Mick All her court scenes were phenomenal, but I think the most riveting for me was when Bishop was accusing her of framing Joe and having an affair with Hardy. 😬
As I read on the Internet : people started watching Broadchurch because of David Tennant, but they kept on watching because of Olivia Colman. Her work in this series is simply brilliant. This show is a must-see.
Not me, I started watching for two other reasons: firstly, because the setting of Broadchurch was largely that of West Bay in Dorset, just down the road from where I originate and it was fantastic to see such a stunning location be brought to national attention; and the second was for Olivia Colman. Having seen her in various comedic roles mentioned here and then her incredible performance in 'Tyrannosaur', I had to see what she brought to 'Broadchurch' and was blown away by her. She's so, so good!
Now Olivia Colman joins Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, Emma Thompson, Tilda Swinton, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Vanessa Redgrave, and Helen Mirren as the great British actresses.
Whatever she does, she is phenomenal! The kind of actor that absolutely transports you and makes you believe that a so-and-so is a real person. She never disappoints.
I will never forget watching Tyrannosaur for the first time. I remember watching the trailer before going to the movie theater, and just her facial expressions in it made me want to cry on the spot (I was like “what the hell??”; I never cry watching trailers). I vaguely recognized Olivia’s face, having seen her previously only in that one episode of Skin which I had rewatched a lot and in which she played the quirky hippie mother of one of the teenage characters… I remember the little movie theater, the color of the seats, where we were seated, how many people were in the room with my gf and I (only three, on the other side of the aisle). I remember the silence after the end credits, nobody dared to speak, we all left the theater walking very slowly, we were all in shock. The movie was so hard and impactful, dark and beautiful too. But mostly, Oliva Coleman’s performance floored me, it shook me to my core. It was breathtaking. It’s the way she portrayed Hannah’s fear that got me the most; her eyes, her body language. Just heart wrenching. I could not believe this unknown actress who had only played quirky, awkward supporting characters was turning before my eyes into this huge HUGE dramatic actress. To me, still one of the best performances committed to film. I’ll never get over it. It doesn’t matter that she did not get an academy award for it. Paddy Constantine (the director) said there was just no money to launch an award campaign. However, people who watched her on the screen were not blind. This movie changed Olivia Coleman’s life and gave her the career she has today!
I just love Olivia Colman! She is an amazing actress and funny as hell to boot! She has such a lovely personality and seems like a genuinely wonderful person all around! Thank you UK for sharing her with the rest of us!!
I literally jumped for joy when I heard that she was going to portrait the Queen's mature period. What an amazing idea. Following Claire Foy was worrying me but I am at ease now knowing that she's the one relaying Foy's work.
I was gonna be so mad if Broadchurch wasn't on the list and it turned out to be in the perfect spot. Thank you. She deserves so much acclaim fir her work.
Ellie Miller broke my heart! That performance was unbelievable. She's so good in everything, it would be so easy to get jealous of her. But she's so lovely! I wish her more and more success in the future.
It can be... such a hard film, because it is devastating and hard to watch such brutality but it is captivating and they are both so good. Eddie Marsan, too, but Olivia and Peter Mullan are great. I saw it so many years ago, and only the once, but I still remember, ugh, the thing about the broken glass. Just. Yeah. Hard. But very full.
I have never wanted to hug or hold a character more than Hannah. When she's drunk on the phone and begs her husband to not hurt her anymore made me cry, and then the rape scene was too much. It's a hard film to watch but she's incredible.
@@dwalker1974 Yup, and I remember thinking of Eddie in Vera Drake, and how completely different he is in this. Such an evil, sadistic man, who gets what he deserves. I love that she was also in Mitchell and Webb look...
I saw Tyrannosaur in 2012 and it stayed with me- her performance broke my heart. I would never watch it again, it was devastating, made me angry and sad at the same time and the scene at the end when she was on remand- she looked so beautiful, one of the most hopeful endings to what was a very difficult film to watch I love Olivia she is truly a gifted actress
It's about damn time that she's finally beginning to get the recognition she truly deserves. Think the first movie I saw her in was 'The Lobster.' It was a small part, but I remember thinking, "I like her. Hope to see her in more stuff." Then 'The Favourite' came out and just loved her in it. Oscar well deserved!! Can't wait to see her as Queen Elizabeth in 'The Crown.' Hope she will continue to grow and get some amazing roles.
Not to mention her appearances in Hot Fuzz, The Iron Lady, Murder on the Orient Express etc as well as tv shows like Dr Who and Midsomer Murders - the list is endless
In Broadchurch, Olivia Colman as Ellie delivers a brilliant performance. Two lines that always stuck with me were " Don't call me Ellie," and " We were happy here. " Her acting surrounding these two lines is flawless. As an avid cinephile, I've often wondered what it must feel like to be there, in the moment, as the director and camerman are capturing it. Must be quite the mystical experience.
The way she purses her lips in the same way as the woman who lives by the sea...the one she asked "how could you not have known?" Broadchurch. Brilliant.
I didn’t see her Oscar winning movie and never really heard of her but she looks so great on these clips and was so lovely and humble winning her award that I really like her alot
She looks so plain and unremarkable, but she hooks you in when she's performing. Just check out everything that she's done. From the Peep Show to Les Mis and beyond.

The scene in Tyrannosaur when she finally tells Joseph about all the abuse she's suffered is acted to absolute perfection, and is utterly and completely heartbreaking.
The scene where she steals Mark's seed is super cheeky, but it's inception level. It's Olivia, playing Sophie, who's playing dumb, while she plays Mark.

A lot of actresses from her generation have enjoyed a list status, but without having 1 tenth of the parts she’s managed to play, even if her parts were 5 minutes on screen it was so incredibly well done, she disappears into these roles so well , and then you’d feel inclined to research her on RUclips to get to know the person who is able to manage that so well, only to find out how lovely she is, and down to earth, how can someone work on that industry, be that good, and be so completely humble about it, it’s so flattering I think for all her peers because you can see on her interviews that the fact that she seems to be unaware of her greatness because she genuinely is paying attention and enjoying their work.
The scene on Broadchurch when she abused her husband was the highlight of her acting skills in my opinion. When I have watched it, I felt her pain and it was so enormously realistic and well acted. Both me and my husband were crying watching it. She is truly great actress.
That scene, yes, also in the courthouse when Ellie finally tells her son how it's going to be from here on out, telling him what's what and who's who. Meaning, Ellie (Mom) is the boss! Can watch those two scenes over and over, they are "OUTSTANDING, MILLER" (quoting Alec Hardy)!!!
Darn it to heck.....you blundered!! Her 'Debbie' in "Beautiful People" was hysterically funny, brilliant even!!!!! If you haven't seen her in it, you've miss out!!!!
