- Tied by Gretchen Beatty in the Federation of Fly Fishers "Fly Pattern Encyclopedia," the Poly Royal is a general attractor dry fly that can be tied as big as a #8, and in theory, as small as a #22. (Just not by me.)
Hook: #8-22 dry fly

Overbody: Foam
Post: White poly yarn, or any synthetic
Hackle: Brown

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. Thanks for stopping by.
Can't believe that farm life has totally taken me away from watching your wonderful tieing videos. Watched two in a row. Very, very happy. 😁
Well thank you Jon! But I know what you mean. Real life can certainly get in the way for me goofing off on RUclips! 🤣
A good one. Simple and very practical. I'd use that rather than a Humpy!
When you said the body was a bit lumpy I laughed at the name that went through my mind - Matt's Lumpy Humpy 🤣
It's a real good pattern.and al and Gretchen are 2 great people.thanks for sharing Matt!
I like a Royal for an attractor pattern and this would simplify the the tie and float well. Thanks Matt.
I think you're right Mel! Definitely an attractor pattern. :-)
Yeah, right, #22 anything is beyond me too... let alone a Humpy variant. I like the looks of the deer/elk/moose/et al hair originals. Fun to tie but hard to get the proportions right on the "hump" with the tips for the wings, at least for me. The few I've tied floated on their side. One day in the Adirondacks I did some on the water alterations and cut the wings off, then the hackle top and bottom. I got some looks from the trout then a few takes. Sorta looked like a humpy "spinner".
Good choice for your tutorial Matt. The Beattys always have great "EZE" variations and tips in Fly Tyer. Thanks Matt, another winner of a video! 👍
Matt, thanks for all the history and the great fishing videos.
Nice fly Matt. With these old eyes I'm thinking maybe an orange or yellow yarn so I can see it in rough water. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
Appreciate it Dave! And I know what you mean. I was trying to fish a #19 Griffith's Gnat the other day and I couldn't see that thing more than about 15 feet out. :-)
Lumpy Humpy has a good ring to it...I know I have a few of those in my box. 😎 Nice tie Matt.
Morning Matt. I like the fly. My father-in-law wants a variety of dry flies. You have just helped me out . Thanks for the share and have a great week.
You too Nich! Have fun with it my friend. :-)
Two of my favorite materials, poly yarn and foam. That should float like a cork. I've got a bunch of similar flies I've tied with different color bodies, including biots, peacock herl and pheasant tail. I tie the "post" in horizontally on the hook so it ends up working as wings too. Great work, as usual. :)
This is a killer pattern with a black under body with a red hot spot.
Thanks Matt another nice one, have a blessed day my friend.
Love humpies. Nice looking fly. Thx Matt!
Another winner! I really like the foam / floss combination. I’m definitely going to try this out.
Nicely tied, Matt. This fly would work quite well on the Penobscot or any river.
Good evening Matt. Was on the road today returning from visiting family in Calgary. Nice pattern. My tying list is getting long but there isn’t many dry flies on it. Headed north for some fishing at the end of July. I’m looking forward to it. Take care Matt.
Really Cool .Matt. can't wait to tie and try this one. Thanks.
Cool looking fly, Matt
This is one of my favorite indicators and caught fish on it
Thanks for the video, Matt
I'm going to try this one.
Looks like a nice lazy summer pattern.
Good Morning Sir Matt, great tie and great fly. It looks like a lot of fun to ty. Thank you for sharing this.
You bet Edward! Always appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
Nice work Matt. Thanks
Fantastic work
Thank you! Cheers!
Cool Pattern, yep, I can use that one. I may try a size 20, I don't think I have any 22 hooks. Thanks for Sharing Matt.
Nice , thank you Matt.
Nice looking attractor pattern. Thanks Sir Matt
You bet! Appreciate it Marshall! 👍
gonna try this one for brook trout this year. Thanks!
Nice tie Matt. Making it look so easy!
It is! And thanks for the note. 👍
Very Cool!!🐟🐟🐟
Nice and easy...
Nicely done!
Nice bug my friend. Looks really good and not very difficult. Just the way I like it.
Same here! Quick ties with cheap materials, and I don't mind when they end up in trees. :-)
Great work Matt. Thanks.
Appreciate it Ken!
Nice job Matt, I really like it it should go to fly
Tks matt good looking searching pattern 😊
Appreciate it Burt!
I like it!
Another good one.
I always found a ginger/yellow version in 16 to be an excellent searching pattern when sallies were present.
Thanks Matt!
Great call Paul! This thing with a yellow body, and lighter brown or ginger hackle and it would certainly make a passable yellow sally!
Looks like a good floater for sure. I think this fly would be a great candidate to pair with a small dropper. Thanks for sharing and for your dedication to fly tying/fishing! Warmest regards Matt
Neat
How's the soft hackle fishing been going Matt?
Cool tie Matt! Thanks for sharing. 😀
