Next trick for me: remembering your advice _when_ I need it rather than _just_ after. :)

The pull them down tip was like one of those 'ofcourse' moments, such a simple move that makes soo much sense but never dawned on me, always been pushing them away. Cheers!!

I'm a physio and this works because of ours brain motor planning a response to certain stimuli. If you're on top and are being pulled in, subconsciously the motor ( muscle) planning response is lessened making it more possible to create distance, for the person on bottom with a quick push after pulling. Confuses the brains motor planning response. Very effective, thanks!

this is the only rational answer. by pulling and assisting his force your not able to gauge what force your applying for one and if you stop giving this your focus for one second your going to let up without thinking about it. you just need that 1/8th of a second lapse between the brain figuring out whats going on and sending the signal; that lapse between higher cortex functioning and the primitive brain. im sure theres some science tricks out there some science teacher knows or professor that illustrates this. someday someone will post it.

Coach Tom. Im 49 years old and just started bjj. Watching your tutorials has helped me no end.. im rolling with young guys in their twenties and thirties and much fitter and stronger than me. I cant submit them yet but they cant submit me either so i class that as a big win for me. Cheers coach.!

I started last year at 54 y.o. When my wrestling son graduated high school he turned to Jujitsu. I joined him and we've had nothing short of a blast working and training together! Even though I'm older my body has responded well and I'm in great shape thanks to rolling 4-5 times a week. Now when everyone is asleep I turn off Netflix and turn on The Grappling Academy videos!

i think it works because psychologically when u pull them in first they naturally start to oppose the movement by pushing slightly up, thus when u proceed to push after the original pull; you have your opponents momentum on your side

Thanks coach Tom! I've been so frustrated with side control as a white belt, I haven't been able to escape it despite elbow placement and shrimp technique, but I've been leveraging incorrectly the whole time!

The pulling in hard and then releasing works before you activate the stretch reflex mechanism in the muscles that cause a deep contraction and a subsequent relaxation. From a more scientific perspective it's : The Golgi tendon reflex is a normal component of the reflex arc of the peripheral nervous system. In a Golgi tendon reflex, skeletal muscle contraction causes the antagonist muscle to simultaneously lengthen and relax

By the way I am glad you pointed out that both your legs are the same length. For a moment I thought how am I gonna do that... my legs aren't different lengths. 😂😆😂
