I live in Mesa, AZ, and visit Waylon's grave a few times a year when I'm planning on being near the cemetery. I stop and buy him some fresh flowers. It's always sad for me and I still get choked up when I'm there. 😥 Thank you for keeping his memory alive.
Gotta love Waylon. Authentic character. Vaya Con Dios. Several years back, I had a lengthy conversation with an older gentleman in Lubbock concerning Waylon. He spoke of Waylon in his youth working as a D.J. Waylon once told the guy he was about to buy some tires for his car. Waylon pronounced the word as tars. Fairly common pronunciation in west Texas back in those days. The gentleman much later actually played a part in financing some of Waylon’s concerts. He really liked Waylon, said he had a great sense of humor. The fellow with whom I spoke was originally from Muleshoe, Texas, about 30 miles from Waylon’s hometown of Littlefield. He was also quite a character and he and Waylon had much in common. Only natural that they would get along. The world seems to be rapidly running out of characters like those two. We are all the lesser for their passing.

Thank you for letting us know where Tim plays. I'm in Chattanooga not been to trashville as I call it since all the perfect people took over. But I'm gonna plan a trip just to go set down and listen to Tim. Man how great it would have been to hang in a room with Waylon, who for me is in my top 5 favorite country guys. I was hoping to see this again. Loved Waylon Jennings’ music and recently started listening to Tim Carroll. Such a fan of his. He is such a nice guy. Great interview. Lots is details to his story.
Waylon sure did have expressive eyes. You could clearly see the moods they expressed, whether performing or giving an interview. During interviews you could tell when he was relaxed and when he was more focused and intense. Sometimes during performances he'd give somebody on stage a look that would burn holes in wood, but on the other hand when he laughed at one of his own ad-libs or liked something he heard his whole expression would light up. Yeah, I've watched a lot of Waylon videos a lot of times. Oh, and one correction: Waylon was actually a "Brown Eyed Handsome Man". And Hank Jr.'s song is called "Eyes of Waylon". I read somewhere that when Hank showed Waylon the lyrics he was working on, Waylon's eyes teared up. Finally, I'd be curious if that was Waylon's last recording session. My understanding is that the last song he composed and recorded as a solo was "The Dream", but I don't know where that falls in chronologically. Anyway ... that's my two cents worth. Waylon's last recordings were done with his pal bassist and steel guitarists, Robby Turner, which turned out to be the post death release 'Goin' Down Rockin' - The Last Recordings'.

Just for the record Waylon’s Wes were brown. Nice interview, thanks for the great content.
As far as I know, Waylon's last recording was "Well... All Right" on the album "The Crickets and Their Buddies." Greg Ladnayi (z"l) produced and engineered and the band was, of course JI Allison (drums), Joe B. Mauldin (z"l) bass, Sonny Curtis, guitar and Glenn D, Hardin, piano. It was a great project to be involved with. #legends

Otis, you dig up the best good old stories, I missed so much when I lived Nashville in 76-78, met David Allen Coe, Mississippi Whiskers. Didn't get no story though.

This story reminds me of an album I have by Bob Wills. It was a session that he did just hours before his passing.
I know there was another session that Waylon did that was released on CD that he recorded not long before his passing.
Has a big fan of both Waylon and Willie I was really thrilled when their duets became hit after hit....then came the awards show and they were up for duet of the year! Yes! No! The two were beat out by Ricky Skaggs and his wife Sharon who had only one hit song together. Then they went on stage and all they could do was cry and thank Jesus! Never had any faith in awards shows after that.

Loved everything about Waylon but I sure wish somebody would remaster all of the big hits without that phase shifter. It distracts from Waylon's great voice.

@@otisgibbs my father was in his first band when they were both about 5 years old. I think he played with him a few times 40 or so years down the road. But they grew up together. Sonny is a damn good guy! I love all your stories. But my jaw dropped when I heard mention of Sonny.
I love your stories! Keep it up! It was way longer than 40 years ago if I did the math right my dad and Sonny playing together in 1960.
