So if a bag fits, it kinda has to go there
Shane would you try my country airline TAAG Angola airlines ???
Good video. You're lucky, whenever I've flown KQ in business, no seat covers. I have to agree the overly hot cabins is not pleasant, and is done to ensure you don't disturb the crew. I've complained on numerous occasions and got the crew to reduce the temperature.
If I remember correctly, the seat covers are only on select routes. I flew the 787 to Dubai earlier this year and I don’t remember seeing them
@@PatrickSheaAviation I did the Dubai route this spring but have also done Amsterdam and London and can confirm there’s nothing so it must be for the JFK service only.
@@gregepps4710 I guess it is a significantly longer flight 🤷♂️
you said the only connection from africa to oceania is ethiopian??
where do you mean?
Qantas and South African fly to Australia (SYD and PER)
Hello,
Are lounge services (food, etc.) at Kenya Airport free?
If you’re in business class you can access the lounges for free. If in economy, it’ll cost a bit of money
What if i want to travel to the US and book as transinting ? Will authoities allow me to make entry?
Well in the US, I believe you need the proper entry paperwork even if you are transiting, but I don’t recommend booking a connecting ticket if you don’t plan to fly the last segment
The flights take 13 hours not 14 hours
They add one hour on flight just in case if flights delays or other stuff
KQ is a great airline, but I wonder whether this particular aircraft is profitable on this route.
Sounds like they have been getting the required loads. I’m not sure on the financials of it, but the fact they’re expanding it must mean good things for it
👼🏼 I also found your “punching a baby in the face” reference as one of the funniest comments ever in an airline’s review! Just curious if said punching made the bebe cry louder or actually calmed things down overall?
🤣🤣 fell asleep eventually
SSSS stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection.😮😮 It simply means you will be pulled in for additional questioning. You can't ask why or they can't tell the reason because it's all about security and visa compliance. Its random and in my case it happened twice when I was traveling alone on a US inbound flight. Just answer them and it should be good as long as you didn't hide anything to say them.
What agent/website did you use to get those prices?
I use all kinds of different sites. I believe this one was through FlightHub. Even still though, I’ll spend hours just plugging in different cities for the beginning and end of the journey to find the best possible price, even if it’s a connecting journey
