@@stephanie7638 When I heard one of the actresses from Broadchurch was going to be Dr. Who - I was over the moon thinking it was Olivia Colman. Very disappointed it was Jodie - not enough gravitas to balance with the goofy. I think OC could have quelled many of the nay sayers. And the show runner offered it to OC first, who turned it down.

Not me, I started watching for two other reasons: firstly, because the setting of Broadchurch was largely that of West Bay in Dorset, just down the road from where I originate and it was fantastic to see such a stunning location be brought to national attention; and the second was for Olivia Colman. Having seen her in various comedic roles mentioned here and then her incredible performance in 'Tyrannosaur', I had to see what she brought to 'Broadchurch' and was blown away by her. She's so, so good!

I will never forget watching Tyrannosaur for the first time.
I remember watching the trailer before going to the movie theater, and just her facial expressions in it made me want to cry on the spot (I was like “what the hell??”; I never cry watching trailers). I vaguely recognized Olivia’s face, having seen her previously only in that one episode of Skin which I had rewatched a lot and in which she played the quirky hippie mother of one of the teenage characters…
I remember the little movie theater, the color of the seats, where we were seated, how many people were in the room with my gf and I (only three, on the other side of the aisle). I remember the silence after the end credits, nobody dared to speak, we all left the theater walking very slowly, we were all in shock.
The movie was so hard and impactful, dark and beautiful too.
But mostly, Oliva Coleman’s performance floored me, it shook me to my core. It was breathtaking.
It’s the way she portrayed Hannah’s fear that got me the most; her eyes, her body language. Just heart wrenching.
I could not believe this unknown actress who had only played quirky, awkward supporting characters was turning before my eyes into this huge HUGE dramatic actress.
To me, still one of the best performances committed to film. I’ll never get over it.
It doesn’t matter that she did not get an academy award for it. Paddy Constantine (the director) said there was just no money to launch an award campaign. However, people who watched her on the screen were not blind. This movie changed Olivia Coleman’s life and gave her the career she has today!

@@dwalker1974 Yup, and I remember thinking of Eddie in Vera Drake, and how completely different he is in this. Such an evil, sadistic man, who gets what he deserves. Everyone has a limit as to what they can and will take and although Hannah took WAY more than maybe she should have, eventually, she drew a line, he stepped over it, and,....Well, you know the rest. Again, this was the first time I saw her and they were talking Oscar then. " Her acting surrounding these two lines is flawless. As an avid cinephile, I've often wondered what it must feel like to be there, in the moment, as the director and camerman are capturing it. Must be quite the mystical experience.

Like everyone I was so happy to see her get the Oscar not only for that performance but just knowing that after that people around the world could finally be introduced to her work as she deserve and the fans deserve, she is so complete, but unless people had been following British tele they wouldn’t seen a lot of her works. A lot of actresses from her generation have enjoyed a list status, but without having 1 tenth of the parts she’s managed to play, even if her parts were 5 minutes on screen it was so incredibly well done, she disappears into these roles so well , and then you’d feel inclined to research her on RUclips to get to know the person who is able to manage that so well, only to find out how lovely she is, and down to earth, how can someone work on that industry, be that good, and be so completely humble about it, it’s so flattering I think for all her peers because you can see on her interviews that the fact that she seems to be unaware of her greatness because she genuinely is paying attention and enjoying their work.

The scene on Broadchurch when she abused her husband was the highlight of her acting skills in my opinion. When I have watched it, I felt her pain and it was so enormously realistic and well acted. Both me and my husband were crying watching it. She is truly great actress.

That scene, yes, also in the courthouse when Ellie finally tells her son how it's going to be from here on out, telling him what's what and who's who. Meaning, Ellie (Mom) is the boss! Can watch those two scenes over and over, they are "OUTSTANDING, MILLER" (quoting Alec Hardy)!!!

I was just thinking maybe I'm strong enough to watch "Broadchurch" again. Seeing just these few scenes has absolutely broken my heart again. And now I know I must watch it again soon.

The Favorite is good no doubt...but for me the best Colman performance will be Tyrannosaur forever. In a perfect world, she would have won the Oscar for that role.

Yes, I agree especially with "Broadchurch". Olivia was super brilliant in that show as Ellie Miller.

the Mum in the series "Beautiful People". a standout performance for me..the ep when she shares a memory with her son about her best friend passing when they were living it up in London brings tears to my eyes. the series is also Very funny on the opposite end of the spectrum. She is a great actor and I am happy when I see her name attached to a project.

Olivia Colman is an amazing actress, now as Queen Elizabeth II , I’m Season 3 The Crown; she deserves an Emmy.
Broadchurch is a thriller that takes your breath.
    Bravo Olivia 👏👏👏🌷🌹🍀🌺❤️

Just discovered Olivia from across the pond. Her talent is unmistakable. Her personality is delightful. In the US young girls want to be like Meryl Streep. In the UK I would assume they would want to be like Olivia Colman.

By a coincidental fact, Olivia Colman starred in a small role in The Iron Lady featuring Meryl Streep as PM Margaret Thatcher, of which Streep won her 3rd Oscar (and her 2nd Oscar win for Best Actress), overall.

While I can't possibly disagree with your number one (because I simply believe that every TV show in the world should just feature David Tennant and Olivia Colman), there is one role of Colman's, that is not widely known about and that is The Karman Line. It's the weirdest thing you will ever watch, but it's absolutely heartbreaking.
We also shouldn't forget her roles in The Thirteenth Tale. Mr Whicher, Accused, Locke, Run, Green Wing, The 7:39 and Exile and more. The woman's an absolute genius! And I just wanna be her best mate! :)

I loved her and David’s dynamic on Broadchurch. 👏👏
    H: *is amgery* }:(
    E: Ooh, bumper cars, Hardy!”
H: We’re not here for ice cream
    -
    E: Speak for yourself.”
    -
How about when she storms out of the bathroom in tears and turns back to yell at Hardy for putting the ‘wet floor’ sign in her way.
I can’t with this queen. Give her all the awards, all the sashes, all the crowns (hehe). Anyways, I digress-
