  • When Professor Maurizio Porfiri looks at fish, he sees more than just a bunch of aquatic animals - he sees an animal that could someday replace the rat as the key to better studying and understanding human and animal behaviors in laboratory research. But fish can be unpredictable, which is why Porfiri has dedicated his life's work to building the ultimate robotic fish.

    I kinda laughed when he said he would deploy robotic fish in the ocean to ward other fish off in case there was an oil spill.

    Nicely done NY, in Glasgow University I asked my supervisor what we use our 3D printer for and the response was "Just to show off." I wish I had more people like you in our department.

    A potential use for these robot predator fish could be to deter Asian carp from crossing major waterways that lead into the Great Lakes. From what I understand, the risk of invasive carp entering the Great Lakes is a pretty big concern at the moment.

    Professor Maurizio Porfiri feeds zebrafish alcohol and/or caffeine, then chases them around with a robotic predator fish he's designed in his lab.

    If I where a scientist, I would just place a screen next to the fish pool with video footage of the correct predator footage. Its simple and repeatable, and doesn't require a robot fish, although they are very cool.

    An interesting and innovative approach to researching animal behaviors. I do wonder which environmental factors change when only a physical/mechanical robot are in place of a live test subject.

    I have 5 zebrafish in my fishtank, they are really great fish. Its funny because when I turn their light off at night, they forget about each other in the dark. They go nuts in the morning when I turn their light back on, sometimes they fight.

    Seems rather basic, would be fun to work on and get paid for it though.
    Don't think this is exactly going to work effectively however; the science behind it is limited and only lets the robot move basically ( e.g. doesn't yet change the way it moves to show hostility).

  • @lejink

      NoctisAugustus Alchemy < Chemistry, Robotics < Bioengineering ... same things different degrees of depth in the field, and different tools. It doesn't have to be totally bio-engineered to to be tasty. You could do 3d printing with protein to add a layer of deliciousness.

  • @chikkachinijohannady

    It's nice but it seems hat there could be more efficient ways of solving the problems that they mentioned.
    Like for the alcohol experiment, they could just use a video of the predator.. And it seems really expensive to have a bunch of robots scare away fish from an oilspill..
    Why not just cause some strong motions inside the water to scare the fish... =/

    • @4umata
      @4umata 9 лет назад +2

      chikkachinijohannady Video might not be as effective as it would limit the amount of interaction with the fish to only visual while the robot, for example, could also allow physical contact. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @Sketchy_Dood
      @Sketchy_Dood 6 лет назад

      the purpose of scaring away the fish if there was a oil spill is to get them out of the way and if its a fish we eat we should definitely make such they don't get contaminated to make sure we don't get sick and if you tried what you said making a strong motion in the water that's not going to scare fish they are uses to waves and that is basically a wave and also they are adapted to be resistant to waves so they would keep on swimming.
