Gordon Banks' save against Pele, hands down, is THE greatest save ever. Just looking at it over and over again, it was unbelievable how Banks stopped Pele from scoring in that game. It was THE greatest save ever against THE greatest player ever in Pele.

I'm a goalkeeper and in my school whe I was a substitute they subbed the goalkeeper off and I came into the pitch and when a opponent passed it to the other opponent I saved it just like Gordon Banks and I didn't even concede plus I'm ten years old and I didn't even concede in that match.

I was a professional goalie in the '70s and '80s, so I pretty much now what I am talking about. That save was the best save in the history of football. Gordon did not have enough reaction time to follow the ball in order to make the save, he had to anticipate how the ball will bounce in order to save that header, and that is an almost impossible task.

To really appreciate how good that save was there is somewhere some video from behind or from the side, I can't remember precisely. You can see though just how much ground Banks covered going back and across. Utterly brilliant and what a really nice man as well, a true gentleman.
I agree that it is hard to see the. full quality of the save from use of. just one camera angle-particularly the goalkeepers. movements beforehand.
I have to admit much of the artistry of players such as Pele -and. other S.A. players is something best described as' throwing. pearls. before swine' as far as I am concerned. I think I am wedded to the more robust, physical style of the U.K.F.A.

i played against gordon banks in college in a scrimmage game against the fort lauderdale strikers summer of 1978...mr. banks played the field instead of goalie because they were toying with us kids...greatest game memory of my life...i think we lost 8-0...ray hudson, nene cubillas, tony whelan, george best, colin fowles, denny vaninger probably had 4 goals, all on headers as he towered over us kids...

Not only was it the greatest save ever it was also the greatest header for me. Pele just seemed to hang in the air waiting for the cross, then down with great force so it would bounce and confuse any keeper. Yes any keeper but Banks. What a Save! But also What a header. Needed the best to save from the best.

I grew up in Leicester and was able to watch Banks playing for Leicester City during the 60s. I never understood why he was sold to Stoke because he was still the best goalkeeper in England. Yes the Pele save was on another level.

Pelé used to shout "goal" seconds before scoring, but this time he was wrong. And I admire how you people from England recognize the brilliance of your players even when they lose. Here in Brazil, nothing short of a victory gets any sort of recognition. In the 1982 World Cup, Brazilian player Falcão scored one of his most beautiful goals ever against Italy, but nobody cares because Brazil lost that game.

I was at school when Gordon Banks had his accident in his Mini & lost the use of his eye . He was playing for my hometown club Stoke City. I cried when I heard about the accident on the News . Such humble man & the Greatest save by the Greatest goal keeper EVER ! RIP GORDON !
