  • This is a video response to logcabinlooms video "ALCAN INCORPORATED metal 12 gauge shotshells"
    • Video
    This is a look at some old Alcan Metal 12 Gauge Shotshells, along with Alcan "Max-Fire" primers, and Alcan AL-5 and AL-8 smokeless shotgun powders. Alcan was purchased in it's later years by Smith & Wesson.

    @logcabinlooms One caution with using the MEC sizing station - the machines are designed to "flare" the mouth of plastic and paper shells to allow wads to be easier to insert, you might have to alter the "knockout bushing" or get one a gauge or two smaller to prevent flaring. I'll have a look at my machine to see if it looks like it might be a problem.

    I found some rolled paper ones in my grandmothers house. Very neat shells you have there.

    @314299 Not sure bro, i remember my Grandfather having a stock pile of these for his side by side gauge, i was born in the early seventy's so yah i would assume that may be a correct timeline. You really brought back some awesome memories just by seeing these rounds so i am very grateful to you! Not to mention it was a great video as well!!!

    I know this is late but thank you. Just found 100 of these for free and will give them a try with fibers. The Alcan PGS is just a plastic gas seal and have had good luck cutting the seal end off of a one-piece wad for a substitute.

      I found a box of ole Alcan PGS wads at a gun show, but I have yet to try them.
      If you do load up your Alcan metal shells please get back to us to let us know how they worked for you, it would be interesting to hear.

      @@314299 Will be working on it. The information shared in the video is very valuable in that zinc reloading goal. Better views of the tooling would be very helpful. Better yet scans of the paperwork would be fantastic. Playing with old components is a fun hobby of mine.

    I use Black Powder or Pyrodex powders and Circle Fly wads when reloading Metallic Hulls along with white glue or silicone sealant to anchor the over shot card.

  • @cplbullet

    Hey thanks for sharing, I have never seen those before. I have loaded lots of brass shells so I would think this would last for ever unlike the brass ones I used to load.

    A straight type wad such as the federal might do better than WAA12, since those reduce to fit a tapered hull. Thanks for the info. You have a very cool collection and lots of knowledge.

    I think we had a Lee setup at that time, and I have a mec I use and I figure it should do the job. When I try them out I will put a video.

  • @logcabinlooms
    @logcabinlooms 12 лет назад

    I may have to give them a try. I can get 11 gauge wads, the problem may be in resizing. There is mention of a special resize die, but we never had one before. We used them in my dads Winchester model 12, but I would try them in my model 97. First I better hunt up the old coffee can I last saw them in, and order some wads.

  • @314299
    @314299  12 лет назад

    @logcabinlooms I see that Dixie Gun Works, Buffalo Arms & Track of the Wolf all list 11 gauge wads so sourcing them seems to be no harder than getting any other fiber wad. As for sizing them I expect that as long as they fit your gun you would not need to size them, if they don't fit as is the sizing ring from a Lee Load All would do the trick, or the sizing station of a MEC 600 should do the job.

    You can buy 11 gauge wads and over powder cards, I think Circlefly has them. Also, plastic wads for Federal, or the various straight wall European hulls like Cheddite, Rio, etc. would likely seal in those Alcan metal hulls. Magtech makes metal (brass) shotshell hulls nowadays.

    • @314299
      @314299  5 лет назад

      The issue is not so much with the fit and function of modem wads upon firing, but rather how they dont fit while the shells are transported and handled. I agree that a plastic wad with gas seal for a straight wall, thin hull like those you mentioned would seal on firing, but the issue is rather that of powder leaking around the gas seal prior to firing during transport, handling, etc. This would be a bigger issue with some powders, ball types for instance. The proper 11 ga wads would be the ideal solution.

  • @mikenixon5936
    @mikenixon5936 3 года назад

    All metal shells I've ever loaded required you to use a larger card than the gauge your were loading. Meaning I use 10 gauge cards to seal the powder off and then 12 ga for spacing/buffers and crimp card.

    • @314299
      @314299  3 года назад

      To properly load these shells it requires 11 gauge card wads.

    • @mikenixon5936
      @mikenixon5936 3 года назад

      @@314299 I've never had those shells, the traditional brass shells will work with the 10 ga cards. The 11 ga was probably neccessary on those you showed because the walls appeared to be so thin.

      No on Alcan (Not to be confused with the aluminum company). Smith & Wesson and Fiocchi purchased Alcan in 1970 and started selling under the brand name in 1972. By 1980 Smith & Wesson ceased ammo and component production under the Alcan and Smith & Wesson brands. I could not tell you who owns the rights to the brand name today. Any ammo or components with Alcan or Smith & Wesson brand name on it is old to say the least.
