February 10, 1996 - Los Angeles Clippers rookie Brent Barry skied his way to the 1996 NBA Slam Dunk Contest crown with a series of free throw line jams.
kseries1981 Fun fact: The reason he wore his jacket was because underneath he had a shirt on that said "White Men Can Jump" and NBA personnel told him right before that the shirt was too "controversial" to be worn on national television. Mind you, this is was in 1996. Things were a lot different back then.
For a guy didn't want to be in this contest and when he accepted they didn't let him to have his coreagraphy with rap music cause NBA was against it, then he did his dunk with jacket on because he was afraid to look too skinny and then being white,...man, this is the most memorable than any contest I has seen in my life. When he was with clippers he couldn't shoot probably because he wasn't open and he had no dribbling skills to make him lose player guarding him so he could get open j. Look at Robert horry who did game winning baskets and he couldn't even get in shooting contest.

Jason Kidd made those Air Zoom Flights popular but I really wanted those kicks when I saw Brent dunk from the foul line. Those joints were dope then and now.
Those shoes were so popular back in the day. I wanted these so so bad. The kid across from me in my 6th grade home room had them and I was jealous as hell. My mom wouldn't buy them for me though lol because I had gotten the Jordan 11 concords. They didn't come out until the fall if I remember right but I was due for new school shoes so I got the 11s late lol. I wasn't a rich kid, but we weren't poor either. Pretty much standard lower-middle class family, and I remember my mom hated the idea of paying over $100 for shoes...I think the Jordans were like $120 or $125 then, but she also considered it an early christmas present too lol. 1995/1996 was such a good year(and NBA season) for shoes man. The Zoom 95s were like one of the most popular shoes in the NBA at the time too. Jason Kidd wore them yeah, but so many others guys did too like Tim Hardaway, Derick Harper, etc. I wanted that carbon fiber/black/white looking colorway. I remember every time we went to the mall I would go into the shoe store to look at it on the shelf, but I never got them. I got a pair recently when they retrod for sentimental value. Oh well. I wore the crap out of my concords though until they fell apart and the patent leather was scuffed to hell. If only I knew how much OG 11s would be worth today lol. The Zoom Flight 95 has to be one of the best basketball shoes of the 90's era. It was so futuristic looking for it's time with that bubble midsole tooling.
I started following bball in the 2000's, and only knew Barry as the old pasty guy who shot 3's for the Spurs. Nearly crapped myself when I saw him doing this.
It's the other way around with me. I started to watch bball in 1991. He was drafted in 1995 and won the dunk contest in 1996. In 2005, I crapped myself when I saw Brent reduced to being a spot up 3 point shooter for the Spurs.
Dude is a 2-time NBA champion, had a solid playing career, is an executive with the Spurs now, and is still remembered mostly for winning this contest. This video doesn't do it justice - people were seriously in shock when he won this. It was water-cooler conversation at work for that whole week afterward.
I will never forget how Fisher jumped on top of Bones in the 2008 conference finals while attempting a 3 but it wasn’t called. One of many many times the spurs were robbed of the title
In any case, it's (foul line) it's a winner. It's why MJ beat Nique one year. Dominique couldn't do that dunk, he was a straight up leaper. MJ, Doc and Barry could all float AND fly. They were high and broad jumpers, both.

He could have lifted off half a foot from behind the free-throw line and he still would have dunked it. He over-jumped it a bit, so I do not see how stepping on the line was a big deal.

Armstrong was a dunker who relied heavily upon sprinting head starts and cuffing the basketball between his hand and wrist. His rumored layup came at the conclusion of a continuous 90 second routine. While likely being gassed from a minute and a half of sprinting, he also lost his grip on the ball during takeoff, thus resulting in random flip-up. His full round from the 1996 contest can be found on RUclips.
TheSeeker84 My response was a means of explaining his intent. Often, Darrell Armstrong seems to be the focal point of much criticism, as if he decided beforehand that he wanted to perform a layup for one of his dunks. Instead, he merely lost control of the ball and misstepped prior to takeoff.
+Navid Behroozi Sadly, I'm old enough to remember that Armstrong did give up and do a layup. He was short, didn't have the youngest legs and should have never been in the contest. Dunking has evolved a lot of the years. I don't think the "between the legs" dunk was even invented until 2000.
+james lachs The NBA's first between-the-legs dunk came in 1984, when Orlando Woolridge completed the flush from the baseline: ruclips.net/video/cCDUJTBppLw/видео.html Isaiah Rider then cleaned it up and refined the dunk in 1994 and Kobe Bryant followed suit in 1997.
