Oh as a FYI your video on the thermostat i used it to create one for my fireplace in my living room. The fireplace is a IR controlled one that you use the IR remote to turn on/off. Puts out some good heat but that's the extent of what it can do. SO i used a broadlink RM4 pro that I've integrated into HA and taught it the on/off IR signals. Then created a thermostat with the help of your video for it and now it turns on/off based on the temp sensor in the room. I was using a automation to control it but this work a lot better. Can turn it on/off using a hidden NFC tag in the table next to the chair in the living room. Thank for that idea, really good one.

That is really cool Simon. I like that a LOT. I have a Govee Bluetooth Hygrometer Thermometer sensor that is picked up automatically for my chest freezer that updates as soon as the temp changes more then .1 degree F, (sorry USA here, don't know why we are still using that) but it's like your switchbot one it's automatically detected in devices. Battery last forever and uses 2 triple A's. I'll get another one. They are only about $16 US.

Would love to see some more advanced thermostats! I am thinking about creating my own smart thermostat to control our heating and cooling system. It seems like the only option to have home assistant control my thermostat without sending data out to a cloud server and spending a shit ton of money on an over priced data farm that controls my heating and cooling is to diy it myself! Its a shame that we cant have commercial products for this but it sounds like im gonna need to control a few relays and jump through a bunch of hoops.. still vidoes like these go a long way in helping me decide what options i have. Thank you

Thank you so much for your kind comments! I look forward to hearing how you get on with that development. Will you use HA automation or Node Red?

@@simonsayshomeassistant Well i plan on using HA automation unless i find node red give me a significant advantage.

This is off topic i know sorry but just thought i'd let you know i just got one of the aqara FP1 mmWave sensors and really like it a lot. Use it to turn the lights off in my office when i leave but it takes to long for it to respond when you come back so using a standard PIR motion sensor for that (already had that). Anyway just a FYI 😁

thank you so much for this video! super useful!
may I ask if you know about a thermostat that works with opentherm so it could have even bigger savings and how to integrate it with this kind of scripts? thanks!

That's great thank you for your support.
There is a HA integration for this www.home-assistant.io/integrations/opentherm_gw/
I haven't tried using it with HA as I don' t have a central heating system

New subscriber from melb here, great video. Is there a way to configure it to ignore turning heating on if no-one home? I usually use the zone.home > 0 in automations, but not quite sure how to leverage it with this generic thermostat. The away_temp setting looks useful, maybe just setting that to a unrealistic low temperature will ensure heating would not come on as a solution?

Hi Simon, thanks so much for your feedback. I am not too sure how to edit YAML configs myself so I think setting it to a low temperature might be an easy way to achieve this.

Im a little late to the game on TRV's which Ive just purchased (aqara smart radiator thermostat e1 and Aqara temp sensor) due to the extreme cold weather in UK. To my understanding and from your video, you can only use a switch entity for the Heater? I'm trying to use my TRV entity under Heather: while the target_sensor is my Aqara - which is not working?
    climate:
    - platform: generic_thermostat
    name: Study
    heater: switch.study_heater
    target_sensor: sensor.study_temperature

Hi, I am sorry but i don't have a radiator system in my home to try this out on but here is a thread that might help: community.home-assistant.io/t/aqara-e1-radiator-trv-cant-turn-on/464366
