Thanks to Derek for calling out Jasons Apples to Oranges comparison, when it comes to comparing a standard Yaris GR on the wrong tires no less (not the Circuit pack with the same diffs as the the Corolla and Pilot Sport 4S) to a Morizo Edition Corolla GR with Cup 2s.

    • @eugenux

yeah, but Camisa seems to be stuck on the "Corolla is the best" narative and does not want to understand that the real gry, the one that 99% of buyers have is the circuit version(or equivalent)!

    • @Trendyflute
      @Trendyflute Год назад +5

@@eugenux I think Camissa's overall position is that the Corolla is the fundamentally better car because, at these performance levels, you genuinely get better handling and road manners from more track, more room for suspension components, more wheelbase, to the point where the question of diffs or no diffs is not significant enough to overcome the differences between two totally different body shells, of which the larger/higher-market-segment car is better. Which really shouldn't be surprising when you're comparing it to a subcompact with its roots in the super-economy market segment, as brilliant as the GR Yaris is.

Derek is right to call it out, but it’s hard, given that we are talking about a car that smuggled in from another country because it’s not available for sale in the US and A. For example Australian reviews between the two are much closer because all versions of both cars are available

Vibe improved by involving Derek more in this second ep with Sam (the "Time and Bad Ideas" article from Mar 2022 Hagerty mag was a fun intro to Sam's style). Guests with a more measured "talk/listen ratio" who pre-edit what they're saying (Matt LeBlanc, Henry Catchpole, Harry Metcalfe, Jason Fenske, Steve Magnante) would seem a better match to Derek's style. Wife & I tune in for The Hyphen's encyclopedic knowledge, fact-checking every syllable in real-time, and occasional spit-takes. Love the chemistry when it's just Derek & Jason and can see the potential for having guests being an occasional change of pace, but we hope Derek continues to be the equal Zen-calming comedic foil to Jason's lively banter (and singing). Love this show & hope it continues for years - thanks for putting in all the hard work & making this possible. MILLIONS of times better than the past few seasons of Top Gear America - keep up the greatness.

Re: ITR gearing, it isn't particularly difficult or exorbitant to home-brew a custom gearset out of OEM parts. The 1st gear used in the B17A-powered DB2 GS-R is a little shorter than all the other B-series options, and an LS 5th gear can bring revs down a bit on the freeway when used in combination with the JDM 98+ spec 4.785 ring gear. And yeah, an earlier VTEC engagement (I know, I know) will help with midrange torque a bit, at the expense of making the VTEC hit a bit less dramatic.
Speaking of cars we wish existed, I can't help daydream about Mazda making a compact, sporty sedan based on a stretched ND Miata platform. Something like a spiritual successor to the old Alfas. Of course it wouldn't sell in numbers to justify its existence, but I still think it'd be a fun car.

I got curious about your old ITR gearing talk and I threw the US and JDM ratios all in my gear ratio calc spreadsheet and the US gearing puts the 5700 RPM VTEC engagement at 28.0 MPH, 25.7 MPH for JDM. Certainly a bit high for tight corners but your guys' "50 MPH" hyperbole rather caught my ear out. Even in 2nd gear the US ITR is into VTEC before 43 MPH.

I never drove any W202 that was not a 4cyl... My father had a C180 "Esprit" while i had a C200 "elegance". So both 4cyl petrol/gasoline, sadly both with 4 speed auto transmissions (we bought them used and not at the same time), no traction control, no stability control, just ABS. (first year of production cars)
And with these cars i noticed the big difference the little word for the trim line actually made. Esprit models had a slight change in the suspension: there were rubber "pucks" between the springs and their seats. And in the Esprit model the front ones were 1.5cm thinner pucks, and in the rear 5mm. Which on one hand meant a slight lowering of the car and on the other hand that the front was lowered more than the rear.
The turnin was very different. My "elegance" turn-in wasn't bad, but the "Esprit" of my dad was great! (the weight difference between a 1.8 and the 2L wasn't much, both NA engines and mine had 12 more hp i think)
The 4 speed auto was the "weakpoint" of our cars. Sure you could switch gear by the speed of your throttle pedal movement ect. But on one hand, the throttle pedal was quite stiff, and the torque converter also was rather "stiff" And that made them a little tricky to drive on slippery conditions.
Like snow and ice here in the alps. Especially initial starts from a stop were sometimes a "pita". The stiff pedal and then a snap and the rear wheels would slip. (I have mostly driven rwd cars and owned only rwd cars but one so i am used to drive them on snow and ice)
Oh , and ours had E or S on the Auto switch: Economy and Standard. Later wones had the W and S.
The W202 was the only car i ever had that had me shaking after an unexpected drift for 10km home from where it happened. And that during the summer on a wet road. The reason were the tyres. (I mean it's long ago, so maybe they make good tyres now) I bought some Falken tyres back then via a friend of my dad, and the first summer they were fine. In the second summer they got really loud, and on one occation when i turned left under throttle on a wet road to make it before the light turned red, the gearbox decided "oh he wants to go quick so let's shift down mid corner to give the engine 4000rpm and max torque"... so the rear went off sideways. There were cars, there were people on the sidewalk the rear moved towards, there was a cyclist with eyes as big as a hockey puck, and i managed to "ride it out" without comming too close to any of them and not hitting anything or anybody. (i still think it was luck and correct instinctive reaction more than skill) But the rest of the journey home i drove like a 90 year old. I bought new tyres after that. Goodyear or Dunlops and they worked fine until i sold the car.

A bit much for NVH though, if I could do it all again I'd come up with some sort of intermediate stiffness subframe mount between stock and solid brass.

Also, almost all GR yarisisisies sold in eruope/germany where track packs, as a local dealer still has a base GR sitting there 2 years later, and the track packs sold out within weeks of being available. Every somewhat major dealer in germany got 2 GR's, almost all of them track packs, wich sold very fast. the other stupid ones remain

yaris track pack also has improved/stiffer suspenison and some other changes im forgetting aside from the obvious diffs, so that would mostly explain jason's experience

Oh, you fuckers. I gleefully unloaded my 99 C43 after rebuilding the grenaded auto trans back in what.. '09? I loved that engine SO MUCH, but could never get over the sleepy auto and propensity for eating my fucking lunch with repair costs (Trans, AC, Axle, blah blah blah). And not fully-defeatable traction control :(
I currently have an Alfa Giulia QV so I am sure I learned my lesson.

More guest action.. is this a new thing...or all filmed in the same day? 🤔
How is it not the "R rated episode" both cars and Jason and Sam's language 🤬

The first round with all three of you guys was fun but not quite sustainable with Sam and Jason dominating things so much. This is much more balanced! I don't want two-man Jason/DTS episodes to end but I'd be happy to have Sam back sometimes, he fits in well after all!!

That's what you'd expect. DTS is happy to let the extroverted types blurt out their dirt. They're old mates and it was bound to happen. But yeah, this episode at least gave Derek room to talk. Last episode seemed like a catch up for Jason and Sam, but with cameras and microphones. But it was funny as f%&#.

This comment may have had some merit after his first appearance but it honestly doesn't here. He's much calmer and DTS is contributing more. Try watching it before moaning.

Get off his sack, he’s not that good, nor funny. And I’d put my money on Jason as far as driving skills go.
