    Azaghal Broadbeam is one of my favorite characters in the entire Legendarium. The dwarves might actually be my favorite race because of the scene when Glaurung slays Azaghal, and his warriors bear him out of the battle on their shields, singing a low death-dirge so intimidating that no enemies would dare attack them as they bore their fallen king away from the battle.

    I'd say Gimli because when he went to Valinor with Legolas, he may have met Aule. What a meeting that must have been!

      I'd be pretty certain that he did.
      And considering the belief of the dwarves that they will assist Aule in rebuilding the world, yeah that must have been an INSANE moment for Gimli.

      True, but I never understood why the entire Moria Dwarven guard were slaughtered by one Balrog, when single Elf warriors and Men were successful against Balrogs...strange...

      @@harrykadaras9459 dwarves already have the best weapons,armour, tactics,and weaponry ,it would be foolish to have them any more well rounded ,what would even be the point of battle if they were any better? They have to have some kind of weakness as warriors and there's is really only dragons or Balrog..and I don't remember to many Elves or men killing Balrogs I know a few wizards have......

    • @harrykadaras9459
      @harrykadaras9459 2 года назад +2

      @Hailey N I'm not sure what you're meaning. Have you read the books by chance? According to Tolkien's LOTR series and the Silmarillion, the only 'Wizard' to have killed a Balrog was Gandalf (and he died as well). From the Silmarillion, there were several Balrogs killed by individual Elves and men in the 'Fall of Gondolin' chapter (Glorfindel, Ecthelion, and Tuor, who was a man all had victories against single or multiple Balrogs). So my point was that I thought it strange that the Dwarves had not accomplished that, either in single hand combat or Durin's entire Moria host, that fought the awoken Balrog had no chance. Yes, Dwarves are known to have excellent armor and weapons (including Mithril), plus their natural resistance to fire, and from those advantages, plus their great numbers in Moria, you'd think that they would have killed the "Durin's Bane" Balrog, even if he awoke and took them by surprise.

    • @fmls8266
      @fmls8266 8 месяцев назад

      @@harrykadaras9459 Balrogs were not as strong at first, Tolkien powered them up later.
      Also, some Elven Lords or Men from the first age were stupidly strong.
      The power scaling is not that accurate in all Tolkien works, Durin's Bane would be probably much stronger than any Balrogs slain before.

      @@harrykadaras9459@harrykadaras9459 tolkien writing many times uses battle measured as some kind of courage or authority. like , the evil demons cant easily kill the old elven lords cause they were talking with the gods etc. Dwarves initially were great craftsmen, They could ignore or hardship, but not exactly fearless when facing a demon.

    As always another great video from this great channel cant wait for the live stream!!!!

    Fun Theory here, on Durin´s Axe: In the fellowship (movie), Gimli doesn´t start with his twobladed axe! the rest of the movies, he carries it on his back, but not at the beginning! The first time, he uses it, is after the troll destroys Balins tomb. Maybe this is durins axe, and gimli found it in the coffin!!!

    The gift of Galadrial's 3 hairs to Gimli was VERY significant, because the "great" Faenor sought and begs her for a single strand of hair. He said he could have created something great and marvelous with it. She always said no because his heart wasn't pure. I think it was because her hair had the light of the trees in it or so he thought. Something to do along those lines, so for her to go e a mere dwarf what she denied Faenor is a big deal.

    It actually would be cool if Thorin's death could be prevented, as he probably wouldn't have children anyway, Dain II. would still eventually become king and thus history wouldn't be changed too much.
    If Thorin were still alive when Balin sets out on his quest to retake Moria it could lead to a very different conclusion and even change the course of events during the Ring War.

    • @turond2309
      @turond2309 2 года назад +9

      To the first question: I don't think we know. Bard's date of birth is not given anywhere as far as I can remember. What is certain ist that he reigned for 33 years until his death. Now if you assumed that he died of old age somewhere around being 70 or 80 years old, that puts him around his 40s when slaying Smaug, give or take a few years.
      To the second question: The king of dale who fought and died side by side with king Dain II in the Battle of Dale was actually Bard's grandson Brand, as Bard has already been dead for more than 40 years at that time and his title as King of Dale passed down his line.

King Eanür vs. Meriadoc Brandybuck who both fought the witch king but despite Merry "winning" would we really consider him more powerful than a high Dunedain king? Even if you picked Eowyn instead point still holds) this is a great idea of how to make such a video. Good job.
    I cant really put out an complete ordered list because as you say, its nearly impossibly, but I WILL make a top 5:
    Durin I: For quite obvious reasons.
    Azaghal: Not just for wounding Glaurung but because in doing so he basically saved the retreating elvish and edain armies. Had this not happened they might have perished in fire and the war of the jewels would have ended before Beren and Luthien could even meet and all that brought with it. (Which is basically the entire world as we know it)
    Dain Ironfoot: For saving Eriador in the battle of Dale and for his killing of Azog.
    Unnamed dwarf chief of Nogrod: Leading the sacking of Menegroth eventually leading to the Nauglamir getting to Luthien and thus to Dior and Elwing.
    Thrain 2: For leading the war between dwarfs and Goblins lessening the threat of the orcs in the north and allowing the northern free people to not be completely divided in the years before the quest of Erebor, maybe even allowing the quest to be POSSIBLE in the first place.
    Beyond that yes. Gimli, Thorin, Balin etc etc but I cant possibly order them.
    Great video guys. Really enjoyed it.

    Azaghâl "covered the retreat of Fëanor and his sons" (at about 9:14-9:16).
    Um, Fëanor dies in Year of the Trees 1497 or about 500 years (if one YT = 9.5 solar years, or about 900 years if one YT = 144 solar years) before the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

    At around 6:30, "For without him (Thorin II), Erebor 'might' not have belonged to the Dwarves during the War of the Ring, potentially making the Battle of Dale a very different battle."
    I disagree with the use of "might?" Who else could have sanctioned the quest besides Thorin II? "might" should be WOULD.
    One more observation: if Smaug is still in Erebor during the War of the Ring, Dale is still a ghost town; in other words, there is NO Battle of Dale.

      Maybe The Nature of Middle Earth has the math formula for calculating birth rates for each race. I always thought Rivendell just had less than a couple hundred Elves, but actually I have no idea.

    They say there are Elves of such power and skill that even some of the Valar themselves are afraid to face them in battle. But only the Dwarves have joined a battle raging hot and fully joined. Lost a lord and were allowed to leave unmolested such was the state of their wrath. Lol that says something.

    Azaghal has the greatest feat. Then Dain Ironfoot. I suppose Gimli has the feats of killing 42 uruk hai in a single battle and resisting the Ring and Saruman's voice. But seeing how Dwarven achievements in battle are relatively unexplored rating the strongest Dwarves is tough.

      The dwarves was nigh immune to the Ring of Power's seduction, not being created by Illuvatar but by Aule (an moment of innocent fancy but he did get some flak for it) their ring wielders never fell under Sauron's power like the Nine (the race of mortal men, doomn'd ta die) when gifted seven Rings (I think seven). Only other race with a similar resistance to Sauron's influence were the Hobbits, probably another Aule creation but by now his lips is totally shut (seen what trouble he would be in) and so the Hobbits are a curiosity. Hobbits got no rings at all, Sauron didn't even know the race existed, neither did the Ents get any ..no idea why. Maybe they were too slow or they had no use for craft.
