The pull them down tip was like one of those 'ofcourse' moments, such a simple move that makes soo much sense but never dawned on me, always been pushing them away. Cheers!!
I'm a physio and this works because of ours brain motor planning a response to certain stimuli. If you're on top and are being pulled in, subconsciously the motor ( muscle) planning response is lessened making it more possible to create distance, for the person on bottom with a quick push after pulling. Confuses the brains motor planning response. Very effective, thanks!
this is the only rational answer. by pulling and assisting his force your not able to gauge what force your applying for one and if you stop giving this your focus for one second your going to let up without thinking about it. you just need that 1/8th of a second lapse between the brain figuring out whats going on and sending the signal; that lapse between higher cortex functioning and the primitive brain. im sure theres some science tricks out there some science teacher knows or professor that illustrates this. someday someone will post it.
You have a good formula of practical technique, that's explained clearly and efficiently, with a good attitude. I'm really Impressed. Thank you for creating this content.
Coach Tom. Im 49 years old and just started bjj. Watching your tutorials has helped me no end.. im rolling with young guys in their twenties and thirties and much fitter and stronger than me. I cant submit them yet but they cant submit me either so i class that as a big win for me. Cheers coach.!
I started last year at 54 y.o. When my wrestling son graduated high school he turned to Jujitsu. I joined him and we've had nothing short of a blast working and training together! Even though I'm older my body has responded well and I'm in great shape thanks to rolling 4-5 times a week. Now when everyone is asleep I turn off Netflix and turn on The Grappling Academy videos!
“I don’t know why electricity works either” 😂😂👍. Great tips. Honestly. I feel like I am ahead of the curve in my BJJ classes as a result of watching (and re-watching) videos like these. Thank you!!
i think it works because psychologically when u pull them in first they naturally start to oppose the movement by pushing slightly up, thus when u proceed to push after the original pull; you have your opponents momentum on your side
Thanks coach Tom! I've been so frustrated with side control as a white belt, I haven't been able to escape it despite elbow placement and shrimp technique, but I've been leveraging incorrectly the whole time!
So much thanks for this. My body weight is around 165 pnd and my fellow students who allways seem to pick me to learn bjj with weigh around 240 pnd and this will help. And i dont allways care how it works only that it will help me out of a side mounth thanks
The pulling in hard and then releasing works before you activate the stretch reflex mechanism in the muscles that cause a deep contraction and a subsequent relaxation. From a more scientific perspective it's : The Golgi tendon reflex is a normal component of the reflex arc of the peripheral nervous system. In a Golgi tendon reflex, skeletal muscle contraction causes the antagonist muscle to simultaneously lengthen and relax
You have some great hacks Coach Tom. I've had the pleasure pulling them off during my rolls and get some positive input afterwards. 💯😎👍 By the way I am glad you pointed out that both your legs are the same length. For a moment I thought how am I gonna do that... my legs aren't different lengths. 😂😆😂
In original video i think it said hold for 10 secs before pushing up ? I’ve only tried this once (fail but I was too quick to push I think ) Will try tomorrow again .
Next trick for me: remembering your advice _when_ I need it rather than _just_ after. :)
ncooty glad I’m not the only one 😆
Right??? When it counts and my mind goes completely blank🤣

Shrimpin aint easy, but it’s nec-es-sary!
awesome video!
Cool energy, love the content!
Thank you coach
Like pulling them into you is kinda like pulling the slack out of the bar for a deadlift?
Hey great video guys
Brilliant
Such a great video!
Reeeeeeeseeeeee i had to watch your classics that the only way i can see u
nothing weird about this...…...(-: Tom Davey
yooo this is so fkn good
Wish I’d known this for the last 10 months
That is my problem, I have a purple belt that as soon as he see that I can recover he switch to the other side very fast and I cant stop it
I tried this to a heavier lady, but it did not work for me ! Any tip? Thanks
Practice and repeat. Escaping is never easy. IT should ne hard or impossible otherwise bjj wouldn't work! Happy rolling (-: Tom Davey

Will try tomorrow again .
no you shouldn't escape
Why do I have BJJ amnesia 😩
Great tips, but I assume you need to keep scrambling as top man isn't going to not react.
